Short History of Meagher County Our area is full of rich history … HOME OF THE HORNETS The first county seat for Meagher was Diamond City in 1870, the main city of the Confederate Gulch Mining District. You can find remains of other ghost towns near White Sulphur Springs like Copperopolis, Lingshire, and Castle Town. White Sulphur Springs has been the county seat for Meagher County since 1879. White Sulphur Springs has the most centrally located population for the county, the entire county’s population is just over 1,900. This also includes the communities of Martinsdale, Checkerboard, Lennep and Ringling. Meagher County was named for Thomas Francis Meagher, territorial governor of Montana. Charles M. Bair came to Montana in 1883. He worked as a conductor on the Northern Pacific Railroad and went into the ranching business in 1891. He made his fortune in the Alaska gold rush and went on to invest in banking, mining, oil and real estate. Bair was one of the most successful sheep ranchers in the world, at one time running over 300,000 head. The new state-of-the-art museum which sits adjacent to the Charles M. Bair family home in Martinsdale is shown here.
