Intergenerational Family of the Year Award
Jack and Ruth Fernsler have been nominated for IG Family of the Year along with all
their children, specifically the Patti and Steve DoBas and Nicky and John Dirks families
-all who are residents of Sheboygan County. This close-knit family supports one another, is engaged in each other’s interests and activities. They are involved in the community and serve as volunteers in many capacities. They are great family role models.
Jack and Ruth played a significant role in the promotion and building of Generations.
The interior design at Generations would not exist without the significant contributions
and time given by Ruth. Jack served as the PIC liaison with the City of Plymouth.
Patti has worked in early childhood for almost 34 years and serves as the Director of
Growing Generations. She is a leader/ advocate for quality child care services. She
embraces the concept of intergenerational programming and has done much to promote opportunities for children and seniors to work and play together. She currently is
involved with many committees.
Nicky Dirks is the longest employee of PIC, currently our Operations Admin & Rental
Coordinator. She demonstrates concern for Generations’ members and gives quality
service to all who come in contact with the facility. She supports the mission and vision
of PIC. Nicky is loyal, dedicated and has great work ethic. She is also an amazing
mom to her 2 daughters.
The love and importance of
family has been instilled by Jack
and Ruth through their children,
grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Benefits of water-based
exercise
RECREATION
|6
According to the CDC, swimming is the fourth most popular sports activity in the US and a
good way to get regular aerobic physical activity. Just 2 ½ hrs per week of aerobic physical activity, such as swimming, bicycling, or running can decrease the risk of chronic illnesses. This can also lead to improved health for people with diabetes and heart disease.
Swimmers have about half the risk of death compared with inactive people. People report
enjoying water-based exercise more than exercising on land. You can also exercise longer
in water than on land without increased effort or joint or muscle pain.
Water-based exercise can help people with chronic diseases. For people with arthritis, it
improves the use of affected joints without worsening symptoms. People with rheumatoid
arthritis have more health improvements after participating in hydrotherapy than with other activities. Water-based exercise also improves the use of affected joints and decreases
pain from osteoarthritis.
Water-based exercise improves mental health. Swimming can improve mood in both men
and women. For people with fibromyalgia, it can decrease anxiety. Exercise therapy in
warm water can decrease depression and improve mood. Water-based exercise can improve the health of mothers and their unborn child and it has a positive effect on the
mothers’ mental health. Parents of children with developmental disabilities find that recreational activities, such as swimming, improve family connections.
Water-based exercise can benefit older adults by improving the quality of life and decreasing disability. It also improves or maintains the bone health of post-menopausal women.
Exercising in water offers many physical and mental health benefits and is a good choice
for people who want to be more active. When in the water, remember to protect yourself
and others from illness and injury by practicing healthy and safe swimming behaviors.
In cooperation with the Plymouth
Community Education Department,
Generations has Aquatic programs
at the Plymouth High School Pool.
Programs are designed to provide
water exercises that promote mobility, range of motion and
strength development. No swimming skills are necessary.
SILVER SNEAKERS
|7
To participate in our fitness programs, all participants need a membership,
SilverSneaker coverage or pay the $2 guest fee per class. See membership information on page 21.
SilverSneakers Circuit: Combine fun with fitness to increase your cardiovascular and muscular endurance
power with a standing circuit workout. Upper-body strength work with hand-held weights, elastic tubing with
handles, and a SilverSneakers ball is alternated with low-impact aerobic choreography. A chair is used for
standing support, stretching and relaxation exercises. Meet on Mon, Wed, Fri 8:15-9:15 and 9:15 -10:15 am.
SilverSneakers Arthritis Exercise Class: The Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program is a low-impact
physical activity program proven to reduce pain and decrease stiffness. Classes meet for 1 hour two times
per week on Tuesday & Thursday’s at 9:30 am and 10:30 am. Class is led by a certified instructor, Fred
Brown. The participants in the class follow upper and lower extremity routines that work to improve range
of motion, muscle strength and muscle endurance. All exercises are easy to follow and can be replicated at
home.
The time is now to join the “Quick Fit” Exercise Program - To help get started in an exercise program, PACC
is offering this program for beginners. All exercises are non-impact and utilize low resistance equipment. No
matter your age or current physical condition, you can benefit from this program. Reaping the rewards of
exercise doesn’t require strenuous workouts or trips to the gym, it’s about adding more movement and activity to
your life, even in small ways. The “Quick Fit” program is not going to get you fit quickly. The name of the
program describes the amount of commitment needed to get started in an exercise class. The goal of the
program is to offer exercises that will help improve muscle strength, body control and flexibility. To learn more
about this program, see Fred. FEE: Paid membership or $2 guest fee !
Days/Times: Tue & Thur 8:30 - 9:00 am.
SilverSneakers Walk Fit : The miles keep growing in large part because of increased participation. In June
we logged almost 1800 miles. Our goal for 2016 is 20,000. We have currently walked over 10,000 miles.
Every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 8:30 we do a 2-mile fitness filled exercise walk. Put us on your
calendar and be a part of our walk fit team.
SilverSneakers Classic: Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to
increase muscular strength, range of movement and activities for daily living. Hand-held weights, elastic
tubing with handles and a SilverSneakers ball are offered for resistance. A chair is available if needed for
seated or standing support. Days/Times: Mon, Wed & Fri 10:15-11:15 am
SilverSneakers Yoga: Generations offers SilverSneakers Yoga every Monday, and Wednesday at 3:30 pm.
SilverSneakers Yoga will move your whole body through a complete series of seated and standing yoga poses.
Chair support is offered to safely perform a variety of seated and standing postures designed to increase flexibility, balance and range of movement. Restorative breathing exercises and final relaxation will promote stress reduction and mental clarity.
Overall participation sign-ins have reached over 7196 with
2550 sign-ins in April, 2388 sign-ins in May and 2258 signins in June. Exercise classes held the highest number of participants with 4018 sign-ins. Recreation programs continue
to grow with over 1105 sign-ins this quarter. The expansion
of the health and wellness programs has provided over 296
sign-ins. As we head into the 3rd quarter, we will continue
to offer a variety of programming. Participation in our programs will provide you with an opportunity to meet new
people, and give you a wonderful feeling of good health!

In cooperation with the Plymouth Youth
Athletic Association (PYAA), Generations
offered children ages 4 to 1st grade a
chance to learn and play baseball. This
year there were 12 teams with over 120
children in the league. Seniors from the
Plymouth Adult Community Center helped
assist in the program. Casey Takahashi
(Lakeland University Intern) and Maddy
Doll (Lakeland University Intern) managed
the league. An end of season bust up party
was held at Generations with families and
players enjoying ice cream along with
recognition for their efforts in learning to play baseball.

PACC MEMBER INFO FORM
Please complete the form below and return to the Generations Reception Desk. A member card will
be issued to you so you can sign-in for the programs you are attending. It is important & necessary
for each guest to sign in for the programs they attend each and every day. This is important because it helps Generations when applying for grants and supplying reports to our funders, such as
the City of Plymouth or other local donors. For Silver Sneaker members, signing in is the only
way we can receive reimbursement from Silver Sneakers-so it is CRITICAL that you sign in for
your exercise classes. There are computers at each entrance to make it easy for our guests to sign
in. NONE of this information will be shared with others unless there is an emergency.
