Flying Lesson
Winston Churchill compared his own contrary
nature to kite flying when he said, “Kites rise highest
against the wind, not with it.”
If you’re ready to get a kite flying high, begin by
choosing a place that is wide open without any trees or
power lines nearby. Parks, fields and beaches are best.
You want a good, steady breeze, but not a strong
wind. The best wind speed is 5 to 25 mph. Simple kite
styles, such as the delta, diamond and dragon, work
best with less wind, while more complex box and
parafoil shapes need windier conditions to stay aloft.
If you have someone to help with the launch, have
them carry the kite away from you while you let out the
line. Then ask them to hold the kite up and let it go
with the next gust of wind. If you are by yourself, stand
with your back to the wind and hold up the kite. Let
the wind catch it, and let out the line as the kite climbs.
A tail helps your kite remain stable in stronger
winds. Lightweight materials are best, since you can
add a flashier tail using more material without adding
too much weight.
“Oh, Oh, Oh, Let’s go fly a kite, up to the highest height!”
from Mary Poppins

Friends of the Earth
Protecting the environment
begins with an appreciation for
nature. As you step outside this
spring to enjoy the warmer
weather, pay attention to the
signs of life around you—the
new buds on trees and shrubs,
birds singing in the sky, and the
colorful wings of a butterfly in
flight. Each is a sweet reminder
of why Earth-friendly efforts
such as recycling and water
conservation are important.
Beth Woolway, Activity
Coordinator
We are now in the “green”
month of the year, and for our
friends up north, they are
singing the praises of
springtime. We, of course, are
ready for Cactus League Spring
Training starting on March 1st.
Will the D-backs, Cardinals, and
Cubs make it to post season play
this year? Stay tuned to your
favorite sports channel.
NCAA March Madness starts
on March 15th and finishes in
Texas with the finals on April
4th. How will our Arizona teams
do this season, as well as our
other college teams across the
nation? Again, stay tuned to any
of the college sports channels.
Have you ever tried your
hand at patio gardening? Many
of the grocery, lawn and
gardening stores have tomatoes
and peppers to try your “green”
thumb on. If not, silk flowers
always look nice in a flower pot.
We have a lot of outings and
special events this month. So
read through the calendar and
circle those events you want to
attend. Remember to wear green
on St. Patty’s Day. Everyone is
Irish on March 17th. I will close
with this nice Irish saying:
“Peace on your hand and health
to all who shake it.” ~ Beth

Resident Couple of
the Month
Arts and
Crafts
We created from our craft paper
products Valentines for veterans.
We spent two weeks creating
individual Valentines for the
local Phoenix VA hospital. On
them we put encouraging
sayings, thanking them for their
service to our country.
Ginny Wagner (l) & Arlene Leccese (r)
working on Valentine cards.
Carol & Michael Bernard
Marian Mercer working the Veterans
Valentine project.
Super Bowl Results
Pet of the Month
On Feb. 7th, we held a Super
Bowl 50 pregame trivia party.
We had great attendance of
residents who came to enjoy the
food and trivia. Mary Helen
Housch, Ginny Wagner, and
Kathi Wade were the winners of
the Super Bowl related prizes.
Anna, Roxanne Mendelson’s cat
Kathi Wade, winner of a Super Bowl trivia
question.
We are long overdue in
welcoming Anna to the
neighborhood. You see, we have
been a neighborhood of dogs of
late, but the cat lovers are
moving in. Anna is a 5 year old
Russian Blue kitty. She loves to
watch the birds from her picture
window, is a very affectionate
and great companion for
Roxanne.
Michael and Carol Bernard
are our newest residents and a
lovely couple. Both started out
in the east coast; she was a
Pennsylvania girl and he started
out in the Georgetown area of
Washington D.C.
Mid-life they had a chance
encounter which brought them
together. Michael was smitten,
but Carol, not so much. Carol’s
mom was in Michael’s corner so
they took it slow and over the
next five years built a solid
foundation. With their blended
family of three children and six
grandchildren they have
celebrated 25 years of marriage.
Carol’s sense of style led her
to a career as an interior
decorator. Michael spent his
business life as a biochemist.
They are card playing fiends
when it comes to Rummikub,
Bridge, Bingo, and Hand & Foot.
They have referred many of their
friends from the First Baptist
Church to the Renaissance. They
are both very active in their
church. This delightful couple is
warm, funny, and a pleasure to
know. Thanks for joining us at
the Renaissance.

Talent Show
A view from the Talent Show stage.
Ruth and her rooster.
“Why did the rooster cross the
road? Because he had to get
away from the cackling hens.”
Kay Aichele reciting a comical reading.
She has recited this to her
great-grandchildren who loved it!
We had a wonderful turnout for
our Talent Show. Our very own
Kay Aichele and Mark Stibitz
participated in the event.
Claudia and Jerry Richards were
part of the judges group. Thank
you to all who came out to
support our talented group.

Spotlight
Mary Helen Housch is very “thoughtful”
about her January birthday.
Yesenia Castillo has been a
housekeeper for the Renaissance
for the past three years. She
enjoys her job because “I like
the residents a lot” and because
“every day is a little different.”
When asked if she has a
nickname she said, “Many of the
residents call me Yessie.”
Yesenia’s work week is
Saturday-Wednesday and she
likes that.
When not at work, she keeps
busy with her family, her
husband, Rodrigo, 10 year-old
daughter, Jasmine, and
4 year-old son, Rodrigo, Jr. They
can often be found outside
playing soccer together.
