ISSUE 37 JANUARY 2014 Projects General Shaikh Mohammed opens World Future Energy Summit General Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, attended the official opening ceremony of the 7th edition of the World Future Energy Summit (WFES) being held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Centre (ADNEC), as part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week. The summit runs from January 20-22, 2014 and is held under the theme: “Powering the Future of Energy Innovation”, saw the participation of a number of heads of states and governments, representatives of international organizations, international companies and experts. The World Future Energy Conference (WFES), which is the largest summit of energy experts, will share the best international practices, unveil new products and discuss sustainable solutions to tackle present and future energy challenges. As the centerpiece of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, WFES 2014 expects to receive 30,000 attendees from over 172 countries, up from the 152 countries that participated last year. Since its inception in 2008, WFES has grown to become the leading discussion platform for renewable energy, clean technology and sustainability, and it is now considered the pre-eminent international event for government and industry decision makers to find viable, sustainable solutions to the world’s growing energy challenges. GCC construction market worth $1.3tn The GCC civil construction market showed signs it had returned to growth last year with a total of $59bn worth of contracts awarded. The volume of deals was the highest since 2008, the high of the financial crisis. The data was compiled in a MEED report on the GCC construction industry. Other key factors which have driven this growth include high oil prices and strong population growth, said MEED. Excluding schemes on hold or cancelled, the report estimates the current value of live civil construction projects to be just over $1.3tn, with $935bn in execution including long-term megaprojects, $81bn out to tender, $211bn in design phases and $136bn under study. www.abudhabichamber.ae | 1 ISSUE 37 JANUARY 2014 NPCC wins $885m contract on Abu Dhabi’s Lower Zakum field Abu Dhabi has awarded an $885m contract to local group National Petroleum Construction Company (NPCC) to carry out the first phase of it Lower Zakum oil lines replacement project. The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract was awarded by project owner Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company (Adma-Opco), which is aiming to expand the capacity of the Lower Zakum offshore oil field. MEED reported in September 2013 that NPCC was the frontrunner to win the contract after the Abu Dhabi-based contractor submitted the lowest commercial bid on the EPC tender. Adma-Opco also received bids from the US’ McDermott and Italy’s Saipem for the brownfield scheme, which it decided to fast-track due to the critical need for the pipeline replacements. The project’s front-end engineering and design (feed) was completed by French engineering company Technip, with the scope of the scheme adjusted several times during this phase. US engineering group Fluor was awarded the feed for the project in 2012 and is expected to complete the work in the coming months. Gasco completed the initial $11bn IGD project in 2013. The development allows Gasco transfer 1 billion cubic feet a day (cf/d) of high-pressure gas from the offshore Umm Shaif field via Das Island to new onshore processing facilities at Habshan and Ruwais. The proposed expansion will see an additional 200-400 million cf/d of offshore gas processed onshore. The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) phase is expected to be tendered in three separate packages: offshore development; Das Island to Habshan offshore pipeline; and Ras al-Qila to Habshan onshore pipeline. The IGD is part of Abu Dhabi’s significant investment programme to boost gas supplies to meet growing demand. The emirate expects to complete the $10bn development of the onshore Shah sour gas field early in 2015, while a second sour gas development is planned at the Bab field. www.abudhabichamber.ae | 2 ISSUE 37 JANUARY 2014 Abu Dhabi Emirate Contractors Awards Total Project Value Estimates in US$ Billion *Estimates Abu Dhabi Emirate Major Players No. Clients Name Projects Value (US$ Billion) 1 ALDAR Properties 2 Abu Dhabi Department of Transport (DOT) 54 3 Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) 53 4 Abu Dhabi General Services PJSC (Musanada) 34 5 Tourism Development & Investment Co.
