University Day is the
annual campus wide spring
beautification event that
dates back to 1905!
Activities involve UO students, staff, faculty, and the
community. Hundreds gather to plant flowers and spread
bark dust to improve the campus landscape. We also

serving it up to delighted end-users.
“My main responsibility is to find
opportunities to convert raw data into
useful information to help managers do
their jobs,” he explained.
This year the event will take place on
Thursday, May 21.
Brandon joined the Campus Operations IT group on
March 23. Since then he has been meeting with managers and staff to better understand their roles in order to
determine what data to retrieve for them and how to
most functionally present it. He has been writing a lot of
queries in FAMIS to convert data for reporting in charts,
graphs, and interactive dashboards. Since he came on
board he has spent most of his time with maintenance
data, but he expects to work with operations and energy
data in the future.

began as part of Junior Weekend, when projects included
things such as laying the walk to Deady, followed by a
“feast” given by the University women. It has always
been a spirited event to prepare the University grounds
for commencement ceremonies, and even though it has
greatly evolved since 1905, our roots still lie in campus
spirit and community service.
ElizabethJacksonwill coordinate U-Day for
Campus Operations this year along with assistance from
LindaMiller. If you would like to participate, first
check with your supervisor and then contact Elizabeth or
Linda (6-2270 or 6-2316) to sign up for weeding,
planting, spreading bark, using the blowers, or even
window washing! Volunteers who give at least one hour
of their time will receive the annual University Day
t-shirt with this year’s slogan. Be sure to give your t-shirt
size when you sign up, and remember sizes are sometimes limited.

Brandon earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology/
Criminology from Southern Oregon University
graduating Summa Cum Laude in 2012. While attending
school, he was employed by Boise Cascade in Medford
where he has worked for the past 10 years. While there,
he was promoted to a planner/scheduler position that
required him to master “Maximo” a CMMS (computer
maintenance management system) similar to FAMIS.
While getting his Medford home ready to put on the
market, Brandon is living in Springfield. He and his
fiancé, Bobbi Jo and her 7-year-old daughter Jersey hope
to find a home to purchase in the Eugene-Springfield
area once the Medford home sells.
Brandon enjoys spending time with his family,
playing tennis and cooking (he’s “pretty good with pasta
dishes” and a “half way decent baker.” He also likes to
play with data—even in his spare time. That’s truly a
fascination!

Luncheon
The ASUO Street Faire is a bi-annual
event that takes place during Fall and
Spring terms.
The Faire is located on 13th Avenue
between Kincaid Street and
University Street. It is truly in the
heart of campus.
Associate Vice President George Hecht has once
again invited the Campus Operations Administrative
Professionals to a special luncheon in their honor to
thank them for the many things they do throughout the
year in support of the department.
Artisans, vendors, non-profit
organizations and student programs
from all over are invited to take part
in this event providing wonderful
shopping and lunch opportunities for
all who attend.
In recent past years the luncheon has taken place at
the Marché Museum Café followed by a tour of the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, the campus Glenwood
Restaurant, and the Carson Dining Hall among others.
Each year guests arrange with their supervisors to be
gone for a couple of hours around the lunch hour while
they are pampered with a wonderful meal and a chance
to visit with their peers.

This year the luncheon will take place on Monday,
May 4, at McMenamins East 19th Café beginning at
11:30 am and the guests would like to take this
opportunity to thank George in advance for his generous
hospitality!

Greetings! It’s almost May already, which means we have been busily typing away
at our spreadsheets in the back rooms trying to count all the beans for this year and get
our budgets ready for fiscal year 2016 (FY16).
For those of you who don’t know, our fiscal (budget) year runs
from July 1 to June 30, so beginning July 1 our next fiscal year,
FY2016, begins. (The fiscal year is named after the year in which it ends.)
We are planning on additional funds for FY2016 from our maintenance and custodial
areas due to the capital renovation of Straub Hall and the opening of the Student Recreation Center. We also have budget initiatives under review by the campus wide budget committee around additional
funding for our building control systems and beefing up our deferred maintenance funding. We should know about these
initiatives by the end of the month.
Overall, our current projected budget for fiscal year 2016 is
$39,792,581. This is broken down as $23,065,013 for the Central Power
Station, $14,917,121 for Facilities Services, and $1,810,447 for Administrative Services. You might notice that we are
not including the Capital Planning, Design and Construction group (CPDC). Over the course of the past 12 months this
group has been transitioning to their new organization combined with the former Campus Planning and Real Estate
group. CPDC will be financially separate from Campus Operations in FY16.
For the current year, we have a healthy
balance due to some favorable fuel prices
for the Central Power Station and a variety of savings measures in Facilities Services. Due to this (and some shrewd
planning by the folks in the mobile equipment shop) we have been able to purchase an additional load of equipment this
spring, including 6 new trucks and 3 new Kubotas! These should be coming in over the next few months, although there
is some lead time on the trucks!
We have been trying to take advantage of the low cost of fuel on the market to reduce
our costs for heating and cooling campus through our central plant. The central power
station is run by two boilers and a co-generation turbine which all burn natural gas. To help control costs for the campus,
Campus Operations pre-purchases set portions of our fuel (called hedging) at certain prices, for certain lengths of time,
based on what the production of steam, electricity and chilled water is at the plant. Currently we have hedged approximately 50% of our fuel costs at a reduced rate out through May of 2017, and we are exploring whether it makes sense to
lock in some of these prices for a longer period before prices begin to rise again. For comparison, our current natural gas
costs are approximately 50% less than we were paying in 2012.

the Exterior Team on March 26.
DustinHaydenjoined the Stores /
Purchasing Group on April 6 as a
Property Specialist 2. He is currently
training with staff but will eventually be buying and
controlling inventory for stock items on hand in the
store.
Prior to joining Campus Operations,
Thomas worked in landscape maintenance
at Shonnards’ Nursery in Corvallis for
five years. He grew up in Philomath and currently lives
in Eugene. In his spare time, Thomas enjoys disc golfing, hiking and camping.
Dustin comes to us from Eugene Fastener and Supply
where he has been a buyer for the past 3 years. He is a
2011 graduate from the University of Oregon earning a
Bachelor of Arts degree in English and History.

He was raised in Springfield where he now lives with
his wife Arvilla. They share their home with two dogs,
Moses and Sansa, and three cats, Milo, Lexi, and Callie.

14. Sandi’s main responsibilities include
creating and completing work orders,
creating purchase requisitions and issue
requests, helping to maintain FAMIS data
for her department and managing Outlook tasks for the
group. She holds an undergraduate degree from Pacific
Lutheran University in Tacoma and a Masters Degree in
English from the University of Oregon.

her office position for Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in
Eugene where she has worked for the past five years.

ago. Both Dylan Salinas and Kiles White started the
program on April 6.
Sandi grew up in Eugene and now shares her home
with husband Greg and their three children: Kate, a 17year old senior at Sheldon High School, Aaron, a 15-year
old freshman, and 13-year-old 8th grader John, who
attends Cal Young Middle School. The family has 2
dogs, Golden Retriever “Ginger” and Labradoodle
“Cooper.”
“This is a unique opportunity for new employees to
train, learn, and get a lot of knowledge in a hurry,”
explained Randy. “It’s a 5-step program that will
culminate in Dylan and Kiles becoming Co-Generation
Engineers after they successfully complete the 4-year
program. They are starting at the ‘Trades Maintenance
Worker 1’ level with the goal of working their way
through TMW2, Stationary Boiler Operator, and
Stationary Engineer positions on the path to the toplevel co-engineer position.”
In her spare time Sandi enjoys hiking and traveling
with her family, reading, gardening, and wine tasting.
Randy shared that Dylan is a member of the Air
National Guard and is heading to Portland this weekend
for his monthly service. Kiles enjoys four wheeling on
the dunes.
