aquin's history
A long tradition of quality Catholic education began when Aquin Central
Catholic High School opened its doors for the first time on September 7,
1923, on the second floor of St. Mary’s School, with 30 students from
the four local Freeport parishes. Aquin was originally known as the
Freeport Catholic Community High School. Sister Mary Eleanor, O.P., was
the first principal and director of the many activities that took place that
first year. It was staffed by the Sisters of St. Dominic of Sinsinawa,
Wisconsin, the assistant pastors of the local parishes and by Catholic
and non-Catholic lay teachers under the directions of a Diocesan priest
as superintendent.
On the first day of school on September 8, 1924, the name was
changed to Aquin High School. The school continued to occupy the
second floor of St. Mary’s Grammar School. In the fall of 1925 the
school expanded to include the second and third floors of St. Mary’s.
When Fr. Charles Conley was appointed pastor of St. Mary’s parish in
July of 1924, he also became superintendent of the school. As
enrollment steadily increased, property was acquired to erect a high
school building, which was located on a six acre tract of land across
from St. Vincent’s orphanage. Funds were raised by all four parishes
and construction of the new building was begun. The cornerstone was
laid by Bishop Muldoon on May 9, 1926.
The first class graduated in 1927. Aquin has been accredited by the
University of Illinois since December 22, 1926; by the State of Illinois
Office of Public Instruction since May 13, 1929, and by the North
Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools since the 10th
of April, 1931.
The Class of 1943 decided that they needed a mascot for the sports
teams. After a contest for suggestions, the title ‘Bulldogs’ was selected.
Acoording to the 1943 yearbook, “It was their tenacity of purpose, and
never-say-die spirit that won them the name. Though the charts showed
the team outweighed in almost every game, the Bulldogs lived up to
their name.”
Over the years the school expanded to meet the needs of its growing
student body, and in 1959, the parishes of St. Joseph’s, Lena: St.
Wendelin, Shannon; St. Vincent Home for Children; St. Thomas Aquinas,
Freeport; St. Mary’s, Freeport; and St. Joseph’s, Freeport; met with
Bishop Loras T. Lane and decided to form what is became known as
Aquin Central Catholic High School. It was also decided at that meeting
to build an addition which would include a library, cafeteria, gymnasium,
laboratories and additional classrooms. Ground breaking ceremonies
were held on August 30, 1959 and the new addition was dedicated on
March 19, 1961. The Junior High School was added to the building in
September, 1976.
In April 1969, the Freeport Board of Catholic Education was established.
In 1990, the function of the Board was revised and a new name was
adopted. Their official title became The Freeport Catholic Schools Council
of Administration. Currently the school provides a fully accredited
academic program. Highland Community College and CareerTec are
both available to Aquin High School students.
In September 2007, the Bishop officially announced that Freeport
Catholic Schools would be known as Aquin Catholic Schools.
Incorporating three campuses across Freeport, this new name unites
PreSchool through Grade 12 students under the Aquin name. Five
parishes continue to support the system both financially and spiritually.
Aquin Catholic Schools currently have an enrollment of 358 students.
Aquin is a community of the past and the present with great hope for
the future.

Welcome
to Saturday Night Fever!
Can you dig it?
Tonight we are revisiting the 70s.
t’s going to be a Far Out evening!
This year we are honoring Jim Jenkins, Class of 1954,
and his wife Lynda.
Jim has been a volunteer coach for our youth for 50 years.
He is a way cool dude who never said the words,
“looo-king Gooood!”
to his basketball players,
but maybe, occasionally, thought them!
Jim symbolizes the dedication of our Aquin familyparents, alumni, and friends
wIthout your help we could not
Keep on Truckin!
Tony’s (John Travolta) father said,
“Four dollars? You know what four dollars buys today?
It don't even buy three dollars!”
Because of your presence tonight, and with your help,
Aquin is able to stretch three dollars into four!
A sincere thank you, also, to Laura Diemer for her leadership.
She is Sweetness personified!
Thank you from the Aquin children
For whom the 70s is history
but for us it is time to
Boogie!
Do You Copy? Catch you on the flip side! Later!

Honorary chairpersons
. Jim and Lynda Jenkins .
Jim and Lynda Jenkins were married July 8th, 1961, and will be celebrating
their 50th wedding anniversary this year. They will also celebrate their 50th
anniversary of owning Jenkins Service Body Co. Jim began working with
his Dad at the shop when he was in high school, and started full time upon
graduation. He became a partner at 18, bought the shop at age 24 in
1961 and is still working full time at the shop today.
Jim and Lynda had children in the Catholic Schools for 30 years, from
1961-1991 and are the parents of 5 Aquin Alumni: Mike ’73, Jaime ’81,
Bret ’82, Craig ’84 and Ryan ’91. They have 6 grandchildren.
Jim and Lynda still attend almost every Aquin athletic event (their kids say
that Jim has attended more Aquin games than anyone, Lynda would be
second). The only time they miss is if Jim is coaching a game or if their
grandchildren, who live in Marengo and Belvidere, are playing or cheering
in a game.
Lynda was on the Catholic School Board for 8 years and V.P. for 2. She's
worked on most of the Aquin fundraisers from the 1960’s through the 80’s.
Jim attended grades 1-8 at St. Joseph’s Grade School. He played football
and basketball in grades 6, 7 and 8. He attended Aquin High School and
played football, basketball, and baseball for the Bulldogs and graduated
from Aquin in 1954.
Jim began coaching basketball in the early 60s with Ron Richter at St.
Thomas Grade School and moved over to St. Joseph’s to coach his oldest
son, Mike, in the mid-60s. He continued coaching St. Joseph’s Grade
School team until his second son Bret started playing Church League in the
early 70’s and coached through the ’74-‘75 season.
In 1975, Jim became the head coach for St. Joseph’s Middle School 6th
grade boys team. He moved to the Aquin Jr. High 7th grade team the next
year. When the Catholic Schools reorganized, he then coached the 8th
grade team in 1977-78. He has coached Aquin Jr. High 8th grade boys
basketball ever since. In 1975, Greg Timlin, Aquin Superintendent at the
time, asked Jim to become Athletic Director for St. Joseph’s Middle School.
He still holds that volunteer position at Aquin Jr. High today.
In 1976, Jim and Dick Maurer, Aquin Head Basketball Coach at that time,
spearheaded the formation of the CBA, the Catholic Basketball Association.
The initial meeting was attended by Jim, Dick Maurer, Ron Richter, Larry
Casey, and Deno Schirmer. The CBA is still going strong today.
Jim also coached football on and off for almost 20 years at Aquin Jr. High.
He coached the first 16 of those years with George Hiveley, Art Krieger, and
Ron Richter.
Jim coached Freeport Little League teams for 26 years. He was part of a
group that implemented new Little League rules, including one that all
players get to bat whether playing in the field or not.
Notes from Lynda:
--originally said he would retire after our kids were out of Aquin (in 1991).
Now says he'll quit “when it isn't fun anymore”.
--”You can wear any color shoes you like, as long as they're white.” He's
mellowed and now they can have blue stripes.
--Aquin sports have provided us with wonderful, inexpensive family
entertainment through the years. We'll always be proud Bluejay and
Bulldog Backers!
--In 1954, Jim turned down a football scholarship to Loras to work on cars
with his dad.
--In 1960, Jim played baseball, softball, basketball and flag football in city
and park leagues
--In 1961, Jim started coaching basketball, later added baseball and then
football. He started eligibility requirements for basketball players
--in 1993, he was named Junior High Basketball Coach of the year by
Illinois Basketball Coaches Association.

tax deductibility
Under Section 6115 of the Internal Revenue Code, Aquin Catholic Schools’
organization is required to inform all patrons attending the EXTRAVAGANZA as to the
portion of the contributions to the event that may be tax deductible.
General Rule: If, with the respect to any contribution made by you to the
EXTRAVANGANZA, you receive goods or services in return, your contribution is
deductible for federal income tax purposes only to the extent that its value exceeds
the value of goods or services received by you from the EXTRAVANGANZA.
For purposes of determining the tax deductibility of your expenditures, we advise:
1. The value of the meal and beverages for each ticket is $45.00
2. To the best of our knowledge, the value of each item is approximated in the
EXTRAVANGANZA catalog or will be provided by letter once costs are incurred.
Values set on items being auctioned are donor’s estimates and are not warranted
by the EXTRAVAGANZA for tax purposes or general use.
PLEASE NOTE: You may wish to consult your tax advisor for further explanation or
advice as to the tax deductibility of your contribution to the EXTRAVAGANZA.
Auction rules
silent auction
The Silent Auction opens at 5:00 pm and ends at 8:00 pm. All items in the
Silent Auction have bid sheets attached to or next to them. If you desire to
bid on an item, do so by writing your auction bidder number and the
amount of your bid on the sheet.
Each increase in bid must exceed the minimum increase figure stated on the
bid sheet in order to constitute a valid bid. Each new bid must be written on
the next lower black line on the bid sheet.
The final closing time will be 8:00 pm and the closing bid circled by the
Extravaganza official constitutes the winning bid. Only a Silent Auction
authorized person may nullify a bid. Bids written after the closing time will
not be accepted.
A bid off will be conducted if there is a dispute at the closing of the Silent
Auction. An auction “referee” will give each bidder a bid sheet to write one
final bid; the highest bid will be accepted. Decisions by the referee are final.
live auction
Doors open at 5:00 pm in order to give you an opportunity to view the
various items prior to bidding. The Live Auction will begin at approximately

Classroom 'themed baskets'!
The themed baskets were comprised as a fun, inexpensive way for each
and every student to become involved in this wonderful event, our #1
fundraiser of the year!!
Each class was given a theme, some ideas and lots of encouragement to
use their creativity once again. The response we received from our Aquin
families on this project was overwhelming. So much, that some baskets had
to split into three or four packages.
We would like to thank each and every family for taking part in this project
and for their generous contribution. Also, thank you to the teachers and
classroom moms for their encouragement! Once again, this has been a very
exciting project to be involved with--from start to finish.
Please take the time to seek out these packages as we are sure that you
will find these creations both unique and captivating! And if you’re the high
bidder, you can take home a little bit of tonight’s creativity with you.

Live auction
We would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one
of you for the monetary donations that you so graciously gave for
this very worthy cause. Your donations allowed us to create many
of the outstanding packages being presented this evening. We
would also like to thank those individuals and families that provided
pre-planned packages for tonight’s auction. We are so amazed by
your generosity!
This year, we received monetary donations ranging from $5 to $500.
Please know that any monetary donation made to the Live Auction
is greatly appreciated and it is used to its fullest degree. We have
incorporated these donations into packages for the Live Auction,
where we not only bring in the majority of funds, but make up the
most exciting portion of our Extravaganza!
As a committee, we pride ourselves in spending a great deal of time
in planning, purchasing, and putting together packages that
guarantee to entice---all the while remembering what our purpose is
here tonight: to raise money for our school! This is only possible
because of your generosity, and again, we thank each and every
one of you.
