THE DEFENDER - Clan Kincaid
THE DEFENDER The Official Publication of the Kincaid Clan Issue Number 74, - June Madam Arabella’s Column Fellow Kincaid's, Kinsfolk, Friends, May I start with a thank you to Bob for such a fantastic issue of The Defender last time. It looks so smart with its updated format. I am sure everyone agrees that ‘the makeover’ is a great success. It is exciting to see the 2014 tour start to take shape and to know that so many of our shared family are hoping to take part. In March, thanks to Brigadier Bill Kincaid, I was privileged to be invited to the Houses of Parliament in London to attend a small luncheon which was held in memory of one the First World Wars finest fighter pilots – Samuel Marcus Kinkead otherwise known as ‘Kink’ Kinkead. Dr Julian Lewis who is a Member of Parliament researched Kink’s life and was so inspired and moved by it that he wrote a book called ‘Racing Ace’ which I believe can now be bought via our website. Dr Lewis also hosts an annual luncheon in remembrance of Kink and I enjoyed the company of a small number of the Kinkead-Weekes family and Brigadier and Mrs Bill Kincaid in a beautiful dining room in the House of Commons. It was an absolute delight to be a part of celebrating the achievements of one the finest and outstandingly brave men of the First World War who also happened to be a Kinkead… I quote from Brigadier Bills Book “This I’ll Defend” a few of the many words that were written following his death in 1928 which sum up his character: “When Kinkead, still a flight lieutenant, went deep into the Solent in his Supermarine S.5 late in the afternoon of March 12 1928, when attempting to beat the world’s speed record, the Royal Air Force lost, without doubt, its finest junior officer. He was remarkably brave, a brilliant pilot, ideal leader and straight as a die in all his dealings with his juniors and seniors…. ...He was junior to officers who were unworthy of cleaning his shoes.” It was both humbling and inspiring to be remembering his life together. I mentioned in the last Defender that there would be a Service this September to commemorate the 500 years of the Scottish Soldier. We now know it will be held in St Giles’ Cathedral, Edinburgh and all proceeds will go equally to Erskine (an organisation which has been providing nursing and medical care for veterans since 1916) and also Combat Stress. We are honoured to have the author and historian Alistair Moffat giving us an address on the Battle of Flodden. It will be rather extraordinary to be there listening to it whilst remembering one of our ancestors - James Kincaid (whose death was recorded in the Flodden death roll alongside Earls, Dukes and other notable people who were killed so I think it may be a fair assumption that he was probably the Kincaid Clan Chief at the time). Afterwards The Chiefs, their families and others representing many Clans will gather in The Signet Library for a reception. This building is well known for being designed by the last King’s architect in Scotland in 1840. I am looking forward to seeing it as I have not been there before and it was apparently described by King George lV as “the finest drawing room in Europe”. Half term is nearly upon us and we are planning a trip to London to take our children to see Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace which will be fun. It will also be a trip down memory lane for me as Giles and I started our married life in Wellington Barracks (right ‘next door’ to Buckingham Palace) in a Quarter there for the first year. I have so many memories of all the scarlet tunics and huge bearskins that the Grenadier Officers wear! ‘Changing the Guard’ is a wonderful piece of British pageantry which belongs to the Household Troops, better known as the Guards who have carried out this duty since 1660. I remember the beautiful sight of all the soldiers, looking so fine, preparing to Change the Guard at Buckingham and St James’s Palace on the Wellington Barracks parade square – being inspected by Giles - and then marching out with the band in the lead ready to take their turn guarding our Queen. Angus is embracing all that his new school has to offer and in particular has ‘discovered’ a love for rowing which has meant that the warmer weather is very welcome! I understand the river was a wee bit on the chilly side during the very cold weather of the recent long winter months. Jessie loves her music – piano and singing are the things she loves most and it is such a joy to hear her voice soaring around the house in preparation for her up and coming exam! Ella is enjoying her last term of her primary school and she and Dominic have their heads down learning lots and lots of lines for their big parts in their rather ambitious end of year production. Kalula starts school in September which is hard to imagine… Four years old seems too young! 1 THE DEFENDER Issue Number 74, - June 2013 The Official Publication of the Clan Treasurer Steven Bates (1100) 5201 Meadow Ridge Edina, Minnesota 55439 [email protected] Madam’s Column (Continued) time! What would be its currency? Answers to these questions are promised within the next six months. Also promised is legislation lowering the voting age for the referendum to 16. The question is simply put: “Should Scotland become an independent country?” And the date Scottish voters will decide that long simmering issue is Sept. 18, 2014. Scottish separation, or not, is daily news in the United Kingdom, but it has received very little attention so far in North America where most of us live, so I thought it would be a good idea to seize upon The Defender’s launch of a “letters” column to bring clan members up to date. The Electoral Commission has ruled there cannot be an official start to campaigning until May, 2014, which is16 weeks before the vote. However, the opposing sides are well organized under the titles of “Yes Scotland” which is a coalition of the SNP, the Green party and two small socialist parties, and “Better Together” which brings together Labour, Tories, and Liberal Democrats. The commission has also set rules on how much money can be spent on the campaigns by these I hope and expect that Madam Arabella will report on developments in her regular messages as clan chief, and I groups, as well as by other groups such as trade would very much look forward in due course to her unions. telling us whether she favours Scottish separation. As a Canadian living in English Canada, I can Ever since the Scottish National Party (SNP) won a substantial majority in the Scottish parliament a couple of years ago it has been a foregone conclusion that a referendum would be held. In fact some opposition members have criticized the government for not getting on with it sooner so that the issue could be put out of the way and other matters tackled. The SNP won the election for reasons other than its promotion of independence and in fact the polls then, and now, do not favour it. report that a similar issue of independence by the Province of Quebec has been with us for many decades. A provincial government which promotes separation is frequently elected, not on the issue of separation, but because the party in power has messed up. Once in power a Separatist-oriented government has not been able to muster enough support to actually take the largely French-speaking province out of Canada. The current polls indicate that is also the case in Scotland. A voting date of Sept. 18, 2014, is aimed at building on Keith Kincaid, Toronto what is likely to be prevailing Scottish pride because it comes just a few weeks after the Commonwealth Games Have a comment, concern, etc., send your letter to (a narrower version of the Olympics) are held in “Letter to the Editor” via email to CommuniGlasgow, and just three months after the 700th [email protected]. However, if you want a personal reply, Although the government of First Minister Alex provide an email address with your letter. Salmond has set the date, it has yet to provide details on how an independent Scotland would function. What would be its tax, welfare and pension polices, or how would it deal with health and education once it was free of directives from the U.K government in London? 3 THE DEFENDER A Word From The Clan Membership Director to: Kathi Kincaid 2118 S Higgins Ave Missoula, MT 59801 WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST LIFE MEMBERS Clan Kincaid—March of the Clans, Edinburg Scotland 2009 The Clan Kincaid Association International has 416 members for 2012/2013. Avery was a previous member of Clan Kincaid. 4 THE DEFENDER A Word From The Clan Communications Director Robert T. Kincaid, Jr.,Lt Col (Ret), USAF (760) of Asian Indian heritage. Hopefully, we will get more inputs for future editions of the Defender from members of the Clan. Please send in your stories. Well, my first issue is behind me and it was quite an experience from which I learned a lot. Hopefully, you will only see improvement in future editions of the “Defender”. I want to thank all of those who participated in making the first issue a success. Grant Kincaid continues to move out on our Web site and I believe it will only improve. Please let me know if you would like to have changes made. The Clan Web will only be as good as members of the Clan make. Please let me have your suggestions. In the March edition of the “Defender”, I asked for thoughts on having an email group for the younger members of the Clan. The Board has had some discussions however, nothing concrete has been decided. There are some security concerns that we must overcome before we can press forth with this effort. The other recommendation was for us to get inputs from those children in our clan who are not of Clan Kincaid heritage, such as by adoption, but are members by being part of a Kincaid family. The first article follows and is from my daughter Regan who is In Kinship, Bob The Different Faces of the Kincaid Clan My name is Regan Kincaid and I was born in Nagpur, India and adopted by Robert and Ramona Kincaid (760) of America. I admit it is kind of weird being an Indian and a member of a Scottish Clan. However, the history behind the Clan is interesting and I have realized that bloodlines are not necessarily the thing that ties the Clan together. People have to be accepting of others and this Clan is. From The Kincaid Clan Library Currently, we have two books in the Clan Web library that you can browse. A new recommendation sheet has been added to the Clan web library page that you can use to recommend a book. Please fill it out and get your favorite Kincaid book into A Word From the Clan Treasurer—Mr. Steve Bates (1100) We have taken the first steps towards becoming a 501(c ) (3) recognized by the IRS. A Limited Liability Company was started in Kentucky with the name, Clan Kincaid Association International. We will then use this entity to request tax-exempt status from the IRS. We were issued a non-profit FEIN by the IRS which is another building block in the process. I anticipate that the process will take approximately 6-9 months to complete and, at that point, we should be a non-profit entity recognized by the IRS. This means a portion or all of your dues may become tax deductible and we may qualify for cheaper shipping via the United States Postal Service. Due to the nature of the hand-off of the treasurer duties from Steve Kincaid to myself; the majority of the income and expenses will be recognized during Q2 2013 rather than Q1 2013. 2013 First Quarter Financial Report Old National Bank Accounts Balance: $11,276.29 Respectfully submitted, Steven G Bates, Treasurer, Clan Kincaid Association International Lennox/Kincaid Castle 5 THE DEFENDER A Word From the Chief Commissioner Suzanne Hakeos (1118) The Passing of the Torch Twin Cities Scottish Club and the St. Andrew's Society of Minnesota (served as Secretary and Treasurer covering several terms). He and his wife, Elizabeth, are members of the Twin Cities Branch, Royal Scottish Country Dance Society. Steve and Liz participated in the Clan Kincaid Scottish tour in 2003 with their children, Andy and Kate, and both are looking forward to participating in the Clan Kincaid Gathering – 2014 Tour. We welcome Steve as our new Minnesota Commissioner! Ron Kincaid (L-13), along with his wife Alma, have been a beacon of light for Kincaid's as Minnesota's Commissioner since 1991. His knowledge and passion for the Kincaid heritage has been passed on to many searching Kincaids. His guidance and support of the Clan Association has been strong ever since. Ron and Alma are part of the Minnesota Coalition of Scottish Clans. Ron was Vice President of the Coalition for a term organizing the Scottish games at McAlister College, and other Scottish events in Minnesota. With Steve and Elizabeth Kincaid they have won several best Clan tents, and sponsored many In Kinship, Scottish awards for Scottish dancing through the Kincaid name. It is with full respect that we, the Clan Suzanne Hakeos Association, say thank you for your Chief Commissioner service, dedication, continued support and guidance as Ron passes the Commissioner's torch to Steve Kincaid. Steve Kincaid (L-74) has served on the interim Board in 2011 and 2012 as the Clan Association's Treasurer/Secretary. He has been a member of Clan Kincaid since 1989 and a life member since 2003. He has held several Board positions in Scottish organizations in Minnesota such as the Coalition of Scottish Clans (President 2003-2004), th 12 Annual Scottish Festival & Celtic Gathering. It was a beautiful day Saturday, May 4 at the 12th annual Scottish Festival & Celtic Gathering. It was a sunny day but didn’t get too hot. Not a sign of rain this year. It was the best day they’ve had for several years for the festival. We arrived at Bridgeport Friday afternoon and set up our tent and then went back to our room. We did a little shopping later that evening. My daughter Maggie and her husband Terry Knorr had to be in Kingwood for annual National Guard training but she drove to Bridgeport on Saturday to join us and was a big help along with my grandson Bradley Knorr and my son Daniel Hoskins. We had three Kincaid descendants visit our tent and that made it a special day. They told me about their history and we talked for quite a while about the Kincaid families and the different spellings of the name. We appreciated the visitors and look forward to next year’s Clan Kincaid Festival at Bridgeport, WV. 6 Your Clan Kincaid Team Commissioners Chief Commissioner Suzanne Hakeos (1118) 305 E. Kincaid (sometimes spelled Kinkaid) of Lewiston, Idaho. Mr. Kincaid, navigating the entire course of the Colorado River in a small skiff, left Green River Wyoming in October 1908 and arrived in Yuma, Arizona in March 1909. The first article on March 12, 1909 covers Mr. Kincaid's arrival in Yuma and mentions that “some interesting archeological discoveries were unearthed” (see text of article here: www.mysteriousarizona.com/ kincaidyuma.html). It is the article of April 5, 1909, however, that elaborates on this discovery. Mr. Kincaid is alleged to have uncovered a cave entrance high up on the Grand Canyon wall which contained huge rooms and many ancient artifacts including a number of mummies of Oriental and possibly Egyptian origin. According to the article, this discovery had the potential for changing history as we know it for North America. An Archeologist by the name of S.A. Jordan, working in conjunction with the Smithsonian, was involved in the evaluation of this discovery. There is an air of mystery and possibly conspiracy that surrounds this story, together with many unanswered questions. Whether you believe the story or not, it makes for interesting reading. There are a number of websites that deal in depth with the matter and you can read the entire text of the April 5, 1909 article at: www.spiritofmaat.com/archive/nov2/ prns/gazette.htm. As the lulling melodies of the pipes wafted in the air throughout the weekend, we were visited by a total of 24 Kincaid's this year. Gary and Julienne Kincaid from Sedona, Arizona were gracious enough to offer their assistance for the weekend, which was very much appreciated. We met a lot of new cousins and distributed 3 membership applications. We were delighted to find that our clan was represented this year in the athletic competition by a new acquaintance from New Mexico, Benjamin Stanley. We concluded the events of Saturday with dinner and camaraderie at Kincaid’s Restaurant in downtown Phoenix.
