Head Coach Bill Morgan
BILL MORGAN
-
HEAD COACH
FIRST SEASON - 24TH OVERALL
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY/TRACK AND FIELD
FIELD/MULTI-EVENTS
Bill Morgan is in his first season as head coach of the Connecticut women’s track and field program, after serving as an assistant
coach for 22 years and as interim head coach this past season. He specializes with coaching in the field events and multi-events, for
which he has gained a national reputation for excellence after guiding numerous UConn athletes to national, collegiate and Olympic
Trials successes. Morgan was an assistant coach during the BIG EAST Conference Championships of 1986 and 1995 along with 23
New England Championships. His total of 131 conference champions includes 23 ECAC, 63 New England and 45 BIG EAST titles.
There were many highlights during his interim head coaching position in 2003-2004. Morgan’s cross country team placed 4th of 41
teams at the New England Championship for its best finish in nine years. The squad placed eighth out of 14 at the BIG EAST and took
11th out of 36 teams at the NCAA Regional Championship, both five-year bests for the Huskies.
His indoor track and field squad captured the New England Championship while placing sixth out of 44 teams at the ECAC Championships. Nicola Hines became Morgan’s first “track” conference champion as she won the 500-meter at the New England Indoor
Championships and also coached April Garner to the New England and ECAC Championships in the hurdles. The season concluded
with six individual conference champions, two school records and an All-American. The outdoor season proved to be just as exciting.
Morgan produced two conference champions in the discus and the high jump, three NCAA regional qualifiers and an Olympic Trials
qualifier while adding three school records.
During his tenure at Connecticut, Morgan has coached nine All-America performers to 18 All-America titles, the most recent being
Deirdre Mullen during the indoor and outdoor campaign in 2003-04. Morgan also coached Nicole Toney in the triple jump in 2001 and
NCAA Runner-Up Tamika Toppin in the high jump. Prior to that, he coached Toppin in the high jump (1998 and 1999), Bethany Hart
(1999 and 2000) and Wendy Berutto (1997) in the hammer throw, long jumpers Carol Galloway (1985) and Cheryl Brantle (1992), Terry
Roy in 1992, 1993 and 1995, and high jumper Ronna Deffer, an NCAA National Outdoor Championship finalist in 1992.
Morgan’s athletes have taken part in four Olympic trials. In July of 2000, he accompanied Hart and Toppin to the U.S. Olympic Trials
in Sacramento where Hart was the top collegian in the competition. The duo was his fourth and fifth student-athletes to qualify for the
trials. He also coached Roy, Brantle and Berutto to the U.S. Olympic Trials in Atlanta in June of 1996, Roy to the 1992 trials in New
Orleans and most recently in 2004, Mullen to the trials in Sacramento, Calif.
In 2004, Mullen became his second national team member as she participated in the NECAC Under-23 Championships in Sherbrooke,
Canada. One of Morgan’s former athletes, three time All-American Terry Roy, also became the Junior National Champion in the
heptathlon while participating in the World Junior Championships in Korea. Morgan’s work with Amy Parkosewich moved her from a
freshman walk-on to an NCAA outdoor qualifier and nationally ranked discus thrower during her career at UConn.
Morgan has taken part in the USA Track and Field Women’s Junior Elite Throws Camp in San Diego as well as the USA Track and
Field Women’s Elite Heptathlon Summit in Tucson,
Arizona, along with All-American Roy. He has also written published articles on topics related to imagery in
sport. In 2002, Morgan was acknowledged as an
AFLAC National Assistant Coach of the Year for distinguished service at the University of Connecticut.
Morgan presently resides in Storrs. He recently retired after 30 years of public school teaching; 29 of
those in the Columbia School District as a physical
education instructor. Horace W. Porter School was
recognized as the only school in the state to have received the Outstanding Achievement Award on the Connecticut State Physical Fitness Assessment Mastery
Test for an unprecedented six straight years. Morgan
was an undefeated coach at Porter School for five
years, going 51-0 in dual meet competition. Among
the many age-group athletes he has coached, Morgan
developed three national champions in the shot put,
discus and pentathlon. Morgan received his Bachelor
of Science degree in health and physical education
from Southern Connecticut State University in 1972
and received his master’s degree from SCSU in the
same field of study in 1973. In 1986, he received an
Head Coach Bill Morgan (Right) with Assistants Clive Terrelonge and Kim McGreevy
advanced degree in sport biomechanics from UConn.

Assistant Coach Kim McGreevy
- 2000 OLYMPIC TRIALS COMPETITOR -
KIM MCGREEVY
- ASSISTANT COACH - FIRST SEASON
- WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY/TRACK AND FIELD
- CROSS COUNTRY/MID & LONG DISTANCE
As a Coach...
Kim McGreevy is in her first year as the Assistant

After nine years at Penn State, where she was a
student-athlete and a coach, McGreevy brings a
wealth of experience and enthusiasm to the Husky
staff. McGreevy is responsible for cross country and
the middle distance/distance events and looks to build
a distance corps that is competitive in the BIG EAST,
contributing to the program’s dominance in the conference.
While coaching at Penn State, McGreevy worked
within the staff that rebuilt the program into a Big
Ten Conference powerhouse. In addition, she earned
her master’s degree and ran as a professional athlete during her tenure on the staff.
As a Post-Collegiate Athlete...
As a post-collegiate athlete, McGreevy was sponsored by the New York Athletic Club. Most notably, she competed in the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 1500-meter run and represented the United States in the 2001

the 5000-meter.
As a Student Athlete...
McGreevy was a standout performer in her collegiate career at Penn
State, highlighted by being named Penn State Female Athlete of the
Year in 1997. After winning the Big Ten Cross Country Championship in
1996, she was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Year in that sport. She

the distance medley relay (indoor – 1996), the mile (indoor – 1997),
and the 1500-meter (outdoor – 1997). Succeeding also in the classroom, McGreevy was an Academic All-America selection.

- ASSISTANT COACH - FIRST SEASON
- WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY/TRACK AND FIELD
- SPRINTS/HURDLES
As a Coach...
Clive Terrelonge is in his first season as an Assistant
Women’s Track and Field Coach. Terrelonge served as
a volunteer assistant sprints/hurdles coach for Brown
University’s track and field program from 2002-2004. He
helped guide the team from the middle of the pack in the
Ivy League in 2002 to a second place finish in 2004.
Over those two years, his sprinters broke two school
records that stood for over ten years in the 100-meter
dash and the 110-meter hurdles. In 2004, the team had
its first women’s Ivy League 100-meter champion in over
six years. All sprinters and hurdlers achieved personal

state champion in the 400-meter and a Class S state
champion in the 600-meter.
On the track, the middle distance/distance corps
welcomes several new faces to an already talented
group. Most notably in the middle distances, freshman Sara Fisher (Houston, Texas), who was a threetime state finalist and nationally ranked in the 800meter, and nationally-ranked relay (Burnt Hills H.S.)
anchor Emily Lewek (Scotia, N.Y.) will make an immediate impact.
Rolling out of the cross country season, Kristen
Meyer will look to crush her personal records on the
track at 3000-meter and 5000-meters, putting her in
a position to vie for BIG EAST honors. High school
All-American steeplechaser Maxine Davila will
branch out to the mile/1500-meters, and Niamh
Cunningham will represent the Huskies at 10,000meters. The event group will be rounded out by a
wealth of cross country talent that is fresh from a strong
fall campaign.
Horizontal Jumps
Clark’s immediate contribution should be felt in the
long jump as a two-time member of the Australian
Youth Olympic Squad and participant in the National
Underage Championships. The triple jump will be a
viable event and along with Highsmith, the two provide a great one-two punch.Rogers should improve
in this area after her initial year of training as well.

in her first Olympic Trials. Having jumped 6’2” outdoors, her rise on the national scene has been remarkable and her leadership invaluable. She will also
serve as mentor as the multi-talented Highsmith

Throws
With the graduation of NCAA participant Amy
Parkosewich, the team looks to the sophomore class
to fill the void. Leading the group will be Canadian
National Under-23 team member Daisy
VanRavenswaay (Canfield, Ont.). VanRavenswaay
set new freshman records in all throwing events, both
indoor and outdoor, while entering the top five alltime in shot put and discus. After redshirting the outdoor season, she looks to begin her ascent toward
national recognition. Classmates Allison Booth
(Shelby, Ohio) and Cassandra Buckwalter (New
Wilmington, Pa.) will provide outstanding depth with
expected break-out years. Booth had a team-best
mark of 13.92 meters (45-8.00) in the shot put during the outdoor season last year. Also look for newcomer Christine Matteis (Wallingford, Conn.) to develop for the shot put and discus.
With a program history of national caliber hammer
throwers, the Huskies only had to go across the border to attract the nation’s leading no. 20 weight and
hammer thrower. Erin Donnelly (Barrington, R.I.) will
contribute immediately and attempt to surpass 2004
Olympic Trials participant and graduate Bethany
Hart’s record performances.
If there is an area of “high” expectations for the Huskies, it will be in the high jump. Deirdre Mullen returns for an outdoor season after a stellar four-year
run of winning every conference championship, setting both school records, ranking nationally, compet-

2003-04 Review
CROSS COUNTRY
The University of Connecticut women’s cross country team
enjoyed many individual and team successes over the course
of the 2003 season, capped by an 11th-place team finish out
of 36 teams at the NCAA Northeast Region Championship.
The Huskies began their season with an outstanding performance, as they swept all three top spots and placed six runners in the top eight on their way to the team title at the Central Connecticut State Cross Country Invitational. UConn
earned just 19 points to take first among the nine-team field,
while the next-closest competitor Syracuse followed well behind with 76 points. UConn junior Kristen Meyer (Hillsborough,
N.J.) led the way for all runners, finishing with the top individual time of 18:02. She was followed by two Huskies in
second and third place. Senior Allison McCabe (Reading,
Mass.) was the runner-up with a time of 18:28.2, followed by
freshman Kyle MacQueen (Woodstock, Conn.) who made an
impressive debut for UConn with a time of 18:32.6 to finish
third.
In their second meet of the season, the team took fourth
place of 10 teams at the Boston College Select Meet. Meyer
led the way once again, placing seventh in a time of 18:06.
Also finishing in the top 10 for UConn was McCabe who placed
ninth with a time of 18:20.
With another strong showing, the team placed second of
nine teams at the CCSU Ted Owens Invitational, led by Meyer
who placed second with a time of 17:56. MacQueen also
finished in the top five, placing fifth with a time of 18:32. At the
Quinnipiac Invitational the following weekend, the Huskies finished sixth out of nine teams, and were led by Eileen O’Connor
(Suffield, Conn.) who finished 18th in a time of 20:09. In the
same weekend, UConn sent another group of runners to the
Iona Meet of Champions, where the team placed 10th out of 20
teams. Meyer finished eighth in the 6,000-meter race with a
time of 22:11.
Meyer led the team to a fourth-place finish among 41 teams
at the New England Championships. The finish was the best
for the Huskies in the past nine years at the championships.
Placing in the top 10 for UConn was MacQueen with a seventh-place finish in a time of 18:07, which is the fastest time
for a freshman in the history of the program at UConn.
Meyer’s 18th-place finish at the BIG EAST Championship
helped lead the team to an eighth-place finish among 14 teams
at Van Cortlandt Park. With a notable performance for the
Huskies, MacQueen was the highest-placing freshman at the
meet with a time of 22:00 to finish 23rd. Also scoring points
for UConn were Julie LaFrano (Loudonville, N.Y.), McCabe and
Jillian Sullivan (Bristol, Conn.).
In the final meet of the season, the NCAA Northeast Region
Championship, MacQueen was the top runner for UConn, leading the squad to an 11th place finish of out 36 teams at the
NCAA Northeast Region Championship. She finished the
course in 22:32 to place 45th out of the 241 runners, and
placed fifth among all freshmen running the race. Meyer placed
63rd with a time of 22:53, and rounding out the scoring for
UConn was Sullivan, McCabe, LaFrano and Niamh
Cunningham (Branford, Conn.).
2004-05 UCONN WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD/CROSS COUNTRY
INDOOR
The 2003-04 University of Connecticut women’s track and
field indoor season began with a bang on December 6 as
Deirdre Mullen (Princeton, N.J.) qualified for the NCAA Indoor
Nationals in the very first meet of the season at Brown. Mullen
won the high jump at the meet with a mark of 1.83 meters (60) in what was the beginning of an extremely successful season for her and the team. At the Alden Invitational, the Huskies won six of the 18 events that day including an impressive
win in the shot put by freshman Daisy VanRavenswaay
(Canfield, Ontario) in her debut meet, and a win in the 55meter hurdles by April Garner (Temple Hills, Md.) in a time of
8.19 to mark the sixth-best all-time performance at UConn.
Garner followed that up with a school-record performance in
the same event at the team’s next meet, the Yale Invitational
on January 11. Garner’s time of 7.93 broke the record set by
former Husky and All-American Tamika Toppin in 2001. UConn
took four individual wins that day, including repeat wins by
Mullen in the high jump, VanRavenswaay in the shot put and
Amy Parkosewich (Bethlehem, Conn.) in the weight throw.
Kristen Meyer (Hillsborough, N.J.) rounded out the group of
winners with a first-place finish in the 3000-meter run in a time
of 10:14.24.
The following weekend saw the Huskies compete at the Army
Invitational in their first team-scoring meet, which they won by
earning 75 more points than the next-closest competitor. Garner had a huge meet, winning all four events she competed in:
the 60-meter dash, the 60-meter hurdles, the 200-meter dash
and the 4x400-meter relay. UConn dominated their foes for a
second-straight week when they won the URI Invitational on
January 23 with 203 points- 50 more than second-place Yale.
The Huskies took first in six events, including a first-time win
for freshman Jennifer Rogers (Parksville, B.C.) in the 400-meter
dash.
Mullen won her fifth individual title of the season in the high
jump with a school-record mark of 1.86 meters (6-1.25) at the
Adidas Boston Indoor Games, helping lead UConn to a thirdplace finish among the 13 teams at the meet. The mark for
Mullen was also an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Indoor
Championship and at the time, ranked as the second-best
jump in the country. Allison McCabe (Reading, Mass.) was
another winner for the Huskies in Boston, taking first in the
1,000-meter run with a time of 2:55.26. The meet proved extremely close among the top three teams with UConn finishing just 1.33 points behind first-place Northeastern and just
one point behind second-place South Florida. In the week
following the meet, Mullen received her second ECAC Women’s
Field Athlete of the Week honor.
The Huskies returned to their winning ways at the second
URI Invitational, taking first among the 12 teams represented.
Seven first-place finishes sealed the deal for UConn, including
two wins by Garner and a win by Kiley Margolis (Trumbull,
Conn.) in the 1,000-meter run with a career-best time of 2:54.65,
which qualified her for the ECAC, New England and BIG EAST
Championships. The team’s next meet, the St. Valentine’s
Invitational hosted by Boston University, saw UConn earn 17
top-10 finishes. Parkosewich was the lone individual winner,
18
2003-04 Review
continuing with her success in the weight throw.
From Boston, it was off to the BIG EAST Indoor Championships hosted by Syracuse University on February 21-22.
Parkosewich had a successful showing on the first day of
competition with a fifth-place finish in the weight throw, and
also earned fifth place on day two in the shot put. Mullen
capped off the meet for UConn on day two by successfully
defending her title in the high jump. As a team, the Huskies
recorded a total of nine top-10 finishes and finished in 10th
place among the 14 teams.
The Huskies followed up the BIG EAST meet with their third
title in four years at the New England Indoor Championships.
Mullen remained undefeated in the high jump, and UConn also
earned wins from Garner and Nicola Hines (Bridgeport, Conn.),
and a personal-best performance from Parkosewich in the
weight throw with a mark of 18.49 meters (60-8) which ranked
as the second-best mark all-time at UConn.
UConn’s final meet as a team during the indoor season saw
them record their second-best finish in 12 years at the ECAC
Championships. The Huskies tied for sixth out of 44 teams at
the meet, with Mullen and Garner both taking individual titles
in their usual events. Mullen’s win earned her a third consecutive ECAC title, and Garner set a school record in the 60meter hurdles with a time of 8.43. The time for Garner was a
provisional NCAA qualifier, but did not ultimately earn her a
chance to compete.
Mullen was UConn’s representative at the NCAA Indoor
Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. on March 12-13, and she
did not disappoint, as she earned her third All-America honor
with a third-place jump of 1.86 meters (6-1.25).
OUTDOOR
Many team and individual successes marked the 2004 University of Connecticut women’s track and field outdoor season, culminating in the record-tying fourth All-American honor
for Deirdre Mullen (Princeton, N.J.). Mullen broke her personal record in the high jump several times over the course of
the season, doing it for the first time in the first outdoor meet
at the Miami Invitational. She won the event and was joined in
the winner’s circle by April Garner (Temple Hills, Md.) who
took first in the 100-meter hurdles.
UConn’s second meet took them to the Dick Shea Open
hosted by Army, which was a non-scoring meet. The Huskies
earned six first-place finishes, and both Garner and Amy
Parkosewich (Bethlehem, Conn.) were double winners for
UConn. Garner took wins in both the 100-meter hurdles and
the 200-meter dash, while Parkosewich recorded wins in both
the hammer throw and the discus. Mullen not only won the
high jump at the meet, but set a school record with a mark of
1.86 meters (6-1.25). Nicola Hines (Bridgeport, Conn.) took
first place in the 400-meter dash to round out the winners for
UConn.
The undefeated season in invitational meets began on April
3 when the Huskies hosted the UConn Invite #1, and took first
place by earning 164 more points than second-place
Dartmouth. The team recorded 15 first-place finishes in the
19 total events, and Garner, Hines and Parkosewich all earned
multiple victories. UConn defeated four more opponents the
following weekend at the Wildcat Invitational, winning four
events and recording a total of 16 top-three finishes. One
highlight for UConn was freshman Jillian Sullivan, who took
third in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time good enough
to qualify for the BIG EAST Championships. Some team members competed at the SeaRay Relays in the same weekend,
including Mullen who took first in the high jump by beating out
some strong competition such as UConn’s former four-time
All-American Tamika Toppin. For her efforts, Mullen was
named the ECAC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week for the
third time in the indoor and outdoor seasons. Also at the
SeaRay Relays, seniors Allison McCabe (Reading, Mass.)
and Kiley Margolis (Trumbull, Conn.) recorded personal-bests
and BIG EAST qualifying times in the 1500-meter run.
The Huskies improved their overall record to 17-0 on April 17
at the UConn Invite #2. Parkosewich took the top spot in
three events, while Mullen won the high jump. Michelle Beamon
(Peabody, Mass.) took first in the pole vault and Niamh
Cunningham (Branford, Conn.) won the 10,000-meter run.
UConn earned 171 points to win the meet, while Brown finished in second place with 145 points. Parkosewich was
impressive in the hammer throw with a personal-best and NCAA
qualifying mark of 56.20 meters, and was named the ECAC
Women’s Co-Field Athlete of the Week for her performances
at the Invite. She went on to win the discus throw at the Yale
Invitational the following weekend with a school-record mark.
The Huskies recorded five wins in the non-scoring meet.
The BIG EAST Championships were next on the schedule
for UConn, which had some strong individual success from
Parkosewich who set another school record en route to winning the discus. UConn placed 11th out of 47 teams at the
ECAC Championships on May 16, and school records were
set by both Garner and Parkosewich. The records would stand
for the remainder of the season for both athletes, with
Parkosewich recording a mark of 52.86 meters (173-5) in the
discus, and Garner running a record time of 13.60 in the 100meter hurdle preliminaries. Mullen earned an ECAC title in
the high jump with a mark of 1.83 meters (6-0).
The trio of Garner, Parkosewich and Mullen then traveled to
the NCAA East Regional Championships, where the latter two
earned a spot at the NCAA Championships. Parkosewich
placed fifth in the discus at the regional to qualify, and Mullen
broke her own school record by clearing 1.88 meters (6-2) to
place second at the meet and advance to the championships.
Once there, Mullen earned her record-tying fourth All-American honor by finishing sixth in the high jump despite an injury
on an earlier jump. Parkosewich fell short of her personalbest in the discus and placed 26th, but her appearance at the
meet capped off a hugely successful career for the senior.
Mullen, although a senior in 2003-04, will have one more outdoor season to compete after sitting out the 2003 outdoor
season.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT
John Miceli
The University of Connecticut’s Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes (CPIA) was established in 1986
to provide comprehensive academic support to all UConn student-athletes. CPIA’s staff includes a director, seven
full time counselors, four graduate assistants, and a large complement of tutors. The program boasts its own
computerized writing lab with access to the internet as well as the reference tools of the Homer Babbidge Library.
The program also provides laptop computers for team use during travel to away games. Individual tutors in all
subjects are readily available to student-athletes upon their request.
A CPIA counselor is assigned to each intercollegiate team. He or she monitors student-athlete academic
performance, counsels individuals regarding major/career options, facilitates registration in courses that
accommodate practice times while optimizing progress toward a degree, coordinates tutor requests and
assignments, and assists in development of study and time management skills. CPIA counselors also provide
individual referrals to other University support programs including Career Services, Counseling Services, and the
University Program for the Learning Disabled (UPLD). Finally, CPIA counselors work in connection with the
student-athletes’ major advisors to ensure that each student-athlete makes optimal progress toward his or her
degree.
SPORTS MEDICINE
ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT
The Department of Sports Medicine in the University of Connecticut Division of Athletics
works as an integrated multidisciplinary team whose purpose is to provide the optimal, safe
environment for the cross country/track and field student-athletes to train and participate in their
sport. The staff takes great pride in the individual attention paid to each student-athlete. They
are devoted to preventing injury, rapidly diagnosing and treating injury, and maximizing athletic
performance. The disciplines of athletic training, strength and conditioning, sports medicine,
orthopaedic sports medicine, optometry, nutrition, exercise physiology, and psychology work
in concert to provide comprehensive care for the student-athlete.
Physician coverage is provided by Jeffrey Anderson, MD, the Director of Sports Medicine and
Team Physician Thomas Trojian, MD. The Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Specialists for the
team include Edward Collins, MD, and Michael Joyce, MD, of the Connecticut Sports Medicine
and Orthopaedic Center in Willimantic, Barry Messinger, MD, of Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic
Surgery in Manchester, and Robert Arciero, MD, and Kevin Shea, MD, of the University of
Connecticut Health Center Department of Orthopaedics in Farmington.
The Department of Sports Medicine works intimately with the Departments of Kinesiology
and Nutritional Sciences on the University of Connecticut campus. This affords the studentathletes with the input of several nationally recognized exercise scientists. This cooperation
also keeps the sports medicine staff at the cutting edge of developments in the fields of
human performance and sports nutrition. Members of the sports medicine staff are actively
engaged in research that directly benefits the care of the cross country/track and field studentathletes.
The UConn Sports Medicine team is housed in state-of-the-art facilities in the Hugh S.
Greer Field House and the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion, as well as a new and expanded sports
medicine treatment center located in the UConn Football Facilities Building.
Mary Ryan is in her 21st year
working in the UConn Division of
Athletics.
In her tenure at Connecticut, Ryan
has worked for a variety of UConn’s
successful athletic programs,
including baseball, volleyball,
football, field hockey, ice hockey,
men’s and women’s track, women’s
soccer and men’s and women’s
swimming.
Before joining the athletic
department, Ryan worked for three
years in the college of agriculture at
Connecticut.
STRENGTH & CONDITIONING
The strength and conditioning program for the University of Connecticut Division of Athletics is under the supervision of UConn
Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Jerry Martin. The Strength and Conditioning staff services all 24 of Connecticut’s
intercollegiate teams.
UConn athletes have the use of two different weight rooms in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion and the newly remodeled Hugh S.
Greer Field House.
In all, there are over 8000 square feet of weight training facilities available for all UConn track and field athletes.
The weight room in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion is a free weight facility and supplies the Husky athletes areas in which to perform
their power and Olympic lifts. The facility in the Greer Field House is fitted with more free weights in which the UConn athletes
can incorporate circuit training, speed training and heavy negative workouts into their total strength training program.
Coach Bill Morgan organizes and implements specific event related programs for each track and field student-athlete. Each
program is manipulated in order to fulfill the specific needs of the individual. Specific programs are developed to monitor progress
in strength, power, anaerobic conditioning and flexibility. This format provides the coaches and medical staff with an accurate
athletic profile on each track and field athlete.

Athletic Development
We’re scoring big at UConn with the help of some extraordinary players. Although they have never set foot on our playing
fields, these team members give us something special, their support.
As members of The UConn Club and contributors to the UConn Athletic Development Fund, they are keeping the Husky
spirit alive.
The goals of The UConn Club and the UConn Athletic Development Fund are simply to provide financial support for
Connecticut’s 24 intercollegiate teams and some 600 student-athletes. When donors sign on with the Huskies, they’re making
an investment that will pay off in great seasons and outstanding student-athletes.
One of the many ways UConn Club members are helping is through the UConn Athletic Development Fund’s Endowed
Scholarship Program. In the 2004-2005 academic year, the University of Connecticut Division of Athletics will award many
endowed scholarships to benefit numerous Husky student-athletes.
The Mark R. Shenkman Training Center
Thanks to alumnus Mark R. Shenkman, the University of Connecticut will soon join the ranks of major
universities nationwide with an indoor training facility that will be utilized by all Husky teams and also by recreational services.
Shenkman’s $2.5 million gift, one of the largest ever to the UConn Division of Athletics, will help build an
intercollegiate, intramural and recreational facility that will serve the entire UConn community.
The 85,000 square foot Mark R. Shenkman Training Center will rival similar facilities at other large universities. Featuring a 120-yard long synthetic playing surface, an 18,000 square foot strength and conditioning area
and state-of-the-art video capabilities, the indoor training center will provide UConn’s teams with the most technologically advanced training equipment.
The University has contracted with the Hartford-based firm of Jeter, Cook and Jepson and with HOK Sport +
Venue + Event, an internationally-renowned architectural firm based in Kansas City, to provide architectural and
engineering services for The Mark R. Shenkman Training Center.
A resident of Greenwich, Conn, Shenkman graduated from the Wilbraham & Monson Academy in Wilbraham,
Mass. He received a bachelor’s degree in political science from UConn in 1965 followed by a master’s degree in
business administration from The George Washington University.
Shenkman is the founder and president of Shenkman Capital Management, Inc., a registered investment
advisor with offices in New York City and Stamford, Conn. He has served on the UConn Foundation’s Board of
Directors for eight years and has been a member of its investment committee. Shenkman was elected to the
UConn School of Business Hall of Fame in 2002 and has endowed a classroom and the e-Commerce Chair for
the business school.
Construction for The Mark R. Shenkman Training Center will take place in the winter of 2004, with the
opening slated for the summer of 2006.

The University of Connecticut was the “Home of Champions” during
the 2003-2004 academic year.
The most tangible evidence of this came on consecutive days in
early April when UConn won NCAA Championships in both men’s and
women’s basketball – becoming the first Division I school to win both
titles in the same year.
The moniker “Home of Champions” goes far beyond basketball —
and athletics for that matter. UConn student-athletes are champions on
the playing fields and courts, as well as in the classrooms and in the
community.
UConn teams advanced to NCAA Championship play in five different
sports this past year as the men’s and women’s basketball teams won
national championships, the women’s soccer team played in the national
final, the field hockey team advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals and
the men’s soccer team went to the second round of the NCAA
tournament.
Individuals from UConn participated in the NCAA men’s and women’s
indoor and outdoor track championships and the women’s swimming
championship.
UConn has now won an NCAA Championship in each of the past six
academic years dating back to 1998-99: 1999 men’s basketball, 2000
women’s basketball, 2000 men’s soccer, 2002 women’s basketball,
2003 women’s basketball and 2004 men’s and women’s basketball.
The 2003-2004 year was also highlighted with the opening of
Rentschler Field, the country’s newest and most modern college football
stadium. UConn posted a record of 5-1 in its new home and had an
overall record of 9-3.
Husky teams were successful on the BIG EAST level as the women’s
basketball, field hockey and women’s soccer teams all won BIG EAST
regular season titles. The men’s basketball team won the BIG EAST
tournament and the men’s indoor track and field team won the BIG
EAST Championship.
The men’s track and field team won the indoor New England
Championship for the 11th-straight year while the women’s indoor
team won it for the third time in the past four years.
A total of 10 Husky student-athletes won All-America honors this
past year: Maureen Butler in field hockey, Kristen Graczyk in women’s
soccer, Lauren Henderson in field hockey, Logan Jones in men’s indoor
track and field, Joel Legare in men’s outdoor track and field, Mary Jo
Malone in field hockey, Deirdre Mullen in both indoor and outdoor
women’s track and field, Emeka Okafor in men’s basketball, Diana Taurasi
in women’s basketball and Will Thomas in men’s indoor track and field.
UConn produced a pair of Academic All-Americans in Okafor, who
was also selected as the Academic All-American of the Year for men’s
basketball, and football’s Shaun Feldeisen, who earned second team
honors.
Both Okafor and Taurasi were honored as the national player of the
year in their respective sports.

A Husky Tradition of Excellence
In the UConn Division of Athletics,
there is a saying: “If we’re not going to
do it the right way, we are not going to
do it at all.”
That’s the attitude when in comes to
anything that happens in the Division
from its administrators, coaches and
student-athletes. There’s a tradition of
excellence at UConn that is fostered on
a continual basis.
The Huskies have won eight NCAA
national championships since 1990 –
five in women’s basketball, two in men’s
basketball and one in men’s soccer.
UConn has made NCAA semifinal
appearances 10 other times during that
period – including four in women’s
soccer, three in women’s basketball, two
in field hockey and one in men’s soccer.
In total, UConn teams have advanced
to NCAA Championship play 65 times
since 1990-91 while Husky studentathletes have garnered All-America
honors 142 times.
UConn teams have also won 40 BIG
EAST Conference regular season
championships during that time and 35
BIG EAST Tournament titles.
None of this success is possible
without great leaders and UConn has
had five different head coaches
recognized as national coaches of the
year in the past 13 years – Geno
Auriemma of women’s basketball, Jim
Calhoun of men’s basketball, Ray Reid
of men’s soccer, Len Tsantiris of
women’s soccer and Bruce Marshall of
men’s ice hockey.
The Division of Athletics – which now
boasts of over 150 full-time employees
– strives to help the University of
Connecticut grow, develop and improve
each and every day.
