Executive Director’s Message
2005 at Fort Calgary has already been a busy year and the year has
just begun! Our plans to stay open year-round have been a success
and we now see tourists throughout the winter from around the world.
It is always interesting to me to realize that winter in itself is an
attraction!

Annual General Meeting
Fort Calgary’s summer season will again be a busy one. In celebration
of Alberta’s centennial we will open a summer exhibit focused on
“How We Played: 1905 to 2005”. Canada Day has been expanded
this year to include the Hudson’s Bay Company Foundation – Run
for Canada. I know that this will be an exciting family event that will
continue at Fort Calgary for years to come.
The unveiling of the Colonel Macleod statue will mark Alberta’s 100th
birthday on September 1, 2005. Fort Calgary is very proud to receive
this gift from the RCMP Veterans Association – Calgary Division
and we know that it will evolve as a major focal point in the city.
Several years ago, Fort Calgary began the slow process of reclaiming
the natural environment in the park. In conjunction with the Suncor
community garden, native shrubs, prairie grasses and wildflowers were
planted with the hope of attracting wildlife. The project has been
very successful .
Fort Calgary continues to discover Calgary’s past, present and future
and to recreate the role of Fort Calgary as the centre of the community.
We hope to see you this summer.

News from Volunteer Resources
Fort Calgary Volunteers Help to Make Winterfest a Success
At Fort Calgary's Winterfest Carnival, held on Saturday, February 12, approximately 60 volunteers provided support to make
the event a success. We would like to thank all the volunteers who contributed their time including those from the Youth Volunteer
Corps. Volunteers worked as hosts, greeters, game attendants, craft assistants, balloon makers, popcorn makers, mascots and
orientation room supervisors.

Fundraising Casino Scheduled for July

Fort Calgary's next fundraising casino takes place on Sunday, July 24
and Monday, July 25 at Casino Calgary, 1420 Meridian Road N.E.
The event provides a major source of revenue for Fort Calgary, with
the last casino bringing in approximately $63,000.00. We are fortunate to have Ray Wilson, one of our RCMP Veterans, continue on as
General Manager for the event. If you are
interested in volunteering at the casino we
are looking for people to work as cashiers,
chip runners, bankers and count room personnel. To register as a volunteer, please

Calgary Stampede 2005 - Fort Calgary’s entry
For several years Fort Calgary has participated in the Stampede Parade. This year we are
looking for volunteers to assist us with the construction of the float, participation in the parade
and dismantling our entry immediately following the event.

Help Us Find More for "How We Played: 1905 to 2005"
The idea of exhibiting family toys and games in Fort Calgary's Centennial Exhibition has piqued the interest of many Calgarians.
People have offered to loan us things such as Meccano sets from several of our chosen eras, paper dolls and Tonka trucks from
the 1950s, and games like Hungry, Hungry Hippo and Uno from the late 1970s. We have been offered Barbie dolls from the
1980s and a collector's edition doll from 2005. Matchbox vehicles and animals from the 1930s as well as sheet music from the
1905 time period will fit in the exhibition very nicely.
People who have played or still do play with Yo-yos and table hockey games have contacted Fort Calgary. We are planning to
have demonstrations of these games during the summer months.
We are still looking for die cast cars, penny arcade games and inline skates from
1905, and Fisher Price and LEGO toys from the 1930s. We are interested in getting
Mr. Potato Head, a Slinky and a Gilbert Chemistry set from around 1955, as well as
a television set from that time period. Television memorabilia that reflects popular
shows from the 1950s and 1980s would be great to have. Please check the full list on

The field trip was fun and I loved when we got to wear the hats at the train
station. Emily
I saved the best thing for last, it was when my group got to march and try on the
uniforms. When I was marching I got all confused. Then when I tried on the
uniform it was too big and the buttons were hard to do up at the bottom. Jessica
I also liked trying on the clothing and the helmets, but the helmet went over my

I really liked that Fort Calgary has everything exactly the same way that it used to

The most interesting thing at Fort Calgary was the jail. I really liked how you can
write your name on the wall. In the jail there were two rooms. One had a bed in

The stores were impressive. They make you think you were in the olden days.

I liked when I got to build a log-house out of real logs and we got to play dressup. Aryana

I liked dressing up. That was my favourite centre. I had a red bonnet with flowers on it and the dress was gray-brown and

I had a good experience, like when we made Fort Calgary again but then it was torn down by people in the railroad. Tanner

Food & Beverage
We continue to try and offer new and tasty ways to tempt your palate. The Deane House is now
offering a three course menu for only $15.00 per person. Each month features a different selection
of appetizers, entrees and desserts. We are hoping for a May opening of the patio. With the new
look of the house and the great view of the rivers what better way to enjoy lunch. Our Murder
Mystery Dinner theatre continues to entertain the mind and the tastes every 2nd and 4th Friday of
each month. If you are looking a fun night out give us a call.
Mothers Day is May 8th. We will be holding our popular brunch, which features either, a three
course menu at The Deane House or a full buffet at the 1888 Barracks. Reservations are required
and we recommend that you call early to avoid disappointment. For reservations call 269-7747.
We still have a few dates available for weddings during
the upcoming summer months. As well our meeting and
banquet rooms are available seven days a week. For

Dominion Day at Fort Calgary - July 1, 2005

Join us on July 1 between 9 AM and 4 PM for another
spectacular event. We’ll start the day with our annual Board of
Directors’ pancake breakfast. At 11 AM and 2 PM the
Superdogs demo team will show you how to train your dog to
become the next Superdog. This year we’ll have 2 stages with
live entertainment: the International stage with music and dance provided by the Folk Art Council
and the Hbc Kids Stage with magicians, sing-a-longs and theatre. Our Canada Day ceremony
will be at noon. Other activities include games, crafts, face painting, and much more. We will also
have the opening of our Centennial exhibition “How We Played: 1905 to 2005”. For more

This year we’re working together with the Hudson’s Bay Company Foundation, who will be
organizing the “Run for Canada”. Last year, Hbc launched the Run for Canada in the nation’s
capital. It helped to raise $100,000 for the Hbc Foundation and in turn, improve the lives of
Canadians and the future of Canada. Helping your community is a good reason to run. And now
you and your family can join in the Hbc Run for Canada this July 1st, 2005 in Calgary. The same
run will be held in six other communities across the nation, including Victoria, Winnipeg, Algonquin
Park, Toronto, Ottawa or Halifax.
There are lots of other reasons to participate, from challenging
yourself in a 10K Run or enjoying a 3K Family Walk. There’s
even a 1K Kids Run, so even the little ones can get involved.
