Day
Columbus lived about 500 years ago in a city called Genoa. At that time
people did not know the world was round. Many people thought it might be
flat.
Many people believed that if a ship sailed to the edge it would fall off the
Earth and be lost forever.
When Christopher Columbus was a little boy he dreamed of going to sea. He wanted to sail
to far away places. Christopher’s father was a weaver. He made cloth on looms.

Christopher helped his father in the shop. He would hurry down to the harbor after he
finished his work. He wanted to watch the sailors and the ship builders.

As Columbus grew older he would listen to the sailors talk about
sailing. Columbus would watch the mapmakers make their maps.

Many of the sea captains believed the world was round. Columbus read and
studied about the sea. Columbus began to believe the world was round.
When Columbus was a teenager he asked a sea captain if he could work on his
ship. The captain said he could. This made Columbus very happy.
He worked hard on the ship. He watched the sun and the stars. He learned how to make
maps, charts, and he learned how to use a compass.
Draw a picture of a compass.

A few years later Columbus became captain of a ship. He saw many
different cities. He sailed great oceans.
