The land had been sold to John Richbell, an Englishman, by Siwanoy Indians in 1661, and was the site of the Battle of Heathcote Hill in 1776. The name Mamaroneck is an Indian word whose meanings include ”a place where we gather.” Its two halves were joined into one commercial village in the 1890s, creating the Village of Mamaroneck, which was occupied by just over one thousand residents. Families from New York City held summer residences in Mamaroneck, leading to the growth of neighborhoods such as Greenhaven, Orienta, and Shore Acres, whose tree-lined streets grace the coastal borders of the village. In 1848, the local railroad from New York City began to service Mamaroneck; this line is now operated by Metro North. Today, the Village is primarily a residential community with a population of nearly nineteen thousand, many of whom are commuters working in Manhattan. Its total area of 6.7 square miles (17.3 km²) incorporates both 3.2 square miles (8.4 km²) of land and 3.5 square miles (9.0 km²) of water. Due to its advantageous coastal location, Mamaroneck boasts a major 6 Village of Mamaroneck Chamber of Commerce inland harbor with boat building facilities, recreational boating services, and a variety of other recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike. The Village also includes fifty-five miles of roads. Mamaroneck Avenue and US-1, sometimes called the Boston Post Road, are its main commercial areas, as well as a small industrial area on Fenimore Road. The Village of Mamaroneck, which operates under a Council-Manager form of government, is incorporated into two separate Towns, divided by the Mamaroneck River. To the west of the river is the Town of Mamaroneck, while the Town of Rye encompasses the areas to the east. The Village hosts a volunteer fire department, which operates out of four fire stations and includes one truck company and four engine companies. In addition, Mamaroneck EMS, which has headquarters on North Barry Avenue, consists of both volunteers and paid medics. Mamaroneck is known as “The Friendly Village,”with a diverse population of people from all over the world and a desire to welcome and appreciate all cultures. mamaroneckchamberofcommerce.org 7 RYE NECK UNION FREE SCHOOL DISTRICT 698-6171 Rye Neck High School Rye Neck Middle School MAMARONECK UNION FREE SCHOOL DISTRICT 220-3000 F.
