Ludlow and The Shropshire Hills visitsouthshropshire.co.uk tsouthshropshire.co.uk 2008 Ludlow and The Shropshire Hills Introduction T ake a journey of discovery through the protected landscape of The Shropshire Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Experience its contrasts; tranquil valleys, ancient woods, lush dales, flower rich meadows and mysterious hills. Wherever you decide to roam, wildlife abounds in The Shropshire Hills: curlew, red grouse and skylark breed on the exposed hilltops. Buzzards soar above and dippers and kingfishers frequent the streams in the valleys below. Walk, ride or cycle and experience miles of total solitude amongst glorious scenery. Sample local produce from the farmers markets and browse among the small shops offering personal service, a warm welcome and a wealth of choice of clothes, gifts, hardware, antiques, food and much more. Ludlow has something for everyone with its shops, cafés, markets, restaurants, the castle, the river and the hills. You will find it somewhere to come back to regularly, for ‘just another visit’. “wildlife abounds in The Shropshire Hills” Main image: Pole Bank Top right: The Feathers Hotel, Ludlow 2 Introduction www.visitsouthshropshire.co.uk The Shropshire Hills inspire many fine artists and artisans who use traditional methods and materials to produce new and traditional crafts. Textiles, furniture, paintings, jewellery, ceramics, sculptures and other artefacts are displayed in the shops, studios, craft centres and galleries around the area. Whatever you choose to see and do, come and unwind in a place where nature’s influence on man is always evident, where people live and work in spectacularly beautiful surroundings, a place where communities still thrive and will give you a sincere welcome. And upon those fields and open spaces there’s a lot of growing and grazing going on. Much of this delightful produce is available from the gate in farm shops, in regular farmers markets and in the shops, pubs and restaurants that you will find in many of the local towns and villages. This locally grown and produced food has helped develop Ludlow’s reputation for gastronomy, enticing chefs from across the country to bring their skills into the area and offer quality repasts to all. It’s not just the Michelin starred restaurants that produce fine food. Call in to any of the small cafés, tearooms, pubs and restaurants and they will all have their specialities, locally produced or home-made. Many display the ‘Local to Ludlow’ logo and will be able to tell you exactly where certain ingredients come from, sometimes the field across the valley. The quality of the locally produced meat, game, fruit, vegetables, dairy products and preserves is of prime importance and visitors will be able to taste and appreciate food and drink at its best. Microbreweries are spread across the county from Hobsons in Cleobury Mortimer, heading west to the Ludlow Brewing Company and the Corfton Brewery in the Corvedale, passing Woods Brewery in Wistanstow and on out to Bishop’s Castle with the Six Bells and The Three Tuns Breweries. These fine ales are celebrated, not just in the local pubs, but also during the festivals held in Ludlow, Church Stretton, Clun and Bishop’s Castle throughout the year. Visit us during one of the many festivals and enjoy food, real ale, locally made products, music or the arts. The local communities have much to offer and nature’s influence is seen in all they produce, from beautiful furniture to fine food from the Green Man Festival to the Michaelmas Fair. Ludlow’s festivals have become world renowned; with Shakespeare in the castle in the summer, a wonderful feast at the Marches Food and Drink Festival in the autumn and the atmospheric Medieval Fayre in November. Come and stay in welcoming accommodation, eat fabulous food, sample the local brew and enjoy the wide variety of events taking place throughout the year. You will wish you’d booked to stay longer. 6 Fantastic Food Main image: Shropshire Produce Top right: Local to Ludlow Middle right: Ludlow Food Fair Bottom right: Culinary Delights “It’s not just the Michelin starred restaurants that produce fine food” www.visitsouthshropshire.co.uk Fantastic Food 7 Ludlow “England’s finest market town” - Country Life Explore medieval streets L udlow is often called ‘the perfect historic town’ and with nearly 500 listed buildings and a Norman castle it has always been a working market town serving the needs of a large rural area. Explore the pattern of the original medieval streets and discover what links Ludlow’s past to the present. Ludlow’s heart is centred around the castle, a major administrative centre in the 16th century, from where the border area known as The Marches, was governed. Many well-known houses such as Castle Lodge and The Feathers were built at this time. Like most listed buildings in Ludlow, the castle is still in use today hosting the annual Ludlow Festival with its open air Shakespearean production, the nationally acclaimed Food and Drink Festival and a Medieval Christmas Fayre. The parish church of St. Laurence reflects the town’s prosperity in the 14th and 15th centuries. It is one of England’s ‘Greater Churches’ with fine misericords and stained glass. Climb to the top of the tower for stunning views. Ludlow later became a fashionable social centre and county families built elegant brick houses. Broad Street, with the Buttercross at the top and the Broadgate at the bottom, is certainly one of the country’s finest streets. The Assembly Rooms, built in 1840, are as much in use today as a busy multi-purpose Arts Centre. Ludlow has always been primarily a market town and this tradition continues today with a lively market on four days a week in addition to regular Antique and Flea markets, Garden Fairs, Book and Craft markets. At the monthly ‘Local Produce Market’ the market square is filled with stalls selling a mouth-watering range of local food and drink. With a wide range of independent shops from butchers, bakers and bookshops to shops selling clothing, fine foods and antiques, Ludlow offers a top quality shopping experience. If you’re in need of refreshment there’s a tempting selection of places to eat and drink, from historic inns selling local beers to acclaimed restaurants using the best of local produce. While in Ludlow take time to visit the Museum in Castle Street. There are exhibitions telling the story of Ludlow from the building of the Castle to the present day and ‘Reading the Rocks’ celebrates Ludlow’s contribution to international geology. The River Teme is very much a part of Ludlow’s history and prosperity. Five weirs produced power for a series of watermills. Today the Teme provides an area for recreation and relaxation, with rowing boats, the ‘Bread Walk’ riverside path, and the Dinham Millenium Green. Across the river is Whitcliffe Common, the town’s common land in the Middle Ages. Today it is an unspoilt leisure amenity with paths affording fine panoramic views of the town. There is no doubt that the quality of life in Ludlow makes it a good place to live and to visit and why Ludlow has become the UK’s first ‘Cittaslow’ or Slow City, as well as headquarters of the Slow Food Movement in the UK. Take time to explore and enjoy all that Ludlow has to offer. You will certainly want to return. 8 Ludlow Main image: Broad Street Top right: Ludlow Festival Bottom right: The Buttercross “a tempting selection of places to shop, eat and drink” www.visitsouthshropshire.co.uk Visitor Information Centre Located in the market square – contact [email protected] or 01584 875053. A friendly medieval town B ishop’s Castle is a friendly medieval town with a fascinating architectural mixture. Although a small town, it boasts two breweries, good pubs and cafés and a host of individual shops and galleries. There are festivals throughout the year. Its past is celebrated by two museums, one of local history and one about the famous Bishop’s Castle railway. The gradient of the top part of the main street is 1 in 6 – no wonder there is a House on Crutches! Even higher up is the site of the old castle where you can see the remains of the castle wall and enjoy the views of The Shropshire Hills – this is excellent walking and cycling country. The ridges of the Stiperstones and the Long Mynd lie to the north east while to the west Offa’s Dyke runs along the old border. The clock on St. John’s Church, at the bottom of town, is one of the few remaining one-handed clocks in the country. Perhaps this one handed clock really does take its time, leaving the townsfolk with more time for fun and joining in! It is still a rural working market town with regular sheep and cattle auctions and markets in the Town Hall and Market Square. For 800 years the Welsh drovers brought livestock along the Kerry Ridgeway to Bishop’s Castle. To slake the drovers’ thirst they have been brewing ale here ever since. In a county renowned for its brew pubs, Bishop’s Castle is top of the hops. 10 Bishop’s Castle Main image: High Street Top right: Brewing Bottom right: Linley Beeches “In a county renowned for its brew pubs, Bishop’s Castle is top of the hops.” www.visitsouthshropshire.co.uk Visitor Information Point Located at Old Time, High Street – contact [email protected] or 01588 638467. The ancient, heather-clad Long Mynd stands above and due to its beauty the town has been a destination for tourists since Victorian times. At the foot of the Long Mynd lies Carding Mill Valley with its meandering rocky stream and wide grassy banks, which delight children generation after generation. The Carding Mill was built in 1812 to comb wool fibres from fleeces ready for spinning. Today The National Trust manages the area and provides a café, shop and information centre. The centre of the town is directly accessible from the railway station and from here it is an easy walk to a vast expanse of undulating landscape inhabited by wild horses, buzzards, skylarks and sheep. At weekends and bank holidays in the summer it’s possible to catch The Shropshire Hills Shuttle Bus from the town allowing visitors to explore without having to drive. The town has plenty of accommodation and a wide choice of cafés, restaurants and hostelries. There are several regular markets held in the Square and numerous interesting independent shops from an award winning deli to traditional hardware shop, a specialist walkers’ shop to a three-storey antiques emporium. Close by are the neighbouring settlements of All Stretton and Little Stretton, each with their own charm and cosy pubs. Church Stretton offers a great base for exploring further afield as well as access to outdoor activities such as gliding, paragliding, riding, golf, archery and fishing. Acton Scott Historic Working Farm is 15 minutes drive and Shrewsbury, Telford and Ludlow are within a 30-45 minute drive. 12 Church Stretton Main image: View of the Caer Caradoc Top right: Market Day Bottom right: Carding Mill Valley “Church Stretton nestles amongst some of the most dramatic and spectacular hills in the British Isles” www.visitsouthshropshire.co.uk Visitor Information Centre Located next to the Library in Church Street. John Betjeman described its High Street as a “A long airy curving street of brick Georgian houses and shops interspersed with genuine half-timber, the Rea Brook making a splash at the bottom of the hill.” Here, shops have retained their facades along with a level of service and local produce that belongs to a bygone age. This small rural town still has traditional shops and its own brewery with 6 local ales. St Mary’s Church with its late 13th century twisted wooden spire is one of three in England. The 19th century refurbished Market Hall houses the town’s millennium tapestry and a Visitor Information Point. Whether your idea of relaxation is ambling, walking, cycling or riding, Cleobury Country offers you some glorious scenery and wonderful old buildings. At the Market Hall you can get guides for outdoor activities and places to visit. You can fish the Rea in permitted sections and maybe one day catch a salmon. Few small towns can boast a 27-hole golf course and the superb sports facilities at Lacon Childe School. Whatever you choose to do you can experience three of England’s greenest shires from the hidden gem that is Cleobury Mortimer. 14 Cleobury Mortimer Main image: St Mary’s Church Top right: Bike rides are popular Bottom right: Cleobury town “You can fish the Rea in permitted sections and maybe one day catch a salmon” www.visitsouthshropshire.co.uk Visitor Information Point In the Market Hall, Church Street – view the tapestry of key buildings and societies interpreted on a touch screen computer. Surrounded by an amphitheatre of hills, the visitor arrives so gently, by gravity alone, at the bridge and the river. There is no better place to interpret the town. For nearly six hundred years the town has contented itself with this narrow crossing designed for the packhorse. One of Housman’s ‘quietest places under the sun’ begins here. Close by, the wooden bridge beckons, inviting access to the Castle. There has long been much worth defending here. Iron Age hillforts, Offa’s Dyke and an imposing Norman castle still remain. Now in ruins it stands as a reminder of past cross-border battles. St George’s churchyard is another quiet spot, part of the Caring for God’s Acre project. By the path is the grave of playwright, the ‘Angry Young Man’, John Osborne who lived nearby. The interior of the church can rival nature’s palette. It is ablaze with brightly coloured kneelers. The annual celebrations begin in May with the Green Man Festival. Mummers perform in The Square where there is also a Sunday Market. Morris Dancers and a Craft Fair also feature and Frostie, Queen of Cold challenges the Green Man in the Battle on the Bridge. In August, the Clun Carnival and Show incorporates a week-long series of events and in October, the annual Beer Festival is a great crowd puller. People would travel miles to have the choice of walks that Clun has on its doorstep. Take Offa’s Dyke path for example. Many visitors will be more interested in the archaeology than in pitting themselves against the elements. Llanfair Hill is the Dyke’s highest point and where it is “at its finest and most inspiring.” For another fine view, scramble up to Bury Ditches, near Clunton. When severe storms blew down many trees, the Forestry Commission got the message and cleared the whole site, revealing one of the finest hill forts in Britain. 16 Clun Main image: Clun Bridge Top right: Stop in for a coffee Bottom right: Clun Castle “People would travel miles to have the choice of walks that Clun has on its doorstep” www.visitsouthshropshire.co.uk Visitor Information Point Clun Garage, High Street. Please be aware that ratings may change throughout the year. Ludlow Guest accommodation (including B&Bs, Guest Houses, Inns, Farmhouses and Restaurants with Rooms) tends to be personally run by the owners. All the national assessing bodies (VisitBritain, VisitScotland, VisitWales and the AA) now assess Hotels and Guest Accommodation to the same criteria, and award one to five stars. The star ratings reflect the overall quality of the experience. At the higher levels hotels and guest accommodation owners have to provide certain additional facilities and services. VisitBritain also give Gold or Silver awards and the AA give highly commended yellow stars to guest accommodation and red stars to hotels in recognition of exceptional quality at all levels. Professional assessors visit every year, carrying out a routine day visit or an overnight stay. For serviced accommodation there are two separate schemes; one for hotels and one for guest accommodation. Hotels have to be licensed, offer dinner at least five nights a week and have all rooms ensuite or with private facilities. VisitBritain, VisitWales and VisitScotland also assess self catering accommodation to the same criteria and award one to five stars.
