home.” (Israeli Hostage Rescuer at
Entebbe, Uganda, July 4, 1976)
This year is the 40th anniversary of the
Rescue of Jewish Hostages by
elements of the IDF from Entebbe,
Uganda. It is seen as a watershed event in the war
on International Terror and pretty much ended
airplane hijackings until 9/11.
But we, Israel and the Jewish world, see it a bit
differently. That momentous action sent the word to
the whole world that Israel would stop at nothing to
rescue Jews.
At our temple, we thank G-d, we do not have to
rescue hostages from 10,000 miles away. But on
several levels, we send the same message. We are
here to teach and reach your children. Our School,
of which I have been a part of for 30 years,
continues to mold lives, preparation for Bar/Bat
Mitzvah and Confirmation may be the most dramatic
events, but almost every Sunday, our teachers,
through their caring and commitment to Judaism,
make our children know that this is a safe place for
them to be. Don’t misunderstand we have high
standards for academics and of behavior. That’s my
job to set those standards. Just as the Israeli
commandos were well trained and disciplined and
were therefore successful, sometimes we have to
be “covert” (sneaky) to rescue the kids from what

President’s Message
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE - August 2016
Summer is usually a quiet time at Temple Beth Emet. Religious school is out,
families go on vacation, Shabbat services attendance wanes, and there are no
holiday celebrations. This summer has been different.
In June, our Sisterhood arranged a special gift to the Temple -- new carpeting for
Blum Hall and the sanctuary! They worked with Howard Sapper and his family
carpet company (plug!) to replace our tired blue carpeting with a beautiful light
brown floor covering that really brightens up our two most used and most visible rooms. We thank our
Sisterhood for this gift and for everything they do to support the Temple Beth Emet community. We all
need to support their efforts so they can continue their work.
We are thrilled to welcome Elaine Rosenfield to our Temple family as our new Director of our Preschool,
which we plan to open next month. Elaine brings to us her experience as a teacher and director at two
thriving local Jewish preschools, as well as an abundance of energy and enthusiasm. All we need now
are children ages 2 to 5. We know that there is demand in the Burbank community, but we are offering
Temple Beth Emet families priority. Please contact the Temple office and Elaine will get back to you to
set up a tour and provide additional information.
Hollywood Bowl tickets came in late this year, so we were not able to include concert information in the
July issue of the Chai Times. You should have received word by way of One Call. There are three
more concerts, including one on Friday, August 12 celebrating the 2016 Olympics in Rio featuring Sergio
Mendes and 50 years of Brazil ’66. Yes, FRIDAY evening! We will be holding a brief Shabbat services
at the Bowl at 7:00 PM, and the concert starts at 8:00 PM. We did something similar several years ago
at Dodger Stadium and it was a great success. Tickets are available in the Temple office.
We have two open houses planned. One is Wednesday night, August 17 from 7:00 PM to 9:00PM and
the other is Sunday morning, September 11 from 9:00AM to 1:00PM, coinciding with the opening day of
Religious School. Who do you know that might enjoy being part of the Temple Beth Emet family? Why
not bring them down to see our Temple and meet us?
Last year, our Men’s Club decided to take a break. They now want to restart the organization with a
fresh outlook, and they are looking for men and women (yes, the Men’s Club welcomes women just as
the Sisterhood welcomes men) interested in crafting a program of social, family, intellectual, and service
activities. Leave your name and contact information with the Office and the Men’s Club will set up a gettogether.
I would like to welcome the new members of our Board of Directors: Our new Treasurer Cathy Zitnick,
who is also Sisterhood President, our new Secretary, Eileen Martin, who was elected as a director, and
agreed to step into the vacant Secretary position, Dan Gura, and Martin Sultan. Welcome back to those
returning to the Board: David Goldstein, who steps up to Vice President, Shirley Abramson, Barbara
Bolter, Herb Murez, and Ken Watnick.
In Judaism, the number 18 represents chai, life. Thirty-six is “twice chai,” and as we know, when
something is repeated in Judaism, it is to be given additional importance. This month, my family
observes a “twice chai,” two lives joined together that result in something stronger than the two
individual lives, as my wife Diane and I celebrate our 36th wedding anniversary. I know I am indeed
blessed to have such a loving and wonderful life partner, and if I ever doubt it, there are plenty of people
here at Temple who will remind me! Happy anniversary, sweetheart!

has hijacked them from being the wonderful manifestation of creations that they truly are.
We understand their commitment and their parents’ commitment to our Temple and our
commitment can be no less strenuous.
When I think of commitment above and beyond what is expected of young adults, I think
of our Youth Group. We host an AZA chapter named Knesseth. It is open to young men
from 8h grade through High School. They meet here every Wednesday. And, while
truthfully, their commitment is first to B’nei Brith, they have made involvement in Temple
life a close second. Several times, they have helped us when they could, with as varied
activities such as the Passover Seder, the Purim Carnival, and when asked at the last
moment moved most of the pews out of the Sanctuary so we could make our Temple
shine. Truly, though, the true brilliance comes from them and all our young people’s
actions, listening, learning and playing in Judaism, not at Judaism.
I always worry when our young people graduate and go to college. College is a
bewildering place. If you are not strong in your beliefs, its temptations can be very
destructive. So, it is with great pleasure I tell you about a TBE rescue program. It is cochaired by Sisterhood President Cathy Zitnick and Sisterhood member Hannah Clein.
They contact our college “kids” and send them TBE Care Packages, on holidays and for
birthdays. All you need to do is call the Temple Office and give them the College address
of a child you know who could use the “rescue” of a present or food or just a card that
says we, like the Israelis, will go anywhere to “bring them home to us,” if only with some
candles, a dreidel or some food.”
At the other end of the childhood spectrum, our Early Childhood Center, is registering
children. Making TBE the home for even younger “potential Ph.D. Scholars” fills me with
great joy. But we need your help. Please, if you know of a potential family that is looking
for a Temple with a heart and with a commitment to life-long learning, love, care and
commitment to young people, bring them to us. Bring all who need a home to us. Forty
years ago, the Israelis found a way, don’t worry, so will we.

EDUCATION MATTERS - RSPA President, DAVID GOLDSTEIN
I hope that all of our Temple and Religious School families have been enjoying a restful and
fun-filled summer. It’s hard to believe that, in just a few short weeks, Fall will be here. We
have already been busily preparing for the new Religious School year, which is shaping up
to be one of our most exciting ever.
I would like extend a warm welcome to our Temple family to Elaine Rosenfield, who has
been hired as the Director of our new Temple Beth Emet Preschool. Elaine brings many years of
experience to our congregation, having previously served as Director of University Synagogue Early
Childhood Learning Center, Chatsworth Hills Academy, Shomrei Torah, as well as having worked at
many other area preschools. As many of you know, our Temple Preschool, which has been in the
planning stages for quite some time, is now set to open soon. We are currently accepting applications
for enrollment from Temple members and their friends and family before we open up enrollment
to the rest of the community in a few weeks, so if any of you have or know of families with
children ages 2-5, please contact the Temple office as soon as possible for further information.
The first day of Religious School for the 2016/17 school year will be Sunday, September
11th, beginning at 9:00 AM. Enrollment information will be emailed to all of our returning families, please
watch for the registration forms and other information which will be arriving soon. Please note that
parents are being asked to plan on spending at least part of the morning with us the first day, as we are
requiring that registration be done in person on the first day of instruction that year, I will be sending out
further information about this soon. Also, if you have a child who will be starting Religious School for the
first time or know of an interested area family please contact me so that I can make sure that enrollment
information gets to everyone who needs it

Fall.

A WORD FROM ELAINE
ROSENFIELD, PRESCHOOL DIRECTOR
Dear Temple Members,
I am very excited to begin a new chapter in, not only my life but, the life of Temple Beth Emet. As your
new Preschool Director, I'm thrilled to be able to share the warmth with new families that I have felt from
everyone I've met at the synagogue so far. Although the school will be small, we will grow and we will be
recognized as Burbank's new "place to be.” In a nurturing environment, rich in Jewish awareness,
Temple Beth Emet's littlest learners will gain independence, build on their foundation of self-esteem,
grow socially and emotionally and become the unique people they are meant to be. All this while having
LOTS of fun!
We have all heard and read that it "takes a village" to raise our children. It is an enormous job that
parents cannot do alone. For those of us with grown children, we've experienced the importance of
extended family and community. For those with young children, you will come to see that importance. I
feel confident that the teachers, our Rabbi, this community, and I will be that village.
My career in early childhood education began more than twenty years ago. I was a teacher at Temple
Ahavat Shalom and, after seven years in the classroom, I moved on to directing. I spent six years as
Preschool Director at Chatsworth School Academy, a secular school, that began with two-year-olds and
went up through Middle School. I must say, it was a little difficult breaking the habit of saying HaMotzi
before snack! I continued my career at University Synagogue in Brentwood. Over these years, I've had
the amazing opportunity to touch the lives of so many children and their families and I can honestly say I
love this journey!
The transformation of classrooms into a preschool setting is beginning. If you are a family with young
children, I would love to talk to you or, if you know of families with young children, please send them my

I look forward to meeting my new community and, as a parent of four grown children and six
grandchildren, reminding you often...

Sisterhood News from President Cathy Zitnick
Dear Members:
Our July 4th meeting was dark due to the Independence Day holiday and so many
people were out of town that weekend. So, our next meeting will be August 7th at 10:00 AM
in Blum Hall. I sent out an e-mail blast to find out if you would like to meet at the Temple,
or if you would like to meet at the Coral Café again. I had one response, not to meet at the Coral Café
again, so the Temple will be open for just us. I would like all of you to attend our next meeting. I am sure
that there are many of you out there that I haven’t met yet. I look forward to making your acquaintance.
On July 8th, there was an Installation of Officers of the Temple Board and of the Sisterhood at our Shabbat
Service at the Temple. (Unfortunately, the Men’s Club is still revitalizing and therefore could not
participate.) Of the Sisterhood Board, I was installed as the President of the Sisterhood, Shirley
Abramson as the Vice-President, Iris Abrams as the Treasurer, and Hannah Cline as the Recording
Secretary. The Board is will begin its new term and, even though I can’t say that we are richer in dollars, I
can say that we are richer in membership, with the help of Barbara Bolter, we have tripled our
membership from two years ago. My ultimate goal, though, is to get every lady who is a member of the
Temple, to also be a member of the Sisterhood. For even though our fundraising efforts eventually go to
the good of the Temple, our by-laws state that one does not need to be a member of the Temple to join
the Sisterhood.
Even though I have yet to schedule anything for the month of August, either a fundraiser or a community
service event, I want to remind you all that it is so important to support the activities of the Sisterhood. We
are an integral part of the Temple, and the more funds we raise the more we are able to do more nice
things at the Temple, like donate carpet, for our members.
The Sisterhood’s next fundraiser is to be our Estate Sale, which is scheduled for September 18th. We will
be occupying the entire parking lot for the event, with each member having an area to display her items
for sale. The ladies voted to provide a catering truck that day to provide lunches for the community and
us. Sunday school will be in session then, so we would like the parents to stop, browse, and buy while
the kids are in school.
The month of September we will be selling our annual Honey Boxes for Rosh Hashanah. The Sisterhood
has voted to keep the prices the same as last year; a box for $13, and a box mailed to whomever you
designate, for $20. We will again be mailing boxes to service men and women, so if you have a family
member or friend in the military, please get your order in to us by August 15th, as it takes a little longer for
them to receive it.
The June 19th was the beginning of Family Promise Week. Our usual Sunday night donation was
changed due to Father’s Day; however, we coordinated Thursday evening, June 23rd, to provide dinner
for the families. There was plenty of food that week and St. Jude’s was thrilled with our donations. I
would like to thank Iris Abrams for donating bread and desserts twice that week to Family Promise. I
believe our next rotation for Family Promise will be in October, but Jeanne Mintz will keep me apprised of
when they visit St. Jude’s next.

Do You Have a Son and/or Daughter In College?
Temple Beth Emet has started a program to connect with our students attending a College. We would
like to help them to continue their Jewish way of life and offer them additional support. This way, they will
always have an open line of communication with our Rabbi, should they have questions or need
direction; and we will remind them of their link to Israel and to keep connected to the Jewish Community.
After college, we hope to have them join our Temple, as an adult.

The Temple will send a care-package for each holiday, as a gift to the Student with a calendar of events

would like to encourage the Student to return to the Temple as often as they wish; as the Temple would
like to offer itself as a second home and place of Jewish learning. I look forward hearing from you!

will read and discuss:
Night by Elie Wiesel—We will read this book in Memorial Honor of his
passing.
Elie Wiesel is a young Jewish boy who is forced into small ghettos by the
Nazis during World War II. He and his family are later put on a train to an
unknown destination along with other Jews from their town. Elie could not
have imagined what he saw when the train stopped. The train stopped at
Auschwitz, a concentration camp. When the passengers exit the train the
men and women are separated and then the men are sorted into groups
based on their health and skills. Elie is separated from his mother and sister
immediately and never sees them again. He and his father are given a hint
on how to stick together by a stranger who has been at the camp for a long
time. Throughout the novel, Elie and his father must stick together in order
to survive. The duo manages to stay together even after switching
camps. Elie witnesses many atrocities during his time in the concentration
camps.

Who is Just5Club? J5 is a nonprofit organization helping those who are silently
struggling financially. In November of 2013, six young professionals came up with a
simple idea; a concept that beautifully ties the act of giving with uniting individuals
