Bon Air Country Club Bon Air Country Club Phone: 717-235-2091 Email: [email protected] February, 2015 Message from the President My term is over as a board member and I am happy to say I enjoyed all 3 years. I had the opportunity to serve with some great people who had one thing in mind...making our club attractive, fun and growing while remembering our history. There have been challenges; failing equipment, winter storm damage, leaking pool and declining membership. The most important of those is the declining membership. We all need to work on bringing our membership back to a level where improvements aren’t such a financial challenge. For years our membership committee has been a one person committee (mostly run by Fred Brehm the past 6 years) with a lot of criticisms but no help. Give the committee a little of your time and help the club get back to a healthy membership level. I want to thank Jeff Glatfelter for doing a commendable job of managing our club. He has been a breath of fresh air. Also, I want to thank Butch and his staff for providing us with one of the best golf courses in York county and northern Maryland. I think we have one of the best assistant pros in the state-thanks Travis! Finally, I want to congratulate our newest board members Andre Del Pino, Jack Rowe and Dan Gartrell. You are joining a fine Board. Signing out for the last time, Mike BON AIR COUNTRY CLUB Page 2 From the Pro GM/Pro — Jeff Glatfelter As a PGA Golf Professional, we are often looked to as the experts in many areas such as rules, equipment, club fitting, golf instruction and much more. After 40+ years playing golf and 27 years as a golf professional you might think I would know it all. This is obviously not true as the game and the industry is always changing and adapting to new technology. In an effort to stay current on today’s changing game, my January was primarily focused on developing skills and understanding knew technology in an effort to provide the Bon Air members the best service possible. At the beginning of January I attended Mizuno Club Fitting School to hone my club fitting skills. As a Certified Mizuno Club Fitter, I will better be able to assist you in choosing the equipment that will help you get the most out of your game. In Mid-January the PGA of America hosted its semi-annual Teaching and Coaching Summit where the game’s greatest teachers share their knowledge over two 10-hour days. Names you might recognize included Butch Harmon, David Ledbetter, Jim McLean, Sean Foley Greg Norman, Nancy Lopez and many more. One of my highlights of the 2 days was sitting with Hall of Fame Teacher Jim McLean during the morning session and sharing thoughts on teaching. I was impressed that even he took 3 or 4 pages of notes. My month ended with 3 days at the PGA Demo Day and Merchandise Show where I was able to touch , feel, hit and ask questions about all of the new 2015 equipment. Additionally, I attended seminars on ball fitting, metal wood fitting and fitness for golf. One of my most fortunate events of the month was being in the right place at the right time for a 45 minute putting clinic given by PGA Champion and teacher to the stars, Dave Stockton. Overall it was a great educational experience and I hope I am able to convey some of what I learned to each of you during the upcoming season to help you better enjoy the game! From the Grounds Department As spring rapidly approaches I would like to make the membership aware of a very big change coming this upcoming golfing season. The Men’s Golf Committee has purchased a new and exciting software program designed to help both golfer and maintenance staff alike. Butch Howard — Golf Course Superintendent “The Strackaline system is patented technology that tracks the exact slopes and breaks of a golf course and putting greens.” The greens were laser scanned and that information can now be used to give you an exact line on which to putt. There is an IPhone app (Android is in the works) that allows you to pull up the green you’re playing, place your ball on the green and let the software read the green for you. You cannot use this during a scoring round; it is merely a teaching tool. The package also includes yardage books (available for purchase at the Pro Shop), that will show the contours of the greens and can be used during regulation play. Using this system in conjunction with Aimpoint training can lead to improved putting performance. Please contact Jeff or Travis for more information regarding the Strackaline system. The most important change (in my opinion) will be in pin selection. In past years it was up to the staff to designate where the pins were to be placed on a green for that particular day. Strackaline automatically picks pin locations. Theoretically it is designed to rotate wear evenly across the green for the season. Jeff or Travis can pre select pin locations for upcoming tournaments and Strackaline will rotate around those locations insuring a clean location. Daily pin sheets will be located in the Pro Shop for members. Detailed information on Strackaline can be found in both the Men’s and Women’s 19th hole locations. Hope to see you out there soon! BON AIR COUNTRY CLUB Page 3 From the Men’s Golf Committee - Chris Bilbie, Committee Chairman After a successful 2014 tournament season, the MGC has decided on only a few minor changes for the 2015 season. In hopes of getting an early start to the season the MGC will be hosting a St. Patty’s Day Scramble on March 14th. This will be similar to the Cross Country Scramble with a slightly different twist. This will be a 4 player scramble in which teams will play the course backward. This will not be an MGC Points Tournament. The only additional change to the schedule will be a flip flop on the calendar in which the 1-2-3 Tournament will move to Saturday, September 12th, and the Member/Member Tournament will be played on August 29th & 30th. A few other tweaks to tournament formats will also be incorporated into the 2015 schedule. The President’s Cup will be played from two sets of tees with Senior Players who meet a combined Age and Handicap Quota competing from the Green Tees and all other players competing from the White. The last change decided upon for the upcoming season is the elimination of the Ringer Tournament as a Points Tournament. The Ringer Tournament will still be played but Points towards Jr/Sr Cup will not be awarded for this event. Lastly, I would like to encourage all of you to take advantage of the MGC Coupon Sale which will start in March. These Coupons provide an opportunity to buy discounted rounds of golf for your guests. More importantly the revenue produced allows the MGC to fund projects around the club such as tree removal, new tables and chairs in the ballroom, the Strackaline System (see message from superintendent) and much more. In 2015 the MGC has already committed to replacing the badly worn yardage markers in the fairways and replacing the rakes in the bunkers with new wider rakes that will improve the playability of the bunkers. I hope you will consider purchasing your maximum allocation of tickets and I also hope you have a great 2015 golf season! * New Event * St. Patty’s Day Backward Scramble Saturday, March 14 10:00 AM Shotgun Sign-up individually and the pro shop will form 4 player teams to play the course backward. This event is open to all women of Bon Air. This year we had a lovely brunch, played cards followed by a gift exchange. A huge thank you to Lindy Sweeney, Diane Seitz and Madeline Dipangrazio, Pat Lowder and Shirley Stake for all their help with food and decorations. Pat and Shirley made beautiful boxwood trees which served as table decorations and were then given out as door prizes. Pat Lowder also arranged with Southern Community Services to help provide Christmas gifts for three families. Thank you to all the Bon Air Ladies for participating in this great event for our community. At our Fall Meeting, held in October, our 2015 officers were nominated and elected. Mary Lu Mixon will continue on as Chairlady, Lindy Sweeney will continue as Vice Chair, Diane Seitz will again be our Treasurer, Pam Warner will be our new Secretary and Carol Seitz will be our Team Captain. Any women of Bon Air that might be interested in joining the Wednesday group is encouraged to attend this meeting. We play every Wednesday at 9AM, with different formats each week. The Women's Golf Committee ended their 2014 season with the Annual Cross Country Event. It was a cold but sunny day, and we all enjoyed the "new" course designed by Travis and Jeff, and enjoyed the homemade soups and desserts provided by all the participants. All have won election to three year terms on the board beginning in February. Thank you to each of these gentlemen for their commitment to the club. Thank you also to George Townsend and Rick Fava for their willingness to serve our club. Ladies 18 Holers Spring Meeting Wed. March 25th at 9:30 AM We need your help! The House Committee has been working this winter to give the ballroom a fresh look and is looking for two buffets. One is to replace where the coffee pot sits near the kitchen and the other is to go where the round table typically sits by the front doors. We are hoping someone might have a piece of furniture sitting around that they would like to donate. Let us know if you can help. Take a look at Bon Air’s new website! www.bonaircc.com The recently formed Technology Committee (in particular Chris David and Billy Meredith) has put together a new website to better convey the Bon Air message. With the help of committee chairmen and staff, Chris and Billy have completely updated our website image. The new site will feature a public page and a “Member’s Only” page. The public page is now functional and is a great place to direct friends or family who may want to find out more about membership at Bon Air. The “Members Only” page will be launched in a few weeks and will be full of information to help each member get the most out of the club. Once the “Members Only” page is launched, each member will be provided a login password to access the site. Additionally, we would like to thank Dave Gibson for his many years of managing the old site and for his help transitioning to the new site. Is Club Fitting you? Years ago most golf clubs were sold off the rack and they basically all had the same “specs” and all manufacturers had the same standards. Golfers of all sizes and swing techniques had to adapt their games to the clubs being sold. Unlike football, where you can deflate the ball to fit your hand, golfers were stuck with ill fitting equipment. Move forward twenty-five years and millions of dollars of research, today’s golfer has unlimited choices of equipment built to fit their games. Todays club fitters have the ability to match a players size, swing speed, grip size, swing technique, launch angle and a whole lot more to equipment custom built to help them play better golf. With all of the technology and gismos in the golf industry, a person could be confused with what, where and how to be fit for a set of clubs. Here at Bon Air you have the opportunity to be fit outside where both you and your pro can observe your ball flight rather than hitting into a projection screen. Both Jeff Glatfelter and Travis Contres are certified Mizuno Club Fitters and they are anxious to help you identify the right equipment for you. The Bon Air Pros will utilize the latest technology to assure you are getting equipment that matches your game. In addition to utilizing the Mizuno Club Fitting Cart and the Mizuno Shaft Optimizer, Jeff and Travis will also be incorporating the new ES14 Launch Monitor to measure such things as swing speed, ball speed, launch angle, spin rate, smash factor and distance. A properly fit club can help you increase distance, improve consistency, hit straighter shots and ultimately lower your scores. Players of all abilities will benefit from a club fitting evaluation. Contact the Pro Shop today to schedule your club fitting session.
