If you live in the Midwest , then you already know that its been a cold spring so far. We all know that fur prices hinge on the weather as the most important factor to our industry. Russia and China has had it worse than us over here in the USA. There have been reports noting it has been one of the coldest winters in the past 25 years for them, driving fur sales through the roof. Muskrats - Muskrats are easy to catch and there are a lot of them in the back woods streams and bogs of America. Muskrat habitats tend to be rivers, streams, lakes and ponds. Muskrats mature very quickly making them very plentiful. On average a Muskrat is fully mature around 6 months to year old. Raccoon - Raccoons are another great choice for the beginner trapper due to the fact there are so many and you don’t have to go to great lengths to find them. Usually raccoons can be found where ever there is trash or a food source of some kind. Remember when trapping raccoons that they travel in groups and to set your traps accordingly. With below average freezing temperatures in China and Russia, fur sales for Raccoons, Mink, Muskrats and Fox have been 100% or close to it. Auctions to this point have been Thank You, a huge success and have exceeded Pcs Outdoors Staff a lot of expectations. You have been going HARD since October or November. Trapping, skinning, fleshing, stretching and not much sleep. Right about now a little slow down is welcomed. All your fur is put-up, now is the time you can neat’n up your shed, inventory your traps that’s always a depressing thing. Just because you are reminded again of the traps you had stolen, but you just keep going. Trying to get caught up with my chores and honey-do’s that got put on the back burner. While I was gone trapping, my incentive to get this done is spring beaver trapping, you don’t have much time in the spring to get your quota, from home. I sure love what I do. That’s the only way I know how to do it. God Bless Rusty Hale Rusty Cleaning his fur shed. “I sure love what I do” so there is no time for much else. Run hard, stay up late, and start all over at day light setting new ground; that’s what it takes. Did I mention getting wet and cold, and you’re 50 miles V O LU M E 1 , I S S U E 3 P C S O U T D O O R S T R A P P E R T R I B UNE Ask Rusty, John, & Andrew! Trapping Tips & Other Tidbits! Using a GPS to mark traps is becoming more popular to locate traps after being set. This will ensure you do not leave a trap behind after season and it gets picked up by a game warden or worse an animal gets caught up in it. Having a survival bracelet is very important tool to have in your trappers bag or on your wrist when venturing into the woods. Beaver carcasses are great for bobcat and lynx baits. (Q) Is it necessary to stake down a live cage trap? (A) Yes, a cage trap can be flipped over and opened up for the animal to escape. Staking it down is less likely to hurt the animal in case it does roll it over as well. PAGE 5 (Q) How long should I let my traps set up in the wax, while waxing my traps? (A) Traps should probably sit in the wax between 15-30 seconds. This ensure the trap gets warmed up and gets a nice even coating of wax on the trap. (Q) How far do Bobcat typically range? (A) Males range further than females. Males can range up to 6-8 square miles, while females are about half of that. Robert Wigton Trapping with JimSpencer Contest Winner!
