Looking Forward to a New Season
Welcome to the first edition of Our Awbrey
Glen. We trust you will like the new format
and content of the newsletter and the articles
from your fellow members. Going forward, this
will be a seasonal publication with articles from
varying membership committees and groups.
On March 14, the golf course opened for the
season! The players coming off the course were
amazed at how awesome the course looked.
Doug Feher, Golf Course Superintendent, and
his staff did a great job cleaning up all the winter
debris and getting the course ready for play.
With a few weeks of warmer weather on the
way, the course will be greening up quickly!
We are excited to announce a new member of
the Awbrey Glen team! Barbara Malcom joined
about our new format!
This newsletter will be published threefour times a year, however, the Awbrey
Glen website is the go-to-place for the latest
information about club activities. We
encourage you to log in and stay logged
in to stay abreast of all that is happening.
Please send us your photos (simply email
[email protected]) from club social and
recreational events so we can post them on
the private site and where appropriate, use
them in social media. Speaking of photos,
is yours on the online member directory?
If not, please send us a current one. Also,
check to be sure your contact information
and member preferences are correct.
In addition to the website and seasonal
newsletter, we send you three email updates
weekly. One is The Week of... telling you
about upcoming Explorer activities. Another is about the Restaurant specials and
menu for the week. And the third is the
Update from the Golf Shop.
us in late February as our new Membership
Director. Barbara has spent the last four years
in the Portland area working for the North
Clackamas Chamber of Commerce as Membership Specialist and the Gresham Area Chamber
of Commerce as the Programs and Membership
Manager.
Prior to moving to Portland, Malcom was very
active in the community of Bend, where she
worked for the Bend Chamber of Commerce as
Vice President of Programs and Events. She was
also the owner of Impressive Events, where she
organized fundraising events for COCC Foundation scholarships, Boys and Girls Club and St.
Charles Saints Benefit. Barb was the founder of
Balloons Over Bend, as well.
Barb is extremely excited about returning to
Central Oregon (Lynda Weinstock) with all its
natural beauty, outdoor activities, and the expanding cultural and sporting events. She loves
to golf, hike, bike, climb mountains, run with
her dog, and spend time with friends.
Have you given Barbara the names of your
friends or associates who may be interested in
joining Awbrey Glen? She has all the tools and
material you need to hand deliver or send to
those that might be interested. We appreciate
the referrals that help your club grow!
The club would like to extend a special thank
you to all the members who participated in and
helped organize all the winter gaming activities at the Club. There was plenty of bridge,
mahjong, and other cards games played while
watching the snow fall.
There are so many reasons to celebrate this year
at Awbrey Glen. Thank you to all for the support, time, and talents given by the members of
Awbrey Glen and all of you who serve on the
various committees and the Board. Words cannot express the gratitude the staff and management team have for those of you who volunteer
your time to the Club—thank you.
explorers | by bill long
Awbrey Glen members
don’t sit still in the winter.
The Explorers organize regular activities all year long
with special events during
the non-golfing season.
In the winter of 2013/2014,
the Explorers at Awbrey
Glen made the most of a
modest snow pack with
snowshoeing, cross country
skiing, downhill skiing and
snowmobiling, in addition
to touring one of our local
distillers. These activities
were led by various club
members and were enjoyed
by all participants.
Our Spring and Summer/
Fall schedule is already
becoming quite active with
group outings scheduled
to the Olympic Peninsula,
Timberline Lodge, Diamond Lake, Cannon Beach,
Hood River, Elevations
Restaurant and other interesting destinations. We
encourage all club members
to take note of the weekly
e-bulletin from the club
which discusses the upcoming explorer activities.
Come explore the local and
regional area with you club
friends.
bridge group
Duplicate bridge has been an Awbrey Glen event since about
2000. It started with a few tables and has grown to 10 tables
with as many as eight pairs on a waiting list! A typical play
day involves Awbrey Glen members along with non-members.
Golf season governs when we play; this year the bridge season
started on Tuesday, November 12, and will end on March 25.
The range of player expertise is wide from those who have only
played a few hands of duplicate to those who have hundreds
of master points. The primary goal of the event is certainly to
play bridge (Ron Seals) but our main reason to be together is to
enjoy meeting and playing with new people. And, we certainly
learn from one another.
Since this is a non-sanctioned game, there is no director but
rather a coordinator. All players pay to play and a portion
of this goes towards weekly prize money and supplies. Nonmembers pay a bit more to offset expenses for cookies, coffee,
tea, linens and room use.
This is a terrific way to meet new friends and spend a snowy
Tuesday playing bridge during the winter. Thank you, Louann
Thomas for organizing this over the years.

A winter’s afternoon spent playing bridge.
In addition to duplicate play, there is a growing group of social
bridge players. Kay Bernard organizes this set of players for
a weekly game and even brings in the local expert bridge
teacher for some instruction.
Other days of the week you will find the restaurant busy with
Mahjong, Canasta, Hand and Foot and other card or board
games being played. Our club is so much more than golf. It is
a community of like-minded individuals and families wanting
to have fun no matter what the weather.

Building Community
ACE award winner
We are happy to announce that
Steve Baker has been named
the February Awbrey Glen
Golf Club ACE (Awbrey’s Circle of Excellence) award winner! Steve has been working at
Awbrey Glen for nine years as
the morning Sous Chef.
The person who nominated
Steve wrote: “I would like to
nominate our Sous Chef, Steve
Baker, for our next ACE award.
The fact that Steve loves to
watch cooking channels and
experiment with recipes and
flavors is certainly evident in
the skill he brings to cooking
here at our club. We call him
our “Soup Guru” because of
his very creative and delicious
soups. Members are always
asking for his recipes, but, as
is the case with many talented
cooks, there often is no written
recipe because it really is a bit of
this and a dash of that according to his taste. Steve continues
this creativity when developing his lunch specials and it is
always fun to see what flavor
profiles he comes up with.
Steve is also our “go to” guy
when Darrin is unavailable and
he does this well, from ordering,
menu planning and inventory
controls to general fix it issues
in the kitchen. We rely on Steve
in so many ways and he is a real
asset to our Awbrey Glen staff.”
Also receiving a nominations
were Rachael Rasmussen
(Restaurant Server), Audrey
Bork (Restaurant Server), Kelly
Yzaguirre (Banquet Coordinator), Nick Warren (Assistant
Golf Professional), and Brandon Johns (Lead Line Cook).
Congratulations to all ACE
nominees.
“Come for the golf, stay for the friendships”…
the “community” of Awbrey Glen is a true
differentiator for our club. The Ambassador
Committee plays an important role in helping
to define and foster that community.
For new members, the ability to quickly meet
other club members and become engaged in
the numerous events and activities is crucial.
For longer-term members, staying connected,
involved and active is equally important.
These are two areas of focus for our Committee.
The Committee began the year by gathering
feedback from new members and former Ambassadors, listening to the perspectives and
experiences of those who had recently participated in the program. Based on the feedback
received, we fine-tuned the process by making
several modifications.
We learned that assigning Ambassadors to
new members with similar personalities,
interests, life experiences, etc. is critical to
successful relationships and new member
introduction to the Club community. As a
result, both parties now complete a questionnaire on the front-end, providing important
information such as demographics, hobbies,
etc. This information is now used to ensure
appropriate matching.
We also received feedback that social events
are extremely helpful for new members. In
addition to the annual summer event, this
year (Maya Bauer) we are offering three no-host
happy hour social events for new members to
spend time with the Ambassadors, the Board
of Directors and the Membership Committee.
These are scheduled every other month from
April through October.
Other modifications this year include the
development of Ambassador Guidelines to
manage new member expectations and ensure
continuity and consistency between Ambas-
sadors, a defined follow-up process and a
structured proactive “reach-out” process to
check in and re-connect with longer-term
members.
We are excited about the changes that are being made to the program and feel optimistic
that as a Committee we can help ensure that
club members have a positive and rewarding
experience at Awbrey Glen.
If you are interested in participating in this
Committee as an Ambassador, please contact
Sue Thompson.
the restaurant
Happy Spring from your Restaurant staff!
You can now make dinner reservations online! Simply go to the Dining section on the
member website or our Facebook page and
click on “reservations”. We are excited to be
able to provide you with this new convenient
benefit. Visit the dining page frequently to
read about weekly specials and events.
For the public, we have added Open Table, the
online reservation system to the website. This
is a marketing tool we hope will attract folks
to the restaurant that were unaware that we
are open to the public. However for members,
we encourage you to go to the member website or call the restaurant directly.
We want to welcome the newest member of
our “Awbrey Glen Family”. Banquet Manager
Kelly Yzauirre delivered a baby boy named,
Nico Kepa, on St. Patrick’s Day, weighing in
at 8 pounds and 20 inches long. Look for his
photo on our Facebook page.
As we gear up for summer you will be seeing
new staff members. Please welcome two new
servers, Aubrey (and no, her middle name is
not Glen) who comes to us from Massachusetts and Chris who most recently resided in
Hawaii.
Darrin and I are excited about our upcoming
summer season and look forward to seeing all
of you!

Our Mission
What is the Awbrey Glen Green Committee? It is a cross section
group of 8 of your fellow members who meet monthly and serve
volunteer two-year terms. Committee members of varying golfing abilities and demographics are desired to ensure that decisions benefit the majority of the golfing membership.
The Green Committee’s role to see that golf course maintenance
and course improvement remains a high priority. It is not
responsible for the design of the golf course. That responsibility rests with the course designer. Your Green Committee is an
advisory committee that serves an important role in developing
policy as well as long-range initiatives.
Early season:
1. Selectively repair stairs leading up to the #5 tee complex
2. Remove wire, posts etc…from around the greens:
3. Clean-up elk damage using every available method to achieve
the quickest cleanup possible.
4. Fertilize fairways and tees in late March to promote vigorous
recovery from elk damage
5. In April begin repairing the Elk urine spots by seeding them
at earliest possible opportunity.
6. Prepare and seed weak/bare turf areas in fairways, starting
with holes #2, 7, & 17.
7. Complete work on #12 cart path
Some of our functions include:
8. Learning Center tree trimming and mowing of collection
areas
• Acting as a liaison between members and course management.
9. Replenishing bunkers with sand
• Assisting the Golf Course Superintendent and General Manager
in an advisory, budgetary and policy-making capacity
10. Selective tree trimming or removal to improve the health
and vitality of certain greens
• Acting as a the steward of the Golf Course Master Plan to be
certain that any changes to the course are consistent with the
rules of golf, are consistent with the Master Plan and do not result
in unanticipated expense.
• Developing long-range plans for the golf course. This may include (Ken Jackson) identifying course components (i.e. irrigation
system, maintenance facility, design features) that need improvement, or areas of the course that require extra maintenance or
repair.
• Communicating to members about a variety of golf course matters including proper golf course etiquette e.g., 90 degree cart use,
pitch mark repair, course opening and closing criteria etc.
• Working with the Golf Course Superintendent and General
Manager to help set course improvement priorities. Some of the
improvements planned for the 2014 season include:
As the Season Progresses:
1. Continue to work on weak/bare turf areas by improving the
irrigation coverage, aerifying, seeding, adding soil amendments, improving drainage, and limiting cart traffic.
2. Cut out small sections of cart paths and add gravel
3. Determine if we have sufficient in-house resources to level
selected tee boxes
4. Reviewing the rope moving process in an effort to limit cart
damage.
We encourage you to contact the committee via e-mail with any
questions, concerns or comments.

men’s golf committee | by john maniscalco
The eight members of the
Men’s Golf Committee have
been extremely busy this past
winter. The Committee has
continued to meet and plan
for the 2014 golf season and
has created a schedule of
events that surpasses those of
any previous year at Awbrey
Glen. We believe our men’s
activities for 2014 are the
most comprehensive and var-
ied of any golf club in Central
Oregon.
In an effort to make the golf
experience at Awbrey Glen
as enjoyable as possible, the
Committee has focused not
only on the seasoned member, but has placed an added
emphasis on newer members as well. Our number
one goal is to ensure that all
male members are aware of
the complete assortment of
programs and events offered
by the Club, and as a result,
feel welcome and encouraged
to participate.
Not only has the committee
scheduled and refined our local annual golf tournaments
and weekly men’s golf events,
but we have also arranged for
three separate golf outings
to other great venues in the
Pacific Northwest, including
Pumpkin Ridge, Trysting
Tree, and the ever-popular
Bandon Dunes. We feel
strongly that the variety
and design of planned golf
activities for 2014 will surely
stimulate more excitement
than ever about men’s golf at
Awbrey Glen.
