Foundation report Help Support the Bone Marrow Registry Drive By Avon Pagon S ince 2009 more than 1,100 individuals have been added to the National Bone Marrow Registry from the donor drives conducted at independent pharmacies across the country. One drive even resulted in a donor match that saved a life! Roughly 140,000 people in the United States last year were diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma, or myeloma that required treatment with bone marrow transplants. More than 70 percent of these patients must rely on an unrelated donor to find a bone marrow match. There is a need for donors of all races, but the need for minority donors is critical. Roughly 140,000 people in the United States last year were diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma, or myeloma that required treatment with bone marrow transplants. In November the NCPA Foundation and DKMS, the world’s largest bone marrow donor center, will again coordinate a donor drive in recognition of National Bone Marrow Awareness month. Joining the national registry is a simple process for donors and requires a small test, which involves a cheek swab using a cotton tip. Pharmacists are needed to promote the donor drive and to screen potential donors at community pharmacies. Once you complete brief webinar training, planning material, promotional tools, and consumable supplies for donor screenings will be provided. If you are interested in conducting a donor drive at your pharmacy, please email [email protected] with your first and last name, pharmacy name, mailing address, and phone number. 14 america’s Pharmacist | September 2011 Auction set for convention The NCPA Foundation’s annual Fundraising Auction will be held in the exhibit hall at the NCPA Annual Convention in Nashville.
