Are you good with numbers? Do you enjoy
working with people?
From the Director's Desk
I guess it’s a good thing that we are so busy
that I don’t have space to write my column
for the second month in a row! Maybe I’ll
have some room in December but for now I
say Happy Fall, Enjoy your Thanksgiving,
and give thanks that we have so many great
opportunities to keep you busy!
The AARP Tax-Aide Program invites you to utilize
these skills in preparing taxes for seniors. If you
have prior experience in doing your own taxes or
helping others, please consider volunteering as a
“tax preparer”. IRS self-study training is provided
starting in November, taking about 30 hours to
complete, which includes passing an IRS test. In
January, formal training classes will be conducted
at Mohler Center that cover tax laws and review the
IRS Test. These classes will be held over a 2 to 3
day period and are mandatory. Computer skills are
also required since all returns are completed on the
computer. “Hands on” computer training will also be
provided in January. Tax return preparation begins
February 1st. An average of 10 hours per week is
asked of you.
Pilates at Mohler Center
Starting November 2
Imagine an exercise that provides the
stretching benefits of Yoga and strengthening of a gym work-out.
Pilates provides
control, balance and strength. This safe, no
impact exercise will meet Mondays,
Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8:30—9:30
AM and Mondays and Wednesdays from
6:00—7:00 PM. Class fees are $3.00 per
class ($4.00 for non members) and 10 class
punch cards will be sold. Most of the class is
on the floor in a seated position, on the back
or on the stomach. Mat Pilates classes can
also utilize small apparatus, such as; light
hand weights, stability balls, small “squishy”
balls and elastic bands. A Pilates mat or
thick Yoga mat is recommended. The class is
structured for beginners, novices, intermediate and advanced individuals wanting to improve posture, breathing, and a general feeling of “well-being.” Questions? Stop by
class and talk to instructor, Sally Kurtz.
First class is free—now is great time try
Pilates!
If you just enjoy people, then the “greeter” position
may be to your liking. Self- study materials will be
provided and passing a simple 10 question test is
required. In January, we will meet for 2 hours to
review test answers and go over any questions.
Total time for training should not exceed 8 hours.
During the tax season, a commitment of 6 hours
per week is asked. If you have questions and wish
to volunteer for the Mohler Center Tax-Aide Program, please call Jerry Frola at 717-566-5692.
Please leave your name, phone number and best
time to call by November 30.

Dear Mohler Center Members,
October 1, 2015
Since 1997, the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center campus has been home to the Mohler Center, currently located at 35 Hope Drive on the Medical Center’s East Health Campus.
The Mohler Center and Medical Center have enjoyed a positive and productive partnership over the
course of those eighteen years. It is understood that the Mohler Center serves an important role in promoting the health and wellness of our senior community, including many retirees from the Medical Center and Penn State College of Medicine. It provides local seniors with a convenient option to participate
in fitness, cognitive and social opportunities through a robust daily activity calendar.
The Mohler Center and Medical Center have an existing lease agreement for the use of the 35 Hope
Drive location that extends to June 30, 2025. This lease includes ongoing rental fees for continued use of
the space. Recently, in an effort to improve the Mohler Center’s overall financial position, its Board of
Directors approached Medical Center leadership with a request to reduce its rent.
To help ensure continued support for our local senior community, the Medical Center and Mohler Center
agreed to an amendment of the existing lease, which will enable the Mohler Center to use the current facility at a reduced rate. This arrangement also reduces the term of the Mohler Center’s lease by five years
to June 30, 2020.
The agreement will enhance the Mohler Center’s financial position and provide ample time to work with
local businesses and township officials to find a new location, so it may continue to support its community programming into the future.
Rather than build a brand new clinical facility, the Medical Center can now expand patient care into the
space that will be vacated by the Mohler Center in July 2020, to meet the increasing demand for patient
care services. This past year, our busy outpatient clinics handled more than 1 million patient visits, and
we expect this demand will continue to grow.
The amendment was approved by the Mohler Center Board with the full support of Medical Center management. Derry Township officials are aware of this agreement, and the Mohler Center Board is working
in partnership with the Derry Township Parks & Recreation Department toward finding potential options
to relocate its facility and programming within the next five years.
In the interest of transparency, we wanted to share this development with those who benefit from the services and programs of the Mohler Center, as well as local business leaders and community officials with
an interest in the Center’s continued success. Thank you.
