Welcome to the 31st Annual Distance Cruise. We are excited about this year’s
voyage with delightful planned events and great company.
This year’s distance cruise will take us back to some of our favorite stops:
Essex, Sag Harbor, Three Mile Harbor and Stonington. We will kick off this
extraordinary week with dinner at Essex Yacht Club. With fair tides we will
enjoy a late afternoon dinghy raft‐up at Three Mile Harbor. We will close the
week with a Stand‐Down dinner at Stonington Harbor Yacht Club. There is a
reason why we continue to participate on the distance cruise – good food,
good friends & good boating.

Sag Harbor Yacht Club is slightly over 118 miles from RYC (Via I‐95 & I‐495), estimated 2 hrs and 20 min depending on traffic (avoid travel during rush hour). Three Mile Harbor

Essex Yacht Club is slightly over 75miles from RYC (Via I‐95) estimated 1hr and 30min depending on traffic. Amtrak trains available from Stamford to Old Saybrook which, is just 15min cab ride to EYC. East Hampton Point Marina is 123 miles from RYC (Via I‐95 & I‐495), estimated 2 hrs and 35 min depending on traffic (avoid travel during rush hour). Stonington –

Take Exit 91 from I‐95 (just west of Rhode Island) and turn South toward the ocean. Proceed approximately .3 mile and turn left on North Main Street (sign on left says Route 1). Proceed 1.6 miles to stop light and cross US Rte. 1 to first stop sign, .7 mile.
Turn left at stop sign for 200 yards; then right at next stop sign. Proceed over bridge and go straight onto Water Street which curves to the left. Continue for about 6/10 of a mile to Cannon Square where you will see a red brick building on your right. The clubhouse is located in that building. Parking is available in the lot to your right or on the streets of Stonington. The entrance to the clubhouse is on the first level terrace. The entrance is the door on the left side with the SHYC awning. If using GPS the physical address is 32 Water Street, Stonington, CT 06378.

The charming and historic town of Essex was founded in the 1600s.
Settlers were attracted by the ability to harness local streams and the
Connecticut river to power mills for boat building. Some 600 vessels
were launched from the Essex yards. During the War of 1812 British
troops attacked and destroyed 28 vessels.

Approach to Essex

Flood tide begins at the mouth of the Connecticut River at 9:17am on July 25th.
•
Built in 1886, the Saybrook
breakwater lighthouse marks the river’s entrance.
•
Follow the channel north for about two miles to the 1907 Old Lyme Drawbridge. Vertical clearance is 19’. If the bridge is down, you could contact the bridge on VHF Channel 13; there is also an electric sign showing how long the wait may be. •
Essex is another 1.5 miles beyond the bridge

For those who arranged their berth and mooring through the Essex YC, after passing buoy #25, please call Marcus, its Waterfront Manager, on VHF Channel 68. Boats which could not be accommodated at Essex YC likely have been assigned by Essex YC to space next door at Brewer’s Dauntless Marina. Both share the same mooring field.
As a further accommodation to the Cruise participants, the Essex YC launch service would continue beyond its 9pm normal end if our Kick‐Off Dinner runs later. • ffff

If you only have a day, you must walk Main Street and see the following:

Connecticut River Museum (67 Main Street, (860) 767‐8269), a showcase of regional history. It has a great view of the harbor. There are exhibits on shipbuilding, animal life and geology of the Connecticut River Valley, as well as a full size replica of Turtle, the first submarine invented in 1776.
The Griswold Inn (36 Main Street, (860) 767‐1776). The Griz has been in continuous operation since 1776 and has a large collection of Currier and Ives maritime prints, and other nautical art. It has a newly redesigned VERY nice wine bar.

Take a trip on the Essex Steam Train and Riverboat (800) 377‐3987, where you can enjoy dinner and a scenic ride along the river valley.
Ten miles further up the river (or a 15‐minute taxi ride) on its east bank in East Saddam is the Goodspeed Opera House (goodspeed.org or (800) 873‐8668). On the weekend when we will be there the performance will be Bye Bye Birdie. There are slips on the river across from the theater.
Hamburg Cove, a half mile upriver from Essex, a pristine fresh water anchorage with the natural beauty of cardinal flowers and wild rice grasses.

Kick-Off Dinner
The Kick‐Off Dinner will be at the Essex Yacht Club in the Wetmore room. We will be the only party in this recent addition to the club. Weather permitting, the event could take place outside on the adjacent patio. Dress code is Riverside ‘smart casual’ (No jeans or hats). Cocktails (cash bar) and hors d’oeuvres will be at 6pm followed by buffet dinner at 7pm. EYC launch service will remain operating until after our dinner.

On July 31, 1789 Sag Harbor was declared the first official port on entering the United States. This turned Sag Harbor into a melting pot of different cultures. With Sag Harbor being the first stop on entering United States territory, this is where ships would stop before sailing to New York City to finish their trip.

From Essex, the most direct route is from the mouth of the Connecticut River SE through Plum Gut at the end of the North Fork of Long Island, and then on south to Sag Harbor. Sailing vessels will want to leave Essex early on Tuesday morning. High tide is at 5:23am in Essex, so leaving should be easy. Do note, though, that low tide at Plum Gut is at 9:42am, High at 3:54pm.

Sag Harbor Whaling Museum (631) 725‐0770. Enter through massive whale jaws over the main door to view a collection of whaling memorabilia.
The Customs House (631) 725‐0250. On the corner of Main and Garden Street was one of New York‘s first ports of entry in 1789. Visit the home of the first Customs Master, Henry Packer Dering.

Three Mile Harbor is conveniently located between Sag Harbor and Amagansett. This beautiful Harbor is East Hampton's most popular port with access to marinas, anchorage, restaurants, groceries and more. You will find the harbor is well protected and offers a beautiful natural anchorage.

Approach to Three Mile Harbor
•
If you are approaching Three Mile Harbor from the east you will need to be cautious when passing Hog Creek Point. You should remain a quarter to half a mile off shore to avoid hitting any rocks. Lionhead rock is located just north of the point and lies just beneath the surface during low tide. There are also several other large rocks off the eastern side of Hog Creek Point.

As you can see from the chart on the right, the waters outside Three Mile Harbor are very open and deep. As you approach the channel, the depth drops off significantly outside the channel.
There is a Red and White mid channel marker approximately half a mile from the entrance to harbor indicating the channel. Outside the channel near the beaches, the water is approximately 4‐5 ft
deep. There is a public beach and jetty located on the eastern side of the channel. There is enough depth on the western side for some boats to anchor,
but it may be very rough with all the traffic from
local boats.

Approach to Three Mile Harbor

To access the anchorage you will have to follow the channel deep into the anchorage. There is a large sandbar along the western side of the channel. The sandbar begins approximately half a mile inside the entrance. You will not be able to pass over this sandbar. At the northern point of the sandbar the depth is only a few inches at low tide. In order to access the anchorage area you will need to pass the red "22" marker prior to turning into the western section of the harbor.
There are three major areas of concern inside or around Three Mile Harbor:
– Rocks off Hog Creek Point
– Sandbar along western side of interior channel:
– Rocks along eastern shoreline inside Three Mile Harbor: There are several rock clusters just outside the channel inside the harbor. As long as your vessel remains well within the channel, you should not have any problems. For illustration purpose only.

The first European colonists established a trading house in the Pawcatuck section of town in 1649. The present territory of Stonington was part of lands that had belonged to the Pequot people, who referred to the areas making up Stonington as Pawcatuck and Mistack. It was named "Souther Towne" or Southerton by Massachusetts in 1658, and officially became part of Connecticut in 1662 when Connecticut received its royal charter. 29

Some RYC vessels will be at Stonington Harbor Yacht Club, the very first place seen on the right upon entering the harbor, and some will be at Dodson’s Boatyard, further in at the end of the harbor before the road bridge. Dodson’s will be running a launch to bring its guests down to Stonington Harbor YC.
There are very few dock spaces at Stonington Harbor YC, reservations can be made on a first come, first served basis by calling (860) 535‐0112. Alternatively, you can make dock/mooring reservations at Dodson's Boat Yard by calling (860) 535‐1507. Their launch service goes until 10pm. Chart is for illustration purpose only.

The Old Lighthouse Museum, 7 Water Street (860) 535‐1440. The Stonington Historical Society owns the lighthouse and uses it for marine art and rotating exhibits.
The Capt. Nathaniel B. Palmer House (40 Palmer Street) is also open to the public and honors the life of the man who was a ships master at age 19 and sailed as far as Antarctica on a 47 foot boat.
