Self-regulation difficulties create serious problems for kids and

kids move beyond the “survival level,” increase adaptive
behavior, and improve relationship skills. This model, with individual, small group, and school-wide applications is facilitated
by our own calm, uses the strengths and resources of the student to set goals for behavior change, teaches skills to selfregulate, and improves critical social-emotional competencies.
Handouts include assessment, activities, and evaluations.

“Celebrate School Counseling: Catch the Sensation!”
Remember the Dinosaurs? Don’t let school counseling become extinct…Dinosaurs did not keep data, but school counselors
must. Students need you now more than ever. It is a great time to be a school counselor. However, you must advocate in
order to celebrate good times. Come hear examples of “Level 5 School Counselors” from around the USA and learn how to
become “Level 5” from Brian Law. Feel the sensation of school counseling!
Brian Law was named the 2003-2004 Georgia School Counselors (GSCA) Human Rights Award Winner,
Region 10 Elementary Counselor of the Year and Georgia Elementary Counselor of the year. He went
on to be named the 2004-2005 National Elementary Counselor of the Year. Law was the GSCA
Writer of the Year in 2006. He has served on the GSCA leadership team for 8 years and served
as president for 2008-2009; he was also the 2010-11 Finance Chair. He was recognized by

school counseling students. He received the 2009-2010 Georgia Secondary School Counselor of the Year award and was
named an ASCA Top 10 School Counselor of the Year Finalist for 2009. Brian was recognized by the Georgia Safe Schools

New Ideas For Elementary Counseling Programs
Diversity, Multicultural & Social Justice
Issues
John Linney MA
Topic:
Presenter:
Nothing energizes a counseling program more than new
ideas. Join us for new ideas for working with boys, developing resiliency groups, solution-based counseling, grief counseling, and using e-books in your counseling program.
Reproducibles for each topic.
Bullying and harassment poison school climates and undermines learning and healthy development. Adults cannot fix
this alone. Bystanders hold the key to stopping it because
they see, hear and know about incidents and can intervene
in ways adults can’t. The workshop demonstrates how to
“wake up the courage” of bystanders by training diverse and
influential student leaders with communication skills to stop
bullying, cyber-bullying and relational aggression.

Counselors have a distinct opportunity to share empowering
information with students, parents and teachers that could
change the way students perceive themselves as learners
and how others interact and work with them in school. By
equipping students with their unique learning profile, regarding how they process information, they can begin to take
ownership of their learning and employ the strategies that
work most effectively and efficiently for them.
School Counseling (P-16)
Leslie Morgan PhD Psychologist LMFT
Successful school counselors face multiple challenges
requiring them to develop practical wisdom to help students’
achievement and social-emotional growth. Yet, beginning
school counselors are educated in the ideal of ASCA standards of data-driven practices. Often a gap exists between
practical wisdom and the trends in the ASCA standards.

The committee is not required to grant an award if there are less than 3 nominees, per category. The committee reserves the
right not to present an award in any category when, in the opinion of the committee, there is insufficient evidence of outstanding contribution.
Advance notification will allow recipients to make plans to be present during the TSCA Annual Luncheon in November to
receive their award. The photograph submitted with the nomination packet will be included in the luncheon program, and the
winners may be asked to submit a short video clip (2-3 minutes) for presentation at the awards ceremony.
Nomination Packets NOT meeting the following guidelines will be automatically disqualified.
Submit four (4) copies of the nomination packet (except photograph) for each nominee. Each packet must be organized in
the following order and contain these items:
1. A complete packet must be stapled in the upper left-hand corner ONLY. Packets are not to be submitted in covers of
any type;
2. The nominee must a be a TSCA member, as of July 1, 2012; membership is verified through the TCA office. This does
not apply for the legislator or advocate of the year category;
3. One (1) original professional-quality photograph of the nominee must be submitted. A black and white photo is
preferred, and it must be at least 1 ¾” x 2”, but larger sizes are acceptable. The photograph must be clearly marked
with the name of the nominee on the reverse side and submitted in a clear, plastic bag; and
4. Each packet can include up to 16 sheets of 8 ½” x 11” paper (front only). The official TSCA nomination form is not
part of the 16 pages. Winning packets are kept for TSCA files.
Each packet must also include the following:
1. Official TSCA nomination form and checklist must be stapled as the cover for each packet. This is the only
acceptable cover;
2. Letter of recommendation from the nominator. This letter should contain a brief description of the contribution for
which the individual is being nominated;
3. Vita for the nominee (not more than two (2) pages, front side only;
4. Statement, not more than three (3) pages, describing the program, activity, or contribution demonstrating the
individual’s worthiness to receive the award. The program, activity, or contribution must have occurred within the last
five (5) years;
5. The remaining items are those of supplementary evidence and must be limited to no more than ten (10) pages. This
must include four (4) letters of recommendation/support and must include one (1) letter from the nominee’s
supervisor/administrator, one (1) from a colleague and no more than two (2) other letters of support. These “any two
(2)” letters may be from other administrators, colleagues, parents, students, community leaders, etc. (NOTE:
Legislator and Advocate of the Year nominees are NOT required to have letters of support from
their supervisors);
6. Also, in the supplementary evidence section, the nominator may submit any other evidence of the program, activity, or
accomplishment. Again, ALL of this evidence MUST have occurred within the last five (5) years; and
7. Pages must have printing only on the front and faxes will not be accepted.
The nomination form is available on the following page and also online at www.TexasSchoolCounselor.org.
