BACKGROUND
When the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center opened in 1977, it was a 310,000 square foot,
200-bed hospital designed to meet the growing needs of the central Illinois community. Since
then, the center has expanded with the addition of a regional cancer center, numerous labs, a
33-bed skilled nursing unit and a $25.5 million project that added 115,000 square feet to the
facility while renovating 50,000 square feet of existing space.
OBJECTIVES
The medical center’s long-term goals included a master plan that added a four-story
medical office pavilion to provide space for 15 specialists. It also added space for cardiac
rehabilitation, employee assistance programs, outpatient counseling, a fixed-base MRI unit,
and health management services. The renovation provided for fully upgraded mechanical
systems capable of servicing the both the existing and new facilities and capable of
accommodating future growth.
SOLUTIONS
Nogle & Black employed a number of strategies to enable the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health
Center to achieve its goals:
• Pre-Planning – thorough preconstruction planning enabled us to
establish a phased construction scheme and schedule that would allow the hospital to
remain operational during the construction.
• Coordination – careful coordination of equipment and material deliveries to the site
ensured that they would arrive when needed, minimizing any disruption to hospital
staff, personnel and patients.
• Extra Care – the project proceeded smoothly in large part because our employees also
took extra care in the performance of their duties, including the
implementation of infection control and noise and vibration management measures.
