The event took place on Monday, September 24, 2012 at 7 p.m. at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN. The evening was presented by City National Bank. Dierks’ Bentley made his debut for hosting the event and this was the third time the ceremony will be held at the Ryman Auditorium. Country music has so many talented artists, songwriters and people working behind the scenes. And at the event, they gave awards to these people because without them the show wouldn’t go on. The Academy of Country Music Special Awards are voted on by the ACM Board of Directors and are awarded during years that the Board of Directors feels there are clear and deserving candidates. This year Gayle Holcomb was presented with the Mae Boren Axton Award, which is given in recognition of years of dedication and service by an outstanding individual to the Academy of Country Music. Holcomb, a country music leader at William Morris Endeavor Entertainment, has served as an Academy of Country Music board member for 17 years and five years as ACM chairman. During her tenure as chair, Holcomb was a driving force for the organization’s rapid change and growth, including moving the Awards show from Los Angeles to Las Vegas in 2003. She helped launch AMC Lifting Lives in 2005, guiding the vision for the charity as it got under way initially, and continuing her support of the organization by becoming chairman. She made the initial endowment to form the ACM Lifting Lives Diane Holcomb Emergency Relief Fund, in honor of her mother, to enable the fund to respond quickly to unforeseen, immediate financial needs of ACM members, staff and members of the country music community. The SCOOP congratulates Gayle Holcomb on this amazing accomplishment. Not only is Gayle a winner in the show ring, but in the Country Music Industry as well. Elijah Steven Bryant was born on September 22, 2012, at the CMC Medical Center in Lincoln, NC. He was born at 3:22 pm and weighed 8 pounds and was 20 inches long. To date it has gained the support of 22 other legislators. In summary it seeks to: 1. Eliminate the use of a weighted shoe, pad, wedge, hoof band, or other device or material at a horse show, horse exhibition, or horse sale or auction. 2. Eliminate the use of an action device on any limb of a Tennessee Walking, a Racking, or a Spotted Saddle horse at a horse show, horse exhibition, or horse sale or auction. There are several other amendments within this proposition that would negatively impact every discipline of the Tennessee Walking Show Horse. (AP) — A Tennessee walking horse trainer who was caught abusing horses in an undercover video was sentenced Tuesday to three years’ probation and fined $75,000. Jackie McConnell, 60, told U.S. District Judge Harry “Sandy” Mattice, “I take responsibility for what I’ve done.” The video made public this summer by the Humane Society of the United States showed McConnell and others applying caustic substances to horses’ legs and hooves and beating the horses to make them stand. The process is called soring and is used to enhance the horses’ high-stepping gait. The Chattanooga Times Free Press reported (http://bit.ly/ODdD5u) that McConnell cried as he read his statement but showed no reaction to the sentence. Stable hands Jeff Dockery and Joseph Abernathy were sentenced to one year on probation and ordered to write an article about soring. The SCWHA awards two scholarships annually. This year due to donations made in the memory of Mrs. Mary Hinson to the scholarship fund each recipient will receive a scholarship of $1050.00. The recipients this year are Victoria Taylor Bradley and Nelson Butler Gibbons. Taylor Bradley is the daughter of Kenneth and Carolyn Nations of Easley, SC. She will be a rising senior this year at Clemson University in Clemson. Taylor became associated with Tennessee Walking Page 44 / The Scoop Horses in 2005. She has assisted at several shows throughout the state. She says that her heart has been touched by the generosity of the members of the state and local walking horse associations for the various charities to which they give. These donations have affected her especially because her nephew was born with cancer. Taylor is involved with several organizations at Clemson where she is studying genetics. She hope to further her education in the Graduate Genetic Program at Clemson after her undergraduate graduation in May, 2013. Nelson Gibbons is the son of Al and Marie Gibbons of New Zion, SC. He is a graduate of Manning High School and looks forward to attending Francis Marion University this fall. Nelson has always been fascinated with horses and took his first riding lessons at the Alcolu Equestrian Center. His first Tennessee walking horse was a 16 year old mare named Beam’s Sonic Spirit that his parents purchased for him from Stan Tindal Stables. He later changed her name to Cocoa. Nelson went to work for Stan at his stables. This is when he began his show career, showing in the juvenile classes. Nelson feels that working with and riding Tennessee walking horses has taught him good sportsmanship, patience, confidence, perseverance, and a positive attitude toward life. He is sure these traits will serve him well as he pursues his future endeavors. The South Carolina Walking Horse Association wishes both of these recipients much success in their educations and their careers. In addition, the implementation of historic safety reforms contributed to the overall success of the event by improving the compliance rate with the Horse Protection Act. The overall impact of this year’s event has left the industry with a sense of optimism for the future that was echoed by Commissioner of Agriculture Julius Johnson. “We observed among Walking Horse leaders a renewed resolve to reform the industry and protect all horses,” said Johnson. “This resolve brightened this year’s Celebration and poised the breed for a strong future of the Tennessee Walking Horse Industry. The Tennessee Department of Agriculture supports the strengthened reform efforts.” Despite the continued economic downturn and negative publicity centered on a few bad trainers, the overall attendance number of 165,000 was better than expected and the weekend attendance increased 7% over last year. While attendance numbers are not at the levels they once were, attendance levels this year show an Industry beginning to bounce back. Additionally, there was an increase in horse entries after the pre-entry period bringing the total entries in line with previous years. In 2012 there were 2080 entries and in 2011, 2198 entries. “Without a doubt the 74th National Celebration was considered a success among our sponsors, exhibitors and the community. People are more encouraged now than they have been in years. The reforms being implemented are having a positive impact. The horses are safer and the appreciation for the natural athleticism of the magnificent Tennessee Walking Horse is growing,” said Dr. Doyle Meadows, Celebration CEO. The Celebration Board of Directors implemented historic reforms and enhanced safety measures aimed at ensuring the safety of the horse at the 2012 Celebration. Of the 2,293 inspections, SHOW HIO found 43 sensitivity/scar violations and another 13 technical violations that are unrelated to a horse being deemed sore. The horse safety measures were successful in garnering a 98.1% compliance rate with the Horse Protection Act, significantly better than the 93.6% achieved last year. The higher compliance rate is an indication that horse safety reforms are working as anyone who sores a horse knows not to show up at The Celebration. At this year’s Celebration those suspected of wrongdoing were stopped in the inspection process, or through the swabbing initiative, and punishments were issued swiftly. “I commend those in the industry committed to reform and punishing horse abusers. We have implemented the most aggressive safety reforms in the business and we are imposing serious punishments for those who break the rules,” said Stephen Mullins, President SHOW HIO. “We are making real progress and we will not stop until we rid the sport of all the bad apples that cheat and harm horses.” This year’s Celebration had the most stringent inspection process in The Celebration’s history. For the first time ever, every horse was swabbed by the industry, positive results were made public during the event, and violators were punished severely by suspending trainers’ licenses, disqualifying horses, and removing ribbons, trophies and prize monies. The immediate and harsh punishments imposed by the industry are another example of how serious the industry is about reform that will rid the sport of anyone who abuses horses. The Scoop / Page 45 NEWS The Scoop For The Walking Horse Industry TWSHO RESPONSE TO PROPOSED HORSE PROTECTION ACT AMENDMENT SHELBYVILLE, TN - TWSHO issued the following statement from spokesperson Jennifer Baker in response to the amendments proposed last week by Members of Congress from Kentucky: “The primary goal of TWSHO is to implement reforms that will rid the industry of soring trainers for good. Not only do we support components of what the members of congress from Kentucky proposed, the reformers in the industry are already doing it, with the strictest inspections and harshest penalties in the business. And we are actually enforcing the penalties. The USDA has punished 52 trainers in the last 42 years. In the last three years alone, SHOW HIO suspended 152 trainers for an entire year. We do have a problem however with legislation that will eliminate inspectors, be they from the industry or the USDA. The elimination of HIO inspectors and a system that allows for horse shows to voluntarily request inspectors would do more harm than good by allowing for abusive trainers to go undetected and unpunished. Horses are safest when the industry and the USDA work in partnership to ensure that horses are safe and that only sound and HPA compliant horses are participating in horse shows.” Background The following are detailed responses to proposed changes to the Horse Protection Act of 1970. 1. “Put the Agriculture Department in charge of licensing inspectors and have it assigned an inspector to any show that requests one.” Certification: • This is already done. Each Horse Industry Organization (HIO) is certified by the USDA. Each HIO is required to submit a handbook to the USDA that details their inspection process, rules, and how they properly administer HPA guidelines. The USDA approves the handbook every year and is a requirement for recertification. • DQPs are trained by USDA-certified HIO personnel. The training is attended and observed by the USDA. USDA personnel are part of the training process. The initial training is 16 hours. • DQPs are required to take continuing education/training classes each year to be recertified. A minimum of four hours is required. The required training sessions for recertification are attended by and observed by USDA personnel. The USDA teaches at the required training sessions. • Current guidelines: http://cfr.vlex.com/vid/11-designatedqualified-persons-dqp-19610384 Inspectors assigned by USDA: • Currently, reputable horse shows partner with an HIO. The HIO inspectors who are certified by USDA certified instructors and are trained by the USDA are responsible for the inspections at the horse show and they inspect every horse participating. • Under the proposed change, horse shows would voluntarily request inspectors from the USDA. There is no requirement to do so. If they don’t request inspectors to be assigned then there will be no inspections at said horse show unless the USDA makes a surprise visit. The USDA does not have the capability to monitor all horse shows. Page 46 / The Scoop • The result is that fewer horses will be inspected and there is less enforcement of the HPA. 2. “Increases the number of inspectors the agency can use for surprise inspections at shows that don’t request a licensed inspector. Funding for the increase in inspectors would come from giving the department a share of the entrance fees that horse owners pay at shows.” • If there are no more HIOs and the horse shows are not required to request that the USDA assign inspectors the result will be that the horse shows don’t request inspectors and no inspections take place. The USDA does not have the capacity to hire an adequate number of inspectors to replace all the HIO inspectors let alone do more of the inspections they currently do. When the USDA attends a horse show they do not inspect every horse, they only inspect a few and the HIO present at the horse show is inspecting every horse. The USDA then picks a few to inspect in addition to the HIO inspection. 3. “Outlaw the use of ‘action devices’ that rub on sore areas of a horse to increase pain”. • There is no scientific or other evidence, that the action devices or the pads hurt the horse. • A study by Dr. Ram C. Purohit, Associate Professor Department of Large Animal Surgery and Medicine School of Veterinary Medicine Auburn University, AL, showed that action devices do not hurt horses. • There is no doubt that soring hurts horses. The way to end soring is to look for it, blood test, swab for masking and caustic agents, you name it, then hold those accountable and ban anyone who continues to sore horses from the business 4. Increase penalties for soring, with fines of up to $5,000 or imprisonment for up to three years or both. • The fact is that the USDA does not consistently punish violators of the HPA and because they have failed to do so there has been no real deterrent for soring trainers. Since the HPA became law over 40 years ago there have been 52 cases prosecuted by the government. Many of these were from violations that occurred at shows where the USDA was not even present. The only thing that routinely happens when a USDA inspector finds a horse in violation is that the horse is disqualified from that specific show. • Rarely does any violation result in any penalty by the USDA. The industry is already issuing the proposed violations. SHOW HIO did so at this year’s Celebration. In fact, the only penalties issued for violations at the Celebration were issued by the Industry. • Less than a month has elapsed since the 2012 Celebration and already the Industry has issued stiff and meaningful punishments. WHTA has issued two suspensions for swabs that have tested positive for a violation on two trainers. USDA still has not issued a single penalty for the swab results they received from the 2011 Celebration. o In addition to the suspension handed down by the WHTA on the two trainers for their swab results, The Celebration stripped them of their ribbons, prize money and trophy. o The Celebration also banned a trainer from participating in any Celebration event for two years. SHOW HIO also imposed an additional five year minimum suspension and $5,000 fine on that trainer. This is the $5,000 minimum penalty being proposed by the government. The industry is already doing it. NEWS The Scoop For The Walking Horse Industry TWSHO STaTEmENT ON SENTENcINg OF JackIE mccONNEll INduSTry cOmmITTEd TO rEFOrm aNd rIddINg SpOrT OF abuSIvE TraINErS SHELBYVILLE, TN – The Tennessee Walking Show Horse Organization today reaffirmed their commitment to reform and the elimination of soring trainers in the walking horse industry in response to the sentencing of Jackie McConnell. “Those who abuse horses should be held accountable and we hope that today’s sentencing sends a message to those who hurt horses that this type of activity will not be tolerated,” said TWSHO spokesman Jane Lynch Crain. “The vast majority of people in the walking horse industry are involved in the sport because they love the walking horse and it is unfortunate that a few soring trainers have tarnished the reputation of the industry and the deeds of those involved. To rid the Industry of soring trainers TWSHO has been working to implement unprecedented horse safety reforms that include stricter inspections and harsher penalties. Industry reform efforts have resulted in a higher rate of compliance with the Horse Protection Act. Our goal is to ensure that all horses are healthy and sound and we are eager to work in partnership with all parties interested in putting horse safety first.” The reforms being implemented by the Industry are having a real impact on ridding the sport of soring trainers and protecting the wellbeing of horses. This year’s Celebration had the most stringent inspection process in the history of the sport. For the first time ever swabbing results were expedited and made public during the event and violations were punished severely by suspending trainers’ licenses, disqualifying horses, removing ribbons, trophies and prize monies. TWSHO aNNOuNcES SEvENTH rOuNd aNd FINal rOuNd OF ExpEdITEd SWabbINg rESulTS FrOm THE 74TH aNNual cElEbraTION Shelbyville, TN – Today the Tennessee Walking Show Horse Organization (TWSHO) has learned from the Walking Horse Trainer’s Association (WHTA) the results of The Celebration’s seventh and final round of expedited swabbing results. According to Don Gandy, Commissioner for the WHTA Enforcement LLC, one swab from August 29th failed the WHTA swabbing initiative. As a result, the WHTA has suspended trainer Scott Beaty’s license for two weeks and The Celebration will remove Beaty’s ribbon, prize money and trophy as well as retie the class. In August, The Celebration announced it would be implementing historic reforms by enhancing the science based testing recently implemented by the Walking Horse Trainers’ Association (WHTA’s) Enforcement Initiative and strengthening the stringent testing methods currently employed at the event. The WHTA Enforcement Initiative swabbing program is an objective, science-based inspection initiative to swab the pasterns of horses in competition in order to detect substances that harm the horse or mask substances that could have harmed the horse. Celebration is taking the initiative one step further by swabbing every horse participating in the Celebration and funding a program that expedites swabs so that the results will be available during the event – this is a first in the history of the Industry. The swabbing results will then be made public and those found in violation will be punished in accordance with the Trainers’ Initiative. This is also the first time that classes will be retied accordingly removing ribbons, trophies and prize monies. A trainer found in violation will have their license suspended in line with WHTA initiative protocol and the horse will be disqualified TWSHO rESpONdS TO mOrE mISguIdEd aTTackS FrOm WalkINg HOrSE OppONENTS SHELBYVILLE, TN - Tennessee Walking Show Horse Organization (TWSHO) today issued the following statement form communications director Jeffrey Howard in response to proposed legislation to amend the Horse Protection Act (HPA): “TWSHO is in strong agreement that reform is needed in the industry and we will work with anyone who truly wants reform. “The attacks from Congressman Whitfield are expected as his wife is the Vice President of Legislative Affairs for the Humane Society of the Unites States, an organization that stands to gain financially for going after the walking horse industry. “It is shameful that elected officials would attack an industry that means so much to small communities across the country, all for political gain. Have they ever talked to anyone who rides a walking horse, to anyone who lives in the communities to which this animal and the sport means something? It is even more shameful that they would use the words of a convicted felon, someone with an axe to grind with the very inspectors - the inspectors at The Celebration - who ousted him from the business for his deplorable and inexplicable acts. “HSUS continues to attack the entire industry for the bad actions of a few, which is the political thing to do. But if they were interested in reform, they would attack the bad actors and support the reforms that are working to rid the system of soring trainers. They don’t care about the people whose lives they affect on their path to tear down an industry to promote their own organization. “The SHOW HIO has the toughest inspections and harshest penalties in the business, even stricter than the USDA. If the HSUS cared about walking horses as much as SHOW HIO does, they would not have watched and supported the animal abuse they witnessed for 11 months, all so they could create a video to generate more press attention and raise more money.” The Scoop / Page 47 Page 48 / The Scoop The Scoop / Page 49 Beyond The Ring Three generations of girls doing what they love….HORSES! Jerri Anne Williams wins with Firey Fortune at the NC State Fair horse show in the Amateur 2 Year Old Amteur class. Ginger and Taylor congratulate her after the win Ginger Williams grew up and still resides in Reidsville, NC. She attended North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine where she received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. Ginger is a veterinarian and owns and runs her business in Eden, NC. Her small animal clinic is called Central Animal Hospital. Ginger has one daughter, Jerri Anne Williams. She is involved in horses as well. Ginger said quickly she did finance Jerri Anne’s interest in horses, but didn’t teach her how to ride. Ginger has always admired the breed. Her first horse was her trail horse name Roger. She got him when she was 20 years old. She developed an interest in showing through Jerri Anne’s passion for the sport. Her first show horse was purchased 8 years ago and his name was Doc Patton. Ginger’s first show was at the Chatham Virginia horse show and she said she remembers the ride and it was truly a thrill. Ginger, Jerri Anne and her granddaughter, Taylor, are all now hooked! Ginger said that she is a work in progress to this day in the riding department and her biggest influence in the show ring is her daughter. Jerri Anne Williams Ginger’s favorite part of showing is watching her colts progress into show horses. And, the feeling of knowing that she had a good ride. The very best part of going to the horse shows is she gets to spend time with her daughter and granddaughter, doing something they all love. The show that Ginger looks forward to the most is the North Carolina Championship Horse Show. Her reasoning is the horses are top notch and the show is always a class act! Some of the best advice that Ginger has ever received in or out of the show ring was to BREATHE. Ginger’s favorite win was from the North Carolina Championship horse show when she won the Ladies Auxiliary Plantation Class aboard Battle’s Top Gun. Her proudest moment in the show ring came when she won her first blue ribbon on a performance horse at Baileyton, Tennessee aboard Jazz’s Royalty. Page 50 / The Scoop Ginger and Taylor at the 2012 Java Virginia horse show Beyond The Ring Ginger Williams Today, Ginger has taken her love for animals and the addiction she caught from her daughter for showing Tennessee Walking horses and has a great show ring line up. She currently owns three performance horses that are in training at Derek Monahan Stables in Ivanhoe, Virginia. Those entries include I’m Dreaming, Cat Daddy Ritz, Cyclone At The Ritz and, also Jazz’s Royalty. She has another love as well which is Spotted Saddle Horses. Ginger has two horses in training at Dickie Gardner Stables in Shelbyville, Tennessee. They are Battle’s Top Gun and Tapout. Ginger has several other works in progress, horses as she calls them, along with a pasture full of ex-show horses that are in their next careers as broodmares. Ginger showed at the National Spotted Saddle Horse show that was held the second week in September and she added a title to her resume’. She won the Amateur Three Year Old World Championship title in the Trail Pleasure division aboard Tapout. Later in the week, this same horse went on to win the Amateur Three Year Old Trail Pleasure World Grand Championship with Phil Dunivan in the irons and the Open Three Year Old Trail Pleasure division with trainer, Dickie Gardner, up. Ginger has a good problem I told her, “she just has too many good horses”. Ginger missed winning her set of roses because she had to leave the spotted show to show her performance horses in East Tennessee. WGC Fully Armed making a victory lap at the North Carolina Championship Show with Jerri Anne Williams When asked what’s next for you in the Walking Horse Industry Ginger replied, “I look forward to watching my next set of yearlings progress, and watching my granddaughter, Taylor, pursue her love for showing on her mare, She’s Hot Gossip”. Ginger’s only other hobby is spending time with her granddaughter Taylor, because horses pretty much occupy her free time. She did say when she isn’t at a show, she likes to sneak away to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for some vacation time. Her daughter, Jerri Anne Williams, not only is following in her mother’s footsteps and loves horses, but has past her passion on to her daughter, Taylor. Jerri Anne gives her mother, and her grandfather credit for getting her interested in the Tennessee Walking Horse Industry. Jerri Anne with her daughter, Taylor Jerri Anne grew up in Stoneville, NC and currently lives nearby in Madison, NC. She attended Patrick Henry Community College, where she received an Associate Degree in Science. She is currently attending San Juan College perusing her degree in Veterinary Technology. Her occupation is a Veterinary Technician/Office Manager at her mother’s animal clinic. Taylor is Jerri Anne’s five year old daughter. She is an avid “horse girl” herself, says Jerri Anne with a laugh. She enjoys lead line and trail riding. Jerri Anne taught her how to ride on her little gray mare, She’s Hot Gossip. Taylor is one of Lined With Cash’s biggest fans! When Jerri Anne was learning to ride, her grandfather and her mother purchased a pony named Rachael for her. Jerri Annes gives credit to Rachel for teaching her how to ride. She can remember Ginger Williams making a victory pass at the Gulf Coast Charity Horse Show aboard Battle’s Top Gun The Scoop / Page 51 Beyond The Ring Ginger Williams Jerri Anne with her newest mount, Triple Crown Ritz Scream Walking and Jerri Anne Williams celebrating winning the roses Jerri Anne and Ginger Williams smile for the camera at one of the horse shows. Cat Daddy Ritz, one of Ginger Williams contenders making a blue ribbon show with trainer, Derek Monahan Page 52 / The Scoop her first show when asked what the experience was like she was quick to say, “I remember it like it was yesterday and it was very exciting, but I was very nervous as well”. She had many pleasure horses prior to her first performance horse, which came at age 14. Her first performance horse was Powered By Jubilee. He was a black walking pony. Since that first performance horse, Jerri Anne has shown and won many times on many great horses that her mother has purchased for her. Jerri Anne’s favorite win of all time was on World Grand Champion, Fully Armed, at the North Carolina Championship Horse Show in Asheville, North Carolina. This team won the Park Pleasure Stake class. This horse was purchased by Ginger at the Celebration from the Dixon Family. This horse had been a multi world champion and World Grand Champion under the direction of Southern Serenity Ranch. Jerri Anne certainly can’t pinpoint her proudest moments in the show ring, but has wins on Scream Walking, WGC Fully Armed, and WC Movie Extra that she is very proud of. When she was asked what do you like most about showing horses her reply was, “I love everything about showing horses; it’s an addiction for me”. Jerri Anne gives her family and friends the award for being her biggest influence in the show ring. She can’t narrow it down to one person, but it was a group effort of support that has made her the rider she is today along with her mother’s finances. Jerri Anne did say she had many mishaps in her riding career. But if you ride long enough, you will have them. She believes they do make you stronger. The best advice she has ever received in or out of the show ring was “don’t fall off”. Jerri Anne’s newest mount is Triple Crown Ritz. He is currently in training with the Baucom Stables in Monroe, NC. She also has her Amateur Owned and Trained Trail Pleasure horse World Champion Jazzalicious. Jerri Anne is very busy, but was able to get away and make her vacation at the 2012 Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration where she could only say raving reviews for Champions at this year’s show. Her three favorite entries were Honors, Walk Time Charlie and Strong Need For Cash. Her favorite World Grand Beyond The Ring Ginger Williams hChampion of all time is He’s Putting On The Ritz her mother Ginger also agrees with her on this vote. Another thing that Ginger and Jerri Anne agree on is the show they both most look forward to is the North Carolina Championship Horse Show in Asheville, NC. Jerri Anne’s reasoning behind it is because that has been the location of some of her most memorable rides. When Jerri Anne isn’t at a show, working, schooling or doing her motherly duties she loves to get away and take vacations. She has traveled many places and has actually included horses in some of her stays. She horseback rode in Dubois, WY, Belize and Myrtle Beach, SC. She also loves her second hobby and actually works perfect with her love for horses and vacationing. Photography is something she loves to do on her spare time! Jerri Anne says she will always be involved in the walking horse industry, no matter what, whether it is showing performance horses or versatility competitions. Her addiction for horses is something you can never take away. This passion to the Tennessee Walking Horse breed and especially the showing end of it was so strong that it influenced her mother to take a part of it. And has been passed on to her daughter too. The Williams are not only a name to be recognized in the Carolina’s, but over the years their show string has become second to none. Accumulating major titles and World Championship standings. You will for sure see this family at the shows competing and watching their contenders. Three Generations of Girls doing what they love….Horses! Last week, Bloomberg Markets magazine published an excellent exposé on yet another HSUS telemarketer: Ohio-based InfoCision Management Corporation. InfoCision runs campaigns on behalf of national groups like the American Diabetes Association and the American Cancer Society as well as HSUS. Donations go to help fight cancer and treat diabetes, right? According to Bloomberg Markets, most of the money for these campaigns goes into InfoCision’s pocket. And donors not only may have no idea, but may be misled by the telemarketers as to how much money will go to charity. (InfoCision agreed to pay $75,000 to “ward off” action from the Ohio attorney general.) Sound familiar? We’ve shown how HSUS has had campaigns with other telemarketers that give off a false impression about how much money will go to charity. One (Donor Care Center) says to donors that “it is our best estimate that HSUS will receive at least 50% of the funds raised on this campaign”—even though, according to the contract, only 0.05 percent is supposed to go to HSUS. Another (Donor Services Group) says “it could be approximately 40% – 50% over two years” despite the contract laying out that 2 percent of proceeds will go to HSUS. HSUS’s contract with InfoCision shows that the telemarketer is (supposedly) more forthcoming with potential donors who ask about how much money will go to charity (a whopping “at least 2%”). Of course, donors have to ask—that information isn’t exactly offered up right off the bat. The script does show, however, that InfoCision plays up HSUS’s hands-on care for animals. But HSUS isn’t primarily a direct-care organization. It declared $48 million in “advocacy and public policy” expenses in 2010—just about half of its total program expenses—and it doesn’t run a single pet shelter. Yes, Wayne and company, we know HSUS or its affiliates run a few wildlife or horse sanctuaries. But it certainly appears that HSUS has a much bigger budget for things like pushing PETA-like vegan propaganda than actually caring for animals. Raising money, certainly, is near the top of the list of HSUS priorities, to the tune of $47 million in fundraising-related costs in 2010 alone. And that direct care HSUS’s telemarketers are playing up? That appears to largely be spay-neuter procedures performed mostly by other people. But because they occur under the banner of HSUS’s “Spay Day” event— essentially a PR campaign—HSUS counts them. Get the picture? HSUS seems just as cynical and sleazy in its fundraising as any other example we can see. The latest news is just par for the course. The Scoop / Page 65 The Warren County Agricultural and Livestock Fair Walking Horse Show McMINNVILLE, TN - The Warren County Agricultural and Livestock Fair Walking Horse Show was held Saturday, September 15, at the fairgrounds in McMinnville, TN. This was a great night to have a show with mild, cool temperatures. The Honorable Michael Burton judged the 23 class event. There was much to do before the show started, with the Warren County Agricultural and Livestock Fair taking place as well. There was a large crowd present to support the show. The Lead Line class opened the show. It was, by far, the largest class of the night. There were so many entries that they made a complete line around the entire ring with one right behind the other. All entries went home with a blue ribbon and a trophy. Blake Sims Stables had a great night and took home three blues. The first win of the night was Kaylee Hash aboard She’s Magic To The Boys in the County Pleasure Class for Warren County Residents and again in the Country Pleasure class for the John Hash Family. Later in the evening, Blake Sims made the night special after directing She’s Magic To The Boys’s offspring, Sic’ Em On A Chicken K & L, to the blue in the Two Year Old Open class for the John Hash Family. Mac Benham was delighted with his win in the Open Show Pleasure Class with Gen’s Armed With Charm for owner, Kelly Dunn. Claiming top honors in the Walking Horse Stake was Wire Transfer with Brad Beard in the irons for J.W. Morgan. A great time was had by all at the McMinnville show. To all exhibitors, trainers and owners, congratulations on a job well done! Please visit the SCOOP’s free website at www.thescooponline.com. With new horse shows being planned and added to the calendar, and shows affiliating and confirming times and dates, it’s time to make plans to attend these upcoming events. The SCOOP is going to give you a little more information about these shows and the location to assist you in deciding which events you, your family and friends will attend so that you can make the most of your weekend. Best of luck to all the trainers and exhibitors at all of the Fall shows! “Nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina…” What: North Carolina Championship Walking Horse Show When: October 4-6, 2012 Where: Western North Carolina Agricultural Center, Asheville, NC Affiliation: PRIDE HIO Judges: Newton Parks, Bill Reel, and Frankie Roark Stall Reservations: Contact Yvonna Matthis at 704-689-8772. Reserved Seating: Contact Terri Mosley at 336-786-2299. Camper Hookup & Vendors: Contact Athy Robinson at 919-618-1889. The North Carolina Championship Walking Horse Show is always a fall favorite! The show is the first full weekend in October. This year’s show will feature exhibitions by Mr. Heisman, Godfather By Ultracopy, ACC, Roethlisberger, Acapulco, and others. In addition to very talented and beautiful horses, there is the Dog Show where you can see some of the horse industry’s best canines. One of the highlights of the Dog Show is the costume class. Bring your canine friend and enjoy the Dog Show or just go watch. The Dog Show is held on Saturday morning in the sales arena. It is a real treat that you will not want to miss! There is so much to do in Asheville, NC, so make your trip a memorable one while you’re in for this horse show. A trip to the Biltmore Estate is a must! Take a tour of this magnificent house, wander around the tranquil gardens, taste the Biltmore wine collection or participate in a Land Rover off-road experience, all located on the estate’s 8,000 acres set in the midst of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Of course, the mountain setting of Asheville lends itself to many outdoor activities for the city’s visitors, from zip line canopy tours, to hiking and biking or a scenic drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway. If you have any more time to spare, there are some great finds to be had in terms of shopping in Asheville. There are many talented local artists, so if you’re in the market for painting, this city has some great galleries. A walk around historic downtown Asheville and Biltmore Village will give you some great choices as far as antiques, jewelry, clothing and gifts go. For lunch, try Moe’s Original Bar B Que, traditional southern barbeque served with what we’ve heard to be the best cole slaw, macaroni and cheese and cornbread, to name a few of the delicious sides. The Tupelo Honey Restaurant is always packed, but well worth the wait for the fresh baked biscuits, shrimp and grits or build-your-own vegetable plate. The Asheville Brewing Company is another recommendation, because not only do they have a very large patio on which you can sit and enjoy the mountain breeze, but they also have great pizza and offer tours of the brewery every Friday afternoon. If you have a sweet tooth, you have to stop by the French Broad Chocolate Lounge, where they serve up everything from their own collection of unique handmade chocolates, the quintessential chocolate chip cookie and, to top it off, drinking chocolate (hot or cold)! So where do you stay when in Asheville? For those on a budget, there are several options. For one, there is The Pines Cottages, which, according to their website, is “a vintage cabin court motel” with original log cabins from the late 20’s and cottages from the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. Other affordable and comfortable options include the Best Western and Days Inn on Tunnel Road, and Holiday Inn Asheville – Biltmore West. The Clarion Inn and Fairfield Inn in Fletcher are in closer proximity to the show grounds. Page 74 / The Scoop “To understand the world, you must first understand a place like Mississippi.” ~WilliamFaulkner What: East Mississippi Fall Classic Horse Show When: October 12-13, 2012 Where: Louisville Coliseum, Louisville, MS Affiliation: SHOW HIO Judge: Brian Kiddy Stall information & seating: Contact Robert Higginbotham at 662-803-2017. Attending the East Mississippi Fall Classic Horse Show is an exciting way to celebrate your love of horses and enjoy a quiet weekend getaway. If history is your thing, you must check out the Nanih Waiya Historical Site, the legendary birthplace of the Choctaw Indian nation. Also, you can view a collection of antique fire engines and equipment at the American Heritage Fire Museum. The historic Strand Theater, built in 1923, is another interesting place to stop and see. Not only is Ivy Park where the show grounds are located, but it’s also a nice place to play or relax while in Louisville. Wander around the park and you’ll find a playground, walking track, picnic area and tennis courts. There are many locally owned and operated restaurants waiting for you to step in and take a break to refresh yourself after your hard work. Some places to try include Cuppa, a quaint coffee shop that, in addition to coffee, serves great snacks, bakery items and ice cream. If breakfast is what you’re in the mood for, Mary Lou’s Biscuit Bar has country ham and biscuits and delicious pancakes. Market Café is the place to go for a variety of sandwiches, a salad bar and a southern plate lunch that changes daily. As far as lodging goes, the Lake Tiak-O’Khata Khata Resort is one of three hotels designated as show headquarters. Not only do they have 77 rooms in the inn, but they also offer efficiency suites and waterfront cabins. Additionally, the Quality Inn and Homegate Inn would welcome you horse show weekend! The Scoop / Page 75 Fun on the Delta... What: Tunica Fall Classic When: November 8-10, 2012 Where: Paul Battle, Jr. Arena, Tunica, MS Affiliation:SHOW HIO Judges: Nathan Clark, Holly Liddell Sanders, The Tunica Fall Classic (formerly the Delta Fall Classic) has been voted as the Best MultiNight Show of the Year in 2009 and 2010, so this is one horse show you won’t want to miss! The show is now under the auspices of the Walking Horse Trainers’ Association, the Foundation for the Advancement and Support of the Tennessee Walking Horse (FAST), and the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration. A great way to enjoy the beautiful fall weather is to head down to Willows, Harrah’s very own sporting clay and hunting center. Just down the street from the casinos, this skeet and sporting clay course is a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of the casinos. There’s also Cottonwoods Golf Course located nearby and the Tunica Queen Riverboat on which you can hop aboard and cruise down the mighty Mississippi. If shopping is more down your alley, there are some 30 outlet stores at the Casino Factory Shoppes Center. Additionally, you can make the short drive down Highway 61 to downtown Tunica to experience the small town charm of local antique shops and gift shops, including local favorites 1251 Place Gifts and Antiques and Ann-Tiques. If that’s not enough, you can drive to Memphis in under an hour! For dining choices, first you need to eat at The Hollywood Casino Café. You may have heard of this restaurant before, as it is a landmark, having been in business since 1969. You may have seen it on the Travel Channel on the Deep Fried Paradise series. The show highlighted the café’s well-known fried dill pickles. Of course if you know the song “Walking In Memphis,” you may also remember singer Marc Cohn singing about Muriel playing the piano “every Friday at the Hollywood,” which as you now know, is the Hollywood Café! If you want to treat yourself to a meal fit for kings, then you must visit Jack Binion’s Steakhouse at the Horseshoe Casino. The buffets at all of the casinos are sumptuous and ALL you can eat! An interesting side trip while attending the Jubilee is Cook’s Natural Science Museum, one of the few private museums in the United States authorized by the federal government to include eagle exhibits in their collection. Even better, the museum is free! Point Mallard Park is also worth visiting. It’s a 500 acre park with all sorts of activities to choose from, including an 18-hole golf course, a driving range, batting cages, a three mile hiking/jogging/biking trail and an indoor ice skating rink that is open year round One of the restaurants you must try if you haven’t already is the famous Big Bob Gibson’s BBQ, a Decatur staple that has been in business since 1925. There’s also Simp McGhee’s, known for its Cajun food, Curry’s for gourmet sandwiches and salads. If you have a sweet tooth, stop by The Daily Brew, an espresso shop and gelateria (a place that sells gelato, a.k.a. Italian ice cream) or Morgan Price Candy Company and try their delectable homemade chocolates and toffee. Clemson is a small college town with charm. While you’re in Clemson, some places you will want to visit are Fort Hill, an antebellum plantation house that once was the home of John C. Calhoun and Thomas F. Clemson. The South Carolina Botanical Gardens are a beautiful place to see, and Friday night marks the end of the free music series at the amphitheatre, so make plans to attend if can. There is also the Clemson Farmer’s Market that is open October 28 from 3:30-6:30 pm. There is a golf course just minutes from the showgrounds to satisfy you golf lovers! When you’re not at the barn, take some time to do some shopping at some of the local shops such as Riverhurst, a store with an assortment of accessories, picture frames and personalized items, The White Rabbit or The Fashion Shack in Anderson, where you’ll find gently used clothing with designer labels for great prices Just a 13 mile drive from Clemson you can venture to Seneca, SC and visit its unique shops, including Patina on the Alley, the place to go for fabulous jewelry and original artwork by local artists and Porta Portese, a shop with 30 unique dealers who bring their wares to sell at this one of a kind store. The show was held in the Livestock Center at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, TN. The show had 84 classes throughout the three-day event, beginning at 7 PM nightly. The judges for the event were Robbie Spiller, Ginger Simpson and Leah Boyd. The show was affiliated with the SHOW HIO. One of the neatest classes at the National Spotted Show World Grand Championship was the lead line class. This year was the first time that the kids were all awarded a set of roses. These participants were “glitzed” and “blinged” to perfection. The class was packed with gorgeous children and ponies The final class of the show was the NSSHA World Grand Championship. After a competitive class, the entries were asked to park in and remove the saddles so the judges could rate them not only on their performance, but also on presentation and conformation. Wearing the roses from the ring and taking home all the fame and glory were Shakes And Shadows with Brock Tillman for proud owner, Don Woodson. This duo won the preliminary class on Thursday night setting their sights on the roses. This was Brock’s first time to ever show in the stake class at the National World Championship show and it turned out to be a great decision because his debut was tri-colored ribbons and roses! Brock has shown and won many World Championship titles in the walking horse industry, but this was his debut in the Spotted Saddle Horse industry. Shakes And Shadows also carried owner, Don Woodson, to the 2008 NSSHA World Grand Championship title. This horse has many titles in his resume in both the NSSHA and the SSHBEA. This is the second time this fine horse has won this prestigious title. This team’s next stop will be the SSHBEA World Grand Championships. Please support this duo as they vie for another World Grand Championship title. The SCOOP Walking Horse Publication would like to take the opportunity to congratulate all the exhibitors, trainers, owners and winners for a job well done! For more information on the NSSHA visit their website at www.nssha.com. and please visit the SCOOP’s FREE website at www.thescooponline.com 2012 NSSHA Open Shod World Grand Champion Shakes And Shadows and Brock Tillman for owners Don and Dianne Woodson. They tied the knot in an adorable atmosphere that included the couple’s favorite four-legged friends. The wedding included their horses and a backdrop of hay bales and neighs as they said “I do,” which made the lights decorating the barn even brighter! Natalie’s daughter, Kurstin was a big part in the wedding. The couple will reside in Readyville, TN. You will see this family at the local spotted shows and, when there isn’t a show going on, you will catch them riding their horses on the trails. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Jason Sanders.
