While medical science enables our physicians to heal our patients’ bodies, we never forget that our patients also have minds and spirits that need to be nurtured and renewed — not unlike the way you may tend your garden — in order to regain balance and joy in life. Tanner’s cancer patients and their families and friends experienced our body, mind and spirit approach to health care during two events held during the last few months: the second annual Celebration of Life for cancer survivors and the Tanner Medical Foundation’s first annual Choirs for Cancer concert, which raised funds to help area residents receive the cancer care they need. Those who attended Choirs for Cancer in November vividly remember the emotional and healing concert that so many in our community talked about for months. For this issue, we interviewed two of the concert performers — award-winning gospel singer/songwriter Babbie Mason and Thomas Dorsey Birthplace Choir member Shirley Marchman. Both women live in our community and have been Tanner patients. We think you’re going to be inspired by what they have to say; the article starts on page 6. On pages 4 and 5, we encourage you to familiarize yourself with several new physicians at Tanner, as well as the new Pre-Surgical Care Center (PSCC) in Carrollton, located at 710 Dixie Street, across from the hospital. On page 10, you’ll learn about the success of the 21st annual Magnolia Ball, held on April 30 at the Richards family estate in Carrollton. The money raised during this Tanner Medical Foundation event will help fund the current expansion of the Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton emergency department, doubling its emergency treatment capacity. The expansion also will add four new operating suites to the hospital’s surgical services unit, allowing the facility to provide care for an additional 4,000 patients a year in suites outfitted with state-of-theart, integrated technologies. During this expansion, which will be ongoing through 2013, we encourage Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton visitors to check www.tanner.org for the latest information on how construction is impacting traffic flow around the campus. Loy M. Howard President and CEO Currently, the Tanner Health System Clinic Avenue/Short Stay entrance and parking lot are closed, and emergency department parking has relocated to the first floor of the Clinic Avenue parking deck. As a courtesy to our patients and visitors, Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton is providing free valet service at the Dixie Street atrium and at the emergency department entrance. Both parking decks are also open for free, selfserve parking. Due to construction, changes have also been necessary inside the hospital. Registration services — including those for the hospital’s laboratory, diagnostic imaging (including ultrasound, CT, X-ray and MRI) and cardiopulmonary departments — have been moved to the first floor of the hospital on the Dixie Street side of the facility. Patient Financial Services and the Lamplighter Gift Shop also have relocated to the first floor. Please enjoy this issue of Healthy Living. We thank you for your continued support of Tanner Health System. Sincerely, Loy M. Howard President and CEO Tanner Health System Table of Contents Tanner Medical Center, Inc. A 48-year study of 120,321 people found almostdaily consumption of green and yellow vegetables reduced the risk for death from stroke by 26 percent in both men and women, compared with those who ate no vegetables more than once a week. Almost-daily fruit intake reduced the risk by 35 percent in men and 25 percent in women. Sunscreen Can Protect Your Skin With about a million new cases reported annually, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer. Sunscreen extends the length of time you can be outside before your skin begins to redden. You can judge the protectiveness of a sunscreen by its sun-protection factor (SPF) — the higher the number, the more protection. A Good Reason to Grow Organic Do you use fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides when you garden? Recent studies have pointed to a possible link between these chemicals and diseases such as non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and Parkinson’s disease. Experts are calling for more research, but the home gardener should play it safe. Make the most of the season’s bounty of fresh vegetables with our free online recipes. Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton patients preparing for a surgical services procedure (pre-op) or receiving chemotherapy treatments at the infusion center now do so in a new location — the Pre-Surgical Care Center, or PSCC, located at 710 Dixie Street, across the street from the hospital. G (continued on next page) Spring/Summer 2011 i www.tanner.org Bowdon resident and renowned gospel singer Babbie Mason (left) and Villa Rica city council member Shirley Marchman (right) harmonize together in Mason’s home. Both women find strength in music, faith and community. ospel great Babbie Mason and Villa Rica native Shirley Marchman are both confident, strong, beautiful women who share a love of gospel music, a deep faith in God, a desire to help and inspire others, and personal experiences with cancer. The two women met briefly at Tanner Medical Foundation’s first Choirs for Cancer concert in November 2010. At the time, they didn’t know how much they had in common. When the two sat down recently to chat over cups of steaming coffee at Mason’s home in Bowdon, it soon became clear that, in addition to similar interests, they both have a lot to say about cancer, health care and Tanner. Marchman is well-known in Villa Rica, where she serves on the city council and is a member of Mt. Prospect Baptist Church and the Thomas Dorsey Birthplace Choir, which performed at Choirs for Cancer. In a voice husky with emotion, Marchman tells Mason that on the day of the concert she received news that a recent breast biopsy was positive for cancer. Mason is a recent inductee into the Christian Music Hall of Fame, an awardwinning gospel singer/songwriter and a speaker who teaches songwriting at Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn. She is surprised to learn that such life-changing news had been given to a participating choir member just hours before the Choirs for Cancer concert. “You mean that very day?” she asks Marchman, who nods in affirmation. “I had to do a biopsy on the right side four or five years ago, and it was benign. So this time when I had to come back for a biopsy just before the concert, it didn’t bother me at first because I had gone through it before,” says Marchman. “The day of the concert was the day that they called me and told me that it was cancerous.” It never occurred to Marchman not to sing in the concert with her choir. “If you’re going to worry, don’t pray; if you’re going to pray, don’t worry,” says Marchman. “It was a personal night. We have two members of the Thomas Dorsey Birthplace Choir fighting cancer, plus the choir director’s mother is a cancer survivor. I said, ‘We’re going to be there; we’re going to do this.’” 7 (Continued from previous page) You Can Help Support Cancer Patients 8 Spring/Summer 2011 i www.tanner.org Due to the difficult economy, more cancer patients seeking treatment at Tanner’s Roy Richards, Sr. Cancer Center do not have the resources to pay for necessary medication and cancer-fighting treatments. To make a contribution to assist these patients or to support the second annual Choirs for Cancer event on Nov. 17, 2011, visit www.tannermedicalfoundation.org or call 770.836.9871. To learn more about Babbie Mason and her music, visit www.babbie.com. To stream live episodes of “Babbie’s House,” Mason’s talk show on marriage, family, teenagers, health, music and women’s issues in conjunction with the Christian faith, which airs Mondays at noon on WATC-TV in Atlanta, visit www.watc.tv. If you’re interested in joining or learning more about the Thomas Dorsey Birthplace Choir, visit www.mtprospectbaptist.org. Babbie Mason’s performance during Choirs for Cancer included two award-winning songs that she penned. Mason is in awe of the moxie Marchman showed in deciding to sing that night. Following her cancer diagnosis on the day of the concert, Marchman returned to the office of Raul Zunzunegui, MD, FACS, with the Comprehensive Breast Care Center in Carrollton, a Tanner Medical Group practice. Dr. Zunzunegui explained that her cancer was about the size of a pea and hadn’t spread to the lymph nodes. It had been caught relatively early because Marchman gets an annual mammogram. Marchman is doing well following MammoSite RTS® treatment, which works by delivering radiation from inside the lumpectomy cavity (the space left after the tumor is removed) to the surrounding tissue, where cancer is most likely to recur. Radiation therapy with MammoSite RTS can be completed in just five days with two treatments per day, allowing patients to get back to their lives faster. Mason has had her own cancer fears to conquer. “About three years ago, my oldest brother was diagnosed with prostate cancer. My family lives in Michigan, and here I am in Georgia, far away from my loved ones,” says Mason. “The first thing I thought was that this is the first time, to my knowledge, that cancer has ever struck a member of my immediate family. This is unbelievable. “I grew up in a generation where if you were diagnosed with cancer, the possibility was great that cancer would win. But through my brother’s experience with cancer, I found that I was more likely to be fearful if I remained uninformed. So I stayed in close contact with my family and learned about the options that were available,” Mason continues. “Armed with knowledge, prayer and a whole lot of faith in God, we were able to get through it. The ‘Big C’ is not so big that it consumes you.” Mason’s brother is now cancer-free. Her brother-in-law was not as fortunate in his battle with cancer; he died of stomach cancer 12 years ago. Both of those experiences were part of what convinced Mason to participate in Choirs for Cancer. “In my estimation, Choirs for Cancer is a powerful event. I’ve never been a part of anything like it. Never. That night, when those affected by cancer were asked to stand, almost the whole room was standing by the end of the exercise,” says Mason. “In a very powerful way, it was a form of validation, a point of recognition. It was recognizing and honoring those who fought or lost their lives to cancer and their families who are still here, saying ‘your loved one is not forgotten.’ And even though we didn’t know their names, that moment honored their lives.” Mason sings a line from “How Great Is Our God,” and Marchman immediately harmonizes, giving the impression that a private concert is only a few seconds away. Mason is emotional and passionate Award-winning gospel singer/songwriter Babbie Mason sings in her home recording studio. there. For an entire week the hospital room was home away from home. But it wasn’t at all like we were in the way. Even the people who brought the meals cared in a way that really ministered to us. I started keeping a mental note because it seemed that everyone asked as they left my husband’s room, ‘Can I get you anything else?’ These acts of kindness went a long, long way.” Marchman immediately agrees: “It’s like you said, they are there to be of service, and they’re doing it most of the time above and beyond. After my surgery, I sent a letter to [Tanner President and CEO] Mr. Loy Howard to show my appreciation. So many [employees] really care and are there to be of service rather than just being there to get a paycheck.” “You sense that. They are doing their job, but it becomes apparent that as they are doing their job, they really do care,” adds Mason. “I think Tanner recognizes that healing is more than just medicine. Healing includes the mind, body and spirit. Tanner is concerned about the whole person. The liberal way the Tanner staff serves, along with quality care, makes a world of difference when it comes to the healing process. You can tell Tanner even cares about things like the decor of the hospital; the color schemes, the artwork and furnishings all contribute to the way a person feels in such a positive way.” Mason also mentions Tanner’s recent billboard campaign, which featured photos of area residents such as cancer survivor the Rev. Joe Neal of Carrollton. “As I drove down the bypass to go to the bank or the beauty supply store, I saw this handsome man’s smiling face on the Tanner billboard,” says Mason, referring to Neal. “That face was not the face of a doctor or nurse. That was the face of a patient who was the recipient of care from Tanner. That says so much about how Tanner celebrates people. Everyone has a story. And when you can say that the people at the hospital know me and acknowledge my story, that’s huge.” Marchman agrees, but hopes women in the community won’t become familiar with Tanner because of an illness like breast cancer. In fact, it’s become her new mission. “I do announcements in our church, and I say, ladies, please get your mammograms! Four or five have told me they plan to get one, but just haven’t because they’re afraid it hurts. I said, well, better to hurt for a little while than to go through something that could have been prevented earlier. “And if you can’t afford a mammogram, Tanner Medical Foundation’s mammogram assistance fund will pay for it. That’s going to help save somebody. You get people’s attention with music, then you can speak to them about cancer and wellness,” says Marchman, smiling. “You know, Babbie is famous. If you’re going to have Babbie Mason there, people will just have to come to hear this melodious voice that she has.” Spring/Summer 2011 i www.tanner.org as she continues to describe how Choirs for Cancer affected her. It is why she has already agreed to participate in the second annual Choirs for Cancer concert on Nov. 17, 2011. “If we don’t look cancer in the face, it will always intimidate us. On that stage, in that room, there was a band of people — a community — standing together and saying to cancer, ‘You will not win. We have the last say. We are bigger than you and we are conquering you. We may not win every battle, but we will win this war.’ You know the old phrase that says there’s strength in numbers? That night we demonstrated that there’s strength in numbers, and Tanner is standing together with the community,” says Mason. “Even before one word was spoken, you could sense that something big was in that room, and it was not cancer. It was encouragement. It was strength. It was power. It was confidence. You could just see the excitement from the audience,” she adds. “That night had purpose. And when I reflect upon that night, it gives me a great sense of strength and encouragement. That’s why I think it’s so important: because it makes the community bigger than cancer.” Mason’s personal experiences with Tanner haven’t involved cancer. Following an angiogram a few years ago, her husband, Charles, was found to need a stent, and he spent a couple days in Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton. Most recently, after a stroke, he was a patient at Tanner Medical Center/Villa Rica, where he saw Onaje Greene, MD, FACC, FASNC, of Tanner Heart & Vascular Specialists, a Tanner Medical Group practice. “When my husband was in intensive care, the entire Tanner staff was so sensitive to our needs. The doctors, nurses, technicians and those who took care of my husband are all angels,” says Mason. “I basically had to camp out there at Tanner, eating there and even sleeping 9 2011 Magn 21st Anniversary Magnolia Ball raises The 21st annual Magnolia Ball, “The Bees Knees Bash,” was held on April 30 on the Richards family estate in Carrollton. It began with nickels, dimes and quarters collected to build west Georgia’s first hospital. Over the 60 years since, we’ve saved hundreds of hearts, delivered thousands of babies and been there for tens of thousands of people, providing cancer care, surgical care, emergency care and more. But none of those services would be here without you. Without those services, there’s a good chance many of our neighbors, friends and loved ones wouldn’t be here, either. That’s what makes your support so important. And that’s the reason… ...we’re here. 770.214.CARE | www.tanner.org Generic_HealthyLiving_BackPage.indd 10249M 1 Tanner Memorial Hospital, 1949 5/10/11 5:14 PM
