CAROLINA BALLET
2016–2017
Never has a lineup of repertoire
performances felt as fresh and
invigorating as this. Carolina Ballet’s
19th season features programs that
captivate the senses through live
music and choral pieces, intricate
sets, colorful costumes, and
thrilling choreography.
Carolina Ballet invites you to experience fan-favorite
programs by Artistic Director Robert Weiss and
Principal Guest Choreographer Lynne Taylor-Corbett as
well as a new ballet from Choreographer in Residence
Zalman Raffael.
There is truly something for everyone this season,
with shows for opera lovers, music lovers, bibliophiles,
families, and more.
Tossing. Turning. Floating. Flowing.
Moving to the undulant rhythm of the sea.
Claude Debussy’s iconic La Mer, with all its dynamic
energy and imagery, serves as the latest musical
inspiration for Choreographer in Residence Zalman
Raffael as he premieres an immersive new ballet that
evokes the chaos and grandeur of the sea.

Cervantes’ death in 1616, Artistic Director Robert Weiss sends
the tarnished knight, Don Quixote, back onto the stage to
chase love and battle windmills in this imaginative ballet filled
with moments of humor and sorrow.
“One of [Weiss’] very best creations, a huge crowd pleaser.”

Ballet’s family favorite, The Nutcracker. A holiday tradition
that’s perfect for the whole family, ours is the only

Drawing upon Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale,
Carolina Ballet Principal Guest Choreographer Lynne
Taylor-Corbett conjures an enchanting vision of the
young mermaid with an alluring voice, who will risk
it all for love in a daring deal with a vengeful sea
witch. Featuring an original score by Michael Moricz,
this program is paired with Who Cares?, George
Balanchine’s tribute to George Gershwin’s most
memorable music.

Blossoming. Burning. Vibrant. Chilling.
Humanity reflected in Mother Nature.
Choreographed in the neoclassic style by Artistic
Director Robert Weiss, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons is a
celebration of nature’s enduring cycle that captures the
color and emotion of each season. Having sold out in its
premiere run in 2014, this ballet is sure to electrify again.
“[Bursting] forth with shocking vividness, teeming with
undeniable life force … Its thrumming, interlocked motion
making a powerful engine for dance.”
