Online: www.grtconline.org
Tuesday, May 6, 2008
Attendees: Wilt Alston, Hilary Cardin, Bob Dyjak, Bill Hearne, Roger Howe, Dick Lewandowski, Tom Perry, Brian
Sears, Deb Wyspianski Guest: Sandy Churchill
New Business:
1. The Board discussed naming the Greece 8 miler in memory of Tom Brannon and then unanimously voted to do so. 2. Sandy Churchill was nominated to join the Board and was then voted in unanimously.
Priority Continuing Business:
1. GRTC RROY Series - Roger indicated that the Charlie McMullen 1 miler will be run in age group heats (June 28th). The series needs a major sponsor for the overall awards this year as Westside Tax Service is stepping down. The Board voted unanimously to take on the role at the same monetary
level as 2007. Deb will take Roger’s place on the RROY series committee. 2. Spring Track update - Bob reported that a total of 54 signed up with 24
being either new members or renewals. A pizza party will be organized for the last night of the series (June 12th). It would be great to have as many of
the Board members attend as schedules allow. 3. Lilac 10k volunteer update - Wilt distributed the volunteer assignment spreadsheet. We are presently
~10 shy of meeting the commitment. 4. Corporate Challenge water stop - Dick is making good progress in fulfilling our commitment. 5. Website Update - Roger believes we are almost ready to go live. There are still a few unanswered questions with respect to the message board. It will be the same
URL as before. 6. Boilermaker bus update - Wilt suggested we may need to add $5 per person from last year’s pricing structure. There will be a short
snippet in next newsletter - Bus-For-The-Run. 7. Summer Picnic - Deb has reserved one of the shelters at Seneca Park for Sunday, August 10th, Noon8 PM. The will be an optional trail run at 12:30 with the picnic to follow at 2 PM. 8. Preferred Care Rochester Marathon - the bulk of the discussion
focused on the pace groups. It was decided we should target 3:30, 3:40, 3:50, 4:00, 4:15, and 4:30, potentially recruiting 2 individuals per time goal.
The Arthritis Foundation has agreed to pay the entry for the pacers selected. We will need a process to select these important positions. In addition we
discussed relay teams. The club will provide half of the entry fee and a singlet if they don’t already have one.
Important Regular Stuff:
1. Membership has been holding steady, although the Spring Track workouts should bolster those numbers. 2. The club is doing well financially. 3.
The newsletter is the 10th of the month.
Minutes respectfully submitted by Bob Dyjak

GRTC SPONSORSHIP OF RROY- For 2008 GRTC has taken a larger role in the Rochester Runner of the
Years series. While we have always played a part, this year we will become a major sponsor of the series and
prizes.
GRTC PICNIC UPDATE- The Hawk shelter at Seneca Park (near the zoo) has been reserved for Sunday August 10th from noon until 8 pm. As a tentative plan we are looking to offer guided trail runs around 12:30 and
lunch following. Please keep an eye out for future updates and a possible sign up or evite.
BOILERMAKER UPDATE- You will see the new news featured here in our newsletter. A bus has been
rented and plans are underway for this years’ GRTC and FF bus trip to the party of the year. The busses are
large comfortable “Greyhound style” busses. The details remain to be determined but the date is set.
WEBSITE UPDATE- The new website will have a new look as well as some great new features. Members
will be able to update their member info such as address and email and will also be able to renew their membership online. You can upload a photo of yourself, use the discussion board and check the updated calendar
for upcoming races and their results.
GREECE FREEZEROO- Our Valentine’s day 8 miler in Greece will officially be know as the Greece Valentine’s 8 miler “in memory of Tom Brannon”. A member wrote to us with a request after his sad passing this
year. The Greece race was chosen since Tom was a Greece resident.
SPRING TRACK WORKOUTS- a total of 54 signed up with 24 being either new members or renewals. A
pizza party will be organized for the last night of the series (June 12th). Under the coaching of Mike Reif,
(2004 GRTC Hall of Fame member and coach of the Genesee Valley Harriers) and Carolyn Smith-Hanna
(2002 GRTC Hall of Fame Member and age group World Record Holder in the Mile) this wasa chance for
runners of all levels to learn the training techniques and principles to improve their running and get more enjoyment out of our sport.

20/20 Spirit of Participation Award 2008
Bill Murphy
Dedication and commitment to running is what the 20/20 spirit of participation is all
about. Having apassion for running is what makes runners keep going to race after
race.
Thanks to a friend, Bill Murphy has been an avid runner for 25 years. While looking
for a reason to get active and lose weight, a friend of Bill Murphy’s convinced him
to start running. So on May 15, 1983 he completed the Lilac 10K race and has been
hooked ever since. “I loved it, even though I was at the back,” Bill reminisced.
Through the years, Bill Murphy has made a point to run at least one race a week even if he is out of town. Recently he he ran a 10 miler while in San Antonio on business. An IT Analyst, Bill tries to fin time to run no
matter how busy he gets, usually along the Erie Canal. Some weeks he’s not able to keep up his daily running
schedule but still finds time to run at least once. Bill start off with a race on New Years Day. “It always feels
good to finish a race when you have trained the least and eaten the most the night before” said Bill. What a
healthy and active way to start the new year.
In his running career, Bil has completed a whopping 20 New York City Marathons. Bill found his most inpiring racing moments at the 1992 New York Marathon. Eighteen miles into the race, Bill noticed a group of people passing him. As they passed, Bill noticed the pack of runners was led by Fred Lebow, founder of the New
York City Marathon, who was suffering from a malignant brain tumor at the time. “It was very inspiring” remembers Bill. That 1992 marathon was the first marathon the Fred Lebow actively ran since the course expanded to include all five boroughs of New York City and the last marathon he participated in before his death
in 1994.
So what keeps his passion and dedication to the sport of running alive? “The people. Everyone from the runners to the race coordinators are wonderful,” says Bill. They are what keeps him going. A seven year member
of the Greater Rochester Track Club Freezeroos recommend find a mentor or joining a local running club to
anyone who is thinking of beginning their running career. Other runners have great advice and motivation.
You can learn from others rather than running by yourself and making mistakes.
Certainly Bill’s passion and dedication to the sport
of running over the last 25 years are an inspiration
to all.
Congratulations Bill!!
ST. J’s 5k
Saturday morning April 26, was the second annual St. J’s 5k in Naples. It was
held at St. Januarius Church at 8:30AM. It
attracted 400 walkers and runners.
The theme of the 5k was “Mt. Misery
Loves Company”. Aptly named because
of a rather steep hill at the end. Many runners commented they had to stop and walk
up part of the hill!
The awards included engraved wine
glasses and color prints done by Darryl
Abraham, (son of Doc and Katie Abraham).
It was a rather challenging course and fun
for everyone. If you didn’t do it this year
you may want to put it on your calendar
for next year.

On April 5, 2008 the Town of Greece Community and Senior Center planted a Liberty Elm tree in
memory of Tom Brannon. Tom was a long time runner who passed away while running on the track at the
center. It was a beautiful day for the ceremony and several members of Tom’s family were there along with
many friends. There was also a bench that will be surrounding the tree and a plaque dedicated to him. After
the ceremony, members of Tom’s family put their shovelful of dirt on the tree and then friends were also invited to do so.

BREAST CANCER RUN – May 11, 2008
By Karen Morris
This year’s Pink Ribbon Run & Walk, sponsored by the Breast Cancer Coalition (BCC) of
Rochester, was again a fabulous event. This women-only race, coupled with a co-ed walk,
attracts thousands of people and tens of thousands of dollars for a very worthy cause. The day
was glorious (sunny and warm), the field of participants large and excited, and the scenery was
lovely waterfront vistas in the Charlotte Beach area. These features, however, could not trump
a bitter sweet aspect of the event. The statistic that one out of eight women will contract breast
cancer hits very close to everyone’s home.
As races go, this one is very well-run. Signs at the beginning identify start points for various
speeds (9 minute milers here, 10 minute milers there). The sight of thousands of women
snaking through twisting beach walkways and streets is a grand benefit of being a back-of-thepacker. Pete van Puersem was there at the one mile point belting out the time in his upbeat
manner. Spectators were cheering along the route. The frontrunners were fast – I passed them
at the one mile point of the looped route. On the return part of the race, runners passed the
walkers on the other side of the street, many 100’s strong. Each waved to the other, sharing the
moment and reveling in our common efforts to eradicate a powerful disease.
This race was distinguished for me by another feature. Runners and walkers are invited to wear
an 8 by 11” placard that reads either “I am running in honor of . . .” or “ in memory of . . ..” The
signs are pre-printed by the BCC; runners fill in the name of their mother, daughter, sister, aunt,
or friend. I have for many years worn one in honor of my dear friend, Marcia McDowell,
Monroe Community College Hospitality Professor Extraordinaire. Alas, this year I ran in her
memory. The area for runners to prepare their signs was off to the side, away from the crowds;
an opportunity to connect quietly with a loved one, and shed a few tears with a little privacy.
How considerate of the BCC, an organization that encounters death with way too much
regularity and has clearly learned the needs of the living .
All along the route I recalled wonderful memories of my friend. I felt a bond with all the other
runners wearing similar signs, anticipating they too were experiencing fond recollections.
Thanks to BCC for its efforts to attack this plague, and to all the runners who contributed to the
cause. Hopefully soon we will make major progress in eradicating this illness. While en route
to that goal, thanks to BCC for a well-run race and a beautiful venue.

With the Medved Lilac 10k on May 18, followed by Beth el,

Meaghan’s 5k
On April 12th at Holy Trinity Church in Webster, Meaghan’s5k, a walk/run raised $34,000 through participants
entry fees and pledges.
Generous corporate sponsors such as Providium Consulting, Woods, Oviatt, Gilman, Harter, Secrest, Emery,
Superior Technology, Pavilion Gifts, Spoleta Construction and 37 others helped reach the total of $55,000
with donations still being received.
The event honored Meaghan Latone, a young Rochester mom who is currently fighting non-smoking lung cancer. Attempting to raise awareness that lung cancer is not just for smokers, research is 20 years behind that of
other cancers and there is no diagnosis tool to find this cancer before it is discovered in stage 4, Meaghan
wrote these facts in her opinion editorial in November’s Democrat and Chronicle.
It inspired me to put on this event, with no prior experience as a race director. With encouragement from my
son Garrett, friends and the Wilmot Cancer Center the event evolved. It was a learning experience, and many
kind volunteers helped to make it a success. PCR Timing had the results quickly and efficiently. We were surprised by the number of participants but many thanked us for holding the event as they had lost family members to this cancer. There were 350 runners and 450 walkers, an amazing turnout for a 1st year event .
A planning committee is in place to assure that next years event will be more efficient, have more food and
prizes and hopefully double the amount for this needed research. The website is Meaghans5k.com. Many
thanks to all who participated.

The Eclectic Runner
by Tom Perry
Each month in this space I share the best of recent postings in The Eclectic Runner Blog
on the new GRTC website (www.grtconline.org). The content varies widely from month
to month, hence the title.
Where to Qualify for Boston
One common goal of distance runners is to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Perhaps
some of your running buddies did Boston this year and you’ve got the bug to join them in
2009. But first you have to run a qualifying time. Now is the time to pick out a target
race if you are going to qualify for 2009.
There are marathons that have become popular at least partially because of their flat or
downhill courses allow for fast times. Jim Fortner, a runner from Pasadena, MD, analyzed published results of US marathons run over certified courses in 2006 and 2007. The study included 179 marathons
with more than 740,000 finish times and included more than 90% of the total number of marathon finishers in those two

Of the 179 marathons, the Boston Marathon had the highest rate of Boston qualifying finishers at 36.4%. But, first you
will need to qualify in some other marathon before you can attempt to re-qualify with your Boston finish. With Boston
excluded from the data, the overall qualifying rate is 10.1%.

There are six marathons within driving distance of Rochester among the top 25 in qualifying percentages (statistics are
two-year averages):It is interesting that among the top 25 races for Boston qualifying times, only Boston and the Philadelphia Marathon had more than 5,000 finishers. Sixteen of the top 25 races had fewer than 1,000 finishers.
Our Rochester Marathon was ranked 83rd out of the 179 marathons in the study with 13.4% of finishers running Boston
qualifying times. My personal opinion is that this ranking grossly understates the potential of the event as a Boston
qualifier. The event is the right size: small enough that you can run your own pace right from the gun and big enough so
you’ll have other runners to catch in the later miles and adequate support throughout. The course is flat enough to run a
fast time yet has enough variety to keep it interesting. One thing that has been missing is active promotion of the race as
a Boston qualifier.
Globalization, Oil and Your Running Shoes
Old friends at Phidippides Encino, my favorite running shop in the Los Angeles area, sent the following blurb in their
May newsletter (http://phidippidesencino.com/):
“Virtually every manufacturer we deal with is announcing price increases and sending warning letters out that even
steeper price increases on the order of 12-20% will follow over the next 6-12 months. China is now the source for over
90% of the shoes sold in the US and the cost of doing business in China has skyrocketed – labor laws and environmental
laws have changed; the dollar has fallen against nearly every currency in the world… Add in the cost of petroleum (the
raw material for EVERY part in your running shoes), and the impact that oil prices have on the cost of transportation of
raw materials and finished goods and you can see why these price increases are inevitable.”

Going Long – Streak Runners
Usually when I write about going long, it refers to long runs and races. This time, the topic is streak runners…
those folks who have managed to run some minimum distance every day for more years than most of us have
been runners. Streak runners are those rare individuals who manage to run through injuries, natural disasters,
business trips and family crises to keep their records alive.
Most streak runners are relatively unknown runners with a world-class compulsion to keep their streak alive.
You can check out the list at the United States Running Streak Association web site (http://runeveryday.com).
The most famous streak runner in the world has to be Ron Hill. The Brit began his streak in December 1964
when he was becoming a world-class runner. He was the second man to break 2:10 in the marathon and ran
the Olympic Marathon three times. He claims his streak is intact at 44 years although his criterion for a daily
run is pretty flexible… one mile at any pace. He has needed to go that low several times, reportedly doing his
mile the day after bunion surgery in 27 minutes on crutches and doing only a mile after a car crash in which he
broke his sternum.
Hill was already a famous streak runner when I began a 2-mile minimum streak in 1981. My streak ended after only 14 months. As streaks go, it wasn’t much. My streak ended the day after I finished the 1982 Western
States 100 Mile Endurance Run. It was my first trail ultra and I was not adequately trained for mass quantities
of downhill running (about 20,000 feet of elevation loss). In the vernacular of the day, I “trashed my quads”
and was fortunate to finish under 24 hours and buckle. Immediately after finishing and for the next couple of
days walking was painful and I could only negotiate stairs by going down them backwards.

Downhill Running – Run Faster at Phelps?
I recently found a nice description of what happened to my legs at the Western States. Exercise scientist Ross
Tucker writes in The Science of Sport (http://scienceofsport.blogspot.com):
“The reason is that when we run down hill, the muscle has to work very hard to DECELERATE
us, and it actually involves a different type of muscle contraction. It’s called eccentric, and the
muscle actually lengthens when it contracts (confusing name, huh?). A normal muscle contract,
when you pick up a weight or walk up a flight of stairs, for example, is called concentric. The
problem with an eccentric contraction is that the muscle gets very tiny tears and these are the
source of all the pain… Because the muscle swells up, and the nerves become very sensitive as
the body tries to fix the damage and the end result is major pain… [that] can last for days…”
So, if you planning to run the hilly Phelps 20K in August, what can do you to ensure you don’t trash your
quads on the two steep down hills and will be able to fly over the last 5K to the finish? Ross Tucker continues
with these suggestions:
“So what do you do about it? My theory, borne out by science, is that practice makes perfect.
You have to teach the muscle how to work eccentrically and this means training very specifically. You have to run downhill often and work out in the gym often. People do this – they hit
the gym with passion, but I feel that they focus on the wrong part of the contraction – it’s the
lowering of the weight, not lifting it that is important, because lowering is the eccentric contraction. So that’s the first point – plenty of lowering of weights in the gym.
As for downhill running, it helps, but can obviously be overdone. Everything thing in moderation, but in my opinion, it’s the technique that is most important in running downhill. When
you run downhill, what you need to do is lower your hips, so that you land on bended knee and
softly, to absorb the impact with some cushioning. Also, don’t lean backwards, this can be very
risky, because it loads the leg with the whole body weight coming down.”
The description of the technique seems a little vague. Comments I found here (http://www.ultrunr.com/
downhill.html) and other sources seem to be describing the same technique:
Run downhill with slightly flexed knees and a short, quick turnover. Try to stay perpendicular to the surface
on which you are running and run as you would on level ground, except that instead of "pushing off" to propel
yourself forward, you let gravity provide the "propelling" force and you just have to turn your legs over fast
enough to keep from falling forward. Practice the technique starting with slight downhill grades and build up
to steeper grades.

How Do Elite Runners Land?
Coming down off the hills and onto a flat, fast road like the finishing 5K at Phelps, what is the optimal running technique: Heel, mid-foot or forefoot? Until recently, most coaches and experts accepted that heel striking was the most
effective technique simply because most athletes did it. And the shoe manufacturers gave us stability and motion-control
shoes to control pronation and prevent injury.
Today, a vocal faction is advocating that forefoot landing is better and teaching techniques to avoid landing on the heel
and “facilitate the use of the spring mechanism of the foot.” The shoe companies have responded with shoes that simulate “barefoot running” (e.g., the Nike Free shoes, the Newton shoes discussed in May, etc.). This 180-degree shift is, of
course, in the absence of much data to support either claim.
The exercise scientists at The Science of Sport blog (http://scienceofsport.blogspot.com) report on an interesting Japanese study of elite runners and foot-strike patterns during actual races. Scientists set up a high-speed camera at the 15K
mark of the 2004 Sapporro International Half Marathon. They were able to film the foot strike of 248 men and 35
women and characterize them as heel, mid-foot or forefoot strikers. Based on the fashion of the day, you would expect
that the majority of the elite runners should land on the forefoot and the heel strikers should finish towards the back of
the field. And you would be wrong…
The vast majority of the elite runners were heel strikers: 75% heel strikers versus 24% mid-foot strikers and only 1%
forefoot strikers. Looking at the distribution of foot-strike patterns across finishing times, the percentage of mid-foot
strikers is highest among the fastest runners (about 35% versus 60% heel strikers among the top 50 finishers) and trends
downward to about 20% versus 80% heel strikers among runners in positions 150-200.
These data suggest several things. First, and most clearly, you can be an elite runner without changing your running
technique to land on the mid-foot or forefoot. Less clear is whether becoming a mid-foot runner would make you a
faster runner. Perhaps it is the case that running faster automatically changes the runner’s gait toward landing on the
mid-foot. Consider the case of an elite male runner in a 5000-meter race. The last lap or two will be covered in less than
60 seconds or 15 seconds per 100 meters. Ask a typical heel-striking recreational runner to run 100 meters in 15 seconds
andthat runner will have to sprint, landing on the mid-foot or even forefoot.
Another Kind of Streak Extended
Regular readers will recall that about a year ago I was first diagnosed with Morton’s Neuroma, a dibilitating injury to the
nerves that extend under the metatarsals into the toes. After new orthotics, a round of cortisone shots and six months of
no running (but lots of road cycling), I began a cautious build-up in January with the optimistic goal of running the
BPAC 6 Hour Distance Classic (www.wny-ultra.org/bpac/). Running two to three days a week, my January to April
monthly mileage was about what I used to run weekly: 42, 50, 74, and 65 miles. Long runs were limited to three 10
milers and one 13 miler. Objectively, my running training was barely adequate for a 10K. The wild cards were my extensive cross training bike miles (262, 121, 125 and 199 miles for January through April respectively) and experience at
going long.
I ran my first marathon in 1974. Every year since I have run at least one marathon or ultra. The BPAC was my opportunity to extend the streak by running at least 26.2 miles or optimistically, 50K in the six hours.
Short Story: I completed 10 laps of the 3.25-mile course in 6:08 for a pro-rated 31.83 miles in 6 hours. Using the familiar ultrarunning run/walk strategy (run a mile, walk a minute while eating and drinking, repeat until done), I ran remarkably even splits, 3:04 for the first 5 laps and 3:04 for the second 5 laps. My last lap was my fastest as I skipped the walk
breaks to get it done quicker.
Epilogue: My foot was pain-free during the race but was sore at the site of the neuroma for several days afterwards.
Cycling has turned out to be a great recovery workout… no impact means you can spin for a hour without aggragrating
sore muscles. My first and so far only post-race run was 11 days after the race. The neuroma was sore for several days
afterwards so it’s back to an extended period of cycling.
Going Really Long: Run the Nation Update
Andrew Wahila, Matthew Durkin and Ken Stannard started from Tybee Island, GA on February 1st. As this is written,
they are in Arizona with about three weeks remaining. By the time you read this, they should be finishing in San Diego.

Charlie McMullen (1951-2003)
Charlie McMullen was a very versatile runner and inspirational figure and possibly the greatest runner ever
from Greater Rochester Area. He helped bring national recognition to every team he represented from Spencerport High School, Cobleskill Junior College, the University of Missouri, the Rochester Track Club, the
Greater Rochester Track Club and on to the Genesee Valley Harriers. He excelled at any distance, ranging
from the half-mile all the way to the marathon.
Charlie was the Class B NY State High School Cross Country champion in 1968 while at Spencerport High
School. He was a Junior College All-American at Cobleskill Junior College and was a three-time NCAA Division I All-American at the University of Missouri, earning the award once each in cross country, indoor track
and outdoor track. In 1972 at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships he placed 13th despite losing a shoe early on in the rain-soaked race. Charlie anchored the Missouri distance medley relay team, which
won a national championship at the 1974 NCAA Division I Indoor Track Championships. He still holds the
Missouri school record in the outdoor 1,500-meter run, with his 3:41.90 at the 1973 NCAA Division I Outdoor
Track Championships - which stands as one of the oldest records still on the books. That run placed him 4th in
the race. At Missouri, he helped mentor his younger brother, Tim, who eventually won the Big Eight cross
country individual title in 1975. In the spring of 1973, Charlie became the first Rochester Area runner to break
four minutes in the mile, which he accomplished twice that year with a best of 3:56.9.
After his collegiate career, Charlie got into running marathons, and after a two-year layoff, he got back into
shape and won the 1978 Drake Relays marathon, with a time of 2:15:19. According to Runners' World magazine, he was the first of only a handful of Americans who have broken both four minutes in the mile and 2:16
in the marathon.
Charlie made his home in Rochester, N.Y., where he and his wife, Nancy, worked as special education teachers. He earned a lifetime achievement award from his local Special Olympics program due to his efforts with
the program. Until being stricken with cancer, he remained active in running, and consistently remained near
the top of the national Masters rankings for his age group. At 41, he set a world record for the 40-44 age group
with a time of 9:12.5 in the 2-mile run.
Charlie lost his battle with cancer, passing away in August of 2003.

The Greater Rochester Track Club (GRTC) is a not for profit, volunteer organization, that was founded in
1955. It is one of the oldest and largest running clubs in the northeast. GRTC has approximately 500 members,
consisting of runners, walkers, athletes and fitness enthusiasts, encompassing an eight county region. Our
goals are to help you be more fit and provide information about the local running scene. We also encourage
local race participation for fun and fitness, recognizing such achievement at the GRTC Annual Awards Banquet. Whether you are a jogger or runner, ready to race or someone keeping in shape, consider a GRTC Membership.
