From Our General Manager/COO
ongratulations to Glen Gives for another
incredible event and fundraising. The 10th
annual Glen Gives “Goes Global” dinner and
auction were enjoyed by over 130 members and
guests. Needy families in Central Oregon will
once again be given much-needed help thanks to
your support. Thank you to the many members
who contributed countless hours in preparing for
this event.
Awbrey Glen Golf Club is a thriving active Club
with great members who are supportive of not
only this Club but our community. This in part
helps to understand why we have had over 45 new
members join since April 1. “My Awbrey Glen”
is different for everyone, but I believe there is one
common thread amongst all; you came for the
golf (or pool, social activities, events, etc…) but
you stay for the friendships. Thank you!
Thanks to the efforts of Dennis Sienko and nine
member contributors, the Club is now the proud
owner of the original painting of the new fifth
hole. Dennis spent a considerable amount of time
working with the artist, members, and the framing for this artwork. Dennis, thank you for the
great idea and for the monies raised at Glen Gives
with the auctioning of print #1 (out of 10) of this
painting.

As the golf and summer event season winds
down, we’d like to thank everyone who helped
organize the various tournaments, served on the
event committees, led hiking, biking, or canoe
outings, Explorer outings, etc… and all of you
that participated in the various club events. It
has been an active summer with still more fun to
come! Please keep an eye on your email and the
website for more information.
The Board of Director election materials have
been mailed to all Equity Members as of October
1. Please remember to have your ballot in no later
than October 31 in order for it to be counted.
The candidate information forms submitted by
the nominees are posted on the website.
New Members Reception: Held on the evening
of August 23, 2013 pool side, we had a great turnout of 50+ New Members who had the chance to
meet other fellow members and enjoy some of Chef
Darrin’s summertime recipe favorites. Thanks go
to all of you New Members who have made 2013
a very successful membership enrollment year!

A
s the fall golf season is upon us, now
is the time to send an invitation for
a round golf at Awbrey Glen to all those
friends of yours that didn’t get a chance to
play the golf course with you this year. With
our very reasonable golf Guest rates and the
golf course in excellent condition, feel free to
show off your Club to friends, co-workers,
and extended family.
Thank you to everyone who participated
this year in the weekly sweeps and major
club tournaments. It was great to see new
faces participating in Member-Guest events,
Guest Days, and Junior Golf events such as
PGA Junior Leagues, etc. Hopefully you
got the chance to meet new members and
socialize with old friends.
For those of you who are not familiar with
the Awbrey Glen Explorers, all you have to
do is read the weekly emails on Tuesdays
throughout the year to learn all about the
extensive list of non-golfing activities that
are planned each month. As we transition

all is here and with it comes shorter
days and cooler nights. The shorter
days still offer some outstanding golf
weather, but the cooler nights bring back
the potential for early morning frost and tee
time delays.
Frost is essentially frozen dew, and forms
when the temperature is near or at the freezing mark. When this happens, the turf is
left in a fragile, frozen state. Walking on or
driving a cart over grass in this condition will
basically shatter the cells within the plant.
When this occurs no immediate damage
will be visible, rather emerging as black or
brown areas as the plant dies out two or
three days later. Luckily, it doesn’t take too
much of a rise in temperature to soften up
the frost to the point where it’s safe to travel
on without any damage.
So thanks for your patience and understanding with any delays you might encounter this
fall due to frost on the course. This will help
us maintain our quality of turf and save time
and money on needless repairs.

Green Committee Update
T
he Awbrey Glen Green Committee is
a group of eight of your fellow members who serve volunteer two-year terms. It
represents a cross section of members. Players
of varying golfing abilities and demographics
are desired to ensure that decisions benefit
the majority of the golfing membership.
It is the Green Committee’s role to see
that golf course maintenance and course
improvement remains a high priority
relative to other functions of the club.
However, it is not the responsibility of the
Green Committee to be involved in the
day-to-day management of the golf course
(mowing patterns, fertilization schedules,
etc.). Additionally, the Green Committee
is not responsible for the design of the golf
course. That responsibility rests with the
course designer. Your Green Committee is
an advisory committee that serves an important role in developing policy as well as long
range initiatives.
Some of our functions include:
• Addressing member concerns.
• Acting as a liaison between members and
course management.
• Assisting the Green Superintendent &
General Manager in an advisory, budgetary
and policy-making capacity.
• Acting as a the steward of the Golf Course
Master Plan to be certain that any changes
to the course are consistent with the rules of
golf, are consistent with the Master Plan and
do not result in unanticipated expense.
• Developing long-range plans for the golf
course. This may include identifying course
components (i.e. irrigation system, maintenance facility, design features) that need improvement, or areas of the course that require
extra maintenance and repetitive repair.
• Communicating to members about a variety of golf course matters, including proper
golf course etiquette, such as 90-degree cart
use, pitch mark repair, course opening and
closing criteria, etc.

such awesome entertainment. He has been
an integral part of helping to make these
events so successful. Thank you, Bob!
Mark your calendars for our annual Beer

past, this has been called both Oktoberfest
and Novemberfest, but no matter the name,
this is a “don’t miss it event”!

So many fruits are seasonal, like Meyer lemons, pomegranates and blood oranges. They
can be purchased at their peak of ripeness
for immediate use or put in an ice cube tray
and frozen. Use as a base for poultry glazes,
introduce into wild game sauces such as
blood orange and merlot reduction for duck,
or a brown sauce infused with a little red
wine and pomegranate juice for elk. How
about your favorite vodka over ice cubes of
Meyer lemon or pomegranate juice during
the middle of winter—yum!

AGWGA Update
A
s the golfing season comes to a close,
it is time to reflect on the successful
2013 golf season. Seventy-six ladies joined
AGWGA, and all who played in Thursday
‘Sweeps’ enjoyed a new format and variety
of games; on most play days over 35 participated. All tournaments were well attended,
most themes enjoyed by all, and the weather
cooperated most days. Congratulations to
all the weekly and tournament winners!
Your Executive Board met monthly with
management to ensure the women’s golf
events continued smoothly.
Join us for the Closer on Thursday, October 10. We start with an AGWGA business
meeting, election of next year’s officers, and
presentation of yearly awards at 11:30 a.m.
during lunch. There will be a 1:00 p.m.
shotgun with a shamble format. All women
of Awbrey Glen Golf Club are invited to sign
up on ForeTees for this event.
W
e are happy to announce August’s
Awbrey Glen Golf Club Awbrey’s
Circle of Excellence (ACE) award winner:
Dawn Evermann has
been working at Awbrey
Glen since March of
2011 as our Pool Manager. The person who
nominated Dawn wrote:
“Dawn is an exemplary employee here at
Awbrey Glen. She is always in a great mood
and that upbeat personality is infectious! She is
well liked by both our members and our staff.
Dawn does a great job managing the pool, but
she is also willing to help out anywhere she is
needed. She has hosted, bussed tables, driven
the beverage cart, and worked in the snack bar.
She does not like to be idle and is always looking for things to do.
Recently, a member raved about her “above
and beyond” experience when Dawn was
working in the Snack Bar. She and another
member had grandkids with them and called
in a rather large order to pick up at the turn.
They were playing a bit slow and worried they
might have to wait. However, Dawn had
every detail taken care of, including bagging
it all up so they literally could simply pick up
and go.”
This is just one example of why Dawn
deserves to be our ACE of the Month. Please
help me in congratulating Dawn as the
August ACE award winner!
