Short History of
Meagher County
Our area is full of rich history …
HOME OF THE
HORNETS
The first county seat for Meagher was
Diamond City in 1870, the main city of the
Confederate Gulch Mining District. You
can find remains of other ghost towns near
White Sulphur Springs like Copperopolis,
Lingshire, and Castle Town.
White Sulphur Springs has been the
county seat for Meagher County since
1879. White Sulphur Springs has the
most centrally located population for the
county, the entire county’s population is
just over 1,900. This also includes the
communities of Martinsdale, Checkerboard, Lennep
and Ringling.
Meagher County was named for Thomas Francis
Meagher, territorial
governor of Montana.
Charles M. Bair came to Montana in 1883. He
worked as a conductor on the Northern Pacific
Railroad and went into the ranching business in
1891. He made his
fortune in the Alaska
gold rush and went
on to invest in
banking, mining, oil
and real estate. Bair
was one of the most
successful sheep
ranchers in the world, at one time running over
300,000 head. The new state-of-the-art museum
which sits adjacent to the Charles M. Bair family
home in Martinsdale is shown here.

Some of these activities are as

fundraising, decorating floats,
field trips, and real life
applicable class projects like this
one!
“One of the big advantages is that you have a
smaller class and you can go to your teacher to
ask for help way easier than you can in a bigger
school.”
~Meghan Tome, Class of 2016

“At a mile high in elevation, and nestled
between the Little Belt Mountains,
Castle Mountains, Big Belt Mountains,
and the beautiful Smith River, lives a
quiet little Montana agricultural
community called White Sulphur

beaten path.” ~ Todd Klassy

Drama, Ski Club, Yearbook, and Pep Band.
Having so many different options to choose
from students get exposed to many different
clubs and teams so they can decide which one is
for them. Kids also have
opportunities outside of
school to be involved with
youth groups and 4-H, just to
name a few.
