Our June Theme: As we celebrated our "Spring is All Around You" theme in Language Arts last month, we explored a variety of books about nature. Miles and Abdel shared an "I Spy Nature" book at the 'reading center.' Spring Festival: Saturday, June 2nd WHO: All Kinder Works children & their families & friends are invited to a celebration at Kinder Works! WHAT: A moon-bounce, festival food, balloons, a special SHOW at 1 pm, and more surprises... including a raffle (for a free week of camp)! WHEN: Drop in anytime between 11 AM and 2 PM on Saturday, June 2nd WHY: To celebrate a wonderful school year Please join us for this exciting day of family fun! CELEBRATING CHILDREN'S DAY The World Conference for the Well-being of Children in Geneva, Switzerland proclaimed June 1st to be International Children's Day in 1925. It is celebrated on various days in many places around the world, to promote mutual exchange and understanding among children, and secondly to initiate action to benefit and promote the welfare of the world's children. It was also chosen as the day to celebrate childhood. Here in America, June 10 has been designated as "Children's Day" for 2012... but we are going to celebrate it for the entire month! We will look at children all around the world, and what children have done, and can do. We will talk about our EQ projects this year that have helped other children, and think of ways to continue helping others. And of course, our own children at Kinder Works will be celebrated with parades, displays of achievements, gift-giving, special treats, and ceremonies honoring childhood. We end this school year with some final inspiration from our year's theme song, which reminds us to always honor and celebrate our connection with our earth, and with one another: "And we are all connected to each other, In a circle, in a hoop that never ends." Our Teddy Bears enjoyed playing at the water table on a sunny day on the playground during Gym & Music. PORTFOLIOS DISTRIBUTED: Thursday & Friday, June 7th & 8th To culminate our year of progress, we have your child’s portfolio ready for you to take home! You got a sneak peek at parent-teacher conferences; now it’s time to take home and cherish your child’s growth and achievements this year, demonstrated through the work that was gathered in each curriculum area from September through May. Enjoy this collection of Preschool masterpieces! Miss Gormley and the Bumble Bees demonstrated teamwork and patience as they constructed a "marble works" maze in Math & Science. Logan held the "Dali Doll" as we learned about Surrealist Artist, Salvador Dali. We looked closely looked at some of his works, which often contained strange, dream-like imagery, and admired his attention to detail; in particular we enjoyed "The Persistence of Memory" and "The Phantom Cart." EQ Show & Tell: Monday & Tuesday, June 11th & 12th, "Child's Choice" Our “Celebrate Children's Day” theme inspires us to reflect on our own preferences.... recognizing that we are all individuals with unique talents, tastes, and interests! For this month's "EQ Show & Tell" sharing experience, please ask your child to choose an item or activity that s/he really enjoys and gets excited about (such as a toy or tool, collected item, or a drawing or photograph depicting the activity or cherished item, etc). Allowing each child to share their joy will be a great way to "celebrate" each individual, while continuing to build their relationship skills as they practice speaking and listening to one another. Please send your child ready to share on MONDAY, June 11th and TUESDAY, June 12th at our final "EQ Show & Tell" of the school year! "Bee" and "tree," "snake" and "lake..." Ty practiced his rhyming skills as he found words that sounded the same with a "Rhyming Memory Game" in Language Arts. The Teddy Bears used cooperation and creativity to create a "sculpture garden," utilizing various types of blocks in Creative Expression. A Letter from the Kinder Works Teachers Last Day of Preschool/Kindergarten: Friday, June 15th The last day of Preschool & Kindergarten is Friday, June 15th. (Summer Camp begins Monday, June 18th; make sure you are registered!) Please watch your mailbox for your Preschool/Kindergarten Fall 2012 Final Enrollment Packet to arrive by early August. Observation skills are a vital part of the scientific process. Ryan, Jack, and Maddie got an up close look at the caterpillars as they slowly wove themselves into their chrysalides. They observed that the chrysalides had the same colors as the caterpillars, and that each caterpillar began creating its chrysalis at the bottom of its body, and worked upwards. This year our bodies grew taller and stronger, we developed many new skills and gained knowledge, but most importantly, our HEARTS GREW as WE LEARNED TO CARE FOR OURSELVES, FOR OTHERS, AND FOR OUR WORLD! When we focus on EQ, it is amazing what we can do! We have had an incredible year of generosity and giving through our EQ projects: the Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF collection, our over-flowing Thanksgiving Baskets, and who could forget the piles of presents around the Giving Tree, or your heart-warming gifts of books and pajamas, which were collected for and gratefully received by local children in need. To all of our Kinder Works Families: thank you for another fabulous year, thank you for sharing your children with us, and for helping us teach them to care for others. Together we have blessed the community, and each other, with kindness. On behalf of all those affected by your good deeds, THANK YOU! You have proven that being Kinder Works… because YOUR children are the future of our world! Warmest wishes, The Kinder Works Teaching Team YOUR children are the future of our world! Warmest wishes, The Kinder Works Teaching Team Budding Artist Ava found a piece of scrap paper with clocks on it in the "Free Draw Bin," added some detail, and turned it upside down; she called it "Melting Clocks," inspired by Salvador Dali’s "Persistence of Memory!" Recyclables Needed... Collection bins are located in our Creative Expression Classroom. As we prepare for summer camp, we are collecting various recyclables for our Arts & Crafts projects and activities, including: Plastic Gallon Jugs Plastic Bottle Caps (all sizes & colors) Gift Wrap Tubes/Paper Towel Tubes/Toilet Paper Tubes Old Puzzle Pieces (larger pieces) Egg Cartons & Coffee Cans Please make sure all donated items are empty, clean, and dry. THANK YOU! Fun in the Sun... Fun in the sun means it's time for sunscreen! As the weather gets hot, we still spend some time outside. Please dress your child appropriately for outside play, wearing sunscreen. Also, please check your child's cubby to be sure he/she has a change of clothes suitable for the season! Per our Parent Handbook, our teachers will reapply sunscreen to full day children, using Waterbabies PURE & SIMPLE, SPF 50 by Coppertone (a hypoallergenic, tear free formula); we welcome parents to send a bottle of this type of sunscreen to school with your child. If your child CANNOT use this particular brand of sunscreen due to medical reasons, please notify the Director in writing and supply alternative sunscreen. THANK YOU! At a 'writing center' in Language Arts, Georgie practiced her printing skills using word cards and special markers. Remember to Register for Summer Camp! Language and literacy skills flourished with our May theme, "SPRING IS ALL AROUND YOU" Fiona matched colorful petals with lowercase letters to the correct flowers, labeled with uppercase letters, as she completed a "Spring Time Letter Review" activity. Teddy practiced writing with our "trace one, try one" method; first he traced a word, then he tried to write the word on his own. Great job, Teddy! Our Rainbows/BBIIs listened attentively to Miss Curran as she read aloud a "Berenstain Bears" story about manners and being kind. After the story, the class discussed ways that they could be kind to one another! LeBron and Lily utilized their listening skills, as well as their pre-reading and tracking skills, as they shared a story at the 'listening center.' Our "SPRING IS ALL AROUND YOU" theme inspired our artistic expression and dramatic play in May Shruthi proudly displayed her Salvador Dali inspired "Surrealist Birds." The Munchkins created these strange, beautiful birds by first painting a watercolor-washed background to make a pink dream-like sky. When the paint was dry, they used marker to draw the birds with oddly elongated legs, and finished by coloring them in with crayons! Even Dali would be proud of Lexie's "Surrealist Birds" masterpiece! Nikhil used a q-tip and the three primary colors to paint all of the beautiful colors of the color wheel. The Teddy Bears created these wheels in the style of Pointillist Georges Seurat, blending colors to create new ones! Keira carefully added tissue paper "roses" to her beautiful spring-inspired mixed-media work entitled "Roses and Wishes." She used oil crayons to create the stems and grass, as well as the white puffs of the "wishes," and then squished up small bits of tissue to create 3-dimensional roses! Beautiful! Our May theme, "SPRING IS ALL AROUND YOU," led us to explore and discover exciting changes in our beautiful natural world The Bumble Bees went on a Springtime picnic, and were joined by some ants! Madison practiced matching numeral to number set by placing a specific number of ants on the picnic food with a corresponding numeral. Caroline and her Bumble Bee classmates each planted marigold seeds to give to someone special on Mother's Day. In doing so, they learned about what living things need in order to live. Their plants got nutrients from the soil, water from the sink, and lots of sunshine on our windowsills. Cru and Zachary created complex shapes, such as hexagons, using flower-shaped building toys. After the Bumble Bees learned about the life cycle of a butterfly, Zachary and Shalin used felt pieces to recreate the amazing cycle as they sequenced an egg on a leaf, a tiny caterpillar, a large caterpillar, a chrysalis, and finally, a beautiful butterfly. We sang, moved, and grooved through our "SPRING IS ALL AROUND YOU" theme in May Rahel has grown so tall and strong this year! She glided across the monkey bars on a beautiful spring day! Mrs. Tavares, Miss Malachowski, and the Teddy Bears completed a yoga session which celebrated the life of a young flower! The Spring-themed yoga game called “Seed, Sprout, Flower” required them to listen as three of their classmates rang a bell, each time signifying the flower growing from a seedling, to a sprout, to a full grown flower, and they changed poses to "grow" with each ring! Connor played the African drum in the musical activity, “Echo in the Springtime;” his Teddy Bear classmates had to guess what instrument was being played by just hearing its unique timbre, or sound. Eleanor spread her 'butterfly wings' during an outdoor creative movement activity in Gym and Music. During this activity, our Teddy Bears moved to the violin concerto music entitled "Spring,” from "The Four Seasons Symphony," written by famous Italian composer, Antonio Vivaldi.
