Children traditionally find gifts next to their shoes on the 6th of January. Community members gather to show off their talents and leisure pursuits. A variety of hobbies will be represented and demonstrated to spark children’s interests and inspire them to get involved. Dr. Seuss Birthday Party Date: March 2 Time: 6:00 pm Ages: All ages Registration: Free, no registration. Join us for a party with games and stories celebrating the birthday of Theodore Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss. This is one of our biggest celebrations of the year! Kids will learn the importance of green living and protecting the environment. In the event of inclement weather, we will meet at the library. Kids are invited to join us for a fun holiday craft just in time for your special day. Special Valentine crafts will be created for kids to share with friends and family. Indoor Slingshot Date: February 23 Time: 6:00 pm Ages: 6 - 11 years Registration: Free, no registration. Learn how to make safe and fun slingshots, followed by games galore! Please bring an empty paper towel roll. All other materials will be provided. Magazine Art Workshop Date: May 12 Time: 4:00 pm Ages: 6 - 11 years Registration: Free, no registration. At the library, we love to recycle and make new treasures out of old or unwanted items. Kids are invited to come and enjoy a fun class exploring the use of magazines to make art. Tween/Teen Gaming Parties Minecraft Mania 1 Date: January 3, February 7, March 7 & May 2 Time: 2:30 pm Ages: 8 - 11 years Registration: Please register by the Friday before each event. Team up with us on the library’s own Minecraft server. We provide the laptops and access to the game, and you provide the creativity and fun. For those with a laptop and game license, feel free to bring your own and join the fun. Tween/Teen Makerspace Workshops What is a Makerspace? Makers are a collaborative community of all ages who share a passion for making things and who are engaged in experimentation, innovation and creativity. Our Makerspace merges DIY, craft, art, electronics, programming, math, science and engineering into projects for both young people and their mentors. Our goal is to support and grow the Maker movement in our local community through experimental play. We aim to encourage and enable young people to try new things, learn by doing and build the confidence that comes from guided problem solving. If you dream it, you can do it - at the public library. Makerspace: Learn to Code Date: January 15 Time: 5:30 pm Ages: 10 years & up Registration: Please register by January 14. Computer programming is fast becoming a basic foundational skill. Tweens are encouraged to join us in learning the basics of code while creating fun games and animations. No experience required! Makerspace: Stick Bombs Date: February 9 Time: 5:30 pm Ages: 10 years & up Registration: Please register by February 7. As part of our new makerspace, we’re learning how to mix mechanics with art. Come to our workshop and find out how to make exploding kinetic art. Amaze your friends! Makerspace: Learn to Solder, Part 1 Date: March 16 Time: 5:30 pm Ages: 12 years & up Registration: Please register by March 14. The foundations of electronic components are built on a handful of technical skills. We’ll help you learn to do-it-yourself. Join us in learning how to solder and make a fun LED pin. No experience required, and you’ll have your first electronics project under your belt! 6 Makerspace: Learn to Solder, Part 2 Date: March 19 Time: 5:30 pm Ages: 12 years & up Registration: Please register by March 18. Once you’ve mastered the first soldering project, take on some more advanced soldering skills. For those who’ve completed Part 1 or had experience with soldering. Makerspace: Arduino Basics Date: March 26 Time: 5:30 pm Ages: 12 years & up Registration: Please register by March 25. Continue learning the basics of soldering and explore the basics of the beginnerfriendly Arduino microcontroller. This is more advanced soldering for those who’ve completed Learn to Solder, Part 1 or have had experience with soldering. Makerspace: Duct-ivities Date: April 23 Time: 5:30 pm Ages: 10 years & up Registration: Please register by April 22. Our makerspace is all about making things from materials we all have lying around. Learn how to make all kinds of projects from that oh-so-versatile medium, duct tape! Makerspace: Stop Motion Date: May 11 Time: 5:30 pm Ages: 10 years & up Registration: Please register by May 9. For all of those up-and-coming animators and filmmakers, join us to learn how to set up and film short movies in stop motion. Feel free to bring miniatures or other items for props! Tween/Teen Arts and Crafts Hair Chalking Party Date: March 21 Time: 1:00 pm Ages: 12 years & up Registration: Please register by March 20. Come express your colorful personality! Celebrate the end of Spring Break by streaking your hair with temporary hair chalk. 7 Adult Library Activities Technology Classes The library offers free classes for the person who is new to using the computer, as well as the more advanced students or someone in between. To reserve your spot, please call 559-2970. Meet the Computer Date: March 26 & May 21 Time: 3:00 pm Ages: 18 years & up Registration: Please register by March 25 or April 30. Introduction to the parts of the computer, keyboard, vocabulary and just general knowledge to use the computer! This class is great for someone who has never used a computer before. Microsoft Excel Dates: Part I: January 13, March 3 & May 12 Dates: Part II: January 15, March 5 & May 14 Time: 5:30 pm Ages: 18 years & up Registration: Please register by the day before the class. Learn how to create and use spreadsheets. Students must be experienced in word processing. Microsoft Publisher Date: February 11 & April 28 Time: 3:00 pm Ages: 18 years & up Registration: Please register by February 10 or April 27. Learn the basics of layout and design for publications. Students must be experienced in word processing. Microsoft PowerPoint Date: February 3 Time: 5:30 pm Ages: 18 years & up Registration: Please register by February 2. In this course, you’ll discover new ways to make presentation slide shows. Once you’ve successfully “met” the computer, come learn the basics of word processing. Some knowledge of computers is necessary. Navigating the Web Date: January 23 & April 20 Time: 3:00 pm Ages: 18 years & up Registration: Please register by January 22 or April 18. Learn how to safely and successfully navigate the Internet. Some knowledge of basic computer function is recommended, but this is a class suitable for novice web users. Social Media Date: February 16 & May 18 Time: 3:00 pm Ages: 18 years & up Registration: Please register by February 14 or May 16. Learn how to make the most of free social media tools to stay connected to friends and family or promote your business or organization. Tech Talk for Seniors Date: January 2, February 6, March 6, April 10 & May 1 Time: 4:00 pm Ages: Adults Registration: Free, no registration. Learn how to use your new-fangled devices, from mobile phones to smart phones to tablets, laptops or digital cameras. This is a walk-in workshop for those who have questions about their devices. If you’re looking for ways to save money, go green and just generally be more handy, drop in on our workshops on a variety of topics including, couponing and budgeting, do-it-yourself cleaning and homemade beauty products. These informal meetings will be held on the last Monday of each month A.A.R.P. Free Tax Help Date: Mondays beginning February 2 through April 6 Time: 9:30 am – 12:30 pm Ages: All ages. You do not have to be a senior. Registration: First-come, first-serve. Volunteers from A.A.R.P. will prepare taxes for individuals and families free of charge. All income levels welcome. No businesses, please. Please bring all W-2s, Social Security Numbers for yourself and dependents, bank account information for direct deposit and last year’s tax return, if possible. 10 Oscar Movie Night Date: February 20 Time: 6:30 pm Ages: 13 years & up Registration: Please register by February 19. Join us for our 3rd annual celebration of all things Oscar on the Friday before the big awards. We’ll play trivia, have a screening of an Oscar-nominated movie and enjoy star-worthy refreshments. This 2nd annual event is free of charge for the public and celebrates communitybased interactive education. There will be a wide variety of informal sessions in which you can learn how to do all kinds of things, from container gardening to yoga to household repairs. National Poetry Month Poetry Contest Recital Date: April 30 Time: 6:00 pm Ages: 12 years & up Registration: Free, no registration. Are you a poet? Do you want everyone to know it? We’re asking for contributions to our 3rd annual poetry contest for middle school, high school and adult poets. Participants and winners are invited to share their work at an informal recital. Accident Insurance Refund Policy We make every effort to conduct the classes we advertise. However, in fairness to our instructors, there is a point when courses must be cancelled due to insufficient registration. With that in mind, please do not wait until the last minute to sign up for a class. You could be the one participant needed to meet the required minimum. The City of Nacogdoches does not provide individual, team, or group accident insurance for participants in Parks and Recreation programs. We recommend that you check with your personal agent to assure coverage. Please report any injuries to your program supervisor. Persons needing to cancel out of a program may apply for a refund at the Recreation Center prior to the starting date of the program. Refunds will not be issued after the first class meeting unless a written statement from a physician is received indicating illness or disability. They learn a variety of positions that involve stretching and allowing movement of the body. Class focuses on fine motor skills, combinations and small routines. Student have the opportunity to perform at local events throughout the year. Students will be grouped appropriately. Zumba® Kids Instructor: Mallery Garrett Date: Mondays, Wednesday & Fridays Time: 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm Ages: 5 - 12 years Cost: $5.00/class Perfect for our younger Zumba® fans! Participants get the chance to be active and jam out to their favorite music. Zumba® Kids classes feature kid-friendly routines based on original Zumba® choreography. We break down the steps; add games, activities and cultural exploration elements into the class structure. Youth Gymnastics & Cheerleading Gymnastics & Cheerleading Class Descriptions Adult and Tot: Children must be 1-3 years of age. In this class, children will work on advancing their motor skills and coordination. Children will be introduced to the gymnastics equipment and taught how to properly use different apparatus. Parents will be required to attend this class and assist the coach with their tot for the full 45 minutes. Developmental: Children must be 3 years of age. This class is for children advancing from Adult and Tot, or for those children who have never attended a gymnastics class before. Children will be introduced to gymnastics equipment and taught how to properly use different apparatus. Beginning Gymnastics: Children must be 5 years of age. This class is for children advancing from Developmental class. Proper form will be taught on all apparatus and advanced skill on the bars beam will be taught. Cartwheels, round-offs and handstands will be introduced. Intermediate Gymnastics: Children will be taught independence with their skills and will begin to perform skills on their own. Children will begin to work on backward walkovers, step skip cartwheels and running round-offs. Advanced floor skills will begin to be taught on the beam as well. Advanced Gymnastics: Children will begin working on their front walkovers, standing back handspring, running round-off back handspring and back handsprings series. Advanced floor skills will be taught on the beam as well. Beginning Cheer and Tumble: This class is for children 4 years and up. Children in this class will focus on the basics of cheerleading such as jumps, motions, and simple tumbling. Simple chants will be taught in this class, and children will work on perfecting their rolls, bridge-ups, handstands and cartwheels. Intermediate Cheer and Tumbling: Children will begin working on intermediate tumbling such as standing backbend, round-offs, back walkovers, front walkovers and running round-offs. Stunting will be introduced in this class if there are more than 4 students in a class. Advanced cheer and Tumble: This class is for the more advanced tumbler who is working on running roundoffs running back handspring and standing back handspring. This class is perfect for children who want to try out for middle or high-school cheerleading teams. The fees are as follows: • Up to 12 children: $75 for two hours • 13 - 24 children: $125 for two hours Parties are reserved in two hour blocks of time on Saturdays only. Party times include setup and clean-up. Available times are as follows: 10:00 am - 12:00 pm, 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm and 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm Youth Arts, Crafts & Music Arts and Crafts Instructor: Vicki Baggett Date: January 12 - May 18 Time: Mondays, Tuesdays & Thursdays 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm, Thursdays 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm Ages: 6 years & up Cost: $12.00/day, or punch card for 5 classes for $50.00 & a second child discount, 5 classes for $32.00 This class will explore a variety of media and types of art such as drawing, printmaking, painting, bookmaking, eco-art and seasonal crafts. Within each project we will discuss the elements of art, the history of art and learn about the different methods of looking at art to understand it. Emphasis will be on exploration, process and of course, fun. Come once, twice or three times a week! No class on January 19 and March 16 - 20. The house sits very close to the intersection of the old El Camino Real de los Tejas and La Calle de Norte and was home to many early businessmen, bankers, and political leaders including Thomas J. Rusk, Bennet Blake and William Ochiltree. This hands-on museum includes a fully functioning smokehouse, blacksmith shop and chicken coop as well as heirloom gardens and a sugarcane mill. Sterne-Hoya House Museum and Library Hours: Tuesday - Saturday, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm Location: 211 S. LaNana Cost: Free The Sterne-Hoya House Museum and Library is an 1830 dogtrot house built by prominent merchant and Texas Revolution leader, Adolphus Sterne. It was occupied by the Sterne family until 1869 when it was sold to the von der Hoya family. The house remained in the von der Hoya family until it was donated to the City of Nacogdoches in 1958. Cost: Free The Nacogdoches Railroad Depot was built by Southern Pacific Railways to replace the original wooden depot and opened on April 3 of 1911. The wooden depot was built in May of 1910 and burned to the ground less than a year later after it was struck by lightning. The depot remained in service until 1954. There are three pavilions, a swimming area, a fishing pier, & a boat ramp in the west side park. There are also tables, a swimming area, & another boat ramp on the east side of the lake. The Nacogdoches trail system is over 8 miles of both paved & unpaved walking and/or biking paths. The trails are equipped with water fountains and emergency phones, & patrons are encouraged to enjoy the wooded scenery safely during the daytime. 24
