The Kent School Games is developed through a partnership involving School Games Organisers, Specialist Sports Colleges and governing bodies of sport; all managed by KCC Sport, Leisure and Olympics Service and Advisory Service Kent. The School Games is an exciting new four level sporting competition for school children in England. The Games are designed to build on the magic of 2012 to enable every school and child to participate in competitive sport, including meaningful opportunities for disabled youngsters. With 87 Finals events in 36 sports, held between February and the end of June at 15 venues across the County. All 30,000 participants and each school who took part received certificates and there were more than 2,000 medallists overall. 1. A vehicle through which to deliver PE and Sport outcomes for young people ‘INSPIRE A GENERATION’ Dear Gold Medal Winner The Olympic and Paralympic Games were about so much more than just sporting excellence. Pierre de Coubertin the founder of the Modern Olympic Movement, saw in the Games an ideal opportunity to develop a set of universal values that could be applied to Education and Society as a whole as well as sport itself. It is this philosophy that has underpinned the Kent ‘INSPIRE Lasting Legacy’ Educational Programme. INSPIRE will build upon the opportunities and events created from the Olympic and Paralympic projects during London 2012 and ensure that children across Gravesham live, work and play through the PRIDE Values. Personal Excellence, Respect & Friendship, Inspiration, Determination & Courage, Equality Take Pride CIC lead the INSPIRE Programme for all Gravesham Schools and work with a Planning Group which comprises representatives from Gravesham head teachers and Sue Tunnicliffe, Senior Improvement Advisor for Dartford & Gravesham, in conjunction with Danny O’Donovan (School Sport Olympic Learning Consultant). The INSPIRE programme provides our young people with learning experiences across five areas Sport, Culture, Education, Values and Role Models. Tonight’s celebration evening acts as the launch for this year’s exciting calendar of events by recognising both sporting excellence and young people who are truly living the PRIDE values. We consider the PRIDE values are for life not just for London 2012 ( to borrow the famous quote). We hope that you and our other young people will continue to live by these values and that your enthusiasm for sport and life in general will form part of Gravesham’s INSPIRE Lasting Legacy. Page 3 Page 4 Ellie Simmonds, Paralympic Swimmer Lasting Legacy mosaic created by Cecil Road students Tomas was born with a paralysed foot and ankle (congenital peripheral neuropathy) and developed Type 1 diabetes when he was eighteen months old. He is due to have a complex operation to lengthen his leg during the summer holidays. Tomas is an inspiration to both adults and children. He is fully involved in all aspects of school life and always takes part in sports events competing against able-bodied children. TOMAS He never complains despite often having disturbed nights, attending numerous hospital appointments and coping with the day to day demands of living with diabetes. Tomas’s determination and strength of character make him an equal amongst his peers. The staff at Cecil Road School really feel that Tomas would be a worthy recipient of this award for his resilience in any situation. Page 5 Page 6 Gabby Down, Wheelchair Fencing Lasting Legacy mosaic created by Chantry School students Bradley was diagnosed with benign hyper-mobility syndrome in the summer of 2011. This means he lives with symptoms, such as joint pain, fatigue and joint dislocation in his everyday life. During winter, the cold weather accentuates the pain and the summer, the heat will increase his fatigue. Despite this, he carries out a normal life like any other child - playing chase, four-square, riding his bike, swimming etc. He always takes part in PE. At home, he has a regular exercise routine to practise stretches and manoeuvres to help strengthen his muscles. At school, he participates in a small group and he always puts in 100%. Bradley never complains about his pain and tiredness. When he broke his arm in the Easter holiday, all his routines went out the window. This has had severe implications - his muscles weaken quickly, so there was increased risk of dislocations and it also caused a severe hernia because of it, thus giving him problems. Not once did he ever moan about his situation. Bradley just continues his life as normal 10 year old boy. BRADLEY On top of this, Bradley has dyslexia. He struggles with his reading, but when the book is read to him, he has excellent comprehension skills. In his writing, you will have problems reading and understanding his work. When it is scribed - he writes amazing stories, using wonderful vocabulary. When he writes for a longer period, his joints will ache and due to his condition, his handwriting is poor because of his muscle weakness. Once again, he just gets on with it. In February, Year 5's literacy project was to write a Greek myth and create a book. Bradley put all his effort into this. His myth was scribed then typed up using dotted handwriting typeset. He then persevered to write up and complete his book. Bradley is a determined and inspirational boy, who just lives life to the full. Page 7 Page 8 Winning Flag Design for Personal Excellence by Raji, St Joseph's Preparatory School for the Olympic & Paralympics Values Flag Competition MYLES Myles is an outstanding young athlete. He is polite and well mannered, and always tries his best in lessons. He is eager to help set up and tidy away. Myles has shown an interest in every sport that is taught and applies great determination and enthusiasm in games. He shows leadership qualities and is able to help others on his team by encouraging them and demonstrating how they can improve their technique and skills. I am sure Myles’ passion and drive to succeed will continue to thrive in KS2, building on the skills he has already worked hard to achieve. Myles is a talented young man with the world at his feet – the only question will be......which sport will he choose? DAVID David was only a Year 4 pupil when he was entered into the Kent Championships and raced against pupils from Year 6. Remarkably he won the race, and as a result was selected to represent Kent and run at the Nationals which took place in Birmingham; a fantastic achievement for someone so young. David is an enthusiastic member of all the school teams and has contributed to their success in Sportshall Athletics, Cross Country, Quicksticks, Kwik Cricket and Primary School Athletics. The Quicksticks team were the winners of the Gravesham’s School Games qualifying tournament and went on to represent Gravesham at the West Kent Hub Games. After a hard fought tournament against teams from across West Kent, David helped his team to become Gold Medal Winners. David is clearly a very talented sportsman and hopefully will continue to enjoy success. Page 9 Page 10 Winning Flag Design for Equality by Charlotte St Joseph's Preparatory School for the Olympic & Paralympics Values Flag Competition Keira has shown determination and courage this year in her quest to learn to swim. At the start of Year 1 Keira was extremely nervous of the pool and needed to be held at all times just to get her in the water. A few tears were shed but gradually her confidence began to shine through. Coming back as a bubbly Year 2 child Keira set about learning to swim, well - that was if I could get her to stop talking!! The trust she showed me allowed her to try new things knowing I was there to support her. KEIRA Getting into the water began to get easier for her and it wasn't long before she started jumping in off the step herself!! Supported with the arm bands Keira began to kick her legs and swim across the pool. The first time she did it her classmates cheered her on and the roar when she finished still gives me goosebumps! She now puts her face in the water, and can swim on her back using every muscle she has. The finale to her fantastic year ended at the school swimming gala. Ready.....steady......go.....and she was off. The whole of KS1 children were chanting her name as she swam across and the smile she gave when she'd finished said it all - I did it!! Page 11 Page 12 Winning Flag Design for Inspiration by Miguela, St Joseph's Catholic Primary School for the Olympic & Paralympics Values Flag Competition Ben has been playing with a football since he was 2 years old. He started going to a Brazilian soccer school called Socatots every Saturday morning until he was 4 years old. He then attended the local Sports Centre and played for the Pro Futures soccer system. This gave him the opportunity to trial for the local Ebbsfleet team. Ben played for Ebbsfleet for 2 years. In his last season he scored 29 goals for Ebbsfleet playing in the SelKent (South East London & Kent) League. Ben participated in an open trials session run by Millwall two and a half years ago. Over 100 boys turned up for the trials and Ben was one of 10 that made it through. Since then Ben has trained twice a week and played games against the top clubs in the country. Ben has got through multiple cuts and seen lots of boys come and go over the last two and half years. BEN Millwall sent a scout out to watch two of his weekend games when playing for Ebbsfleet. Ben was given a Letter Of Intent by Millwall in January and on the 1 st day of the Football Association signing window in April Ben was offered a full academy contract. In May Ben went to the official signing with the club Captain of the 1st team, Head of the Millwall Academy system and the Head of Coaching. The season is now well underway and Millwall have already played games against, Arsenal, West Ham, Charlton, Fulham and Reading. The team are doing well and Ben has already scored 7 goals. Within school Ben has always worked hard in lessons and demonstrates his skills well. He is a helpful child who uses his skills to help his friends. My only hope is he remembers his time at school when he's famous!!! Page 13 Page 14 Sarah Stevenson, Taekwondo Lasting Legacy mosaic created by Holy Trinity School students Karen teaches Key Stage 1 Sport and Physical Education. London 2012 inspired her to provide a variety of new sporting activities for her pupils. She wholeheartedly embraced the PRIDE Values and encouraged her pupils to live, work and play within them. Further inspired by the Paralympic Games Karen decided to broaden her pupils sporting experience by teaching them Boccia, New Age Kurling and Goalball. Karen worked closely with Richard Gardner from Ifield School to arrange a series of friendly fixtures. KAREN The link proved to be highly successful with pupils from both St Joseph’s and Ifield feeling enriched by the whole experience. Karen has helped to create a lasting legacy link with Ifield and both schools have pledged to continue working together and have already planned a Triathlon, Goalball and Boccia experience this year for their pupils. Karen’s enthusiasm for every new challenge is infectious and makes her a fantastic role model for everyone she works with. Page 15 Page 16 Winning Flag Design for Determination & Courage by Lauren, Shorne School for the Olympic & Paralympics Values Flag Competition Thomas was out of school for eight months before coming to Ifield. Since joining the school he has made outstanding progress both academically and socially. He has faced many personal challenges but despite these he has persevered and overcome many of his difficulties to exceed expectations. Thomas is now working towards a BTEC accreditation with the Challenger Troop and he has a Bronze Award for Duke of Edinburgh. He plays an integral part in the Ifield School Woodlands. We are proud to have him as part of Ifield and honoured to have him at our school. Thomas truly demonstrates the PRIDE Values of: THOMAS Personal Excellence Inspiration Determination Equality Page 17 Page 18 Jonathon Brownlee, Triathlon Lasting Legacy mosaic created by Mayfield Grammar School MAYFIELD GRAMMAR SCHOOL GRAVESEND When she joined Mayfield Grammar School, Sarah was offered the opportunity to become a Bronze Young Ambassador. This role gave her a chance to promote the 2012 Olympic Games and deliver the Olympic and Paralympic values in her school and community. She began working with a team of girls, who are now good friends, and together they organised charity and fun events for the students in our school, which gave them opportunities to be confident and make new friends. It also helped to stop any potential bullying in school. For the next year she continued this work, mixing teachers and students, organising events and introducing new activities and alternative subjects to people who wouldn’t normally try them. Through a lot of hard work and dedication Sarah was nominated to become a Gold Ambassador and was privileged to go to the Brit Oval and meet many inspirational people. She came back motivated and eager to get active. For the past two years Sarah has expanded her role, mentoring a group of dedicated girls. She has managed to organise over 20 events that have been for over 120 students each time. This has included everything from quizzes and assemblies to ‘mini Olympics’ and fun days with other schools in Gravesham. SARAH Being a Gold Ambassador has given Sarah lots of opportunities to improve her community through volunteering and fund raising for charities such as VSU and the Ellenor Hospice’s Chyps Appeal. She hopes to be able to continue her work as a Young Ambassador as it has boosted her confidence and she has gained so much since starting it. She has many more ideas that are still to happen and has a personal aim to stop the prejudice that still exists towards disabled children. Sarah is looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead in the future. She is an excellent Gold Ambassador both in and out of school, she has made a real difference to the extra-curricular provision we have for our students. Her sunny manner, enthusiasm and tremendous organisational skills mean that she is easily able to inspire others. . Page 19 Page 20 Luke Campbell, Boxer Lasting Legacy mosaic created by Cobham Primary School students MAYFIELD GRAMMAR SCHOOL GRAVESEND Priya enjoys doing sport and it has been very much a part of her life since a young age. She has been involved in gymnastics since the age of five and she is currently competing at Silver level representing her club at Kent and regional level. On Saturdays, she teaches younger children gymnastics. She enjoys doing this very much as she was once in their position. She also does cheerleading for Meapa and they are currently training for the Nationals. She competes in two different teams – Junior Level 2, and Senior Level 3. Priya loves doing cheerleading and it has helped her team work skills a lot. She has also represented the school in many sports such as tag rugby, contact rugby, football, netball, basketball, cricket, rounders and athletics. She also attends extra-curricular clubs in all sports during and after school. Sport is her favourite part of school life. PRIYA Priya has recently joined Medway Athletics Club where she is excelling in the Pentathlon. Priya is an outstanding student who possesses an incredible amount of natural sporting talent. Page 21 Page 22 Winning Flag Design for Respect & Friendship by Morgan, Shorne Primary School for the Olympic & Paralympics Values Flag Competition MAYFIELD GRAMMAR SCHOOL GRAVESEND Alice is a very committed sportswoman who takes part in a wide range of activities both in and out of school. She is a talented netballer, having played since an early age. She plays netball up to four times a week. Alice has represented Kent in Netball as an under 12, under 14 and more recently securing a position in the under 17 squad. Alice has been a Gold Ambassador for sports leaders and through this experience has learnt and developed many skills, including organisational and communication skills. She has worked positively with primary schools students to ensure the legacy of the Olympic Games continues. This has given her the opportunity to work with an Olympic Volleyball player and also act as a ball girl for the England Netball team against Barbados. ALICE Alice loves sport and takes part in a number of activities offered by the school. She has been a member of the school Tag Rugby team, and as a result has had the opportunity to play at Twickenham, representing the South East; a once in a lifetime experience. She also takes part in horse riding and Dance outside Badminton, Football, Netball, Rounders, Basketball and Rugby, where she has taken on the roll as captain for many of the teams she participated in. Alice is a very talented, committed and delightful student who inspires everyone around her. Page 23 Page 24 Personal Excellence - Olympic & Paralympic Values MAYFIELD GRAMMAR SCHOOL GRAVESEND This school year has been a great experience for Hannah. She has been committed to her sports throughout. Last season Hannah played for Gillingham Ladies Centre of Excellence which was fantastic, playing Saturday matches against teams such as Chelsea and Arsenal. Also, at the end of the football season, she received a contract from the club, allowing her to play for the team for an additional year, without trialling. This year Hannah has been chosen to captain the Gillingham Ladies team where she shows strong leadership and outstanding ability on the field. As well as this, she very much enjoys Netball and has played for many years. Without including Netball in school, she plays up to four times a week, including playing for Kent under fourteens and she got into the potential satellite squad, (the top group!). Hannah has recently been selected to represent Kent in the under 17 squad. A massive achievement at the age of 14. Hannah loves sport and takes part in nearly every activity offered at school. Whilst our school has a good football and netball team, our biggest success has been tag rugby, in which they won many competitions resulting in being asked play at Twickenham, representing the South East…, a once in a lifetime experience. Furthermore, as she is now old enough, she can play contact rugby and in a recent competition, the team came second, meaning that they could progress to the next stage. HANNAH Hannah is an excellent organiser and is frequently put in charge of sorting out the school teams in football, netball, rounders, cricket, athletics and rugby. As well as this, there is a special gifted and talented club in which she is part of at our school. This club is for all the pupils that are talented and able in sport and it means she can try out lots of different and often new sports, like judo or fencing which have become more popular following their success in the Olympics. Hannah is also a sport/youth ambassador and this year became gold ambassador. She was chosen based on her skills and values, amongst them, sportsmanship and commitment. She is part of a small group that are trying to build up the ambassadors from various primary schools so that she can help to be a part of a lasting legacy. This means trying to get young people involved in sports or creative arts as a follow up to the Olympics and a lead up to the Commonwealth Games. Whilst volunteering, she communicates with adults as well as with younger and older children. Hannah helps them to use different skills as they complete different tasks such as trying new sports themselves or organising an event at their school. Hannah is a very talented, committed and delightful student who inspires everyone around her. Page 25 Page 26 Respect & Friendship - Olympic & Paralympic Values MAYFIELD GRAMMAR SCHOOL GRAVESEND Charlotte has been selected to be a member of the Young Ambassador Academy delivered by Take Pride CIC. Charlotte’s leadership qualities within school and her passion for sport and the values it stands for made her a perfect choice as a Young Ambassador and the unique role it plays.. Charlotte has been an inspiration and role model at the Young Ambassador Workshops. Her natural leadership qualities and interaction with the younger sports leaders from local primary schools are a pleasure to watch and it has been a delight to see Charlotte develop her own confidence and knowledge within her role. CHARLOTTE Charlotte is also instrumental in the organising of sporting activities within her own school and is willing to give up her own free time for the benefit of others. We are sure that Charlotte will go from strength to strength in her role as a Young Ambassador and continue to build on the skills she has already acquired. Page 27 Page 28 Steve Brown, Wheelchair Rugby Lasting Legacy mosaic created by Northfleet School for Girls students NORTHFLEET SCHOOL FOR GIRLS The Dementia Ambassadors are a group of year 12/13 students who volunteered to work with service users with Dementia to create life history books. The students visited the service users in their own homes, spent time getting to know them and making copies of their treasured photographs. Through volunteering the students developed a better understanding of the difficulties faced by people living with dementia and their families. As well as completing the life history books the ambassadors have contributed to several events with the aim of raising awareness about dementia within our community. These include; Health Promotion at a local primary school, Healthy Schools Fayre, AGM’s for local charity, the Health and Social Care Expo and Service user Tea Party with special guest Angela Rippon. She has worked tirelessly to implement Young Leaders and Games Makers. Young Leaders has been a roaring success at the school and Maria has monitored and supported her staff in order to make it sustainable and enjoyable for her pupils. Maria has worked closely with Take Pride to bring new sports coaches into the school to support the delivery of after school clubs and up skill the staff to teach Physical Education. MARIA She has trained her sports teams and entered many more festivals this year including Dodgeball, Boccia and New Age Kurling. Well done Maria! Page 31 Page 32 Allinson Williamson, Archery Lasting Legacy mosaic created by Raynehurst Primary School students RAYNEHURST COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL Ann has embraced her new role as PE coordinator at Raynehurst, attending teacher training and utilising all the resources available to her. She has ensured that every child has had equal opportunity to take part and enjoy sporting experiences on all levels. She has recognised and rewarded her pupils, adopting the Olympic & Paralympic values in all areas of the curriculum. ANN Ann is a confident subject leader who fully supports her colleagues in delivering a varied and fun Physical Education programme. Page 33 Page 34 Richard Kruse, Fencing Lasting Legacy mosaic created by St John’s Primary School students RIVERVIEW INFANT SCHOOL BENJAMIN Benjamin is an extremely friendly child who is always smiling. He demonstrates great kindness towards other children and will always be the first to comfort anyone who is upset. He loves writing and has demonstrated wonderful determination making great progress in this area. He is extremely polite towards adults and always tries his best in everything he does. Well done Benjamin. HANNAH Throughout her time at Riverview Infant School Hannah has always demonstrated a very positive attitude towards all areas of learning and school life. When presented with a new task she perseveres and always smiles even when she is feeling challenged. She is an extremely polite girl who demonstrates excellent behaviour at all times. She has a very caring nature and is always willing to help others. She has developed excellent leadership skills and likes the opportunity to take on positions of responsibility. Well done Hannah. Page 35 Page 36 Tim Baillie, Canoe Slalom Lasting Legacy mosaic created by St Joseph’s Primary School students RIVERVIEW INFANT SCHOOL TOMMY Tommy is always kind and thoughtful towards others. He treats everyone with respect and is a good friend to all members of his class. He always tries his best in everything he does and demonstrates great determination to improve his skills in all areas of school life. Well done Tommy. GEMMA Gemma is an inspiration to pupils and staff alike. In her role as PE Co-ordinator she works tirelessly to ensure all pupils have an opportunity to engage in sporting activities within and outside the curriculum. Inspired by Take Pride’s KS1 Leo’s PALs programme; Gemma has created a bespoke programme for the school that enables every child to feel part of a team and to develop them as individuals and young leaders by living the PRIDE Values across the curriculum. Gemma’s creative and innovative approach to her role means that pupils have a fully enriched learning experience. Page 37 Page 38 Sam Ingram, Judo Lasting Legacy mosaic created by Riverview Junior School students RIVERVIEW JUNIOR SCHOOL Aimee decided that she wanted to organise a sponsored swim for herself and her friends. Saturday 20th July Aimee and friends headed to Cygnet leisure centre to swim as many lengths as possible in 90 minutes. Everyone did fantastically well and between the 13 participants they managed to swim a total of 825 lengths. Aimee’s original target was to raise £200 but with everyone's generous support Aimee has now raised over £1,500 and counting. Aimee wishes to give a huge thank you to all of the people that have made donations so far. Statement from Mrs Dymond: By the end of the Summer, Aimee had collected £1734.50 in donations - almost 900% growth of funds, something our national banks would have been proud of! AIMEE Aimee is 10 years old and earlier this year her Nanny Penny was diagnosed with breast cancer and has been receiving treatment from the cancer unit at Darent Valley Hospital. She has always done so much for others and for Aimee she wanted to do something for her. Her nan had told her that the hospital is trying to raise £76,000 to buy some new equipment for the cancer unit, which is not available through the NHS. Aimee planned, organised and advertised this project completely on her own while in Year 5. She prepared her information for the website, organised and printed sponsor forms for friends and family, managed to gain an interview with the fund-raising manager at Darent Valley Hospital and persuaded Cygnets to allow her friends and family free access for the Great Swim-In Evening, in a specially roped-off area, and what a great time that was. Aimee has never represented the school in sport but instead the school has discovered a junior entrepreneur with kindness in her heart and a determination and competitive spirit to equal that of any sportsman? How else could she have swam 91 lengths in 90 minutes?! Page 39 Page 40 Tom Daley, Diving Lasting Legacy mosaic created by St Botolph’s School students MAKSIM Maksim is our Tennis Superstar ! He has shown determination to be best he can be in his chosen sport and this is reflected in to his learning. ANITA Anita is always there for the children, families and staff and keeps the heart of our school alive! She has offered the children numerous sporting opportunities, as well as teaching them life-skills and always nurturing their self esteem. He shows great courage in his learning, he is never afraid to try and if it’s not right he is determined to find out why. Anita is an inspiring member of staff and is always able to impart her knowledge on all members of the school community. Throughout the changes our school has had over the years Anita has shown determination and courage to face the unknown and she has supported and led others in embracing change positively. He is an excellent role model in both learning and sport, a true team player. On behalf of everyone at Rosherville we would like to nominate Anita as she truly is an amazing person to have at our school. Page 41 Page 42 Jason Kenny, Cycling Lasting Legacy mosaic created by Rosherville Primary School students JAHMAINE Jahmaine has been a pleasure to teach thus far. He is being nominated for a Pride Award for demonstrating respect and friendship in and outside the classroom. Jahmaine has offered help to his friends and he actively participates and demonstrates volunteerism in helping the teacher and his classmates implement the daily roles and routines. KAITLIN Kaitlin has shown great compassion and has a heart of gold.. She takes great care to be kind and welcoming to new people. She helps adults and pupils alike. She respects people's opinions and enjoys people’s company. She has been a wonderful friend and companion to new arrivals at our school. She is always willing to help and takes pride in her learning. Page 43 Page 44 Friendship & Respect - Olympic & Paralympic Values SAINT GEORGE’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND SCHOOL Molly is an amazing young lady who has dedicated her time and effort to help raise awareness and money for the Stacy Mowle Charity. Stacy is 7 years old and a local Gravesend pupil. She was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma (cancer) at the age of 4. She has endured 18 months of very harsh medical treatment and by December 2011 was given the all clear. Unfortunately by the following Christmas the cancer had returned. Molly has been actively involved in trying to raise the £500,000 for experimental treatment abroad. Over the last year Molly has: MOLLY Sold/selling wristbands in school (year 9 and 10) Sat/sits with Stacy on weekends playing board games and drawing etc when Stacey is well enough. Molly has emailed companies requesting donations for raffles and promoting an auction for The Stacy Summertime Ball. Companies offered various prizes such as signed books and a holiday to Thailand. Raised awareness on twitter, including celebrities and businessman. Organised Stacey’s Ball (leaflets, tickets, raffle etc). Raised £50 through her tutor group, Yellow 2. Molly has done this all this whilst studying for her GCSEs! What an inspiration Molly is to us all. With Ella and Emma forming their sports crew, these four children have supported me throughout the year by setting up a play leading rota, carrying out their play leading duties and created a play leading display. Over four weeks they prepared an assembly which celebrated sporting talent in our school. They performed the assembly in front of the whole school via two assemblies. To prepare for the assembly they had to design questions, interview children and take pictures. They then had to create a PowerPoint assembly and present their findings. They also used this assembly to celebrate play leading in school and encourage more children to attempt the assembly. They have been great role models for the school and for sport. A year on and the playground has transformed to a place full of sporting and physical activities. She has helped organise and support the play leaders to implement many games from Four Square to rounders matches as well as zones whereby children can skip or work on multi skills. All the activities are well organised and she suggests new ones that could be implemented as well as resources needed. She also takes on board the children’s ideas and is committed to always trying to make the playground a happier place! Steve continues to be a committed and enthusiastic PE Co-ordinator working tirelessly to ensure pupils at Shears Green Junior have maximum opportunities to participate in extra curricular activities and clubs. As a result Steve has successfully applied and achieved the Bronze Kitemark Award for the Sainsbury’s School Games government initiative. It recognises the work that schools have done during the school year to promote the School Games and actively take part. Well done Steve! HANNAH Hannah has had a fantastic three years at Shorne School so far. She his keen to learn, always willing to help and has a wonderful caring nature. She perseveres and will ask for help before giving up. She has a fantastic attitude for her continuing learning at Shorne School. Katie came into school 3 days a week during this uncomfortable procedure and did not let it get her down. She remained a happy, cheerful and positive child throughout the time and was an inspiration to her fellow classmates in how to cope when facing adversity. GRACIE Gracie had a fantastic year last year in and out of the classroom. She made good progress in her reading and writing and her positive attitude was mirrored in her sporting prowess. She represented the school in the speed stacking festival and four square championship as well as taking part in her class football team and making the top swimming group in only her first year of swimming. She also won accolades at MEAPA gymnastics out of school and is always keen to take an active role in all activities. Always a smile on her face, Kara does not let her medical condition (Scoliosis), stand in her way of anything. Kara has recovered well from a spinal operation and spends much of her time taking part in outdoor activities. She is also involved in charity work outside of school. Inside of school, she is a happy and approachable student and she is willing to help anyone. Kara is also a Senior Students and contributes within Thamesview School. CHARLOTTE Charlotte is a very successful runner and runs for Kent. Her dedication for the sport is infectious and her ability to inspire others is equally as impressive. Recently Charlotte was awarded the role of Head Girl at Thamesview due to the impressive interview she had with our Head Teacher and some of our Governing body. However I have nominated Charlotte due to her running and dedication for the Sport. I recently watched Charlotte run the ‘Cancer Research, Race for Life’ where she ran an impressive 10K race in under 40 minutes. Page 55 Page 56 Determination & Courage - Olympic & Paralympic Values THAMESVIEW SCHOOL ASHLEY Ashley is a physically disabled student. Ashley contracted meningitis when he was a young child. This resulted in him having his lower limbs amputated as well as losing some function to his upper arms. Ashley also suffers from some mild leaning difficulties. This disability has clearly not inhibited Ashley at all. He has attended a mainstream secondary school where he has been fully included. He is a well liked pupil and very popular with staff and his peers. At break and lunch you will find Ashley outside on the basketball court playing with students of all abilities and ages. Ashley does not see himself has being disabled. His disability does not hold him back, he will attempt and get involved in all activities. Ashley is an inspiration to the rest of the school, that no matter what life dishes out to you go off and make a success of your life. BEN Ben is a Senior Student and Chair for Student Council. He is a willing student with lots of ideas and shows excellent initiative to encourage others to join in to Community and School life. Ben has been part of the committee planning a Last Choir Standing event to be held at The Old Town Hall to raise money for Children in Need. He shows confidence and is an excellent role model for other students. Ben has also volunteered to help at Monica’s Vintage Fairs, he has already worked a Saturday at the Woodville Halls and will be attending another one in September at the Dockyard. Ben has participated in interviews for teacher vacancies within the school and has always received excellent feedback for his mature approach and clear informative response allowing students to have a voice within the interview procedure. Page 57 Page 58 Equality - Olympic & Paralympic Values THAMESVIEW SCHOOL LEVI Levi is a 13 year old boy who has attended Thamesview since Year 7. He was diagnosed with a Carcinoma of the spine and brain and due to this diagnosis was suffering from seizures. Levi was unable to attend school for some of Year 7 but during Year 8 although on Chemotherapy treatment he did begin to attend 1 lesson a day 3 times a week for his Math’s and PE lesson. Levi is an active young man always smiling and never complaining. He has been determined this year to be in school full-time so he is on a reduced timetable for 3 days a week attending all lessons. He has a lot of friends and always joins in with activities despite his condition. Levi is a credit to himself, the school and his family! And a true inspiration to others. FRASER Fraser is Deputy Chair for Student council he is a willing student with lots of ideas and works well with others on the student’s council. Fraser has been part of the committee planning a Last Choir Standing event to be held at The Old Town Hall to raise money for Children in Need. He shows confidence and is an excellent role model for other students Page 59 Page 60 Lanre picking up his award from GB Women’s Laurie Williams THAMESVIEW SCHOOL Lanre’s nomination is due to his excellence in SportWheelchair Basketball in which he plays with Team GB and the London Titans. This requires Lanre to attend regular training sessions across the country, including competing in London School Games. He was part of the winning team resulting in Adidas sponsorship. He has attended the GB training camp at Stoke Mandeville which included him learning how to manage his disability, which in spite of being in a wheelchair his determination has allowed him to compete at a high level. LANRE This has resulted in Lanre being an inspirational and well-respected figure at Thamesview, most recently being appointed head boy after a rigorous application and interview process. Both girls had truly undertaken their role with such passion and enthusiasm. They were committed to supporting their peers and showed a great responsibility in helping others who may not have been as good as themselves to achieve and fulfill a personal goal. They volunteered to support the younger children in after school clubs and helped plan and support myself in Sports Day . Her dedication to training school teams in various sports led to their success in High 5 Netball and TAG Rugby at the West Kent Hub Games Finals this year. She has introduced new sports to the school, invited coaches in to enhance their provision further and has adopted the ‘sport for all’ ethos, giving different opportunities to all those who wish to take part. LORRAINE Lorraine has always shown a keen interest in developing her skills and subject knowledge and this has led to her being an excellent subject leader and role model to the staff and pupils at Westcourt Primary School. Page 65 SAINSBURY’S WEST KENT GAMES FINALS 2013 TEAM FINALISTS GOLD MEDAL WINNERS ELLA Year 1& 2 KEY STEPS GYMNASTICS Ella and her team mates competed in the Gravesham School Games qualifiers winning Gold overall. The team went on to represent Gravesham in the West Kent Hub Games Finals. At the finals the team faced tough competition but tried hard and performed extremely well. The results were not available on the day so the team left knowing only one thing which was everyone had enjoyed the competition. When the results came through St Joseph's team had been awarded the Silver medal overall and Ella had won individual Gold for the best all round score! Ella is a delightful young lady who always tries her best in PE lessons - she is a joy to teach! She practiced her floor routine over and over to ensure she got it right, and it was this determination and confidence that allowed her to achieve this success! Well done Ella! At the age of 9 I sat on the floor watching the Seoul Olympics, South Korea and thought wow that would be amazing to be an Olympic Swimmer. It was so far off but that was the first start of my intrigue in the Olympics. It was then a matter of dedication and hard work to achieve that goal. The Here and Now: After competing for Great Britain for nearly 10 years Chris hung up the trunks in 2009 and retired from international swimming. After a career which saw him rise to being Double Commonwealth Champion, British Record holder, Commonwealth Record holder, World Medalist, European Medalist & Olympic Finalist Chris now uses his experience and knowledge to help others to achieve their goals and dreams! Chris uses his unique story to inspire people of all ages and disciplines to follow their dreams and ambitions, believing he has the success tools to help anyone, yes anyone to achieve their dreams." Chris has created a wonderful school pilot programme ‘INSPIRE to Achieve & Celebrate’ which aims to inspire young people to achieve their personal goals, to celebrate their achievements and to make a positive contribution to their school and community. The programme focuses on five main areas Dreams & Goals, Aims & Aspirations, Comfort Zones, Mind Body & Emotion, Coaching & Mentoring and Role Models. Pupils involved in the programme will explore these five main areas over the coming year and undertake and amazing journey of self discovery. Formerly known as The Gravesham School Sports Partnership we officially formed as a Community Interest Company trading under the name of 'Take Pride‘ two years ago. The new company was set up as a result of the Government's decision to withdraw all funding for school sport resulting in the collapse of many school sports partnerships across the country. Take Pride continues to benefit children, young people, local communities and teachers with a unique programme that recognises and supports the increased demands on teachers time giving them the tools, ideas and resources to deliver high quality physical education across all National Curriculum activity areas.
