Rocanville cross-country ski trails offer fun for all ages Whether you’re looking for sport, fellowship, exercise or an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors during a Prairie winter day, the Rocanville CrossCountry Ski Club fills your Nordic needs. Since 1995, when area resident Dennis Hack cleared some trails on his farm located two miles south of Rocanville, hundreds of cross-country ski enthusiasts have strapped on the boards and ventured into Saskatchewan’s winter landscape. Since then, the club has developed into an organization of around 55 members, while many more non-members also take to the nine-kilometre groomed track through the winter. Even those without skis are included. The Rocanville Cross-Country Ski Club’s clubhouse amenities provide everything you need for a day of skiing. The club has all different sizes of boots and skis for rent at low cost, and a wax station to prepare your skis for the day’s travel. Payment is based on the honor system. The clubhouse also has a wood stove for warmth, comfy chairs, and hot chocolate and marshmallows. The club’s trail system contains a variety of tracks, from flat easy-going paths to more challenging hills and coulees. The route winds through bush, providing shelter from a chilly winter breeze. And, because the club has a facility for all ages and skill levels, the whole family can get involved. While older children can make their first attempt at cross-country skiing, younger ones can be pulled behind an adult in a sled or toboggan. The club has been widening trails with their recently acquired 12-foot trail groomer; the wider trails mean people can ski classically (meaning you follow in a trail) or practice skate skiing. You can get more information from the club’s executive members or by calling the Rec Office in Rocanville. Winter Fun Guide 9 A game of shinny on Moosomin’s outdoor rink. Outdoor rink available in Moosomin In the town of Moosomin— where indoor ice time is quickly booked up by hockey, figure skating, and other events each season— there is an outdoor rink for people to enjoy during the winter months. Moosomin’s outdoor rink was built a few years ago as an answer to the lack of time for public skating and shinny at the Communiplex, 10 the town’s indoor arena. The outdoor rink is 160 by 170 feet and located in Bradley Park, just behind the Communiplex on the south end of town. Conceived, built, and maintained by volunteers, the ice is reserved for public skating and shinny, and was built with wind breaks so skaters are more comfortable on chilly days. There is also Winter Fun Guide a heated building on site for skaters to change into their skates or just warm up in. If there is an event on at the Communiplex, adjacent to the outdoor rink, there is a concession available inside the Communiplex for snacks and drinks. The outdoor rink in Moosomin is open to the public free of charge. Take a shot at archery BY KARA KINNA When people think of winter hobbies they rarely think of archery. But for members of the Fleming Archery Club, practicing their archery skills is a weekly event. The Fleming Archery Club is open to all members of the public. While there is no fee to try out the sport with the club, there is a nominal fee to become a member. Experience in archery is also not a requirement. “We’ve got some qualified trainers here who can teach people,” says Joe St. Onge, a member of the club. “The club also has some generic equipment for anyone to use.” The club meets every Thursday and Sunday to hold practice indoors in the basement of the McNaughton Building in Moosomin, and club members have 24-hour access to the practice area. Once the weather gets warmer, they move their sport outdoors. St. Onge says anyone is GREAT PRICES ON FURNITURE AND APPLIANCES START HERE! LOCAL SEARS CATALOGUE OUTLET welcome to come out and try their hand at the sport. The club practices all types of archery, and shoots at practice targets and paper targets. The club shoots all year round and holds a few clinics over the course of the year, as well as a large, outdoor archery shoot at Moosomin Regional Park at the end of May. St. Onge says archery is a sport that can be enjoyed by all ages. Some archers in the club have made great progress with the sport, and a number of students have done well at the provincial level. This year the club is offering a Junior Olympic Program for children and youth 18 and under. The JOP club offers two skills sets—one for youth who want to compete based on their own ability, and one for youth who want to compete based on age. The club holds its practices from 7-10 p.m. on Thursdays and from 1-4 p.m. on Sundays. Easton’s Autobody 3')!##2%$)4%$sMANITOBA ACCREDITED Glass & Windshield Repair & Replacement MGR. Featuring 25 runs, three lifts, and two terrain parks for free style skiing and snowboarding, serious boarders and skiers have lots to experience and explore. If you’re just starting out, the snow carpet—a moving sidewalk—on the bunny hill is perfect for beginners young and old. Or rent a snow tube and enjoy the three runs at the snow tubing park: ride up and slide down—no effort required! To keep everything fresh, the terrain parks are rearranged each season. For those not athletically inclined, there’s the Winter Village. The food court has lots of options, from fresh fruit smoothies to home- made burgers and fries, and the Powder Keg Pub has panoramic windows with a beautiful view, perfect for watching the night skiers fly down the lit runs while enjoying a cocktail. There are a number of fireside lounges, and shoppers can peruse the Trail’s End Gift Shop; in the basement there’s a full rental and pro shop, so you’ll be fully geared up for your day on the slopes. The resort features a number of annual events, several of which are designed especially with families in mind. A list of this year’s lineup is on the facing page, and you can check the website for additions and updates. Accommodations are available in the neighboring communities, and a contact list is available on the website at asessippi.com. Who says the prairies are flat? See you on the slopes! Snowmobilers can travel between Moosomin, Rocanville, Welwyn, St. Lazare, Spy Hill, Bear Creek and Tantallon and take in some of the area’s incredible winter scenery, including the Qu’Appelle, Pipestone and Assiniboine Valleys. The Tri Valley Trails Snowmobile Club has about 50 members, many of whom volunteer to maintain the trail network by clearing brush off the paths, putting up signs, and maintaining the warm-up shacks found along the route. The club owns a groomer, which is also run by volunteers and, at times, operates on a 24hour basis. The route is known throughout the Prairies for its quality, and riders from all over Canada Winter Fun Guide and beyond have travelled to the area to ride the trail. The annual derby will take place in late February or early March; up 80 to riders have been known to participate. Run out of Welwyn, the Community Recreation Organization of Welwyn provides a homemade dinner and supper before and after the four-to-six hour ride, and the event is a great social for all involved. Although membership is not required to enjoy the trail, those wishing to support the club and its work can purchase a membership by calling a member. More information on the Tri Valley Trails system can be found online at trivalleytrails.com. 23 Winter Fun Warm up with us at Boomerang’z this winter.
