The first thing I always think of when I hear "March 1st" is that chamber member, The Dairy Barn, opens! As stated in last month's newsletter, I had hoped to list three key objectives for each of the 5 committees for the chamber this year. All of the groups have not been able to meet, as we only completed a sign-up list last week. However, here are a few items that will be brought up at the meetings by committee chairs, just to give you a taste: Stewart Smith, who heads the Membership Services committee returned one of his plans which will be to better meet the needs of our existing industries we want our committee involving industry to meet on a monthly basis and actually go out and visit with our local industries to determine their needs and to develop strategies that the Chamber can assist in meeting those needs. This would be done in conjunction with Jack Hammontree, Executive Director of the McMinn County Economic Development Authority. By the time the April newsletter is to go out, I hope to have a punch list of all items from all committees. Again, if you have questions, comments or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us at the chamber office. This is your chamber, we are there to serve our members, both current and potential, as well as those who visit The Friendly City. ATHENS BUSINESS Chairman’s Letter I have always felt lucky that, with the exception of Richard Nixon, I have met and or spent time with every U. S. President in my lifetime. However, the president from whom I perhaps learned the most was not one of these leaders from Washington, but a humble longtime chamber member and former chamber chairman, Mr. Hugh Willson. While my connections to the Hugh & Mintie Willson family date back almost 100 years, it has been within the last twenty, or so, years that I have spent quality time with - and learned the most from - Mr. Hugh Willson. At 17 years old, I worked the summer of 1986 as a courier for Mr. Willson and the Citizens National Bank. I recall - as it can still be witnessed today - the family - type atmosphere that exists among the associates of the Citizens National Bank. This culture of respect and admiration among employees is carried over to anyone who walks through the bank’s doors. As I read recently, an unwritten motto at CNB is “don’t treat them like customers, but treat them as your friends.” Hierarchy was not a concern for Mr. Willson. He gave equal friendly attention to everyone – whether you were on the bank’s board of directors, or if you were a contracted member of the cleaning crew in the evenings. Whether you had $5 or $5 million deposited in CNB - you were welcome in the office of Mr. Willson. During a summer Sunday afternoon a couple of years ago, Mr. Willson’s grandson and namesake, Hugh, made a comment about how his father and grandfather had to stop and speak to everyone wherever they went. I remember telling the “younger Hugh”, that it was actions like that as to what makes CNB different from any other bank or business I had ever known. I think that “young Hugh” has been somewhat consoled over these past few weeks, hearing incessant stories of his grandfather’s love for the community, as well as for his fellow man. This, indeed, is what made Hugh McReynolds Willson the respected man he was – and subsequently what made the success of Citizens National Bank. So long friend. Member Spotlight—April 2007 Athens Insurance Agency Athens Insurance was founded in 1931 as an independent insurance agency. From the early 1950s to the 1980s, it grew into one of the largest agencies in East Tennessee. Athens Insurance writes a variety of accounts including trucking companies, dairy farms, manufacturers, retail clothing chains, as well as small town jewelry stores, churches and professionals. In the mid-eighties the agency was sold to a bank holding company. They had hopes of marketing insurance products to the customers of small community banks. The agency was sold to the current owners, Allen Carter and Harold (Happy) Powell in November, 1999. Under their ownership, the agency started a tremendous growth pattern. Currently we have $14 million in commercial account premiums, $3.5 million in personal lines account premiums and over $13 million in Life and Health account premiums. We have grown consistently since their purchase. The current owners brought new energy to the agency by hiring young producers and providing them with the sales and insurance training needed to become successful. Continuing education in the insurance industry is stressed to these young agents as well as all of our staff. Members of the agency staff sit on various company panels and work well with the company personnel. We feel is a benefit when working with the company underwriters on accounts. We know the companies we represent, and they, in turn, know us. Under the guidance of these owners, we hope to continue to grow and to become the largest privately owned agency in Tennessee – if not the Southeast. We have worked hard to obtain contracts with the best Insurance Companies which provide some of the best coverages available. Our sales staff is comprised of energetic, hardworking, dedicated young individuals. Our support staff is equally hardworking, dedicated, and very knowledgeable about the insurance business, products, and markets. The combination is unbeatable. We look forward to continued growth and success as an agency. Owner Jeff Wolfenden grew up in Athens and learned firsthand from his father how to effectively run a business. His dad, Dr. Robert Wolfenden, was a well known local dentist who served on the city council and instilled in Jeff the values that make Madison Avenue Pharmacy so successful. The unselfish belief of “giving back to the community” has stayed with Jeff throughout his career. Jeff’s grandmother, Mildred Johnson, was also a great influence in his life. “She was a very dynamic woman who taught me how to treat people. This community has been so great to me. Athens is a great place to live and I want to give back to this community. That’s the main reason I started a hometown pharmacy.” The Wolfenden family has also had a long relationship with the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce. Jeff’s grandfather, Chester Lee, is a past chairman of the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce, and Jeff is a current board member. Jeff went to Samford University School of Pharmacy before moving to Cleveland, TN in 1987, where he worked for Revco. In 1996, Jeff purchased the Cleveland store, Crawford’s Pharmacy, and in 2000 decided to open a store in Athens. Madison Avenue Pharmacy has had a continuous increase in business every year since it opened. When you visit the Athens location, you will be greeted with genuine friendliness and superior customer service. (Gold Sponsor of McMinn Tomorrow Leadership Dinner) WELCOME NEW CHAMBER MEMBERS! Both were students, earning their masters degrees in economics, and not coincidentally, Frits’ masters thesis was a review of temporary labor in the Dutch marketplace. Frits and his partner were working against difficult odds: The temporary staffing industry in the Netherlands was very small and had a dubious reputation. One major trade union and the Dutch Labor Party argued that temporary staffing companies should be banned. HR SourceS & SolutionS K & S Signs, Inc. Life Care Center of Athens Mayfield Dairy Farms, Inc. Morning Pointe of Athens Southeast TN Career Center Southern Hydraulic Cylinder, Inc The Daily Post-Athenian Nevertheless, Frits saw there was a significant need for flexible staffing in the Dutch economy, and believed a company with the right structure and philosophy could be successful. Uitzendbureau Amstelveen’s first branch office operated from Frits’ kitchen table. Outfitted with a bicycle, knowledge of the businesses surrounding his apartment and flyers that announced the services the company offered, Frits and his partner worked as a unit, each promoting the company during their visits. Since their only mode of transportation was a bicycle, the geographic area in which they marketed the company had to be small. After some time making repeated visits to prospective clients, Frits and his partner received their first order: the Italian automobile manufacturer Fiat was looking for a bilingual secretary. In a brush of serendipity, one of the first talent to declare herself available for an assignment was a bilingual secretary. Uitaendbureau Amstelveen’s first match between client and talent was made. By systematically engaging in the same activities, day in and day out, Frits and his partner had seven talents working by the end of 1960 and Uitzendbureau Amstelveen declared a first-year profit of nine guilders, or $4.50. 1961– Business had grown sufficiently to justify opening the first ‘real’ branch office. By repeatedly visiting prospective customers within a small geographic area, Frits and his partner were able to keep their company ‘top of mind’ so that when an unplanned staffing need arose, the customers would think of them. 1962—Uitzendbureau Amstelveen received its first order requesting multiple talent. The client placed an order for four talents. 1963—Frits and his partner obtained their masters degrees in economics. Meanwhile the company had grown to a number of branches in Amsterdam and expanded to its next big city, Rotterdam. It was decided to change the company’s name, and after much thought, ‘Randstad’ was selected. Randstad means “ring of cities” and describes the area encompassing the cities of Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam and The Hague. It was the company’s strategy to become the dominant staffing company in the small geographic area described by ‘Randstad.’ And the story continues today—Frits focused on the basics. He had a structure: a unit system that started with he and his partner. Working together, they established a ‘sales and service’ foundation that enabled them to keep a focused approach to what would become Randstad’s successful growth strategy: consistent visits to a select database, within a relatively small geographic area, while building lasting relationships with both clients and talent. In 1994, the former Cherokee Federal S & L building located on Congress Parkway in Athens was purchased to house the Bank’s new branch, Bank of Athens. During 1995, Bank of Niota changed its name to Premier Bank of East TN, but continued doing business as Bank of Niota, a Premier Bank Office. Bank of Athens, a Premier Bank Office opened during this year, as well. On January 1, 1996 Premier Bank of East TN was purchased by Green County Bancshares in Greenville, TN. Bank of Athens and Bank of Niota began operating as Offices of Green County Bank in 1999. In 2002, Green County Bank was listed on NASDAQ. In early 2007, “Tennessee’s Most Convenient Bank”, became even more convenient when, after operating under 18 different bank names, all locations embraced one name, GreenBank. GreenBank is now the 2nd largest community bank headquartered in Tennessee, only behind First Tennessee Bank.
