First Saturday Market Day
The first Saturday of every month the City of Bellville has its monthly Market
Day, which is made possible by the Bellville Chamber of Commerce. Vendors
set up their wares around the historic courthouse square. A great assortment of
booths! Lots of arts, crafts, collectibles, jewelry and antiques. Great food and
live entertainment in the relaxing atmosphere of small-town Texas!

Small Town Christmas
Small Town Christmas is a longstanding tradition in the Bellville community.
It’s a excellent opportunity to make new memories and share the Christmas
spirit with family, friends and loved ones. Start your holidays off right with a
visit to the mini park, just north of the town square, where local businesses and
organizations decorate the grand old trees to perfection! Activities include gingerbread house decorating and contest, children’s pageants and baking contest.

CULTURAL DATA
Experience the old world charm of Newman’s Castle, a one-of-a-kind custom
creation hidden just outside of town in the Bellville countryside. The castle features its own moat (watch out for gators!), massive working drawbridge, a 3000
lb. iron gate, a chapel, five 24 ft. tall corner turrets, a courtyard, and a central
tower with a dramatic view of the surrounding lands. An 18 ft. wall encompasses the castle, ensuring you are safe from oncoming marauders during your visit.
Bellville’s Blacksmith Shop
Bellville is also home to a working blacksmith shop called Phenix. Ran by
Cowboy Szymanski, he offers a variety of items from his shop. Handcrafted
knives are available for hunting, cooking, tactical usage and fantasy. Along
with producing quality knives, Cowboy Szymanski has other works including:
business card holder, texas clock, wine rack and many others.

Establishment and Growth of Bellville
Bellville is named after Thomas and James Bell who immigrated from Florida
in 1822 and settled in Bellville as some of Stephen F. Austin’s earliest Texas
colonists. They offered to donate 145 acres to Austin County for the creation of
Bellville, the newly proposed county seat. The deal was accepted and platted
in 1846 by district surveyor Mr. D. Charles Amthor to center around the Courthouse and town square.
Churches, a log cabin, and a wooden courthouse were the first public structures
in Bellville. Most of the early residents were farmers, and the town grew slowly
until the arrival of the railroad in 1880. The railroad created a market outlet for
cotton and other agricultural products, as well as providing transportation to
Houston, Galveston, and other major destinations. This brought a rapid increase
in population and business development. Within three years, the population of
Bellville rose from approximately 300 to an astounding 1,000 residents.

Post Oak Savannah Eco-region:
The original plant community associated with this region was
a savannah dominated by native bunch grasses and forbs with
scattered clumps of trees, primarily post oaks. Forested areas
were generally restricted to bottomlands along major rivers and
creeks, or in areas protected from fire.
This is essential to choose proper plant materials for a site.
These plant materials tend to be lower maintenance, often requiring less water and reducing the amount of chemicals needed
to keep the plant healthy.

The use of these materials creates native ecosystems providing a
habitat for local wildlife.

(33b)
The Southern Post Oak Savannah Eco-region
Site location: Bellville City
33b
The eco-region has more woods and forest than the adjacent prairie eco-regions (32 and 34),
and consists of mostly hardwoods compared to the pines to the east in Eco-region 35. Historically a post oak savanna, current land cover is a mix of post oak woods, improved pasture, and rangeland, with some invasive mesquite to the south.
A thick understory of Yaupon and Eastern Red Cedar occurs in some parts. Many areas of
this region have more dissected and irregular topography than Eco-region 33a to the north.
The soils generally have an ustic soil moisture regime compared to udic in Eco-region 33a,
and more sand and sandy loam surface textures. It is underlain by Miocene, Oligocene, Eocene, and Paleocene sediments.

Sand exposures within these Tertiary deposits have a distinctive sandyland flora, and in a
few areas unique bogs occur.
