News from the Office…
The school is heating up; both literally and figuratively! May brings with it warm weather
and a sense of urgency as students are deeply immersed in their courses to prepare
themselves for the next grade or the next stage in their lives. Academics at this time of
year will incorporate a number of diverse learning opportunities such as field trips, athletic events and overnight trips to camp. Please keep an eye on correspondence coming
home from teachers which may include permission forms for upcoming excursions.
A reminder to all grade 8-11 students that Senior High Student Council Elections will be
taking place in May so be sure to read the announcements for more details on opportunities for you to participate in the democratic process and become a representative for
your fellow students.
Preparation for grad is well underway and in addition to finishing up final credits; grade
12 students will be completing scholarship applications, finalizing banquet attendees and
exploring plans for the next year. Please see the counselor’s corner for more Grad 2016
news.
The month of May will also bring some physical changes around the school; the gym is
having some new nets and backboards installed, there is a new trophy case in the hallway
and our playground will have some new trees planted this month as well. Spring is a time
of growth and excitement and we look forward to the busy schedules and heavy workloads but Mental Health Awareness Week also occurs in May so be sure to stop and smell
the flowers occasionally too.

Honour Band Concert
Spring Concert
The 2016 Eastman/Interlake Honour Band was held in Oakbank on April
22nd and 23rd. Top notch student musicians from several school divisions came together for a day and a half to rehearse, share, and perform music resulting in a truly wonderful concert. A BIG CONGRATULATIONS goes out to:

Social Justice News
On April 13th, the students and staff supported Day of Pink by wearing pink t-shirts. RBC provided prizes for those students who were creative in their pink outfit.
On April 28th, Matt Bucknor, player for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers visited our school. He has
been trained in the Red Cross, Beyond the Hurt program. The topics discussed included healthy
relationships and schools, power, bullying, labels and stereotypes, intervention-response and
prevention. The messages were delivered in a fun and engaging way, including personal stories
and connecting to their experiences as athletes.
Thank you to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Red Cross for sponsoring this worthwhile event.

MIDDLE YEARS NEWS
Middle Years Badminton
Congratulations to the Middle Years Badminton Players who attended the Amber Trails tournament on Saturday, April
16th. ÉESS made an excellent showing with all our players qualifying for the play offs.
Special recognition to:
Jade Oakley and Evan Leeson finished third overall in boys singles.
Lisha Lee finished fourth in girls singles.
Mason Cameron and Keegan Law finished fourth in boys doubles.
Emma Winram and Emma Shepard finished fourth in girls doubles.
It has been an excellent year for Middle years badminton at ÉESS. We have had a record
number of wins and our success was only enhanced at divisional crossovers on May 2 in
Whitemouth.
First place awards: Jzraelyne Kopp, Carter Ramsden and Bethany Wielgosh.
Second place awards: Emma Winram, Emma Shepherd, Carter Fuerst.
Third place awards: Jarvis Ewasko, Emily Price, Ali Carvalho, Teighlyn Kopp, Bella Seales,
Justin Kroeker and Noah Leppelmann.
Great showing this year and we look forward to more success next season!

Planning for Tomorrow
The end of the school year is fast approaching and it is time to begin planning for not only our summer, but for next
school year. For our graduating students, the final preparations for post-secondary education mean looking into and
applying for scholarships; our returning students are planning courses and perhaps taking some courses over the summer.
Grads 2016
The last two months of school are about to fly by. Not only are you planning for grad and all the excitement that surrounds that milestone, but many of you are also preparing for some sort of post-secondary education. Local and Provincial scholarships are posted on the school website- I strongly encourage all of you to apply for as many as you can. For
those of you who applied to the University of Manitoba or University of Winnipeg prior to March 1, please be reminded
that your grades pay!

Grad Updates
Grads 2016
Ticket sales and final grad parent meeting is Wednesday May 25th. Ticket sales will run from 4-6, with the parent
meeting in the auditorium commencing immediately after.
Grads 2017
Grad apparel will be going on sale in the first week of May. Please pay close attention to deadlines as this will be the
only order submitted for the startup of school in September (delivery of clothing first week of September). Another
order will be placed in mid –October (delivery of clothing middle December).
ÉESS PRIDE
Community Partnerships
Mr. Kusyk’s metals class has built work benches for the woods room as it is being redone
this summer. Mr. Maguet approached Ray's
Mobile to see if they would be willing to paint
them for us to ensure a more professional finish. Ray said he would be happy to do so as
long as the students where able to come and
be a part of the finishing process.
The students all went to Ray's shop where
they learned to properly prep the benches and
then each were given the opportunity to do
some priming and finish painting in the spry
booth. Ray provided the safety equipment
and such... This was a great learning opportunity for our students and a great way to
work with a local business.
Congratulations Nolan!
Congratulations to Nolan Penner for his athletic wins at the Kinsmen Special Olympics Track & Field event.
Nolan placed first in the 60m and 200 m and 3rd in shot put. Great work Nolan!!
Culinary Success
On Thursday, April 14 Doris Doelger was awarded a silver medal at the 19th
Annual Manitoba skills competition. The competition took place at the Paterson Globe Building, in the culinary department. Prior to starting the culinary
program at the Louis Riel Arts and Technology Centre, Doris was a student at
ÉESS and will be returning in 2017 to complete her grade 12.
“Captain Angela Chamberlin”
Andreas Oertel, author of the Shenanigan Series, named a character in his third novel of the
series, Trouble at Impact Lake, after one of our teachers, Mrs. Chamberlin. In the book ,her
character is called Captain Angela Chamberlin.
Mrs. Chamberlin created questions for Andreas’ first book of the series, History in the Faking. Mrs. Chamberlin’s grade 7 class is currently reading the first book, and Andreas has
already made an appearance in the classroom and will be coming back to discuss the book,
his writing techniques, and to get feedback from the students.
OPPORTUNITIES
Interested in Summer Band Camp? From August 8-12, Manitoba Band Association holds a
Summer Band Camp in Oakbank at Springfield
Middle School for Woodwind, Brass, or Percussion students. For more information on this
fun filled week, check out the MBA website or
email Ms. Lamb. Partial scholarships are available for students who attend!
