ALL CHALLENGE CUPS AND TROPHIES TO BE RETURNED TO THE SOCIETY BY FRIDAY 1st SEPTEMBER 2016, CLEANED & ENGRAVED PLEASE. Competitors in all Hedgelaying classes must be ready to draw for positions at 9.15am and finish their work by 2.45pm. Late finishing could result in points being forfeited. Late arrivals will be placed in the next available section of their class. 2. Hedges to be laid Dorset Style. Hedge to be laid in the (now recognised by NHLS) Dorset Style, low to the bank/ground, tightly woven with itself and bonds/binders used internally and externally as and where required to secure. The finished hedge should be a half barrel finish at a height of 2ft 6”- 3 ft. 3. All hedgelaying competitors who finish their work to the satisfaction of the judges and who do not receive prize money will be offered £6 towards their expenses. 4. Novice is a Competitor who has not won a 1st prize in any previous Melplash Agricultural Society Hedgelaying Match. 5. No help must be given to competitors in any way except in Novice classes where verbal advice may be given. 6. Local entries are confined to person’s resident within a radius of 12 miles of Melplash Church. 7. Competitors must comply with Health & Safety Regulations. In respect of the use of CHAINSAWS the following requirements are for all competitors: 8. To be permitted to use a chainsaw at the competition competitors must hold a current Certificate of Competence. (The need for adequate training IS a legal requirement). The use of top handle saws is not permitted. 9. Personal protective equipment to current standards must be worn whenever the saw is operated, no matter how short the time or how infrequent that operation may be. Any competitors using a chainsaw without personal protective clothing will be disqualified. 10. Any competitor without certification to use a chainsaw may request assistance from the steward when cutting is required. 11. Entries for the competition are accepted on the basis that all prospective competitors understand and accept the above conditions. The receipt of an entry form from a competitor by email or otherwise is the competitor’s confirmation that they accept and will abide by these rules. Entries received by email will be retained on file and classed as being signed and in agreement with these rules. 12. Disclaimer of Liability: The Melplash Agricultural Society Limited shall not be liable for the death of, or injury to, or for any damage to any property of, or any losses, or other liability, incurred by the competitor, his servants or agents except where such death, injury or loss is due to the negligence of the Melplash Agricultural Society Limited. SCHEDULE FOR THE HEDGELAYING CLASSES Competitors may use a chain-saw in any class but MUST HOLD A Certificate of Competence and Safety gear MUST be worn A complimentary lunch is provided to all entrants. All Hedges to be laid Dorset Style – see Rule 2. No Entry Fee PRIZE MONEY FOR ALL CLASSES 1st £50; 2nd £40; 3rd £30; 4th £10 CLASS 1 HEDGING LOCAL who shall best cut and lay 10 meters of hedge. This is a local class, please see Rule 6. THE CECIL A. MARSH MEMORIAL PERPETUAL CHALLENGE CUP kindly presented by his son, J.W.O. Marsh Esq., will be awarded to the Winner of class 1. CLASS 2 HEDGING NOVICE who shall best cut and lay 7 meters of hedge. This is a Novice class, please see Rule 4. Previous winners of this class must move up to next level - either Local, Intermediate, Open, Open Pairs or Ladies THE MARCUS BERESFORD TROPHY kindly presented by Marcus Beresford, CBE will be awarded to the winner of class 2. CLASS 3 HEDGING INTERMEDIATE who shall best cut 9 meters of hedge. Winners of this class must move up to next level - either Local, Open, Open Pairs or Ladies. CLASS 4 HEDGING OPEN CLASS who shall best cut and lay 10 meters of hedge. This class is for competitors outside the local area (see Rule 6). THE ELIZABETH LADY WILIAMS PERPETUAL CHALLENGE CUP will be awarded to the winner of class 4. CLASS 5 LADIES CLASS who shall best cut and lay 7 meters of hedge. THE BILL HOOK TROPHY will be awarded to the winner of Class 5. CLASS 6 OPEN PAIRS who shall best cut and lay 8/9meters in 5 hours. THE BARTLETTS (DORSET) Ltd Cup will be awarded to the winner of Class 6. CLASS 7 NOVICE PAIRS who shall best cut and lay 8/9 meters in 5 hours. This is a Novice class, please see Rule 4. Previous winners of this class must move up to another class. C10 SILVER PERPETUAL CHALLENGE CUP PRESENTED BY CLEEVES & EDWINA PALMER for the overall Champion Hedgelayer. THE PHILIP HARDWILL CUP will be awarded to the highest placed Young Farmer overall.
