Drury University is about people, not things. But when “things” improve quality of life for members of the Drury community, the people who helped make it happen deserve a “thank you.” In the pages to follow you will see and read of the surge of infrastructure improvements for our students since last year. This historic and timely campus upgrade has brought a renewed sense of pride and energy on campus and clearly contributed to record enrollment. The magnificent O’Reilly Family Event Center, revitalized and restored historic Wallace Hall, the Kellogg Green, new bike and walking trails, and even the view of campus from Chestnut Expressway where once stood the ruins of Tindle Mills have all opened up and showcased the core 40 acres. Our progress in challenging times was made possible by generous and caring benefactors and aggressive professionals who delivered on budget and on time. THANK YOU O’Reilly family for providing the lead Family Center gift, CoxHealth for stepping up immediately to support the dream, Mabee Foundation for the large matching grant, Pitt family for allowing us to go for the gold (LEED Gold), Curry family for buttressing our fundraising drive, Coca-Cola Bottlers of the Ozarks for your ongoing support, Sunderland and Kemper Foundations, Drury Trustee families like the Stouts, Beuerleins, Nevilles, and Reeds, friends in the community like the Plaster, Ferguson, and Davis families, and Dr. Matthews for your steady and unwavering leadership. The O’Reilly Family Event Center bears all of your names in honor of your major contributions. Thank you all for making this incredible new entertainment venue available to our students, the community and the entire region. Thank you Tom and Camille Kellogg for creating an oasis for student recreation and reflection in the footprint of old, unutilized buildings, which now rest in peace as the Kellogg Green. Thank you Baron Design and Associates and Killian Construction for recreating Wallace Hall on the inside while preserving its iconic facade over the 90 days of summer. Thank you H-Group, and, again, Killian Construction for designing and delivering the new O’Reilly Center on time and close to budget. Thank you Point Royale Development for bringing down the Tindle Towers and opening campus to a view from downtown. Thank you Dr. Wendy Anderson for the beautiful bike and hiking path that winds through campus from north to south, and for the bicycles that now traverse it. Thank you Pete Radecki and staff for managing it all to completion. And thank you students, faculty, and staff for putting up with transitional mess! Finally thanks to the many of you unnamed above who contributed large or small, in dollars or in kind, for this has indeed been a community WIN! I told you this is a THANK YOU note! Go out and enjoy a new and renewed Drury! T H E P R E S I D E N T The Drury family continues to grow. Freshman Miranda Middleton, pictured with her parents Neil and Cindy Miles, enjoys her first day in Wallace Hall. Miranda is an architecture major from Advance, Mo., who says her favorite things about Drury so far are the small class sizes and the friends she has made. 4 Todd Parnell ’69 Drury University President 3 A F R O M s the steady drumbeat of media attention suggests, these are trying times for many institutions of higher education. In the wake of the Spellings Commission report and understandable concerns about access to and the cost of higher education in the United States, much has been written in recent years about the need to insure “accountability” for universities’ relative success at educating their students and for their use of resources. While there are periodic calls for intrusive oversight by state and federal entities, a far preferable and more likely outcome is that the well established system of regional accreditation will respond in ways that provide greater transparency, accountability and assurance of learning quality for all stakeholders. In the landscape of American higher education, external accreditation provides an important, albeit incomplete, measure of institutional and academic excellence. Sustaining and enhancing Drury’s commitment to providing the region’s finest education is not the responsibility of external accreditors. That responsibility rests appropriately with our faculty, staff and administration, and our students are the most important measure of our success. However, the reflective process of preparing for accreditation review through self-study promotes continual improvement by assuring regular comprehensive review of curricula, staffing, learning outcomes, and resources. The increased demands on faculty for increased scholarship and more creative teaching, assessment of learning outcomes, and program accountability are, by most measures, valuable products of external accreditation. This fall, Drury is undergoing review by the Higher Learning Commission, seeking continued accreditation for the next ten years. This process includes the preparation of a comprehensive self-study which is submitted, along with substantial financial and other data, to the Commission. The final step in the review process is a site visit by a team of consultant evaluators from the Higher Learning Commission. Our preparations began more than two years ago when a steering committee organized to develop a plan for the self-study. The resulting process involved more than 100 members of the Drury community, delivering on the promise implied in its title, I am Drury. I would invite you to review the self-study online. It is available at www.drury.edu/HLC2010. When the Higher Learning Commission’s site visit team visits the Ozarks from November 8-10, 2010, they will experience a campus community that has emerged from the challenges of the past decade stronger, more focused on our key priorities, and positioned for a very bright future. We have robust enrollments in both our traditional undergraduate programs and in the College of Graduate and Continuing Studies. Our colleagues are investing their time and expertise in important projects as wide-ranging as global learning experiences, general education revision, and building a more diverse, sustainable and inclusive campus community, just to name a few. The new O’Reilly Family Event Center and Kellogg Green Space, renovated Wallace Hall and new walking and cycling paths promise to enhance our already lovely “40 acres.” To be sure, we have our challenges, as does all of higher education. However, the comprehensive and candid process of institutional self-study that has taken place over the past 24 months indicates clearly that Drury’s commitments to our students, to each other and to the communities we serve should make us proud of what we’ve accomplished and who we are. It’s good to be Drury. T H E A C A D E M I C V I C E P R E S I D E N T Drury welcomed freshmen and families to campus for Move-In Day. E V E N T C E N T E R “I think the new O’Reilly Family Event Center will be a great facility not only for Drury, but for the community. The structure of the building allows it to be used in many different ways, not just as a sports arena. Being the first women’s basketball team to play in the arena will be extremely exciting. We get the chance to make O’Reilly as special of a place to us and future players that Weiser is to former players.” Ja’Nell Jones Senior Point Guard 8 A Place for Everyone Seven suites line the west side of the John P. The Panther Pride Official Team Store and the Drury Sports Hall of Fame flank the stunning entrance lobby. Hall of Famers will be recognized on mounted plaques and a touch screen monitor where viewers can flip through photos and statistics on former Drury athletic greats. Red, gray, and black are the predominant colors featured in the official team store where avid fans can purchase Drury clothing and lots of logo items to promote team and school spirit. The biggest focal point on the east wall is the Bill Harding/Edsel Matthews Wall of Champions. Housed in bays between brick columns is a historical pictorial trip through the earliest years of Drury athletics through the present. Each of Drury’s sports will be recognized along with special athletes and coaches who made significant contributions to the success of the athletic program. Busts depicting Weiser, Harding, and Matthews – all coaches with a long and successful history at Drury – are a prime feature of each display section. Another gathering spot created with families and kids in mind is the Panther Deck, a space on the southeast corner of the building named by Empire Bank in honor of Mike and Carol Williamson. With access to an outdoor patio, the Panther Deck holds up to 40 people who wish to have a family social event at a basketball game or before a concert. Birthday parties for kids will feature special Panther cupcakes. Corporate groups may order food and beverages from the catering service and mingle while watching the game from the best view of the arena. Sport teams can reserve the space as well, providing great viewing and fun. When concerts play the 3,100 seat venue, the goals and score tables get rolled off the court and gray carpet squares cover the entire arena floor. Bleachers under the Thomas R. Stout Student Section slide back and allow space for the stage to be built. Perhaps the most exciting feature of all is the sound. Gray acoustic panels drape between rafters which help the specially designed building produce an incredible “surroundsound” experience for everyone. Backstage Pass O’Reilly Family Event Center is just as impressive behind the scenes. On the lower level, five locker rooms provide space 7 Drury’s signature community spirit is on display high above the William A. Pitt court. In addition, two dressing/shower spaces are available for officials. All of these areas get turned into celebrity “green rooms” for concerts and events. Plenty of storage space for equipment, a security office, and a laundry room are located off of the marshaling area and three-bay delivery dock. A special donor helped make possible an upgrade for the lockers which are unique with burl walnut panels and specially designed drawers and storage space. Fourteen offices house the administration of the Drury University athletic department, O’Reilly Family Event Center staff, volleyball and basketball coaches, and sports information office. Graduate assistants and student workers have ample space to assist the athletic program. Recruits and other guests have a nice, comfortable waiting area prior to meetings with coaches and staff. Off of the Sharon D. Barber lobby, the CoxHealth Sports Medicine training room provides seven times the space of the existing training area in Hutchens HPER. Six taping stations, ten treatment tables, rehab and exercise equipment, three whirlpools, and a doctor’s treatment room make this area an invaluable resource for the Drury’s 290 student-athletes. More Than a Building The most awe-inspiring feature of O’Reilly Family Event Center isn’t the square footage or the scoreboard, the banquet hall or the bucket seats. It’s the people who have contributed, in big ways and small, to every moment leading to the grand opening. It’s the people who will fill the seats and play on the floor, and the legacy of a new chapter in Drury’s history just beginning. There are so many reasons to say WOW! BY MY R A M I L L E R O’R E I L LY FA M I LY E V E N T C E N T E R D I R E C TO R 12 11 WA L L A C E A renovated Wallace Hall comes alive when new students begin moving in. BY H O L LY B I N D E R H O U S I N G CO O R D I N ATO R H A L L H R E N O VA T I O N “The Wallace Hall renovation is absolutely amazing! While the historical character and charm of the building remains, the students that live there now enjoy modern amenities like multiple electrical outlets, stand-up showers, and individual AC/Heating units in each room. As you walk through the building, you can still notice a hint of “new construction” smell. New floors, walls, ceilings, light fixtures, and bathrooms are reminiscent of a fancy hotel– complete with solid-surface countertops and stainless steel towel bars. The common areas also received a makeover. The Lobby is roomy and comfortable with new couches, chairs, and a flat screen TV. Where the weaving lab used to reside, there is now a coffeehouse style lounge with comfy chairs and a countertop and sink. There’s even a new laundry room in the basement! Obviously the residents of Wallace are thrilled with the upgrades. Students expect to receive nice accommodations for the price they pay at Drury, and Wallace lives up to those expectations!” Matt Battaglia Residence Life Coordinator & Director of Second Year Experience ow has Wallace Residence Hall changed? “Wallace has always valued community,” says Garret Shelenhamer (’12), a third year resident of Wallace. “The building itself is just a building. It is the people inside it that make the place feel like home. However, we are so excited that our home-awayfrom-home is now more accommodating, and, let’s be honest, a whole lot better looking.” As the Housing Coordinator, I used to dread the first week of school. How many parent complaints would I get about the interior of Wallace Hall? It became a game to count the number of parent phone calls that started with, “You know, I lived in Wallace in the ’70s and it looks exactly the same. ” I knew the day couldn’t get worse when I discovered that Johnny Doe’s Grandma Josephine also lived in Wallace when she attended Drury College back in the ’50s, and by golly, the building hasn’t changed since! The lightning-quick Wallace renovation that occurred in the summer of 2010 is just what our residents deserved. Now they can enjoy Grandma Josephine’s digs with modern conveniences. Thanks to Baron Design & Associates and Killian Construction, Wallace’s exterior has retained its historic 20th century charm, but the inside has been rebuilt and designed with the 21st century in mind. Major structural improvements include the installation of an elevator and connecting ramps between the north and south wings. Not only will these changes improve accessibility, it will increase the sense of community between the wings. Another community booster is the new lounge space situated in the old weaving lab which features tables for studying and a kitchen counter. The building was replumbed, and the outdated radiant heating system and window air conditioners were replaced with combination heating and cooling units, which can be individually controlled from room to room. The new electrical system doubles the number of electrical outlets in the room. And how about that extra-touchy fire alarm system that would sound anytime a resident forgot to crack the bathroom window during a shower? It’s been ripped out and rewired. A ventilation system in the A new Wallace Hall room with freshly painted orange walls. Other colors include mustard and avacado green. bathroom also helps reduce the number of false fire alarms for which Wallace is known. Now students stay up having fun and studying in the building, rather than outside waiting for the “all clear!” signal. In addition to infrastructure changes, some furnishings and appliances have been replaced or upgraded. Before the renovation, limited bathroom space and storage were identified as primary concerns. To address this problem, sinks were relocated to the bedrooms and encased in a chic storage cabinet with faux-stone countertop. A mirror and light fixture are installed over the in-room sink. Separating the sink from shower/toilet area allows multiple students within a suite to get ready at the same time. The building has been outfitted with all new anti-microbial, anti-allergenic mattresses. Each room sports beige walls and trim and an accent wall, which varies by level. The first floor bedrooms boast a mustard accent, the second floor features burnt orange and the third floor a soothing avocado green. Quite frankly, the building is awesome, and so is the community within it. Yes, indeed, Wallace is positively fancy-schmancy. Drury alums and parents, you called and the administration acted. Wallace is snazzier than ever and is most definitely not your grandma’s residence hall. There are numerous naming opportunities for you to be a part of Wallace Hall. You can make a gift in honor of a loved one, or you can partner with suitemates, roommates or friends to remember the time you lived in Wallace. There are 66 rooms and a few public places where you can stamp a special legacy on the new Wallace in memory of a mother, a loved one, a friend, a professor or staff member, a sorority sister or pledge class. A gift in any amount is greatly appreciated, and all donors will be honored on a Master Donor Plaque. To discuss gift options, please contact Susan Kirby, office of alumni & development, (417) 873-7354 or [email protected]. 13 G R E E N An artist’s rendering shows a green, cool place to relax on campus in the space left by the razing of Turner and Belle halls. With the O’Reilly Family Event Center, the Wallace Residence Hall renovation and now the bike path and green space, everything is looking up at Drury. Plus, I’m getting a good work out.” Katya Lyukina ’11 Drury Student 16 The Drury campus community agrees that our beautifully maintained campus grounds are part of the reason they feel so connected to the university. The quirky gathering spaces, towering trees and tucked-away gardens inspire us all. This special place gives you the feeling of being in nature while also being functional for studying, holding class, hanging out, or participating in various recreational activities. The campus grounds continually evolve with our students’ changing needs, and several changes have recently occurred or are currently in development. The Kellogg Green, which fills the sites where Belle Hall and Turner Hall once stood, was opened up with the razing of these buildings last winter. Drury trustee Tom Kellogg funded the removal of the buildings and provided the opportunity to develop a multifunctional outdoor space that serves the needs of all of our students, faculty, staff and campus visitors. The President’s Council on Sustainability led the initiative to survey all members of the campus community in the spring of 2010 to find out what they would like to see in that space. That long wish list was then given to local landscape architect, Guy Headland, who developed several design concepts that incorporated the most common and feasible ideas. The final plans were presented to the campus community and to the Board of Trustees in May 2010. All who saw the plans were excited about the possibilities for a central campus location for outdoor gathering that would link student life, academic and athletic sections of campus. During the summer of 2010, initial work to prepare the site for all of the planned elements began with the removal of the road that separated the Belle site from the Turner site. This included removal of 40 feet of the parking lot to the east of the site, and the building up of dirt for a relatively flat grade over that section to provide an open space for intramural games, ultimate Frisbee, picnics, and studying. A new sidewalk meanders through the grand old oaks from the southwest corner by Drury Lane into the center of the green space and out again to the northwest corner. This fall, a group of stu- dents from the School of Architecture will design the patio dining area with a pergola or arbor, which will be at the north end of the space, connecting it to the Findlay Student Center south entrance. This patio will be raised three or four feet above the recreational field below, so the patio itself will serve the dual purpose of a dining and observation area above the field. It will also serve as stage from which concerts and other performances can occur with the audience seated on the lawn. Other elements added this fall include some seating zones to serve as outdoor classrooms and other tucked away benches for studying or chatting with friends. Next spring, we will plant a colorful wildflower garden on the south end of the space. We expect additional elements to appear over the next few years, including sculptures, intriguing structures to climb and swing on, fruit orchards and vegetable gardens. Across the Lane, a clay-colored bike path was installed, labeled with imprinted bike emblems, to serve as a link for College Park residents needing to get from the Calhoun and Bennett intersection into the central axis of the campus of Drury Lane. To ease congestion caused by pedestrians and cyclists sharing sidewalks and to aid in the safety of all, the bike lane was positioned alongside or near an existing sidewalk that extends through the President’s House yard, and alongside the north side of Sunderland Field. The bike lane is just one piece of the program the President’s Council on Sustainability developed to expand our cycling culture on campus. In partnership with the President’s Council on Wellness, the council also purchased 40 new Jamis mountain bikes to check out to students at no charge on a semester basis. In addition, 20 more used bikes were tuned up and made available for short-term checkouts for daily use or weekend bike rides. To support that program, a bicycle maintenance shop has been established in the President’s House Garage with two students who are experienced bicycle technicians running it. They are maintaining the university-owned bikes and will also offer light maintenance services for the personal bikes of any student. The development of the Kellogg Green and the laying of the north-end bike path, along with the new bike loan and maintenance programs, are serving the needs of our students to stay healthy and active and to enjoy the outdoor beauty of our campus. 15 N E WS & N OT E S F RO M D RU RY U N I VE R S I T Y 2 0 0 9-2 010 O’Reilly Family Event Center Opens 2 0 0 9 - 2 0 1 0 H I G H L I G H T S Faculty, staff and their families joined students at the FSC fountains for the annual celebration before classes began. This fun night marks the end of freshman orientation and features the traditions of Pineapple Whip and a fireworks show. 18 Drury opened up the new O’Reilly Family Event Center with ten events in the tenth month of 2010 culminating with the Pointer Sisters Grand Opening concert on Oct. 30. The O’Reilly Family Event Center project broke ground in May 2009, and the public got its first look inside on Oct. 1. The events included: • Friday, Oct. 1, Celebrate Good Times on the Plaza, featuring building tours, a barbecue, a concert with M-Dock Band and former Lady Panther Liz Moriondo, and a fireworks show. • Saturday, Oct. 2, Alumni Weekend, Family Day, and the Panther Run benefiting Care to Learn. • Friday, Oct. 8, the first sporting event: the Panther volleyball team hosted the University of Missouri of Science and Technology. • Saturday, Oct. 9, Springfield Symphony Pops concert series featuring music from famous movies. • Friday, Oct. 15, the Panthers and Lady Panthers entertained fans with Hoops Hysteria. • Saturday, Oct. 16, Hammons School of Architecture’s 25th Anniversary Gala. • Saturday, Oct. 23, the ninth annual Drury Athletics Auction. • Thursday, Oct. 28, Axel and the Equators brought a night of swinging blues music. • Friday, Oct. 29, band Lifehouse joined by 2009 American Idol winner Kris Allen. • Saturday, Oct. 30, the formal building dedication, ribbon cutting and lively concert featuring the Pointer Sisters. The big events continue into November with former Hootie and the Blowfish front man Darius Rucker and funny man Bill Engvall scheduled. Drury Celebrates Record Enrollment Drury has a record enrollment of 5,625 students for fall semester 2010 following the census of the school’s multiple campuses and online programs. This figure includes adult evening and online programs, graduate classes and the traditional Day School. Drury’s traditional undergraduate Day School gained 81 students from fall 2009 for a record 1,631 students, which beats the previous record of 1,608 set in 2007. The 1,631 students include a record freshman class of 406 and a total of 538 new undergraduates. “Even in a difficult economic environment, students continue to see the value that a Drury education will bring them while they’re here on campus and long after they’ve graduated,” says Drury President Todd Parnell. “Everyone at Drury has done a good job of communicating that value and benefit over the last year and we see the rewards of that effort in the new enrollment numbers.” Drury’s College of Graduate and Continuing Studies set new all-time records for student enrollment, as well. CGCS has 3,457 undergraduate students taking 34,667 credit hours-both numbers are records. Besides the main campus in Springfield, CGCS offers courses through nine locations across southwest Missouri in addition to online classes. This semester, 537 students are enrolled in Drury’s eight graduate programs. Drury CGCS offers master’s degrees in art, business, communication, criminal justice, criminology, education, music therapy, studio art & theory, and teaching. Enrollment in online courses has grown 14 percent over fall 2009. Drury’s online courses make up 30 percent of CGCS class offerings. Drury offers 11 bachelor’s degrees that can be completed entirely online. Top Female Communicators The Association for Women in Communications (AWC) hon- ored communication student Lauren Ormsby and Communication Associate Professor Regina Waters, Ph.D., with two of the organization’s top awards. Ormsby, a senior at Drury, earned the AWC’s Rising Star award. Established in 1990, the Rising Star Award is given to one student member out of all AWC chapters in the nation and is the highest honor the AWC can bestow on a student member. This is the second straight year a Drury student has earned the award. Mallory Noelke was honored in 2009. Ormsby is a double major in advertising and public relations, works in the communications office of a Springfield hospital and is an active member of Drury’s Ad Team. Waters earned the AWC’s Outstanding Faculty Advisor award. Besides teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Drury’s communication department, she also provides leadership for Drury’s AWC student chapter (Drury Communication Networks). She has served as the chapter advisor since 1996 and currently serves as program chair for the Springfield AWC professional chapter. Architecture Celebrates 25 Years Drury University’s Hammons School of Architecture celebrated 25 years of educating students on Oct. 15 and 16. Accomplishments for the school include: • Accreditation from the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). • Drury architecture students played an integral role in building the first ever LEED Platinum certified Habitat for Humanity home for a local family, as well as completing projects now featured in the Springfield-Branson National Airport and the Commercial Street Farmers Market Pavilion. • HSA’s Center for Community Studies has helped more than 80 communities, governments and not-for-profits with design and planning issues. In some cases, the students’ work has helped the organizations secure grants for community revitalization. “To date, over 500 students have graduated from the School of Architecture,” said Michael Buono, director of the Hammons School of Architecture. “The weekend will be an opportunity for the Drury community and alumni to come together to celebrate this anniversary.” Minority Entrepreneur Conference Held Drury’s Edward Jones Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (EJC) hosted the first Minority Entrepreneurship Conference on Saturday, Oct. 9. The conference provided an opportunity for minority entrepreneurs to learn basic entrepreneurship skills and also hear about contracting with the government and specific funding opportunities as well as network with other entrepreneurs and professionals that can help with their businesses. “The addition of the Minority Entrepreneurship Conference is a natural fit with our mission both at the Edward Jones Center and Drury at large,” says Dr. Kelley Still, executive director of the EJC. “Our relationships with the minority community are important to us and have allowed us to develop meaningful programming for entrepreneurs in the community.” Bike Culture Established In an effort to increase bicycle use, decrease the use of fossil fuels and promote a wellness culture, Drury has 60 bikes available for use by students starting this semester. There is no cost to students to use the bikes, whether they are checked out for a few hours or for the entire semester. “This decision was made after a year-long discussion in the President’s Council on Sustainability about ways that we can enhance the bicycle culture on campus and encourage alternative transportation, particularly for students who live on campus,” says Dr. Wendy Anderson, director of campus sustainability. “We want to encourage 17 students to get to class in ways other than their cars.” Springfield Bicycle Company sold Drury 40 Jamis mountain bikes at a deep discount. The new bikes are available for semester-long checkout. Twenty more used bicycles were donated by campus security, and those bikes are available for short-term rentals. Each bike will come with a U-style lock. The President’s Council on Sustainability has hired students with mechanical abilities to help maintain the bikes. Students also have a bike trail on campus. The approximately 175-yard paved path connects the Jefferson Park apartment complex on the northwest end of campus to the circle at the north end of Drury Lane. Construction on the trail was completed over the summer. Drury Named a Best Midwest College Drury is included in The Princeton Review’s list of the best colleges in the Midwest. Drury is one of 152 institutions the education services company recommends in its “Best in the Midwest” section of its website feature, “2011 Best Colleges: Region by Region.” Drury’s profile can be found at The Princeton Review’s website. “It is gratifying that The Princeton Review recognizes the quality education Drury provides its students. Beyond the integration of liberal learning and professional programs, we are proud that the Princeton Review acknowledges the robust student life and study abroad opportunities that extend education beyond the classroom at Drury,” says Charles Taylor, vice president for academic affairs. “We’re pleased to recom- Bike trails are part of the plan for the new green space on campus. 18 mend Drury University to users of our site as one of the best schools to earn their undergraduate degree. We chose it and the other terrific institutions we name as ‘regional best’ colleges mainly for their excellent academic programs,” says Robert Franek, senior vice president of publishing. Instructor Named Educator of the Year Drury online instructor Ruth Schafer received the Educator of the Year award from the Missouri Distance Learning Association (MoDLA). Schafer is an adjunct instructor in the English department. She teaches English composition to incoming freshmen for Drury’s online programs. “Ruth’s passion for what she does inspires all who have the pleasure to work with her to do even more. She is truly a gifted and innovative teacher and well deserving of this award,” says Steve Hynds, director of Online Education. Latinas Explore Ideas at Drury Twelve Latina teenagers from southwest Missouri spent a week at Drury from July 19-23 for the Campamento de Alumnas Hispanas (Summer Camp for Latina girls). The dozen girls taking part in the program are self-identified Latinas, entering the eighth or ninth grades in the fall of 2010 and they all had to apply and gain acceptance into the program. The students lived in Drury dormitories and ate in the university’s cafeteria during their stay at no cost. The theme of the week was “Exploring Identity” and activities included academic and non-academic pursuits. In the classroom, the students received instruction from Drury faculty on literature, women’s studies, computer programming and writing. Out of the classroom, the girls learned about meditation, physical education, jewelry making, and self-defense. The project was led by Drs. Jayne White and Rebecca Denton from the School of Education and Child Development; Dr. Elizabeth Nichols, professor of Spanish and Dr. Tim Robbins, instructor of Spanish. Four Drury students supervised the campers as resident advisors: Barb Johnson, Denise de León, Krista Boettler and Jazmin Roman. Summer Scholars Come to Drury The third straight year of Drury’s Summer Scholars program for African-American teenagers took place July 5. For two weeks, more than 50 Springfield high school and middle school students experienced college life. “This program is consistent with Drury’s mission to enrich the community and build an ethnically diverse campus,” says Dr. Mark Wood, professor of chemistry. “We were extremely proud that the Summer Scholars program played a role in Drury receiving the Educational Partnership Award from the Springfield chapter of the NAACP.” The Summer Scholars program was founded in July 2008 by three Drury professors – Drs. Bruce Callen, Peter Meidlinger and Wood – to give 15 African-American middle school boys a residential college experience. This year, the number of students has more than tripled, thanks in large part to the inclusion of female students in 2009. OCSS Helps the Environment Drury’s Ozarks Center for Sustainable Solutions (OCSS) received $739,200 in grant funding from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reduce diesel pollution in southwest Missouri. The Missouri Green Fleet grant, awarded through the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, will provide a total of $1,872,730 in grant money for three target areas: St. Louis, Kansas City and Springfield. OCSS retrofitted 118 school buses operating in the area with fuel-operated heaters or diesel oxidation catalysts, replacing eight older school buses with brand new buses that will meet 2010 emission standards and retrofitting 14 trash trucks and 45 concrete mixers with diesel oxidation catalysts. These projects are expected to keep nearly 13,000 tons of diesel emissions from entering Missouri’s air through the life of the buses, locomotives and other diesel equipment that will be replaced or retrofitted. Artwork Celebrated at the Missouri Hotel For the 10th straight year, Drury graduate students partnered with The Kitchen, Inc., to create and inspire art with residents of the Missouri Hotel. The artwork produced by Missouri Hotel residents, a shelter for homeless single females, families or couples, was shown in June. The theme of the art show was “Your life is a masterpiece: What are you creating?” The graduate course, Building Community through the Arts, is designed to offer students an approach to creativity in everyday living and learning, while giving students the opportunity to make a difference within the Drury neighborhood by introducing residents of the Missouri Hotel to visual arts, music and literature. “It is about the art of living well. Living creatively through art,” says Dr. Rebecca Burrell, Drury adjunct professor of education. Besides the opportunity to work with the Missouri Hotel residents, students gain an understanding of visual and performing arts while also examining poverty in America. Blind Students Learn about Growth Opportunities Around 15 blind high school students from three states spent a week on the Drury campus, June 21-25, to learn about opportunities in higher education for students with disabilities. “There is 80 percent unemployment among legally blind people,” says Dr. Chris Craig, director of the School of Education and Child Development, who is blind. “We want kids to understand that college is a possibility and that we would want them here at Drury.” The students, who came from Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma, learned about the special technologies available to them, including programs that turn text into speech and electronic Braille note-takers. In addition, the students attended classes, learned about social opportunities in college, received an introduction to wellness and gained knowledge about the non-academic aspects of college, such as, how to deal with a roommate. Shawn Askinosie, who owns Askinosie Chocolate in Springfield, hosted the students at his chocolate-making facility for a tour and some simulations involving the production of chocolate bars. Drury master’s degree 19 students in the class “Psychology of the Exceptional Child” worked with the blind students as well as graduate students from other universities who are pursuing a master’s in special education with an emphasis in orientation and mobility. Graduate Receives Fulbright 2010 Drury graduate Brett Marler recently received a Fulbright grant to teach English in Turkey this fall. The Fulbright grant, awarded on behalf of the Institution of International Education, will support Marler’s nine-month Fulbright-Yök English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) in Turkey. There, he and 35 other ETAs will assist in teaching English classes at new universities in central, southeastern and eastern Turkey for 20 hours a week. Additionally, Marler and the other ETAs will act as ambassadors to help students gain a broader contextual understanding of the United States. Civil War Workshops Held This summer, Drury Associate Professor of English Dr. Randy Fuller hosted two, week-long interactive civil war workshops for kindergarten through 12th grade teachers from around the nation. The workshops, titled “Wilson’s Creek: How a Forgotten Battle Saved Missouri and Changed the Course of the Civil War,” were held on Drury’s campus and the historic Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield. Each morning, participants took part in seminars with premier Civil War scholars including: John Stauffer, Harvard University; Lucas Morell, Washington and Lee; Angela Miller, Washington University; Shawn Alexander, Kansas Faculty parade down Drury Lane during spring commencement. 20 University; and William Piston, Missouri State University. In the afternoon, educators traveled outside the classroom to visit Wilson’s Creek’s museums, battle sites and library. “We uncovered the significance of the Battle of Wilson’s Creek to the issues of race, slavery, and sectional identity that led to the Civil War,” Fuller says. “In the process, we journeyed into the soul of America.” Last fall, Fuller received $160,231 in grant money from the National Endowment for the Humanities to start the workshop. NAACP Recognizes Drury The Springfield chapter of the NAACP presented Drury with the Educational Partnership Award at their annual Freedom Fund Ball on May 16. Drury first teamed up with the local NAACP chapter in spring 2009, to provide office space for members in the Drury University Diversity Center at historic Washington Avenue Baptist Church. Since then, Drury has continued its partnership with the organization through a variety of programs, including Drury University’s Summer Scholars. “Drury was recognized because of its outstanding educational partnership with the NAACP,” says Francine Pratt, current president of the Springfield chapter of the NAACP. Pratt went on to highlight several of the projects that the NAACP and Drury have collaborated. “At a ‘Gathering’ meeting we discussed the concept of exposing children to a college environment and Drury created the Summer Scholars Program. Through an e-mail exchange, we noted that we were looking for office space and Drury provided us office space and a telephone. In preparing for the Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest, we were looking for someone to coor- dinate the effort and Drury’s students, under the leadership of Peter Meidlinger, read over 300 essays during finals week.” Alumnus Receives Honorary Degree Drury conferred degrees to 585 students during the 137th spring commencement. James Bone, a 1980 Drury graduate, member of the Panthers’ 1979 NAIA national championship team, and a member of the Drury Board of Trustees addressed the 234 graduates from Drury’s traditional Day School. “My education at Drury allowed me to enjoy a successful career in financial services as a senior executive responsible for operations in North America, South America, Canada and India,” Bone said. “As the son of a steel mill and postal worker from Chattanooga, Tenn., I could not have imagined how Drury could make such a difference in my life.” Bone was also awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters. Bone recently founded Global Compliance Advisors, LLC. His company provides advanced compliance and operational risk approaches for firms. Before founding his company, Bone was a senior vice president of risk management for Fidelity Investments Institutional Services Company, Inc. Earlier in the day, 351 graduates earned degrees from Drury’s College of Graduate and Continuing Studies (CGCS); 48 of those were master’s degrees and the other 303 were undergraduate degrees. The new dean of CGCS, Dr. Brian Holloway, sent the graduates off with a message about what he called “the gospel of self-improvement.” “Use the lessons you’ve learned, never give up,” Holloway said. “Be a beacon, be a shining light for the gospel of self-improvement and spread that light throughout the land.” Alumni Donate to O’Reilly Family Event Center Drury graduates Craig and Tracy Curry donated $500,000 as the final major gift to finish construction costs for the O’Reilly Family Event Center. For their gift, Drury’s athletic field and training facilities was named the Curry Sports Complex. This designation encompasses the field and track at Harrison Stadium along with Drury’s indoor training facility at the corner of Central and Summit. Harrison Stadium will retain its name. Craig Curry graduated from Drury in 1983 where he studied economics and business administration. Now, he’s the chairman and chief executive officer for Central Bank in Lebanon, Mo. Curry’s wife, Tracy (Schay) Curry studied sociology and criminology at Drury before graduating in 1984. Longtime Drury bookstore director Myrna Clickenbeard is Tracy Curry’s mother. “Tracy and I are excited to be involved with such a great project for Drury University and the Springfield community,” Craig Curry said. “The O’Reilly Family Event Center is a wonderful addition for the Drury community offering far more than just a sports arena. We see our gift for the naming of the Curry Sports Complex to also do more for Drury. Our time at Drury was memorable and rewarding. It has enabled us to make this gift, and it feels great to be able to give back to an organization that did so much for us and continues to excel today.” Time Capsule Opened A 62-year-old time capsule was discovered in the cornerstone of Turner Hall. At a ceremony on campus, Red Richmond, director of facilities services, cut open the copper box, and Archivist Bill Garvin pulled out mildewed contents to reveal: • A copy of the Springfield Leader and Press from April 20, 1948. The paper included an article previewing the setting of the cornerstone for Turner Hall the next day at Drury. • A copy of the Springfield Daily News from April 21, 1948, that included an article about moonshine. • A copy of the Drury College catalog from 1947-48. • A copy of student newspaper the Mirror from April 10, 1948. “This is a testament to the optimism of the people who placed this time capsule 62 years and 14 days ago, that they were confident that Drury University would be around today,” Garvin said. 21 Drury Helps Small Towns Students working in Drury’s Center for Community Studies (CCS) spent the semester working with Montrose and Hermitage, two smaller communities seeking revitalization efforts. Together, the communities and students developed a plan to help the cities attract businesses, increase population and retain or establish an identity. The plans that Drury students conceive and give to the communities help CCS cities receive grants and funding to carry out the proposed plans with professional architects and planners. In the past several years, CCS has worked with Lamar, Webb City and Brookfield, all of which received the Downtown Revitalization and Economic Assistance for Missouri (DREAM) initiative. The DREAM initiative is a designation that allows smaller towns the same access to economic development tools as larger communities. Drury Honored for Being Environmentally Responsible Drury is one of the country’s most environmentally responsible colleges according to The Princeton Review. The nationally known education services company selected Drury for inclusion in a unique resource created for college applicants — “The Princeton Review’s Guide to 286 Green Colleges.” Drury is the only school from Missouri to make the list. Developed by The Princeton Review in partnership with the U.S. Green Building Council, the “Guide to 286 Green Colleges” is the first, free comprehensive guidebook focused solely on institutions of higher education that have demonstrated an above average commitment to sustainability in terms of campus infrastructure, activities and initiatives. “We are honored to be recognized among the top 5 percent of universities who have made a strong commitment to sustainability,” says Dr. Wendy Anderson, director of Campus 22 Sustainability. “We hope this will put Drury on the radar for students who are interested in a university that values sustainability.” The Mirror Wins First Place Student newspaper the Mirror won first place for best overall newspaper in its division at the Missouri College Media Association (MCMA) awards. The Mirror was also awarded sweepstakes in its division, a recognition given to the college newspaper winning the most award points overall. “The staff has worked hard over the past year to cover the Drury community, and these awards validate that dedication and hard work,” says Dr. Jonathan Groves, assistant professor of communication. “It’s incredibly important. It means we are doing something right. It’s validation that the university students are producing a viable news medium that serves the Drury community.” Parade Honors Swimming and Diving Teams A parade and celebration honored the Drury men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams on their back-to-back dual national championships won in March at the Division II meet in Canton, Ohio. The Central High School Kilties joined the Drury community in the parade to honor the two teams. The parade finished at the Findlay Student Center fountain circle where the teams signed autographs and shared ice cream with their classmates, teachers and fans. Drury picked up its eighth men’s title and seventh women’s NCAA titles on March 13 at the Division II swimming championships in Canton, Ohio. The Panthers now have swept both titles in 1999, 2007, 2009 and 2010. In addition, Drury men’s sophomore swimmer Jun Han Kim was named National Men’s Swimmer of the Year. Video Students Win Awards Drury video students, led by instructor Brian Shipman, won more first place awards than any other college or university in Missouri at the 2010 Missouri Broadcast Educators Association Awards Competition. This is the second straight year that Drury students have dominated the first place awards. Bobby Hearn won first place awards for sports story, documentary, sports show and news story. Jared Hall won first place for music video while Charles Yeager won first place for public service announcement. Naru Narayan won first place in the script category, and Chris Beckman won first place for his work in computer animation. John Miller won first place audio for sports play by play. Honorable mentions went to Sophie Parker for a commercial, John Miller for sports story and Stephanie Greene for experimental video. Business School Achieves AACSB Accreditation The Breech School of Business Administration achieved accreditation of its business degree program by recent action of the Board of Directors of AACSB International – The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Founded in 1916, AACSB International is the longest service and largest global accrediting body for business schools that offer undergraduate and graduate degrees in business and accounting. Less than 5 percent of business schools worldwide have earned this distinguished hallmark of excellence in management education. To achieve accreditation, an institution’s business program must undergo a meticulous internal review and evaluation process. Architecture Students Design, Build Kiosk at the Airport In March, Drury University architecture students designed and built an art kiosk at the Springfield-Branson National Airport. The kiosk is a walk-through structure in the Great Hall at the airport between two baggage carousels, and it is designed to be more than a typical art display. “Instead of just creating something that people would walk by and look at, we wanted to create a space that would encourage people to experience the art itself,” said Patrick Butler, Drury architecture student. Four students in the DesignBuild class in Hammons School of Architecture conceived the kiosk on paper and then set about putting it together. Constructing the kiosk at Drury challenged the students. “The unique part is that we have to fabricate the kiosk off-site, assemble it to make sure it all works, disassemble the structure, ship it to the airport and then assemble it onsite,” said Traci Sooter, Drury architecture professor. The four students are: Patrick Butler, Justin Bruce, Austin Abbott and Daniel Renner. Architecture Shop Supervisor Stanley Rone co-taught the class with Sooter. Prayer Service Raises Funds for Haitian Earthquake Relief Amidst the busy start to the spring semester, about 50 people took time at noon for a prayer service at Drury’s Stone Chapel to remember the victims of the Haitian earthquake. “Part of the mission of Drury University is to provide students with a global perspective,” says Chaplain Dr. Peter Browning. “We could not begin the new semester without taking time to note this tragedy and do what we can to help the victims.” The prayer service raised $1,589. That money was donated to Springfield-based Convoy of Hope to assist with its humanitarian work in Haiti. Ron Showers, outreach director with Convoy of Hope, reported at the service that his organization had already distributed 294,000 meals to the people of Haiti. Sister School Facilities Dedicated In 1995, Drury University professors Rabindra and Protima Roy founded the Hem Sheela Model School in Durgapur, India. Drury’s sister school is a private K-12 institution that educates 3,350 students from all over India. Now, thanks to donations from the former chairman of Drury’s Board of Trustees John Beuerlein and his wife Crystal, Hem Sheela Model School is getting a state-of-the-art recreation facility, a high-tech science laboratory including biotechnology, a chemistry laboratory, a new library, and an advanced computer laboratory. The crown jewel of the improvements is the 100,000 square foot recreation facility that will feature a volleyball court, a basketball gym, a swimming pool and an auditorium with a 1,500-seat capacity. Currently, the only physical education opportunities for Hem Sheela students are outdoor soccer and track. “This magnificent arena will help to develop complete human beings by combining excellence in academics with facilities that develop the mind, body and soul,” says Dr. Rabindra Roy, Drury professor of chemistry. “This state-of-the-art facility will be used throughout the year, not only by Hem Sheela students, but also for nationwide competitions with other schools.” The national champion swimming and diving teams celebrated with a parade. 23 TOTAL INCOME NET ENDOWMENT ASSETS in millions of dollars 84 84 74 GRADUATE SCHOOL ENROLLMENT 458 68 71 2009 2010 476 505 526 537 Tuition & Fees Auxiliary Enterprises 2006 Private Gifts for Operations B Y Federal Grants T H E Private Gifts for arena & Endowment 2007 2008 TOTAL GIVING in millions of dollars 2006 2007 2008 2009 EVENING SCHOOL ENROLLMENT 14.3 State Grants 2010 2843 2931 N U M B E R S 3443 3457 2009 2010 3040 7.3 OPERATING EXPENSES 5.1 5.8 4.7 Debt Service 2006 Institutional Support Plant Operations Instruction & Academic Support 2007 2008 2009 2010 DAY SCHOOL ENROLLMENT 1606 1606 2006 2007 1555 1550 1631 2008 2009 2010 2006 2007 2008 FIRST YEAR TO SOPHOMORE STUDENT RETENTION STATISTICS, DAY SCHOOL 81.8% 82.1% 80.9% 82.6% 82.7% 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 Athletics Student Services 26 Auxiliary Enterprise Expenses 25 DRURY UNIVERSITY STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL POSITION MAY 31 ASSETS: Cash and cash equivalents -
