Stolz RD, LD Dietitian Consultant Summer is here! It is the perfect time to enjoy outdoor cooking and picnics. The only way to keep those functions fun is to keep it safe! It is important to keep food safe because it prevents us from getting sick due to bacteria or other harmful material in the food. As we age, our immune system and stomach change making it easier for us to get sick if we do eat unsafe food. When grilling out this summer remember to: thaw food only in the refrigerator, microwave oven, or under cold running water, use a covered non-metallic container to marinate meat in the refrigerator (then throw marinate away), and use a thermometer to ensure proper internal cooked temperature. The following are tips on how to keep all food safe: Wash hands and surfaces often. It’s important to wash your hands with soap for at least 20 secMary Louonds is 90 years young! rinsing thoroughly after with running water.
