Summer Programs ◆ BCA Study Abroad
Local to Global: Connecting to Ideas that Matter
Since 1962, BCA Study Abroad has
been committed to helping students
understand the complexities of the
contemporary world by providing
challenging academic programs and
cross-cultural learning in locations
around the globe.
From this start, BCA focused its educational mission on engaging students
with ideas that matter.
As educators, we are convinced that
no genuine understanding of global
issues can be gained without a strong
intellectual grounding in the histories,
societies and cultures of the region in
which our students pursue their studies. Furthermore, we believe that
student learning depends heavily on
meaningful direct contact with local
people whose lives are entwined with
and affected by the issues we aim to
understand.
By design, a significant component of
BCA’s study abroad programs, both
through traditional classroom education and in-field learning, is grasping the historical, social and cultural
context of the big questions of the
human condition.
Through this model, BCA strives to
convey a more comprehensive and
precise understanding of the world
to the students who participate in
our programs.

Arabic Language & Human Rights in Morocco
DATES OF STUDY: 4 weeks; late May to late June
Learn Arabic in Morocco at the Dar
Loughat Cross-Cultural Language
Center, which offers intensive Arabic
courses at a variety of levels.
Student Learning
Language courses are taught by enthusiastic, multilingual, qualified and experienced teachers, exclusively
dedicated to teaching Arabic to non-native speakers.
All classes are taught in Arabic, except for complete
beginners, where use of the student’s mother tongue is
kept to a minimum.
Beginning language students will take 80 hours of
language instruction over four weeks for six U.S. credits. Dar Loughat also offers Arabic language classes at
multiple levels for more advanced language students.
In addition to learning Arabic, you will also take a
two-credit Moroccan culture course Human Rights
in Islam, that emphasizes an Islamic perspective on
human rights. Included in this course are three or more
hours of cultural activities each week, as well as some
volunteer experiences.
Dar Loughat Cross-Cultural Language
Center
This small language school enrolls students from all
over the world and employs faculty with extensive
experience teaching Arabic to foreign students. The
school is fully equipped with the latest audio-visual
material, modern language labs, wireless internet connection and a small library that contains a considerable number of books on a variety of topics. Students
benefit from small-sized classes of between three and
eight students (maximum) and a wide range of excursions and social and cultural activities, allowing them
to get the most out of their international experience.
Living in Tetouan
The city of Tetouan, declared a World Cultural Heritage
Site, is less than 60 kilometers from Algeciras in Spain to
the north and 60 kilometers east of Tangier. Its small
size allows students to easily become integrated into the
local culture, famous for its legendary generosity and
tolerance.
Homestay
While studying Arabic in Tetouan, students will be
housed with host families close to the Language Center,
enabling them to experience Moroccan culture and
establish life-long friendships. In addition, students
will enjoy the city’s excellent beaches, which are
undoubtedly among the most beautiful in the entire
Mediterranean area, and its evergreen Rif Mountains
that spread eastward along a distance of more than 500
kilometers.
Through various immersion and language exchange
activities, Dar Loughat provides daily contact with
Moroccan life, allowing students to expand their vocabulary, improve their spoken language performance
and better understand the local culture.
EDUCATIONAL EXCURSIONS
One of the benefits of studying abroad with BCA
is the excursions offered throughout your stay that
are included in the program fee. During their time
in Tetouan, students go on educational excursions to exotic locations such as Tangiers and
Chefchaouen, a traditional village famous for its
blue walls and old-world atmosphere.
