Cross country athletes from Grade 6-9 participated in this year's Milk Run on October 1st, which was put on by Athletics Manitoba and sponsored by the Dairy Farmers of Manitoba. As a school, we sent 24 students who spent many lunch hours training with new coach, community member Todd Baranoski. He has been a competitive distance runner for many years and has brought passion and excitement into the ÉESS cross country program. Most runners confirmed to themselves that their practices were worthwhile as they looked strong running up all those hills. Times were recorded by coach Baranoski, to be used for hard training ahead as the students prepared for their next races. Our Grade 7 boys team won the Milk Run Banner, a great achievement. On October 5th, our High School teams competed in the zone 13 championship. Our girls team, led by a third place finish by Katriana Usipiuk, placed second in the team category. Our boys team, led by captain Justice Kitchen and his first place finish won the team banner. Our high school teams weren't done yet. Another week of training was needed before their toughest test. On October 14th, our high school teams travelled to Spruce Woods Forest, the site of the 2015 High School Provincial Cross Country Championships. The hilly course would defeat the boys on this day. The boys team finished in 4th place in the team category. Individual results and placing were strong considering there was just under 300 boys in their race! To have five of our boys place in the top 120 was impressive. The girls race was fast. With175 girls lined up at the starting line, it was an intimidating scene. Our girls persevered and ran strong races. The constant elevation change was most definitely a challenge but it also revealed that the training led by coach Baranoski was paramount in their success. The girls team surprised us with a second place finish in the team category, only losing 1st place by 19 points. Katriana placed Left to Right: Jenna Scott, Katriana Usipiuk, Julia Armstrong, 16th overall, the best placed grade 9 athlete from ÉESS in 15 years. Congratulations Mya Laderoute, Tamra Spooner High School Cross Country athletes! October 15th marked the day that our middle years students got their chance to shine. They were eager to get back to racing ever since their successes at the Milk Run two weeks ago. The event was held at Pope's Hill in Bird's Hill Park. Schools from around Sunrise School Division attended. Led by countless personal best runs and many impressive individual performances, the ÉESS middle years cross country team placed 1st in the grade 6 and grade 7 category, and placed 2nd in the grade 8 category. Top runners include: Grade 6 Girls Grade 7 Girls Grade 8 Girls 1st place Jzraelyne Kopp 2nd place Isabel Baranoski 6th place Lisha Lee 2nd place Bethany Wielgosh 4th place Hélène Trudeau 12th place Madi Tabin Grade 6 Boys Grade 7 Boys Grade 8 Boys 4th place Mika Feilberg 2nd place Alex Byra 1st place Justin Kroeker 8th place Tanner Sanders 4th place Mason Cameron 2nd place Carter Fuerst WHOLE SCHOOL NEWS Costumes and Props Needed…. We raised $5620 to help cover the costs of a cardiac heart monitor for the Beausejour Hospital. The students created displays to show the things they do in taking care of the earth and the people we share it with. The community showed their support by registering and test driving new Ford vehicles. On Friday October 16, the Beausejour Chamber of Commerce held their first annual Dragon’s Den in the school’s auditorium. Congratulations to the ÉESS Cheerleaders who won first place ($1433.75) for crowd favorite. SENIOR YEARS NEWS Starting the Conversation: Mental Health Some Facts 50-70% of mental illnesses develop before the age of 18 Anxiety disorders affect approximately 10-20% of youth Suicide accounts for 24% of deaths amongst 15-24 year olds 67% of people suffer in silence fearing judgment and rejection Positive mental health is vital, not only for school success, but for a successful life in general. The statistics above only offer a glimpse into the magnitude of the issue. Reducing stigma associated with mental illness and encouraging those who are suffering in silence to come out and get help are two pressing matters that must be dealt with now—for the sake of our children and our community. As individuals, and as a community, what are we doing to enhance mental health awareness and support those suffering from mental illness? What do we know about the various mental illnesses—and what do we need to know? How are we encouraging our children and young people to seek the help they need? For more information on Mental Health, visit the Canadian Mental Health Association at http:// www.cmha.ca/ For families looking for help in dealing with mental illness, visit: http://www.heretohelp.bc.ca/ workbook/family-toolkit Please contact the Student-Services team at ÉESS if you are concerned about the mental health of a young person in your life. MIDDLE YEARS NEWS Remembrance Day Trip This Remembrance Day, six ÉESS students from Grades 7 & 8 will have the opportunity to participate in a unique experience. While in Ottawa, along with the ceremony, the group will be visiting the Canadian Museum of History, Beechwood Cemetery, the Parliament Buildings, the Supreme Court of Canada, and the Canadian War Museum. We are all very excited to be going and are looking forward to sharing our travel experience upon our return! Student Council News The last week of October was Spirit Week and the We Scare Hunger campaign. Classes are competing to see who has the most school spirit and which grades can collect the most food for the Beausejour Food Bank. On Tuesday, October 27, Colin Mathieson, para-olympian, spoke to the middle year students in regards to the importance of team work and having people around who can support you, and overcoming obstacles. Thank you to the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) for sponsoring Colin to attend our school. (Visit the following for more details on Colin: http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/local/lifetime-of-chasing -dreams-207157361.html) On Thursday October 29, the students had a sock hop that was put on by Senior Year Students, Brayden Sjoberg, Kyle Stanley and Caiden Pearce. Thank you to all of them for volunteering their time. It is greatly appreciated. Future events that Student Council has planned: Manitoba Theatre for Young People will be coming to perform a powerful story of courage and perseverance. The Power of Harriet T is based on the story of Harriet Tubman, who fled slavery and risked her life to help others find safe haven in Canada via the Underground Railroad. Harriet believed that if she could escape, others could too, and she worked with the network. For Your Information... Manitoba Public Insurance DRIVER EDUCATION & TRAINING INFORMATION Please find registration information for the upcoming Driver Education term included below. Where can students go for registration information? Once Driver Education courses are finalized, they are published on the Driver Education Course Finder on the Manitoba Public Insurance website (http://apps.mpi.mb.ca/DL/CourseFinder.aspx) When does registration for the upcoming term begin? Registration for the Winter/Spring 2016 term (includes courses with a start date between Jan 1 and June 30) will be available at the start of business on November 16, 2015. Courses will be available on Course Finder for students and parents to view on November 12, 2015. How does reciprocity and the Student Admittance form work? Students are grouped in one of two registration phases based on their reciprocity (determined by which students a host school allows into their courses): Primary (usually reserved for students attending the host school) - Students in this group may register for courses as soon as registration is available. For the upcoming term, primary registration runs from November 16, 2015 to December 13, 2015. Secondary (open to students from other schools or divisions as determined by the host school) - Students in this group may register for courses four weeks after the course has been available to the primary group. For the upcoming term, secondary registration runs from December 14, 2015 to the course start date. The Student Admittance Form is only given out by a host school to a student who is not included in the school’s reciprocity (meaning the student is not included in their primary or secondary registration phase). Student Admittance forms cannot be used to bypass primary registration phase. If you choose to issue a form before secondary registration opens, the student must wait until the secondary registration phase begins to register.
