Carolyn and I are planning to get some “away time” on the boat during the first week of July (off on Vacation). With most of our work complete on the boat we are hoping to get some relaxing time in the south end of Puget Sound. We are also looking forward to getting with some of the great CYCT boating folk out there for the 4th. We would like to take this opportunity to will all of you a happy (and safe) independence holiday this month. Hope to see you on the water Rob Crone Mainsheet editor s/v Honey Dew T-37PH Happy Birthday to our CYCT Members Linda BLAIR July 13 Cha CHIEH July 15 Dan BESSMER July 16 Tom O'HARA July 20 Gary BALLENTINE July 23 Kelsey QUEEN July 23 Randy CLARK July 28 Christine NELSON July 31 Page 3 July 2012 Commodore’s Comments Greetings CYCT Members! Is it sunny yet? NO!!!! When will this summer ever start?? I do believe the forecast is good for July 4th, just in time for a day on the water enjoying the Freedom Fair Airshow. I am ready!! The past two months have been so much fun for the group of women who have joined Dana and me for lessons on Radiant. A HUGE thank you goes out to Dana for taking us out on her boat each week. So as to not break the code of “What happens on the Red Boat stays on the Red Boat”, I will not go into every detail of the highlights of the lessons, but I will share that our ladies are tremendous sailors!! We learned about sail trim, adjustments to be made for both speed and for depowering when the wind is up. We learned a lot about flying a spinnaker, something that MOST of the ladies had never done. We learned about how to read the weather and how to sail into the eye of the storm, safely. We learned about boat traffic and some of the rules of the road. We learned about both traditional and non-traditional boat terms and their origins. In all, this was a bonding experience, where we became better friends. We provided life coaching, bereavement counseling and cancer support. Most of all, we started something. Something that will hopefully continue!! Great job, ladies! As a side note, our Board Meetings will be changing for the remainder of this year, from Monday’s to Tuesdays. My work schedule will not allow me to be at Monday evening meetings. The July Board Meeting will be at the Ballentine’s home at 7:00. The following months’ locations are to be determined. Thank you, Joy and Gary, for hosting this! Have a GREAT 4th of July, be safe!!! Cheryl White Commodore Page 4 July 2012 Vice Commodore’s Comments Fifth rainiest June in history!!! Well as long as we have been writing it down. Let’s pack up our bags and get the heck out of here. Our choices….. Massive heat waves with half of the lower U.S. needing federal assistance. Hurricanes with torrential rain storms and high winds, Fires consuming over 350 homes in the mid-west. Maybe we should all stick it out and see what July brings us. They say Summer starts on July 5th in the Pacific Northwest, hang in there. June brought us our Father’s Day Cruise to Des Moines Marina. Thanks to our new member Matt Thomas for sponsoring it. Although there were only five boats, there was a nice influx of land cruisers. As always the food was great with more than could be consumed. The prize giveaway had a bit of a twist to it. Borrowed from the Christmas white elephant exchange, we were able to steal prizes from other players or open a new one. Now I know it sounds mean, but it was really fun stealing a tee shirt Paul Case had possession of. I could tell he really liked it. Knowing he didn’t have a pick after me, I stole it….. It was fun. I did return it to him last Wednesday before the race. Just messin’ with you Paul. Paul told me the reason he liked it is because it was red. So if you see Paul waving a red tee shirt and yelling at you on race day, he is protesting something. Speaking of race day, how about last Wednesday. Nothing like sailing forward at 1.5 knots, and drifting backwards in the current at 4 knots. Boy that was fun. Joe Salz crewed with us that night and couldn’t wait to get home and tell Peggy how exciting it was. Joy was on the Red boat racing with the Gybe ho’s gang. Apparently there is a common language used among the racers when the wind is zero to nothing. Sailing words that pretty much describe the situation you are in. Words like #^%$#@ and *@#%$(:. It is nice to know were not the only ones asking for forgiveness after a drift fest. Speaking of the Gybe ho’s gang, I know what happens on the Red boat stays on the Red boat. However you will have to ask one of them about their awards ceremony. Some pretty interesting awards were handed out A special thanks to Gene Brown and Mystic for holding spinnaker classes this month. I missed the first one but made the last three. Here is what I learned. Week one: Don’t bring beer to a wine and cheese party. Week two: Don’t bring only one bottle of wine to a wine and cheese party. Got it right week 3, two bottles perfect. I also learned what many of you know all too well, but was a mystery to me. How to fly a spinnaker. I now have a clue, and oddly enough as soon as I’m done writing this article, it is off to Tatoosh to give it a shot. It will be the first time the spinnaker has seen day light in the 14 or so years we have had the boat. Steve Hucke has agreed to be our instructor for the day, wish us luck. I hope everyone has a great July. I know some of us are planning to spend some time on the water the next couple of months. We are doing South Sound next week, and the San Juans next month. I hope we all need some sun screen, and have wind somewhere besides on our nose. Have fun…. See You All Soon, Gary Ballentine S/V Tatoosh Vice Commodore, CYCT Page 5 July 2012 Rear Commodore’s Comments Summer is upon us, and with it, those no-wind Wednesday nights! Those that have the lightweight boats have made a good showing, but us with tonnage have had to struggle L. Congrats to Billy and crew for trying to make lemonade out of lemons! One thing worth mentioning was Billy’s comment to the Windseeker fleet about those who have failed to give way to the leeward boat. We all need to be familiar with the racing rules of sailing, and to introduce our novice racers as well. I would encourage everyone to be knowledgeable and respectful of the rules of racing, so that we can keep the most popular sailing activity of South Sound “Fun, Fair and Friendly, and avoid any accidents or collisions! Carve those waves! Steve Ryan Rear Commodore sv. OBSESSION Page 6 July 2012 Kokomo - Bocas del Toro, Panama June brought a few new twists for Kokomo, after 7 months in the San Blas, we have moved to Bocas del Toro. On are way we stopped in Portobelo and left our boat, of what was to suppose to be 2 nights, turned into 5. We met Larry and Vicky on S/V Rocinante in Panama City and went threw the canal with them and their friend Joe. While I remember meeting Larry in El Salvador, Dan Besmer remembers meeting S/V Rocinante in Oakland when we brought Jim and Connie’s boat down the coast in 2010 (Same boat Dan). After the canal we spent 5 days in Colon as S/V Rocinante needed some work. When we returned to Kokomo after a week, we found her right where we left her happy to have us back. After all, a boat left alone is lonely. We took a week to sail to Bocas del Toro with our friends Larry & Vickie on S/V Rocinante and Joe. We enjoyed snorkeling and exploring along the way. We ate dinner together and/or cocktails every night. We were referred to a good mechanic in Bocas named Jeff and decided to have him look at our engine to see if the magic wand could be waved to solve our problems. No such luck. Jeff thought we should go to a boat yard and have a new engine put in or have the old one rebuilt. I asked Jeff if he could do it and if he was up for the task. He said yes. He has a great attitude and is very knowledgeable, so we bought an engine in Panama and had it shipped to Bocas, by panga. Then I went about the process of taking the old engine out. Bocas is an x-pat community without a boat yard. The town is mostly dive charters and gringo restaurants with a few marinas and Americans hiding from the law or responsibility. As I write this, we are tied to a dock in a marina, the old engine has been taken away and the new engine is sitting in a panga waiting for us to install it. From the cockpit of Kokomo I can see the marina bar serving drinks to the regulars as they listen to a different guitar guy playing the same music as last nights “Jimmy Buffet want to be”. This repeats itself every night. We will spend most of July here, then we will start heading east (yes east, check the globe) to Columbia before returning to our favorite place – the San Blas Islands. Read the blog to see photos and video on our engine project and what else Bocas del Toro has to offer. Life is good on Kokomo! For fun, I thought I would survey the members at our last meeting and learn what the names of our boats mean. Here is what I learned: Special Purpose, Steve Wagner: My boat was purchased in 1980, the year of Steve Martin’s first cinematic product “The Jerk”. I was inspired by this theatrical overture to name my boat after one of the most memorable lines from this movie, used twice! Once in letter home to family after hooking up with circus biker chick and later with Bernadette Peters in the beach scene! I am a man with a 30’ Special Purpose! French Kiss, Pat and Christine Nelson: This is the boat’s original name and when we bought it in LA we kept the name. The spinnaker with the lips usually gets a comment. The boat was built in France in 1985. Flim Flam, Fred Crietz: Bull Shit. Sleuth, Jerry Brennan: Hardy Boys boat name. We were reading Hardy Boys series when we bought the boat. Gardyloo, Eric Nelson: Gardyloo is Scottish for “Beware of the Water”. Definition: a call heard in midevil Edihburgh, Scotland, prior to buckets of daily waste being tossed out high rise apartment buildings into the street…before plumbing. Jeopardy, Ed and Susan Pinkham: I was pretty sure my J-109 was going to have a name starting with J. I actually took the dictionary and started looking through the J’s. I am a fan of the Jeopardy Quiz Program. It was an easy choice. I am looking for Alex Trebek for my bow, there may be copyright infringement. Salty Quacker, Ross and Barb Dremmel: We’re both from Eugene, OR, Met during High School in Eugene (Circa 1969). Barb attended U of O. Son in Business Degree Program at U of O. We are transplanted Oregonians who love living in the great northwest. Pelagos, Arthur and Audrey Vandervelde: Ancient Greek meaning; the sea, the high sea, the deep where ships sail. Tatoosh, Gary and Joy Ballentine: “Breast” in the Chinook jargon. Sound Spirit, Tom and Vaneva O’Hara: Can be looked at as meaning multiple things, sound mind, Puget Sound fun, good spirits and more… Discovery, Billy and Soo Carter: “In the wake of Cap’t George Vancouver” or while in the bilge, “What a discovery!” Lycian, Brock and Janice VanRavenswaay: People from Turkish Coast from 480 B.C – later were taken over by the Persians. Also, first Democratic Union known (basically the first democracy.) Obsession, Steve Ryan: Obsession was near death and I was determined not to let her sink! It took a real “obsession” to bring her back from the brink! Respite, Chris and Janet Wenderoth: Since I (Janet) am in health care, we realize the importance of a “respite” (vacation, or a break from everyday life) and fully take advantage of this, as everyone should! It is a must for mental and physical health. Honey Dew, Rob and Carolyn Crone: The name she gave us. Sirena Gorda, Ken and Julie St. John: “Fat Mermaid”, name of our favorite bar/restaurant in Zihuatanejo, Mexico, (and our boat is kinda fat). We think of her as volupious. Lucia, Paul and Linda Case: From the movie “The Ghost and Mrs. Muir”. Mrs. Muir falls in love with the ghost of a sea captain. The last line in the movie is, “Come, Lucia!” and the two go off together to live a life on the sea. Page 11 July 2012 Vivacite’, Peter Barbin: French word for liveliness, quickness, sharpness, nimbleness, joy and sparkle. Roksan, Marv Fritts: A shortened version of Roksanna. Roksanna is “Persian” for dawn; also the precursor of the Russian “Oksanna” and the French “Roxanne”. Raindrop, Joe and Peggy Salz: Small demure indicative of the Pacific Northwest weather. Arabesque, Lew and Bev Channing: Ballet term for twirl; also dizzy, nuts, crazy. GraceE, Brian and Cheryl White: When we were pregnant with Adam we didn’t know if we were having a boy or a girl. Our girl name was Grace. We had a boy. When we were pregnant with Ruthie, we didn’t know if we were having a boy or a girl. Our girl name again was Grace, until my best friend named her newborn Grace 6 weeks before Ruthie was born. So, we named her Ruth and didn’t have our Grace. When we bought the boat, she was already named GraceE. She was the third boat in the Lehman (previous owner) family of boats, Grace was the first, Grace2 was the second, then GraceE was the third. When we bought her, we finally had our Grace, so we kept the name. Thanks everyone! That was fun!! Cheryl Join us on a Safari Cruise Bremerton Marina - 4 hrs (down river both ways) leaving Brown's Point around 2 p.m. Friday July 27th, 28th, & 29th $5 Depost required for Slip We have over 20 boats already signed up for this cruise Please contact Karen Walker if you have any questions Saturday afternoon we will divide into teams of 4 to 6 each team will get a box of This should be interesting and fun to see what Safari dishes can be prepared by each group Page 12 July 2012 CYCT Cruising July Report The Father's Day Cruise on June 16-17 in Des Moines was a lot of fun. Thank you to all who came. By sea, there were five boats: The Ballentines in Tatoosh, the Andersons in Starlight, St. Johns in Sirena Gorda, the Thomases in Maria Cristina, and the Ahrens in Wild Oats. By land, the VanRavenswaays, Cases, Channings, and Whites came. Janice and Brock VanRavenswaay treated us all by bringing their new baby, Julia, for us all to admire. Later in evening, the fathers took turns swapping gifts during the gift exchange. Ken St. John (Sirena Gorda) entertained everyone playing beautiful music on the guitar. And, we had a special treat when a group of new graduates set aloft flaming lanterns from the end of the pier into the night sky and a wedding party used our boats as a back drop for their wedding photos. There was an unusual copper colored tide that spread throughout the east passage and into the marina. The marina manager thanked us on Sunday for keeping everything so clean. Saturday was calm and warm but we had a challenging sail home on Sunday with head winds gusting into the 20s and 30s. By: Matt Thomas (cruise co-sponsor) Stay tuned for the “Suefari” planned for July 28-29 in Bremerton. Please contact the Pinkhams, Walkers, or Channings for reserving a spot! The Membership chair will also advertise in the “48 North” Magazine our clubs activities and programs. We would like you to spread the word to your neighbors at the dock and hopefully we can increase the CYCT membership. Summer is here, thought the weather hasn’t been all that great yet. I participated in the woman sailing program and like to thank Cheryl and Dana for their time and knowledge. We learned a lot and have gained more confidence in handling our own boat. Therefore the woman sailing group decided to continue the Thursday evening event by taking turns on each others boat.
