OUR PROPERTY STORY
KŌLOA, KAUA‘I
A tiny town on the south shore of Kaua’i, Kōloa has played a significant role in
Hawai’i’s history. The first Hawaiians to encounter Westerners in 1778 were from
the shores of Kōloa. Captain James Cook’s description of the discovery of Hawai’i
and his encounter with the native people were the beginning of the Hawaiian
Islands’ written history.
Kōloa, which has been interpreted as “Tall Cane,” is an appropriate name for the
place
where
the
sugar
industry
in
Hawai’i
started.
Ancient
Polynesian settlers brought sugar cane with them to Hawai’i on voyaging canoes,
along with 30 or so plants used for food, clothing, shelter,
medicine and more. Sugar cane was chewed for energy, to clean teeth and as a
sweet. In ancient times, Kōloa Marsh was famous for its large size and the sugar
cane grew abundantly around the edge. However, it was not until 1835 that sugar
cane was grown as a commercial endeavor.
Kōloa Plantation was the first in Hawai’i to successfully mill cane
commercially for export and brought enormous change throughout the
islands as a major industry for the next century and a half. Though cane is no
longer grown commercially on Kaua’i, the plantations’ melding of
cultures – Hawaiian, Chinese, Japanese, German, Portuguese and
Filipino – left an indelible mark. The legacy of Kōloa’s plantation days
continues today through the people, culture and food of Kaua’i.

TRANSLATION
Aloha, and mahalo for joining us for Starwood Hawai‘i’s celebration of
Hawaiian history and culture.
In the Hawaiian Language, E Ho‘ohui Kākou means “to bring everyone
together.” In the month of October, our 11 Starwood Hawai‘i resorts
come together to introduce and share Hawaiian cultural traditions and
customs with both kama‘āina (residents) and malihini (visitors).
Why celebrate E Ho‘ohui Kākou? Because it is our sincere desire to
for each of our guests to experience the culture that makes Hawai‘i
such a special place.
This week, our Hawaiʻi resorts honor our host culture, and we
welcome you to join us for the various activities, events, musical
performances and service opportunities rooted in the
Hawaiian culture throughout the week.

The Hawaiian name for this voyage, Mālama Honua, means “to care for
our Earth.” Living on an island chain teaches us that our natural world is
a gift with limits and that we must carefully steward this gift if we are to
survive together. As we work to protect cultural and environmental resources for our children’s future, the Pacific voyaging traditions teach us
to venture beyond the horizon to connect and to learn with others.
For more information on the Hōkūle‘a and the
Polynesian Voyaging Society please visit the website at

————
In 2013, Kyo-ya Hotels & Resorts LP and Starwood Hotels & Resorts
Hawai’i proudly announced a $500,000 makana (gift) to the Polynesian
Voyaging Society’s worldwide expedition.
Starwood Hawai‘i’s sponsorship of Hōkūle‘a furthers our programs to
protect and preserve Hawai‘i’s extraordinary environment and unique
culture locally, and to share this remarkable journey with a worldwide
audience.
