Celebrating its 18th edition, the Fantasia
International Film Festival returns to Concordia’s
Hall theatre from July 17 to August 5. Since its
first edition in 1996, the festival’s ever-growing
popularity has attracted the attention of the
international film industry alongside a legion of
attendees from across the world. Over 125,000
festival-goers attended Fantasia in 2013, and the
festival has attracted over 1.4 million spectators
over its duration, establishing Fantasia as an
event with long-term benefits for films both big
and small. Our website attracted 775, 000 page
views by more than 90,000 unique visitors in the
summer of 2013.

Every facet of the filmmaking chain is increasingly
represented with in-person delegates at the
festival — directors, actors, producers, studio
representatives, distributors and festival

While already widely considered to be one of the
largest and most influential fantastic film festivals
in the world, Fantasia looks forward to expanding
on its achievements with more visiting filmmakers,
industry attendees, global media impact, original
critical writing through a monthly web magazine,
and the introduction of a film market that will enable
independent media artists to exchange ideas and to
connect with patrons and audiences alike.

Audience demographics
From July 18 to August 6, 2013, the Fantasia International Film Festival held its 17th edition at the
Imperial Cinema, Concordia University, Cinémathèque Québécoise, Place des Arts, Société des Arts
Technologiques (SAT) as well as in the Quartier des Spectacles (entertainment district). The festival
notably generated the following results:

∞∞ More than 125,000 film goers in 2013
(vs 109,000 in 2012);
Gender
∞∞ 131 feature films from 25 countries, 100 of
them presented as a premiere on our market;
∞∞ 220 short films from 20 countries presented
notably throughout some 15 thematic short programs;
∞∞ 139 paying screenings, including 84 sold out
screenings (60%);
∞∞ 16% of our audience are tourists or excursionists;
∞∞ Six Québec feature films, including the world
premieres of Robert Morin’s LES 4 SOLDATS,

at Fantasia in 2013 find themselves in the running

The Fantasia Industry Rendez-Vous and its
Frontières International Co-Production Market
The second edition of the Fantasia Industry
Rendez-Vous took place from July 25 to 28,
2013. The Frontières International Co-Production
Market once again presented 24 international
co-production projects, presented by directors and
producers hailing from Quebec, Canada, the USA,
Mexico, Ireland, the UK, France, Spain, Germany,
Poland and New-Zealand.
Frontières is the first co-production market to bring
together North America and Europe in a context
specifically geared towards genre film. Highlighting
the success of its model, it received an important
grant from the MEDIA Mundus program to expand
into a circuit. In April 2014, Frontières will have
its third edition in Brussels during the Brussels
International Fantastic Film Festival, and will return
to Fantasia for its fourth edition in July 2014.
The Rendez-Vous included Frontières pitch
sessions, meeting sessions, a series of conferences
and networking cocktails. It also included the
Fantasia Film Market, to support the sales efforts
of the films included in the festival’s programming.
An on-site and online screening library
complemented the festival’s regular schedule of
theatrical screenings. The free services of three
consultants specializing in career and project
development were also offered to attending
filmmakers. With 280 accreditations, 90 producers,
70 filmmakers, 30 distributors, 10 sales agents and
35 festival programmers attended the market, as
well as three of the main American talent agencies.
85 participants came from here in Québec, 80
from the U.S., 60 from the rest of Canada, 20 from
France, 10 from the UK, 12 from the rest of Europe,
7 from Asia, two from New Zealand, two from
Israel and 2 from Mexico.
Frontières will have its Brussels edition from April
10 to 12, 2014, and return to Fantasia with the
Industry Rendez-Vous from July 24 to 28, 2014.
