Viva Pit Senyor!
A tradition carried on for generations from Cebu to different parts of the world, the Sinulog is a day to venerate the Child Jesus. In tune with the
beating of the drums and the chanting of Viva Sto Niño, the celebration is uniquely Filipino and bears a distinct imprint in our Catholic faith. PHOTO BY

Unassuming Filo student tops VCE
Ellayne Garcia all set to fulfil her dreams
Kristhine Gestano
To lead the pack in the VCE results in Hampton Park Secondary School never played a part
in Frances Ellayne Enriquez Garcia’s musings
about her life or immediate future. All the shy
teenager wanted was to get a score of 80 and
make nursing her entry course to science. But
fate has other plans. Ellayne not only did well
but bested other students from her school and
pleasantly surprised not only her parents and
the Filipino community but also herself. She
scored 95.60 in her VCE.
“She was pleasantly surprised she did not
even expect a VCE score high enough to enter
into her dream courses. It’s beyond what she
expected, and the fact seems surreal. At the
same time, she feels blessed to be granted that

opportunity. All in all, she’s really happy that
her hard work has paid off,” Lani Garcia, Ellayne’s mum, told The Philippine Times. Lani
works as a cashier in Melly’s Fil-Asian Grocery
in Hampton Park. The mum said it was no pure luck. The
young lady is a diamond in the rough waiting
for an opportunity to shine here as she consistently achieved excellent academic results
in the Philippines before her family came to
Australia on a working visa.
The achievement is a sweet twist to a string of
recent ordeals. After coming here, Ellayne’s dad
had one eye blind at work, then to make matters
worse his visa application for permanency
was refused by the Immigration Department
due to age. Ellayne’s dad brought the case to
the Migration Review Tribunal (MRT) through

Gratitude
Thank you
DIVYA JOY – October 2013
I have recently completed the IRON
program with ETEA which gave me
confidence to face any kind of challenging
clinical setting and to practice my
Professional Nursing Skills in Australia. I
was given constant support during my study
at ETEA by the staff and educators without
which I wouldn’t have succeeded in my course. Within a week of
completion of my course I was registered with AHPRA. I am happy
to say that I have already been offered with the job at one of the
hospital in South Australia and very shortly I will be in the new job.
JOMON JOSEPH – May 2012
Registered Nurse, Division 1 in Aged Care

I found the IRON program that I studied
at ETEA interesting, Challenging and
rewarding. I learnt a lot by following the
program and the study ETEA set out. It
really made me think and I liked how it enabled me to interact with
people through the clinical placement. The foundation I received
at ETEA made it easier to transition to taking care of patients in
the acute care setting. At ETEA I always felt that I had the support
that I needed to be successful. A big THANK YOU to all the staff,
teachers and Management for the smooth conduct of the Program
Are you a registered nurse in your country? Do you have an AHPRA letter to enrol
in the bridging program? Then ETEA is the college for you.

Being keen on a fresh start
you. Every day, we can be
better versions of ourselves
by reflecting on the day that
has passed before we go to
bed—who did we encounter for the day? Did we treat
people well? How much
did we give of ourselves to
our work and to our home
life? A Hindu philosophy
says that once you get out,
you do not return home.
Once you live your life for a
day, you become a changed
person because of your
dealings with people and
the different experiences
for the day. The person
which left the house in
the morning, for example,
does not return because he/
she has become a totally
different individual.
Personally, we should do
a daily renewal of the self.
It should be a conscious,
deliberate, and disciplined
effort to be kinder, more
understanding and tolerant of differences, and to
be of positive influence
to others. For example,
if within the community
we endeavour to promote
better communication and
understanding, let’s try
harder the next day if today
doesn’t work out too well.
Because if we leave things
hanging, or no one initiates
a move, we will be left at
a deadlock and forever be
doomed to be in a strife.
It’s that time of the year,
the new year, a time during
which we resolve to do
things better, quit bad habits, and change whatever it
is that stops us from getting
to our goals in life. The new
year seems to be a symbol
for a fresh start, a much
needed reboot from a life
kept hanging. And it’s like
clockwork, the moment the
clock strikes 12 midnight
at the last day of a year,
we consciously think we
are on our way to become
a different person putting
on freshly-laundered and
pressed clothes and setting
out to a whole new world.
However, as we know
from our daily grind, that
the new year should not
be the only condition for
a new beginning. Sometimes, because we were so
conditioned to start at that
period, we do not consider
to pick ourselves up when
we slide back to an old bad
habit, for example. We get
back to our old ways, and
wait for another new year
to make that resolution all
over again.
But why wait? Do we
always need a milestone
like the turn of a calendar
or a mishap such as becoming ill to resolve ourselves
to be better persons? We
believe that every new day
can be the dawn of a better

What are the requisites
for change? For us, it’s
humility, hope and faith.
If we always let pride
overtake our lives, we will
always think that we are
better than the next person
and that we don’t need to
learn or to change. The
Socratic doctrine Know
Thyself takes us to a selfreflection of who we are
and and take stock of our
strengths, as well as our
weaknesses. Knowing oneself is acknowledging what
one doesn’t know, thus the
necessity to accept tutelage
either from an expert or
from life experiences.
Humility should also be
coupled with hope, without
which, we will tend to
believe that no matter how
good we are, others are bad
and will remain bad. With
hope, there’s a positive
spirit that others can also
change. Finally, we should
keep a faith that even if all
else fails, there’s a God that
can seed transformation
in hearts, a change that
is internally-driven and
motivates one toward the
good.
If you believe that you
deserve better from life,
then take the time to reflect
what you can change today
to be better tomorrow. Make
this your mantra and every
day challenge.

Voices unite in a spectacular cause
Earvin Charles Cabalquinto
Gift giving is one of many
festive practices during the
Christmas season. Recently,
the young and talented artists from the Melbourne
Filipino community gathered and delighted Victoria
with a special gift. They all
unwrapped a night packed
with spectacular performances to raise funds for
typhoon Haiyan victims in
the Philippines.
Dubbed as “Give Love on
Christmas Day,” the Philippines Benefit concert was attended by Filipinos and was
held non-Filipinos across
Victoria held at The Deakin
Edge, Federation Square last
21 December 2013.
According to Alex Sy,
one of the organisers behind
the benefit concert, “Our
purpose really is to showcase
the talents of the Filipino
youths of Victoria. Secondly,
it’s for a good cause.”
The event was filled
with a host of unique and
entertaining performances.
A mix of popular Christmas songs, solo and group
performances, and diverse
musical genres ranging from
pop, rap and ballad kept the
audiences gleefully glued to
their seats.
The musical extravaganza
featured included performances from Czarina and
Ceira Mae, Rina Benedictos,
Jan Krystovic, Sarah Mclinden (Sarlin), Ana Monique
and Joreza Racasa, Aaron
Adeva, Sheralyn Hill, Florelie Escano, Pauline Edralin,
Myka Baculi, Kevin Cardona
& Camdogg, Giselle Hernandez, Meah Riano, Errwon,
Vee & Josh, Urban Force,
and Dose. The event capped
off with an all-star rendition
of “Give Love on Christmas
Day”, led by soloists Tala
Mondido and Kara Sims.
Mila Cichello, Chairperson of Bayanihan Australian
Community Network Inc.
and one of the organisers,
extended her gratitude to all
supporters, “So the lesson
for tonight: in each of us is
an everyday hero, we just
need to come together and
work together. And whatever
we give tonight comes back
to us a hundred fold.”
Czarina, one of the organisers and performers in
the event, added, “It’s such a
community-based fundraising event. There’s not just
one organisation involved
in this. It’s like everyone put
aside their differences and
just worked together.”
In his speech, Honourable
Bruce Atkinson, President
of the Legislative Council
of Victoria, recognised the
engagement of the youth in
the fundraising event, “They
are the future. And tonight
they are taking out their
responsibility in terms of
supporting those people.”
The benefit concert raised
$3,460 from online and from
walk-in ticket sales. Proceeds
would go to Australian Red
Cross.

which was based on
Neria’s research on
specialty recipes of
provinces in the Bicol
region and the Philippines in general.
The first part of
the book focuses on
recipes commonly
served in fiestas and
in everyday living, re-
gardless of where expatriates live as well as recipes
for merienda (snacks) and
desserts. It also shows
the foreign influences
in Filipino cuisine, particularly American and
Spanish in Bicol cuisine.
On the other hand, the
second part concentrates on Bicol-born
Filipino expatriates

nation of 7,107 islands
where the people’s love
of eating is as big as their
hearts. This is what Yasmin
uncovers in her new book
7000 Islands.
Despite the Philippines’s
central location in South
East Asia, most people know
little about the country and
its cuisine. Inspired by her
travels across the Philippines, Yasmin resolved to
share the Filipino food story

Unlike local Filipino

in recipes from mouthwatering savoury dishes

Feast of Sto Niño
The Sinulog Festival 2014
was held last 12 January
2014 at St. Peter Chanel’s
Chapel Blessed Sacrament
in Deer Park. The festival
started with a mass officiated
by Fr. Bong and Fr. Rowan.
Performers were Halad
Dancers and the Trival Sinulog Group of Hoppers Crossing. Wearing bright-coloured
costumes, they paraded from
the church towards the hall.
Others carried mini statues
of the Sto Niño then brought
them to the altar for the
traditional blessing.
There were also entertainment numbers while
the crowd enjoyed lechon,

other food.
Jeanette Marie Croucher
has been organising the
yearly event for the past four
years now. She is supported
by some organisations, volunteers and friends.

First Born Gospel Church’s
Christmas get-together
To some little ones, it was
their first performance in
public. To some, it could
have been their second or
third mini-performance,
perhaps at school or at home
during family parties. The
jitters were expected. The
teenagers, on the other hand,
had to endure that awkward
moment when public eyes
were on them. But who
cares? As the young emcee
said, they were there to
perform and worship the
Lord. The songs and dances
were a mixture of perfect
and not-so-perfect pitch, Pastor
Ben Respicio
some missing their steps,
and the others forgetting
the lyrics. The parents were
busy guiding the “performers” and the parental pride
in them was too obvious.
The kids’ performance
and the parade of Disney
characters were part of the

Chambered
nautilus
I just finished reading
the book of John Sandford,
Elijah Among Us, a guide
to those called to the prophetic ministry. The book is
a balanced approach to this
widely-misunderstood gift.
Sandford offers information
and prayer for unity, reconciliation, understanding and
discernment in the Christian
church (of all denominations).
I got hold of it when I
was asking the Lord of the
progress of my walk with
Him. I found the answer in
Sandford’s sharing about
the Nautilus. This snail was
the focus of Oliver Wendell
Holmes’ poem, “The Chambered Nautilus”. As it grows,
it must break out of the old
and build a new chamber,
larger than the first, and then
another and another. Each
new chamber is lined with
mother-of-pearl. This is the
parable of our evolution with
our Lord.
Sandford explains: “We
build theologies and concepts and ways of doing
things, and then, while the
basic must remain intact,
we must shatter that which
has crystallised and now
prevents growth, and build
anew- only to do it all over
again whenever the Lord
calls us Higher in Him.”
I realised that although
I miss my honeymoon period with
the Lord, able to sit
before Him with lots
of time in my hands,
I needed to be sent
forth afterwards and
do some hard yakka.
This spiritual growth
is to be expected, not
to be resented.
Like the nautilus, I
must be able to expe-
rience the turns of the spiral, up and out through the
chambers of life, receiving
more wisdom in my journey
with God through the different spirals of daily life, with
its ups and downs.
The nautilus has been replicating itself for 500 million
years. I do not have those
many years to stay here on
earth, but I have much moreeternity. The question is, am
I ready to learn the wisdom
of the ages and move with
the sacred geometry of the
nautilus shell?
I had a humble opportunity to praise God before a
Healing Mass. I wondered
why the Lord urged me to
take on the nautilus as a
theme. As I was prayed over
at the start, a friend saw the
vision of the sea. He did
not have prior knowledge
of my sharing that night.
Afterwards, as I was walking
out in the car park, I was
approached by a parishioner
who said that as a student of
biology, she truly appreciated my reflection-prayer
based on this sea creature.
I praised God for the gift
of vision. John Sandford
confirms that although God
selects men and women for
this serious office of being
prophets, He can enlist anyone to do the task any time.
This New Year 2014, I
pray that we can be open
to the workings of the Holy
Spirit and that a new chamber opens up for us as we
spiral towards the eternal
promise of perfection in
Jesus. In Him alone are we
born again, healed, grow in
unity and harmony with
the rest of His marvellous
creation.

Excelsis Catholic Choir
holds first concert
The Excelsis Catholic
Choir held its first concert
last 15 December 2013 at the
Christ Our Holy Redeemer
Parish in Oakleigh. Most of
the choir’s 25 members are
Filipinos.
Choir Conductor Tom
Buchanan is happy to train
the choir members saying
despite being formed only
five weeks before their first
concert, they rendered the
songs pretty well. “I think
they are great!,” Buchanan
told The Philippine Times.
Fr John Magri, in his
welcome speech, said the
Excelsis Choir represents
a thanksgiving of beautiful
voices which will be useful
in the church. “They look
professional, they sound
professional,” he said.
Some of the songs the
Choir rendered were:
“Gloria”, “The Lord is My
Shepherd”, “Do you Hear
What I Hear?”, “Grown Up
Christmas List”, “Granada”,
“Nessum Dorma”, “O Come
All Ye Faithful”, “Away in a
Manger”, “Serenada”, “Santa
Baby”, “The First Noel” and
“Freedom is Coming”.
Excelsis Catholic Choir is
still accepting new members.

Singing and baking her way
to our sweet cravings
Rosemarie Santiago Ong
is a baker at the Cheesecake
Shop. On the side, she also
sings with a band. Rosemarie talks about her diverse
art.
Q. When did you start
baking for the Cheesecake
Shop?
A. I started at the Cheesecake Shop in November
2005.
Q. You said you can bake
100 cakes daily. How do you
do this?
A . I m a n a g e t o b a ke
roughly 100 cakes a day.
Aside from the fact that it
is the shop’s s target production, I have learnt to manage
my time, to know which
one I should prioritise first.
Also, the perseverance and
happiness while doing those
cakes, and the feeling that
I have to finish all become
like some sort of base for
every cake.
Q. What was your training
before starting your job
there?
A. The previous owner
of the Cheesecake Shop
trained me to make cakes,
to ensure that the measurements are correct, familiarized me where I could get
the equipment and how to
maneuver it, and how to
serve customers. I like the
fact that during the training
I learnt a lot of things and I
am proud that I got to stay
that long in the company
and use my skills and that
I still remember the things
that were taught to me during training.
Q. What is your specialty
in baking cakes? Which flavour do you personally like?
Which flavour do you like to
bake for your customers?
A. I guess I can say that I
do have a sweet tooth. My
specialty would be… There
is actually a lot: Mango
cheesecake, marble and
caramel mudcake. I personally like the mudcakes
and apple strudel as well.
The most popular cake is
the Boston mudcake or the
chocolate mudcake, so I
love baking those cakes for
my customers. Every time I
get good feedback about it,
I feel really happy.
Q. You are also great at
singing. Give us a bit of a
background. What are your
favourite songs? Were you
professionally trained or
this is a natural skill? How
do you prepare when you
have a gig?
A. I have a lot of favourite
songs, but at the moment
I love the song “You and
Me Against the World.”
I dedicate it to my son. I
guess my skill in singing
is natural, and at the same
time I got to enhance it during my college days when I
was part of the choir in our
school. I still sing every
time I have the chance, like
at home when I’m relaxing
and just when I feel like it.
If I have any gigs, I exercise
like go for a swim, I practice
the songs that I will sing,
memorise them before the
gig so I can sing from my
heart and not think about
the lyrics more.
Q. You recently joined a
band. Pls give us a background.
A. Yeah I actually just did
join recently. I was invited to
sing for a friend’s birthday,
then someone approached
me from the band, and was
told that they like my voice
and invited me to be their
Marble Mud Cake from the vocalist so I said yes. It’s
interesting and it is someCheesecake Shop

in sharing to the community her achievement, this

willingly talks about her
immediate plans, “Pursue

I’m planning to continue
further studies in a university and if possible, study
as much as I can to expand
my knowledge and also gain
more experience. Hopefully
along the way, I can clear up
on what I specifically want
to be in the future.” However, the achievement has humbled Ellayne
more. In a speech given at
her school, she encouraged
fellow students to not let a

is just a number. It does not
justify a student’s worth in

open doors of opportunities.
And it is up to you which

A day with Casey Mayor Geoff Ablett
A group of Filipino seniors, volunteers and guests
spent a day with City of
Casey Mayor Geoff Ablett
who celebrated Christmas
with them and presented
gifts to Mr and Mrs Mamerto
and Maria Catayas whose
daughter and granddaughter
passed away in the recent
Yolanda typhoon tragedy
in the Philippines. It was a
relaxing day as the Mayor sat
and ate pansit bihon, spring
roll and beef caldereta with
the Filipinos.
The Christmas with the
Filipino Community was
held last 18 December
2013 at the Filipino Seniors
Wellbeing Day Centre in
Doveton. The Filipino seniors performed Christmas
carols, while the Australian
Multicultural Seniors Support Group of Frankston
presented Pandanggo sa Ilaw
dance number and Christmas songs using colourful
musical bells.
The Mayor also acknowledged the efforts of Filipino
volunteers for joining Australia’s 10,000 volunteers
who are putting themselves
out for the community.
These volunteers, he said,
are assisting the City of
Casey in delivering better
services to the community.
The Mayor presented gifts to
the Filipino volunteers.
Councillor Damien Rosario of River Gum Ward
and Sam Afra of the Ethnic
Communities Council of
the South East delivered
messages to the Filipino
community extending
sympathies to the affected
families at the same time
admiring their strong spirit
to rebuild lives despite the
ruins. “Our thoughts and
prayers are with you. Although we should celebrate
this Christmas season, we
should also remember those
who have lost their family
members and were affected
by the devastation.”

Pinoy Christmas Party in Hampton Park
EMG Enterprises, led by Ed and
Obet Guevarra, spearheaded the
Pinoy Christmas Party last 21
December at the Arthur Wren Hall
in Hampton Park. Charlene Sotelo’s
Smooth Jive Band led the all-night
singing, dancing and fun. Charlene,
together with her band, sang 34
songs all-in-all. The Filipino dishes being sold at
the venue were a hit as people got
to eat their favourite Pinoy BBQ, embotido, cassava cake, turon, dinuguan
and more.
Kids and adults enjoyed free photo
booth sessions, raffle prizes, games
and giveaways. Santa was also around
and kids lined up for their goodies.

A showcase of camaraderie
for a good cause
Elena Clasicas
A Christmas Charity,
coordinated by good-hearted
individuals led by Freddie
and Angel Leong, Caram
and Sally Singh, Sonny
and Lisa Gomez, Mike and
Maria Gardner, and Belen
and Henry Veerasamy, was
held on 14 December 2013 in
St. Albans, Melbourne. Out
of the $6,726 total amount
raised, $3,188 would go
to local charity St. Mary’s
House of Welcome in Fitzroy,
while the amount of $3,538
will go to the Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) Appeal in
the Philippines through the
Australian Red Cross.
Four months ago, the
group initially intended to
do the fundraising for St.
Mary’s House of Welcome.
However, when the furious
and unmerciful Typhoon
Haiyan struck the Philippines three weeks before
the scheduled fundraising
date, it was decided to split
the total proceeds between
the survivors of the Philippine calamity and the local
charity.
St. Mary’s House of Welcome looks after disadvantaged people who are homeless, impoverished or are
affected by mental illness.
The donation would go towards Christmas lunch that
they put on every year for
these disadvantaged people
who don’t necessarily have
family or friends with whom
to share the day and for their
other important needs.
Zoe Lake, representative
from St. Mary’s House, delivered a short message with
a slide presentation, while
Sonny Gomez reported the
situation in the affected areas
in the aftermath of Typhoon
Haiyan and the objective of
the evening’s fundraising.
He also announced the Rotary International’s intention
to purchase fishing boats for
those qualified for the grant
in the affected areas of the
Haiyan typhoon in the Philippines in conjunction with
a local Rotary organisation.
The night was filled with
dancing, excellent auctions,
wonderful raffle prizes, and
a lively karaoke competition
for those who dared. Rina
Benedictos, the guest singer,
entertained the guests with
her soulful voice. It was an
evening of great outpouring
and showcase of camaraderie
and fun for a good cause.
Mike Gardner was the
emcee while Caram Singh
and Andrew Smithson provided excellent music for
the event.

A night to remember
It’s that time of the year
again when all Pangasinanborn residents of Victoria,
their families and friends
gather around the Christmas
tables to celebrate and be
thankful of the blessings
they have received during
the year. Now on its 4th year,
the Pangasinenses Down
Under, Melbourne, Australia
or PDUMA held its annual
dinner dance at the Grand
Star Receptions in Altona
North on 21 December 2013.
This association, whose goal
is to reach out to fellow
Pangasinenses in Victoria
and reconnect them through
this annual gathering, has
provided the venue for all
Pangalatok and Ilocanospeaking Melbournians to
increase their network of
“Kabaleyans”.
The night started with
Gene Prado’s introduction
of this year’s emcees—the
charismatic Marvin Sangalang and the beautiful
Rochelle Noveloso. This was
followed by the welcome
address of the outgoing
president, Raffy Prado. Next
is the invocation and the
blessing of food by Pastor
Ernie Cartas. The night’s
first entertainment number
was aptly provided by the
gorgeous “Golden Girls”
with their cowgirl outfit and
boot-kicking number.
As the guests feasted on
the three-course meal, the
screening of the previous
events to the tune of several
Pangalatok songs brought
nostalgia and wonderful
memories to the crowd. The
guests were then entertained
by the melodious violin
interpretations of child siblings Jaz and Annica Prado.
After which, dancing ensued
with the prolific dance maestro, Chris Centeno, leading
the crowd through various
line dances and enjoyable
easy-to-follow moves.
A song number from the
youthful Florence Cowl
wowed the audience as well
as the folk dance rendition
of the seemingly game “Pangasinenses & Friends” dancers. Not to be outdone is the
professionalism of ballroom
specialist Roberto Bautista
and partner who delighted
the crowd with their perfect
swinging and awe-inspiring
performances.
The night will not be
complete without the numerous raffle prizes drawn
out throughout the party by
the generous donors and
supporters of this organisation. Everybody was dancing
and having fun throughout
the evening on the non-stop
spinning of uptempo tunes
by DJ Al Noveloso.
The night culminated
with the inspiring message by the organisation’s
President Rogel Noveloso
who thanked the guests for
making the night another
successful staging of this
annual event.

Pinoys in our community
Marie Pombuena
Age: 45
Origin: Osamis
Year Migrated: 2000
Current Occupation: Registered Nurse
Marie, fondly called ‘Sugar’ by her friends, arrived in
Australia with her family in
2000. She recounts that she
was not able to work straight
away back then, as she had
to look after her three small
children. When her fourth
child was born, Marie and
her husband decided to
sacrifice a few years apart
as she and her children went
back to Osamis in 2003, only
visiting Australia after every
few months. With the help
of her family back home
in caring for her children,
Marie was able to complete
a degree in nursing. She and
her kids returned to live in
Australia in 2006. She then
took a three-month bridging
course in nursing and was
able to secure a graduate
year program at Western
Hospital. She had since then
been a practicing nurse.
For fun, Marie spends time
with friends, goes shopping
or ballroom dancing. “And I
always tidy up. I’m always
busy. Oh, I have a fitness
regimen, too! I am currently drawn to Zumba,”she
relates. She and her family
go out every weekend and
eat out, but said “Iba pa rin
ang pagkain sa atin.” Aside
from the food, she misses
her family back home and
the sense of tulungan among
Filipinos.
Noel Pombuena
Age: 46
Origin: Osamis
Year Migrated: 2000
Current Occupation: Team
Leader at Toyota
Noel, Marie’s husband,
migrated with his family in
2000, leaving his job as a
telecommunications technician and manager for Bayantel back home. Amongst the
challenges he faced here in
Australia were the changing
of career and taking night
shifts when he worked at
VISY’s recycling plant. He
also had to endure a few
years without his family
near him, when Marie and
the children stayed for three
years in the Philippines.
However, he had long been
reunited with his family and
he says he is contented with
his current work at Toyota.
Noel’s wife, Marie,
enumerated his top three
pastime: Tanduay, golf and
barkada.
Pete de Pedro
Age: 34
Origin: Cotabato
Year Migrated: 1999
Current Occupation: Lineman
Pete’s migration story is
one of haste, devoid of dillydallying. In 1999, working
as a lineman for an electric
company in Cebu, Pete applied for the same line of
work in Australia via the
POEA. He submitted his
papers on a Monday and,
two days after, received a
call from the POEA’s human
resources telling him that
his work visa was approved
and that he was about to
fly to Australia that coming
Saturday.
When he arrived, Pete
relates how welcoming

Rosalia, or “Isay”, was
an accountant back home,
and was petitioned by her
fiancé, Leo, who had migrated and worked here a
few years earlier. She first
worked at an aged care facility, but went on to pursue
her previous profession.
“Getting a first job in accounting was perhaps the
greatest challenge I had,”
Isay says. She was finally
hired in the accounting department of DHL Global in
2008, and worked there for
four years. However, the
economic recession forced
the company to outsource
many of its operations,
including accounting, and
Isay’s position had been
made redundant. She then
decided to shift careers and
studied Division 2 Nursing, which she had just
completed recently. She is
currently preparing for her
graduate year program.
In her free time, Isay loves
to shop, bake, swim, spend
time with friends or watch
Korean drama. She misses
her hometown, her family
and old friends, and would
love to eat durian as much
as she used to.

Year Migrated: 1996
Current Occupation: Laboratory Technician
Leo was sponsored by
his aunt to migrate here in
1996, and started working
as a laboratory technician
in Echuca. He had to endure
loneliness living alone in
the country, distant from
the hustle and bustle of
the city and away from his
family. He would go cycling
or golfing on his free time. In
2005, he was finally joined
by his then fiancée, Isay.
They married and now live
in Caroline Springs.
Asked what he misses
most about the Philippines,
he says “Yung pagkain.

Getting a 457 Visa
Do you want to work in
Australia and bring your
family to work or study?
T h e t e m p o r a r y Wo r k
(Skilled) Visa subclass
457 will allow you to do
this. On top of this, you
can also travel in and out
of Australia as often as you
want.
What are the steps to
obtain this type of visa?
First, an employer must
be approved to sponsor
you as an overseas worker.
This can only be done
when the employer cannot
find an Australian citizen
or permanent resident to
do the skilled work.
Second, a position
must be approved for the
sponsored worker whose
occupation is listed in the
Skilled Occupational List
of Australia. You must
have the required skills
to perform the duties of a
position nominated by an
approved employer. This
is called a Nomination
Application.
Third, a 457 visa must
be approved for up to four
years. You can be in or outside Australia when your
application is lodged.
The Department of
Immigration and Border
Protection has recently
implemented changes that
made approval of 457 visa
stricter.
The required score for
the International English
Language test is now 5 in
speaking, writing, listening
and reading for applicants
who did not have five years
continuous study from
high school to at least 1
year vocational or collegiate course.
More tests were introduced to confirm whether
nominations (job vacancies
filled by 457 visa workers)
could not first be filled
by Australian citizens or
permanent residents.
What are the requirements
to be submitted by the
applicant?
Proof of Identity
- Bio data page of Passport
- NSO Birth Certificate
- Resumé
English Language Ability
- Vocational Certification
- Vocational Transcripts of
Record (TOR)
- Vocational English Language Certification
- Secondary Diploma
- Secondary Permanent

Business
Coach
BEN NOYNAY
Lessons on
Customer Service
Over the next few issues
of The Philippine Times
you will be reading several
lessons that will help you
learn how good customer
service can help your business grow.
In this first lesson let’s
talk a little about some
simple yet effective strategies that will help you
provide excellent customer
service for your business.
Did you know that customer service is often an
under-valued aspect of doing business? When in fact
if you want your business
to be successful, you need
to train yourself and your
employees to understand
that the customer must
always come first.
When it comes to provid-
ing good customer service, it
is important to personalise
your approach as much
as possible. One thing all
customers have in common
is the pleasure they receive
when establishments they
patronise make it clear to
them that they know who
they all are.
You have to prove to your
customers that you appreciate them. You can do this by
addressing them by name
in all your communications
with them. The golden rule
is: make them feel important
and they’ll prove that you’re
important to them, too!
Always give your best
plus more!
You should train your
employees to go the extra
mile for the customers. Being respectful and smiling
at all times may seem like
a little thing but it can go a
long way towards improving
your business’s customer
service record. Remember,
it’s often these little things
that make a big difference to
your customers.
Always be fair!
No request should be too
small to be considered, and
no customer should be too
insignificant to take care
of. Sure, there are certain
privileges that VIP customers are entitled to and
other customers are quick
to understand, but there are
also certain privileges that
everyone has the right to
enjoy like common courtesy
and dedication. Never let
your customers think that
you’re guilty of favoritism!
"If you want your business
to be successful, you need
to train yourself and your
employees to understand
that the customer must
a l w a y s c o m e f i r s t ."
Make sure you listen!
It is extremely important that you listen to what
your customer’s have to say.
This may be hard when the
customers is stubborn and
unreasonable. Even if you
end up unable to resolve
the issue, your customers
should still put the phone
down in a good mood because they knew you cared
enough to listen to them
without confrontation.
Make good use of FAQ’s.
If you don’t have a frequently asked questions
file or webpage for your
business, create one immediately. Having an FAQ
page is an effective way
of offering good customer
service on the fly. Keep a
record of common questions
and problems that have
been discussed for quick
reference. This will help to
negate the need for repeat
calls regarding the same issues. FAQ sections can help
prevent your customers and
employees from wasting
their time.
d
n
a
Glit
Never left issues
unresolved.
Every complaint must
be successfully addressed.
Train your employees to
perform follow-up calls to
ensure that all complaints
had been resolved. For complicated issues, make sure
that you give customers
progress reports to let them
know that you’re still working on their case. Do your
best to give them a specific
time period for which they
can expect the issue to be
fully resolved.

New Woolworths for Point Cook!
Excellent convenience and lifestyle options await new Featherbrook residents
Local shopping at Featherbrook
estate in Point Cook is set to get a
big boost, with a new Woolworths
supermarket and a great mix of
14 retail and specialty stores
now under construction in the
Featherbrook Village. Featherbrook
is one of Point Cook’s most popular
new estates and is being developed
by award winning Melbourne
developer, Central Equity Land.
The Village, with its medical
centre, pharmacy, café and the
popular Brook Bistro is a now a key
feature of Featherbrook estate. Just
opposite, the Featherbrook community centre is a lively local hub,
with child and maternal healthcare
facilities, kindergarten rooms, a
play area with equipment and
sandpit, IT training facilities, and
meeting rooms. A childcare centre
will also commence construction
in the Featherbrook Village soon
and a P-9 school is planned next
to this.
Featherbrook already offers unparalleled local lifestyle options in
Point Cook, with an abundance of
landscaped public spaces including
parklands, wetlands and recreation
areas, as well as sporting facilities
and a full size sports oval. Now
these will be matched with excellent local shopping in a thriving
village atmosphere.
For additional great shopping,
residents need go only a little
farther along Boardwalk Boulevard
to the Boardwalk Shopping Centre,
while the Point Cook Town Centre,
now a major retail hub of western
Melbourne is just up the road.
Featherbrook is just 25 minutes
off-peak from Melbourne’s Central
Business District by car and close
to the brand new Williams Landing Train Station which can be
conveniently accessed by the new
495 bus service that runs through
the estate.
Point Cook is now a destination of
choice for many new homebuyers
and Featherbrook is now a choice
estate in the area. Central Equity is
offering a variety of house and land
packages there to suit a wide range
of budgets and requirements.
The Featherbrook sales office
is at 275 Sneydes Rd (Cnr Sunnybank Drive), Point Cook and

Becoming financially independent
through property investment
Albert Sy
What does it mean? –
Financial independence is
a term generally used to
describe the state of having
sufficient personal wealth to
live, without having to work
actively for basic necessities, with assets generating
sufficient income during
the working and retirement
years and that which is
greater than expenses.
For some, getting to financial independence as soon as
possible is really important.
To others, they’re perfectly
fine with just saving up to
be independent in time for
retirement. There’s nothing
right or wrong with these
preferences; it’s just about
knowing what’s important
and then creating your
lifestyle and financial plan
around those priorities.
We achieve financial
independence by working
within a planned strategy
capable of realising that
objective and prioritising
the expenses that we can
afford like next year’s school
fees for the children, replac-
ing the family car when
required, taking that long
planned holiday, etc.
That is becoming financially independent –
basically replacing your
wages with a passive form
of income that is derived
from your investment properties.
The average person from
yesteryear spent many years
learning basic communication, social and technical
skills and a further 3 to
10 years learning vocational skills. All of these
are directed at helping us
participate in society and
earn a living. Basically we
follow the principles set by
our grandparents in which
they worked for 50 years
of their lives, got married,
bought a house, paid out
their mortgage over their
lifetime and then, retired on
a pension. Not one minute
was devoted to teaching us
how to best manage that income, evaluate and quantify
our needs and goals, and/
or plan and take the action
necessary to realise them.
Today’s generation works
42 years and enjoys an average of 18 years in retirement
and unfortunately the government through the pension will not keep them in a
lifestyle they have enjoyed
during their working life.
Once I remember seeing
this young man who waited
for the price of Real Estate to
come down. I first saw him
in July 1973. I was a young
Estate Agent Representative
and sold my first house
for $8,500 and home loan
interest rates were around
the 12-16% and rising which
was not uncommon.
I survived and went on to
purchase my own business,
and, yes our young man is
no longer young but is still
waiting for house prices
to come down. That first
house I sold is now in the
median Melbourne house
price range of $500,000
Plus.
Life will inevitably move
on and we all know that the
price of Real Estate will keep
on rising. But be realistic and
don’t just accept my word
after all, I have a vested
interest; I am a Real Estate
Agent and trying to sell you
a property.
Those who have placed
their faith in good old bricks
and mortar as a medium
to long term investment
have rarely lost. Ask anyone
who owns his or her home
“would you do it again? And
the answer is invariably an
emphatic “Yes”.
Sales are now very buoyant and 2014 is shaping
up to be the best time to
be purchasing a home or
investment property as all
indicators are telling us to
prepare for another upwards
surge by 2014–2015 and
beyond.

would like to seek further assistance

buyer options, please feel free to

Another banner year for
Megaworld International
In a glittering gala event at
the Marriot Hotel in Newport City attended by 450
sales people from four regions – Middle East, Europe,
North America and Asia
Pacific, another milestone
was celebrated by the global
marketing arm of Megaworld Corporation. It was
yet another banner year for
Megaworld International for
achieving a 60% increase in
sales in 2013, an outstanding
feat made possible through
the collective hard work
and perseverance of the
employees and the global
sales network.
In his privileged speech
in the recent company
Christmas party, Megaworld
Corporation Founder and
Chairman Mr. Andrew L.
Tan said, “I would like to
congratulate Megaworld
International for its sales
performance this year. It
is an outstanding achievement.”
“This has been a remarkable journey which started
fourteen years ago with
only a staff of five and we
transformed ourselves to a
global force, the only true
supermarket of homes that
cater to foreigners and Filipinos abroad wherever they
may be,” says Megaworld’s
First Vice President Marivic
M. Acosta. She adds, “I am
happy that the Power of
One, rooted in the values of
single-minded heart, mind
and spirit, finally bore fruit
this year.”
The theme for 2013 was
“Power of One”. It encouraged an environment that
pursued teamwork, discipline, determination and
integrity. Each member of
the Megaworld International
organization works with
passion and commitment
in their singular pursuit for
excellence.
To date, Megaworld International has more than
100 satellite offices around
the world and is poised to
expand to more territories.
Megaworld International
brings the best real estate
choices from the largest developer in the Philippines.
“Filipinos and investors
abroad come to us because
we have the widest range
of home and condominium
projects in the Philippines
through the Megaworld
group. But we don’t just
offer homes, we offer a
complete ‘live-work-playlearn’ lifestyle; we don’t just
offer properties, we offer
investments that appreciate
over time,” Acosta says.
It was also a night celebrating the sales achievement of
its top sales performers.
Awards conferred during
the evening include: Top
Sales Performers – Overall
and Top Sales Performers
per developer; including
awards given by Megaworld,
Global Estate Resorts, Inc.,
Suntrust Properties and
Empire East Land Holdings,
Inc.
The highlight of the ceremony was the launching
of the theme for 2014, “The
Power of INCREASE”, which
emphasized growth in territories and recruitment, as
well as improved customer
service, processes, training,
and marketing.

Measles warning
issued for travellers to
the Philippines
NSW Health is reminding people travelling to the
Philippines in the coming weeks to check they and their
children are fully immunised for measles before their
departure.
Dr Vicky Sheppeard, Director of Communicable Diseases at NSW Health, said measles is highly contagious
among people who are not fully immunised.
“Measles is spread through coughing and sneezing,
and is one of the most contagious infections known,”
Dr Sheppeard said.
“Complications can range from an ear infection and
diarrhoea to pneumonia or swelling of the brain.
“In recent weeks there have been 3 travellers from the
Philippines to NSW infected with measles. Cases from
the Philippines have also been reported in Western
Australia. We believe that population displacement
due to Cyclone Yolanda has created the conditions for
a measles outbreak in the Philippines.
