Effective Black Parenting Program (EBPP): This program is a parent education program for parents / caregivers of African American youth ages 2-18, including teenage parents. This program is provided to the parents of the youth in the Africentric Youth and Family Rites of Passage Program as well as for parents of at risk youth in the community. Cognitive-Behavioral Interventions for Trauma in Schools (CBITS): The CBITS program is a group intervention for reducing youth’s symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), including depression and anxiety caused by exposure to violence. Evidence based and evidence informed services are accessible in the clinic, on mobile units out in the community, and at school sites across the county. The Riverside County Children and Families Commission, First 5 Riverside awarded funding to the Riverside County Department of Mental Health for a Mental Health Initiative (MHI) project, entitled, Set-4-School. Set-4-School provides a comprehensive continuum of early identification, early intervention, and treatment services designed to promote social competence and decrease the development of disruptive behavior disorders among children ages 0-5. Three Mobile PEI treatment units provide various interventions to children and families in select communities across all three regions of Riverside County. Services are provided to families who may not otherwise receive services due to transportation or other geographic barriers. Each vehicle additionally is equipped to function independently to support disaster relief centers in emergency situations. They are also used to provide community outreach, education, and linkage to services during functions such as health fairs, school events, and other community activities. All activities are intended to help to reduce stigma and provide positive outreach to families that may want help with their child’s social and emotional development in a community setting. Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)is treatment foryoung children which utilizes traumasensitive, developmentally appropriate play based interventions with young children who are experiencing significant emotional and behavioral difficulties related to traumatic life events. The Incredible Kids (IK)program includes research-based, proven effective interventions for reducing children's aggression and behavior problems and increasing social competence at home and at school. Both parent and child components are offered. Lastly, Positive Parenting Program (Triple P) offers anticipatory parental guidance made up of simple and practical strategies to help caretakers confidently manage their child’s behavior, prevent problems from developing, and build healthy relationships. A case manager meets with the client and completes a Family Needs Assessment. A Case Plan is then created based on the family’s needs. Information and referrals are provided and if necessary, assistance in accessing the services can also be provided by case managers. The case manager maintains contact with the client until the client and family exits The Kids 1st Program. Triple P Level 3—Accredited staff work individually with the parent/caregiver to provide brief behavioral counseling as an early detection and brief intervention approach to managing identified problems. This service is four sessions total. Triple P Level 4—This is a 9-session parenting program that incorporates sessions on causes of children’s behavior problems, strategies for encouraging children’s development, and strategies for managing misbehavior. Active skills training methods used in the sessions include modeling, rehearsal, self -evaluation, and homework tasks. Triple P Level 5—Accredited staff work individually with the parents/caregivers to provide mood management and stress coping skills for parents, and marital communication skills as required. This service can vary from 3 to 8 sessions. PCIT—Parent-Child Interaction Therapy is an evidence-based parent-child treatment program that assists parents of children with behavioral problems (aggression, non-compliance, defiance, and temper tantrums). Originally developed by Dr. Shelia Eyberg, PCIT is a unique treatment program that focuses on promoting positive parent-child relationships and interactions while teaching parents effective child management skills. It is designed to reduce emotional and behavioral problems that may interfere with children’s performance in school and in developing healthy, prosocial relationships with adults and peers. It focuses on the specific, age-related symptoms of mental illness in young people. In Our Own Voice: An interactive public education program in which two trained consumer speakers share their personal stories about living with mental illness and achieving recovery. Breaking the Silence: An educational package that teaches students in upper elementary school, middle school, and high school about mental illness. Seeking Safety Courage in Coping Skills Program This program is designed for people who have experienced a trauma or extremely stressful event(s), and who are experiencing problems due to these events. The program follows the evidence based model called Seeking Safety. The goal of the program are to empower the individual, build healthy coping skills, and reduce symptoms of trauma. RIVERSIDE COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF MENTAL HEALTH PARENT SUPPORT & TRAINING PROGRAM Parent Partners are hired to work in clinics with families and professional staff to assist in the planning and provision of treatment for children and families. This program is countywide and provides support, education, training, and resources to parents and primary caregivers who are raising a child with mental health/behavioral challenges. Some services and supports are available to parents/caregivers whether or not their child is receiving services. They are offered in English and Spanish and are free of charge. Services include, but are not limited to, support and educational groups, trainings relating to mental health, a parent-to-parent telephone support line, social events, mentorship for youth, limited respite, and a parent resource library. Children’s Mental Health Clinics provide services to children with severe emotional and behavioral problems. Staff works closely with schools to provide services to students who experience academic problems as a result of their severe emotional problems.
