Welcome
Welcome
One of the core QES Values is ‘developing global citizenship’ and
there is no better way to promote this than by life-changing trips
as a teenager to places far and wide. This fundraiser aims to help
that happen by supporting two projects – one in the arts and the
other in sport – designed to expand horizons and to have young
people experience different cultures, to meet new people and to
see new things.
QES is justifiably proud of a national reputation in the arts and we remain the only school in the UK
to participate in the Shakespeare Student Festival run by the prestigious Folger Library in Washington
DC. Previous sports tours to Australia have whetted the appetite for international competition and
shown how common physical endeavour can engender the kinds of respect, understanding and
friendship that it is hoped will emerge from the proposed trip to South Africa.
Both will be trips of a lifetime: the chance to meet the challenges of competition; to learn
independence; to experience different cultures; to make new friends across the globe; to appreciate
fully that differences are to be celebrated not feared.
Already our young people are learning to work as a team to raise money so that their forthcoming
experiences won’t just be handed to them but will be earned and deserved. We thank you for
your support not only with the generous financial contributions you make, but more profoundly in
supporting our belief that by creating rich and rewarding experiences for young people, we promote
in the next generation a respect and sense of responsibility for the world and its people.

Introduction
This evenings event offers a unique opportunity for Performing
Arts and Sport in the school to come together, for the proceeds
are to be shared between the drama trip to Washington in March
and the proposed Sports trip to South Africa in July 2013. The
P.E department has already run two successful rugby and netball
tours to Australia and are now arranging a similar tour to South
Africa.
The Washington Trip has been an important feature of the
schools Performing Arts programme since 1991 when, as
part of QES’s quartercentenary celebrations, we received an
invitation to take part in the Student Shakespeare Festival at the
prestigious Folger Shakespeare Library. This was intended
as a ‘“one-off” event, for the festival is only open to American students. However, they liked us, and we
certainly liked them, and what such a trip to the United States’ capital offered in terms of unrivalled cultural,
social and educational opportunities. We are also proud to be the only British school to participate in the festival
and are very conscious that we represent not only the school, but also the country. For the many Americans we
meet, London is no longer the only place they associate with the UK: Kirkby Lonsdale is England! And for us,
Washington DC and Annapolis, Maryland become well-loved parts of the United States.
The Student Shakespeare festival obviously is the mainspring of our trip, but having travelled three and a half
thousand miles, we make the most of our stay by visiting every major tourist site, museum and art gallery. We
are also extremely privileged to be given a special tour of the Capitol, the US centre of government. We also
spend a weekend in Annapolis, state capital of Maryland. Here, our students are guests of Broadneck High
School students with whom they get a chance to relax as typical American teenagers and also go into school
with them on Monday to experience first-hand a different education system.
The advantages of foreign school trips are invaluable. They offer young people at a formative age the chance to
widen their horizons, to experience a different culture and to become more independent of home whilst being in
the safe confines of a known group. Character building is also an important feature, for both sporting and drama
groups are teams and team members must learn how best to work together and to look out for each other.
Finally, why fundraise? The over-riding principle from our very first Washington Trip was that it should be open
to all; nobody was to be precluded because it was too expensive. Costs have therefore been kept down and
we subsidise our students by our own efforts, another excellent team building exercise. I am sure this is as
true for the Sports’ Tour as it is for us. So thank you all for supporting us this evening: you are helping two very
worthwhile causes.

Menu
As one of the beneficiaries of tonights fundraising are those students lucky enough to be travelling to
Washington DC -- and we are not terribly au fait with South African cuisine! -- we decided to give our menu an
American twist that we hope you will enjoy...
On the Tide
Salmon Fishcakes with dill
The students travelling to Washington will spend a weekend in Annapolis, Maryland. “Eat, drink and be Maryland” is the state’s motto and
seafood is their speciality. These fishcakes, made from a mix of poached salmon, smoked salmon and prawns and served with dill cream
sauce are a Maryland favourite.

Ronnie Irani
Hailing from the streets of Leigh, Greater Manchester,
Ronnie started his glittering cricket career with Lancashire
CCC, before moving to Essex in 1994. Having spent 13
successful years with Essex County Cricket Club, including
being given the honour of Captain and Essex Sportsman
of the Year, he made his England debut in 1996, making 31
one-day International appearances and playing in 3 test matches.
His first-class stats were incredible, making over 20,000 runs and taking
over 650 Wickets at an average of 41 and 29 respectively.
After injury forced him to retire from his first love, Ronnie quickly swapped the
bat for the microphone and his booming voice is now recognizable on talkSPORT, as
co-host of the Alan Brazil breakfast show, and as a presenter on Manchester United TV.
We welcome Ronnie to QES and look forward to spending the evening with him.
