Estacada
Projecting-Sign Project — what is it?
In an effort to make downtown
more ”pedestrian friendly,” the
Estacada Development Association
has launched a program to help
businesses fund large projecting
signs that are clearly visible from
the sidewalk.
The Dog Days of
August
“As walkers you often have to go
out in the street to see what the
business name is...This will help
you from having to do that,” said
Main Street Manager, Gloria
Polzin. “The whole point for
projecting signs like this is for
walkers...and we’re trying to make
this a more walking friendly
community.”
The association received $4,000
from Estacada’s Urban Renewal
District Fund for the program.

apply with a mock-up of the sign
they want, a cost proposal and two
bids.
The panel will evaluate the
applications and reimburse eligible
businesses for half the cost to
purchase and install the sign, up to
$300.
Polzin expects that the
association will be enable to
contribute funds for about a
dozen business signs.
Business owners will have to
apply for and pay the Estacada
City sign fee on their own.
The association will only award
funds to business owners whose
sign proposals meet all provisions
of the city’s code. — http://

Applications are due by Nov. 1.
In the next couple of weeks
Polzin plans to handout
information packets to businesses
about the sign program.
There also will be an
informational workshop about
projecting signs; and the
application process at 6 p.m.
Monday, Aug. 26, in the City
Council chambers.

Downtown Sign Program Guidelines
Purpose
This program
will assist
businesses
with
improving
pedestrian
signage.
The purpose of this program
is to increase business by
encouraging pedestrians
to explore and shop in our
downtown. Good signage
will foster a pedestrian
friendly downtown
atmosphere by providing
business signage that is
readily visible from the
sidewalk rather than from the
street. With projecting signs,
pedestrians can stand on the
sidewalk and see where each
business is located without
going back into the street or
driving a car. Projecting signs
on all businesses in the
downtown area will indicate
the location to businesses as
far away as a block or so. In
addition, projecting signs
permit use of trees in the
streetscape which is
pedestrian friendly. Pictures
of projecting signs are
attached.
The Estacada Development
Association has received a
grant of $4,000 from the
Estacada Urban Renewal
District to fund this program.

Goal
The program will be

through June 2014. Preference

downtown area that meet the
eligibility criteria. There is an
application cut-off date of
November 1, 2013, after which
EDA will determine the
successful grant applications.
Applications received after this
date may be considered by
EDA if money remains in the
budget.
Businesses within the Estacada
Downtown Area, as defined by the
Urban Renewal District, that are
built directly adjacent to sidewalks
are eligible for this program.
Limitations
Signs must project perpendicularly
from the front of businesses and
meet all provisions of the City’s
Code. No sign shall be greater than
36 inches wide and 24 inches high.
