2015 Fall National Lines - AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary
“BUILD A BETTER FUTURE FOR OUR VETERANS” KATHRYN M. BERNING NATIONAL PRESIDENT NATIONAL LINES FALL 2015 “BUILD A BETTER FUTURE FOR OUR VETERANS” Kathy Berning National President 1015 West 3rd Street Cedar Falls, Iowa 50613 319-266-9626 [email protected] You have honored me by electing me as AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary National President. The National Convention in Birmingham, Alabama was just a short time ago but everything moves quickly for the Auxiliary. As of September first our new Officers have taken over. These are talented women with the resolve to build better lives for our Veterans, our communities and our children. They will be contacting their Department counterparts with information and ideas to be share with Local Auxiliaries. Please take the time to read what they have to say and share that information. As we move forward I will be continuing the project of PNC Via of the Warrior Transition Workshops. Information brochures are being developed and will be available soon. I encourage members to donate to this project and hope to provide a workshop for female Veterans. As we know their needs are different from their male counterparts and this workshop can work to bring their issues to light and help them adopt change in their lives. Take the time to support all Veterans. Remember volunteering takes time. See if you can find a little time to give back this year. To our members, I wish you a tremendous year. You are the center of our organization, our HEART. Only with you are we able to continue to do the great work and support all of the programs and projects that are important to those Veterans. I am asking you to continue to “BUILD A BETTER FUTURE FOR OUR VETERANS”. A very BIG thank you to all who attended the 69 th AMVETS National Ladies Auxiliary Convention. YOU ARE THE BEST!! I hope we offered you a little somthing extra to go with our committee meetings, business sessions and awards program. Dr. Daisy Century’s surprise performance as Sojourner Truth at our FOCUS program was well received. She was so complimentary of our organization…”BEST AUDIENCE I’VE EVER HAD!” The Honors and Awards Program was also GREAT!! Thank you to Cindy Rice, Honors and Award Chairman, all National Officers and Committee members – you did a wonderful job! You gave me an unbelievable year, filled with hospitality, friendship and fun. Each Department was beautiful in many different ways; scenery, special events, VAMC’s, Fisher Houses, local culture and very special people. Camp Corral Update Thanks to everyone who contributed to our efforts to send a child to camp. Camp Corral is a free, one-of-a-kind summer camp for children, ages 8-15, of wounded, disabled or fallen military service members. CONTRIBUTIONS to my Presidents Project totaled $19,194.01!! The children were so excited; for some it was their first camp experience and others were repeat campers. It was such a treat for me to visit and help campers find their cabin, talk to mothers, grandmothers and other volunteers. THANK YOU again for your participation in the CAMP CORRAL project. Camp Corral has locations in Oklahoma, Minnesota, Colorado, Texas, South Caroline, Kansas, Michigan, Ohio, Arizona, Indiana, New York, North Carolina, California, Florida, Illinois, Washington, Kentucky, Virginia and Pennsylvania. A special THANK YOU to Carol and Sonja! To say we have had some ups and downs would be mild; you did a beautiful job! I have given you my best effort during the past year and will continue to do so in the years to come. I will continue to give 110% to our members. Thank you for the trust and opportunity to share and motivate our members with our number one program MEMBERSHIP. Membership is the roots to our tree and the lifeline to our growth. There can never be overkill in putting the AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary brand out front. The more we talk about our organization the more we are known. It takes a concentrated effort on everyone’s part to help promote membership. My theme for the year is: This BEAR’S Repeating - Membership Starts With You! Penny the Boyd’s Bear would like to help promote Membership this year starting with YOU bringing in one (1) new member. B Be E Excited A About R Renewals Life Members: Suggestion some members would love to become a life member in your Auxiliary, but just cannot afford the large fee at one time. I’m asking that your Auxiliary would consider having a payment plan for that member. You set the time limit and you would have to keep up with the balance owned until paid in full. You will NOT be able to send payments in to National. The portion for National Life Membership dues is $200.00. It’s time to get your membership drive on the move. The deadline for renewals is December 31st and renewals must be to National Headquarters postmarked no later than January 31st. We look forward to processing your membership. The National portion of annual dues is $13.00 and in unchartered states it is $14.50 which is sent directly to National Headquarters. National Life member dues portion is $200.00 and Honorary membership is $5.00. You are still responsible for the Department requirement of dues which varies in each Department. Along with the membership projects above, remember to request our membership brochure with information on our programs to help you with your membership drives. They are available from National Headquarters. I will be mailing out a membership package and some ideas to help you promote membership in your auxiliaries and states. Please drop me an e-mail or note if you have any great ideas to help out with membership, I would love to hear from you so we can share with everybody. Please contact me if you have any questions, together we will continue to grow our roots and let the world know - This BEAR’S repeating- Membership starts with you! “INVEST IN THE LIVES OF CHILDREN” Marvell Ruppel National 2nd Vice President N33 W7120 Buchanan St. Cedarburg, WI 53012 262-305-1330 [email protected] Thank you, for electing me as your National 2nd Vice President. It is an honor and privilege to serve our members in this position and I would appreciate your ongoing support throughout the year. My theme for this year is “Invest in the Lives of Children”. We know that our children are our future, and as such we, as a Veteran’s Service Organization need to do everything in our power to ensure that children are healthy, safe and receive a good education. We need to understand that many children live in poverty and go to bed each night without knowing where their next meal will come from. They live in a heightened state of vigilance on the playground, in their school, or their homes. They are at risk for neglect, physical, and sexual assault, generally at the hand of a parent or family friend. We also need to remember the children of our deployed service men and women. These children live without one or both of their parents, never knowing when (or if) they will come home. The traumatic experiences children undergo can significantly impact upon their future unless there is the support of caring family and community members. The opportunities to help the children in your community are plentiful .Throughout the year I will work to promote the impact of trauma on children and how you can make a meaningful change on a variety of levels – locally, state and nationally. Locally, you can purchase school supplies for schools to distribute to children; you can provide seasonal clothing for children, and donations of toys or other educational material. You can educate teachers, day cares, and other agencies about the impact of trauma so they see the child, and ask “What happened to you?” versus “What’s wrong with you?” On the state level you can look at the current policies in place that help traumatized children, including Veteran’s programs that address the needs of Worchid children whose parent would have been eligible for AMVET membership. This includes a parent (mother or father) who died in service or has died from causes since becoming discharged, whether the death was service connected or from natural causes. Nationally we will continue to support the John Tracy Clinic program. The John Tracy Clinic program is a wonderful organization that provides services to children born with hearing impairments and their families. In the weeks ahead packets of information will be sent out to your Department Child Welfare Chairperson. This is information that is meant to be distributed throughout your Department. If you do not receive this information I would encourage you to contact your Department Chairperson and ask that this information be sent to you for your program. Congratulations to our newly elected National President, National Officers, Department, District, Local Presidents and Officers for 2015-2016. God Bless America! God bless the servicemen and women who have served, and continue to serve in order to preserve the Freedoms we share. God bless all our Auxiliary members who dedicate themselves and their time to serving the children of our Country. Barbara Valley National 3rd Vice President 25681 Orange Hill Road Danville, Ohio 43014 Cell: 740-485-2873 [email protected] Congratulations to all the newly elected and appointed officers. I look forward to a great year and working with all the Department Third Vice Presidents. My theme this year is “Opening the Doors in Your Community.” There are so many wonderful projects to help within our communities under this office. Donating blood, food for the hungry, working with the Salvation Army, volunteering at an inter-city church or a local homeless shelter are just a few. With so much happening with fires and flood, we must all pitch in to help those in need. We go to our communities and ask for help when we are doing a project, so in turn, we must show our support and help those in our community. I’m sure there are many services that are not reported that you may think are not under Community Service. If you’ve helped that neighbor down the street mow his lawn or taken them to the store, report it. Just remember you must get approval at your Local meeting first. Take a look at the end results of what you do and that will help up know where such things go on your service report. All Auxiliaries do a super job, so please take the credit and report them. Remember what we do for our own we do not count. Our “own” means the members of our Post as well as family members. As most of you know Paws With A Cause® is our National Third Vice project. March is Paws With A Cause Month® and I encourage each of you to help raise money for this worthy project. Training service dogs is not something that happens overnight; it takes months and months of training, followed by placing the right dog with that special person in need. Many of our Veterans have been helped with these service dogs. For those who have attended National Convention you have seen first-hand the enormous work Paws With a Cause® has accomplished since their humble beginnings in 1979. Allow me to thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve as your National Third Vice President/Community Service Chairman this year. With your help, we will all “Open Doors in Our Communities” everywhere. God Bless each of you and God Bless America. Joan Sirek National Chaplain 928 Elm Road N. Stevens Point, WI 54481 [email protected] Thank you for giving me the honor of serving as your 2015-2016 National Chaplain. I will work to inspire you while holding The AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary and all Veterans in my prayers. My theme will be “May God Bless Us Today, Tomorrow and Always”. O God, help us to always show mercy and kindness toward others while being honest and true as we members of the AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary Family work to energize our programs and be the spark for our Veterans. Just a few reminders: 1. All deceased members are reported by the Local Chaplain, who prepares (4) four copies of the Deceased Member Notification Form. The Local Chaplain shall retain (1) one copy and forward (3) three copies to the Department Chaplain. The Department Chaplain retains (1) one copy to National Headquarters. Additional copies will be made as required according to the Department and Local By-laws. 2. Make sure to include a next of kin if known and note if the member is a PNP or PDP. 3. Please do not hold the deceased notices. Send them in as soon as received. Thank you again for your faith in me. Support Scholarship Help To Share A S.M.I.L.E. Sheila Jackson National Scholarship Officer 4433 South 18th Place Phoenix, Arizona 85040 Cell: 602-702-9421 [email protected] Thank you for electing me as your National Scholarship Officer. I am looking forward to privilege and honor to serve you and this wonderful organization to the best of my abilities as your incoming National Scholarship Officer. Congratulations to all the 2015 - 2016 newly elected officers on the National, Department, District and Local levels, and all those that have been appointed as well. Let’s take advantage of this great opportunity that has been bestowed upon us to serve our Veterans and their families in our communities to our fullest. My Theme/Project is: Help to Share a S.M.I.L.E - Scholarships do help to Make Individual and families Lives Exceptional! For the upcoming year, I will be seeking the assistance of each and every NEC woman, Department Officer, and members to help with my 2016 goal, which is to raise enough donations to be able to provide 6 additional students with a S.M.I.L.E’s this year. By accepting my challenge to each member is to make a small donation of just $1.00 to the National Scholarship Program By encouraging each Local and Department to host at least 1 National Scholarship Project donating those funds to the National Scholarship Program. By helping to promote the Scholarship program by placing at least 1 or all 3 National Scholarship Applications (listed below) in a students and/or counselor hands this year. It is also important that you help us to attempt to cut down on the amount applications we have to disqualify by advising them that EVERY space on the application must be filled out (N/A is acceptable) and applications turned in by the deadline of July 1st, 2016. AMVETS National Ladies Auxiliary Scholarships: General Scholarship - $1000.00 and $750.00 Career Start Scholarships of: $500.00 College Support Scholarships of: $500.00 The above scholarship applications and criteria are available on the AMVETS National Ladies Auxiliary website: www.amvetsaux.org Scholarship Awards presented at the National Convention - PNP Charlene D. Kee Department Award and PNP Carol King Local Award. The criteria and entry form, if needed, will be in the Convention Digest. We have an exciting new year ahead of us. Thank you again for your vote of confidence in electing me as your National Scholarship Officer. And moreover, thank you in advance for the work that you do and will do this year to help promote Scholarship on all levels. I look forward to working with youl! “Remember Their Sacrifices” Dee Baggett National Americanism Officer 13238 Rose Hollow Way Astatula, Florida 34705 352-742-8215 [email protected] I would like to thank everyone for the opportunity to serve as your National Americanism Officer. It is an honor and a privilege that I represent the AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary to the best of my abilities. My theme this year is “Remember their Sacrifices.” If we do this at all times we will have a banner year. There are so many ways to honor our military and Veterans. All troops like to receive letters and goodies from home. If you need ideas finding names please let me know. Homeless and less fortunate veterans need our help too. Look for stand downs, transitional housing, food programs and other places in your local areas; some VA hospitals have a list of places for the discharged Veterans to go to receive help. These Veterans could use a variety of items I am sure your Local Auxiliary could collect! I challenge each Local Auxiliary to find at least one program in their local communities to support our military and/or Veterans. My project this year will be the lobbies of the dorm buildings at Freedoms Foundation where almost anyone staying passes through. The carpeting alone is over 20 years old. Other items that need attention are the walls, furniture, televisions and hardware on doors and windows. If each local would donate at least $50.00, we could make a big difference. Freedoms Foundation will also be presenting each Auxiliary with a certificate of appreciation for all donations $100.00 or more, plus the incentive awards!!! Please see the National website for the full brochure. There will be different levels of appreciation which have been mailed out to your NEC Women and Department Americanism Officers, or contact me if you would like a copy. The projects that can be performed are unlimited. AMVETS has some great ideas about the auxiliary getting involved in Legislative Issues for our military and veterans, and they will totally walk you through the level of involvement you are seeking. You can present flags and/or flag programs to schools or other youth organizations. Sponsor “Get Out and Vote” campaigns or volunteer to man the polls on voting day. I could go on and on! Please refresh your ideas with the wealth of information that can be found in your manuals on pages 45 -47 and 102 – 111. Please plan your participation with the AMVETS on the Americanism Poster and Essay contest soon. The full brochure and entry forms can be found on their website. Make sure you follow the deadlines and criteria. When the program is completed these entries need to be mailed to AMVETS National Headquarters. If you have any great ideas to share or if you need any assistance, please feel free to contact me. Remember that – “Americanism MUST and SHOULD be a large part of your overall programming.” Thank you for all that you do and always “Remember Their Sacrifices”! Leslie P. Nell National Hospital Officer 913 Truman Drive Pekin, IL. 61554-1511 309-346-2175 [email protected] Thank you for electing me to serve you this year as Hospital Officer. I would like to congratulate all of the newly elected officers on the National, State, District and Local levels. Together we can make this an excellent year while we serve our Veterans and our communities. We have started a new year of volunteerism for those in nursing homes, hospitals, VA clinics and VA hospitals. As we visit we are doing so much for those in need and sometimes we will be the only visitors they receive. Many times just a smile or holding their hand will be the bright spot in their day. Share your time and read to them, play cards or help with a puzzle. Warm their hearts by showing you care. Please remember to include youth volunteers. They have the uncanny ability to really boost the spirits when visiting hospitalized Veteran. My theme this year is “Measure Up in Hospital Work”. Our National project is St Jude Children’s Research Hospital. There are also satellite clinics located in Peoria IL, Springfield MO, Johnson City TN, Huntsville AL, Charlotte NC, Shreveport and Baton Rouge LA. This hospital never turns a child away for their inability to pay for treatment. They rely on donations not just from large corporations, but from organizations such as ours. Donations also go to help provide lodging, food and transportation costs for families with a child in treatment. Large or small, we know that every donation helps. I look forward to working with each of you this year to ensure we have a successful Hospital program. If you have any ideas for fundraisers please contact me at [email protected]. Thank you for your support and if there is anything I can do for you please don’t hesitate in contacting me. Marie Rorrio National VAVS Representative 16 Till Street Enfield, Connecticut 06082 860-836-3468 [email protected] ANNUAL JOINT REVIEW TIME September is Annual Joint Review month for all VAVS Representatives. I received thirty- eight (38) Annual Joint Reviews (AJR’s), for fiscal year 2014, which ended last September. As I announced at National Convention in Birmingham, Alabama my goal for 2015 is to receive Fifty (50) AJR’s. This is a very realistic goal. We all need to do our part to complete our AJR during the month of September. When you complete your AJR please ask the Chief of Voluntary Service to mail a copy to me or you can mail one just to make sure you are counted. Remember, if you cannot complete your AJR ask one of the VAVS Deputies; they are part of your team. THANK YOU FOR BEING PART OF THE FIFTY GOAL FOR 2015. VETERANS As we approach the holidays, remember the hospitalized Veterans, homeless Veterans, and Veterans of all ages. Visiting a hospitalized Veteran is one way to show your support and honor him as a hero. You will have an opportunity to participate in many activities at your VAMC to show you appreciate their service to our country. Remember our youth when holiday activities are planned; they are great helpers, and usually enjoy the volunteer opportunities. Let’s unite together and make a commitment to honor our American Heroes in a special way this year. VAVS COMMITTEE MEETINGS FY2014 is about to come to a close with September meetings. Remember, your attendance at these meetings is important to maintain AMVETS Auxiliary’s membership on the VAVS Committee. VHA Handbook 1621.1 Page 8 states “(6) Termination of Membership. Organizations will be removed from the VAVS Committee when none of the certified members is in attendance at three consecutive meetings.” At least one of the certified representatives should be in attendance at all meetings. NATIONAL CONVENTION Our National VAVS Leadership Award is awarded at the National Convention’s Commander and President’s Banquet. This year Loraine Adkins was our recipient from Iowa City, Iowa; she is a member and volunteers at Iowa City VA Medical Center. Remember to document your hours and contributions to the VAVS program and report them to your local hospital chairman. The James Parke Scholarship, awarded each year at the (NAC) National Advisory Committee Conference, is a great incentive for youth volunteers. Feel free to call or e-mail me if you have questions or need assistance. HAVE A GOOD YEAR! PNP Charlene Kee National Convention Chair P. O. The complete 2014 – 2015 winners list can be found in back of this edition of the National Lines. Thank you again Madam President Kathy and I look forward to seeing you and the rest of the National Board at our meetings. CLARICE POISSON National Snappiest 4328 Thorndyke Avenue SW Wyoming, Michigan 49548 616-558-2884 [email protected] My regrets to my Sister Sackette Ossifers. It was most unkind to elect me to the lowest office of the National Sackettes! For those who are questioning my negative grammar the Fun and Honor Group of AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary, known as Sackettes, does everything backwards. Anyone interested in joining our group, please contact me and I will give you the information needed. We are definitely an asset to any Auxiliary as we do not submit any service reports but give all hours, miles, cash donations, etc. to our Local Auxiliaries! We do a lot of work for our Scholarship Program. My Local Unit gives one scholarship to a nurse attending a school of nursing every year. Space neglects giving more positive acts of service work, but I'm sure you get the picture. Our Local Unit has a Fracas every other month which is total disorder. Please consider joining Sackettes! God Bless! Locals that have a Department Junior AMVETS are to mail their dues to the Department (which includes the Department and National portions). Copies of the D&Rs are also to be sent to the National Junior President, National Senior Vice President and the National Auxiliary Coordinator. I am looking forward to the upcoming year with working with our Junior AMVETS and their Coordinators. I am still learning to so please call me with any questions or concerns you may have. You may have a better idea on how to grow. We are all learning together. If you are interested in starting a Junior AMVETS at your local Post or wanting information on what they are all about please call me or send me an e-mail. I would love to hear from you. Where have you seen these words? If you are on Facebook, you have seen these as your choice actions for posts presented by your friends. Now that National convention is over and we are back to our daily work in our auxiliaries, it is time to decide how you are going to do your scrapbook/history book. Here are some tips on starting: Choose someone who really LIKES to do scrapbooking and has a keen eye for detail. They don’t have to be a professional. Choose a great theme to carry through for the year. Make sure you follow the rules listed in the Convention Digest and the Auxiliary manual. Be sure each item required is present and in the proper order. The Bylaws need to be signed. Check your spelling. It is very disheartening to be judging books and have to disqualify a book for not following the guidelines. Make sure you COMMENT on any pictures or newspaper clippings. Explain what is going on in the pictures and the names of the people. You will want to be able to look back after a few years and not have to guess who that was in that picture or what that special project involved. Bring your book to National Convention to SHARE. It is so much fun to look through the books and see how the auxiliaries have contributed to the community and to benefit the veterans. When you SHARE your talents with others, you may give them some ideas on how to do special projects in their local and how to capture it in their own book. Also, if you would like to help with judging the scrapbooks/history books/covers at National convention, just drop me a note. You may email me or send me a note by mail. The more people we have to SHARE the work will make it go easier. Contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
