And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” Romans 10:14-15 May this Kingdom Workers mission trip be the next step in a journey where your feet take you to a new place to meet new people and build new relationships to share the message of God’s love through his Son, Jesus. We pray that the mission trip that you will soon be going on isn’t just a one-time experience. Our hope is that this will lead to new opportunities for you to be involved in outreach in your own community. There are people in other countries and next door who don’t have the hope of eternal life in heaven. May God use us all as seed-planters of his message of salvation. God’s blessings as you prepare for your Kingdom Workers mission trip! Sincerely, Image Bill Meier Kingdom Workers Executive Director KINGDOM WORKERS VOLUNTEER HANDBOOK (REVISED APRIL 15) PAGE 3 MISSION STATEMENT, PURPOSE, VISION Mission Statement Kingdom Workers will proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ, using volunteers in mission fields, in partnership with ministries of our fellowship. Mission Purpose Kingdom Workers mission is to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with all people in a number of ways. Kingdom Workers works with individual members, ministries, congregations, and church bodies in doctrinal fellowship with the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod; in cooperation and collaboration with the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod mission divisions. Kingdom Workers also heightens awareness among individual members and congregations regarding mission and outreach ministry needs and opportunities. Another main task includes coordinating lay efforts and volunteer efforts in mission fields, as well as promoting and providing support for ministry projects in which Kingdom Workers is a partner. Vision In 2017 the name Kingdom Workers is synonymous with gospel-motivated global action. The community of people and organizations proud to be included under this moniker comprises donors, supporters, current and past volunteers, foundation representatives, *Confessional Evangelical Lutheran Conference (CELC) leaders – all of diverse ages, nationalities, backgrounds, experience, and gifts. Coming to Kingdom Workers due to its history of impactful, well-planned, and efficient mission programs, this team of people and organizations retains a closeness – enjoying the fellowship, spiritual growth, and change God has worked within their personal lives. As a result, Kingdom Workers is the leading organization for connecting people, ideas, and resources to mission fields and churches with expressed spiritual and physical needs. All this is done to the glory of God, compelled by the Great Commission. *CELC membership includes Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod & Evangelical Lutheran Synod. KINGDOM WORKERS VOLUNTEER HANDBOOK (REVISED APRIL 15) PAGE 4 KINGDOM WORKERS MINISTRIES Member ministry is the foundation for Kingdom Workers. Our focus is on equipping, strengthening, and utilizing Christians throughout the world to exercise their responsibility as the “royal priesthood” (1 Peter 2:9). Through our three ministries, we faithfully assist called workers, congregations, and Lutheran church bodies with empowering members to carry out their personal Christian ministry. Each ministry of Kingdom Workers plays a unique role. BUILDERS FOR CHRIST uses members skilled in construction to build houses of worship, schools, or other ministry structures for existing and new congregations. Your volunteer service helps reduce costs, provides places for believers to worship their Lord, enables children to grow in their faith, and encourages gospel proclamation. Builders For Christ volunteers leave an impact on the congregations they serve. They actively participate in community outreach and evangelism. They also bring a culture of service to the congregation. FAITH IN ACTION Each year, mission-minded Christians assist ministries around the world. Opportunities for families, teens, college students, mid-career professionals and retirees open doors to actively serve as disciples of Christ and build relationships that will last into eternity. Kingdom Workers volunteers help with a variety of mission projects identified by local congregations and ministries throughout the United States and around the world. These projects can include canvassing, vacation Bible school, sports Bible camps, teaching English as a Foreign Language, evangelism assistance and more! There are opportunities to serve from one week to one year. Locations include the United States, Canada, Malawi, Chile, Grenada, Zambia and the Apache Lutheran Mission. LUTHERAN HEALTH ALLIANCE engages health professionals who serve alongside national and community-based health workers to address common health issues. Projects are focused on improving health, developing crosscultural learning, and sharing the gospel message. Christians compelled by the love of Christ, to show love and respect for individuals and families living in impoverished conditions by empowering through listening, learning, and serving with humility, compassion, and discernment. KINGDOM WORKERS VOLUNTEER HANDBOOK (REVISED APRIL 15) PAGE 14 EXAMPLES OF UNUSABLE PHOTOS A FEW EXAMPLES OF PHOTOS WE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO USE ON OUR SOCIAL MEDIA, WEBSITE OR OTHER PLACES. Kids are great, but how does this show mission work or proclaiming the gospel? Inevitably, many of our teams have the priviledge to work with children. Vacation Bible school programs are generally geared at young children. There is nothing wrong with capturing images of the kids playing and simply being kids for your personal files. We hope you remember the experience! UN E L B A S U However, this is an example of a picture that simply doesn’t display the impact of Kingdom Workers volunteers. Fun? Yes. Sharing the gospel? No. By all means, we want you to have fun, but this is a mission trip. Kingdom Workers sincerely hopes that you will enjoy the trip, make new friends, and see new places. In many cases, the host congregation will plan a day of sight seeing. That is a bonus and gift from the congregation. UN A S U E L B This is a fine photo, but ultimately, it’s not the reason we send people into the mission field. We are trying to tell the stories of how KW is making a difference in the lives of the people we meet. KINGDOM WORKERS VOLUNTEER HANDBOOK (REVISED APRIL 15) PAGE 15 EXAMPLES OF USABLE PHOTOS GOOD PHOTOS ARE VITAL TO TELLING STORIES ABOUT HOW KINGDOM WORKERS PROCLAIMS THE GOSPEL. Working together, sharing the gospel. One of the primary goals of Kingdom Workers is to engage the local congregation with our traveling volunteers to make as big of an impact as possible. Clear images of work being accomplished makes for good story telling. Quiet moments of reflection. Want to tell a memorable story? Use a memorable image. The best pictures will stick in your mind for a long time. If you had to describe this photo to someone without showing it, you’d be able to. KINGDOM WORKERS VOLUNTEER HANDBOOK (REVISED APRIL 15) PAGE 16 EXAMPLES OF USABLE PHOTOS GOOD PHOTOS ARE VITAL TO TELLING STORIES ABOUT HOW KINGDOM WORKERS PROCLAIMS THE GOSPEL. Display the setting. Not every person is blessed with a big, beautiful church building in which to worship in. Kingdom Workers is priviliedged to be able to work with people from many nations, economic classes and races. The teacher is engaging the students, outside, under a tree. Proclaiming the gospel is important. At a quick glance, this is a simple photo of our volunteer reading a story to some kids. Look a little closer and you’ll see that it’s a book about Jesus and the children are glued to it. Your volunteer work is helping to share the gospel throughout the world. It’s important work. Help us talk about it. KINGDOM WORKERS VOLUNTEER HANDBOOK (REVISED APRIL 15) PAGE 17 WRITING GUIDELINES TIPS AND TRICKS TO WRITING IN A WAY THAT SUPPORTS THE MINISTRY OF KINGDOM WORKERS It’s OK to be spiritual in your writing. It’s a mission trip. You are spreading the gospel and acting directly as God’s hands and feet. In all of your writing, consider these questions: 1) How is my work helping to spread the gospel? 2) What is the impact (short term or long term) this project is having on the community I’m working in? 3) How have I, as a Christian individual, grown through this experience? 4) What is unique about this opportunity to proclaim the gospel? 5) Is there an interesting story about an individual which displays the impact of Kingdom Workers? You may not be able to answer all of the questions in every article you write, but these are a place to start from. Perhaps try to focus on two or three of them as you consider writing the blog entries. EXAMPLES OF USABLE ARTICLES THESE ARE ACTUAL ENTRIES WE RECEIVED FROM VOLUNTEERS It is truly a blessing that more kids got to join the program and hear about God’s Word while having a blast in other activities throughout the day. That was probably one of the most exciting things that came out of the soccer camp. The witnessing that was done by the St. Paul’s First Lutheran children to others was a success for the mission outreach in this area of Los Angeles. I was amazed to see God working through these children. The week definitely revived my enthusiasm for entering the teaching ministry in the near future. I can’t think of any job I’d rather do than sharing the Gospel message with kids almost every day. Notice the focus on God’s word and the way it moves and works in the lives of the people, the impact on the community and comtemplation of spiritual growth. The kids gathered for the final time and began by singing songs that would be performed in church on Sunday. At this point in the week, they were comfortable and overly excited to hear the great news of God’s love for us. Today, “Moses” presented the Ten Commandments and the children listened attentively. The “Israelites” were so thankful that they safely made it through the desert due to God’s promise that He will always provide for us. The tribes marched and chanted, “God guides us, so trust God!” For our craft, we made a banner with the children’s footprints on. The banners were used during the church service on Sunday. At the end of the week, we felt the Holy Spirit instilled a stronger faith in each of the participants and we were so honored to be a part of this. I admire Paul’s words in his second letter to Timothy, “As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.” This is a passage that encourages me personally and has helped me to understand ministry. Paul was telling Timothy to fully carry out his ministry. He is telling us the same thing. It’s important that we carry out duties that go along with the ministry. Sometimes those duties include simple activities to make friends so that the Word of God may be proclaimed later. KINGDOM WORKERS VOLUNTEER HANDBOOK (REVISED APRIL 15) PAGE 18 WRITING GUIDELINES TIPS AND TRICKS TO WRITING IN A MANNER THAT HELP KINGDOM WORKERS CONTINUE THE CONVERSATIONS EXAMPLES OF UNUSABLE ARTICLES THESE ARE ACTUAL ENTRIES WE RECIEVED FROM VOLUNTEERS Me and my partner have been doing various maintenance work for the church too, such as cleaning gutters, cutting grass/weeds; cleaning the church steeple etc. Aside from work, I’ve basically just been chillin’. All summer I watched the world cup whenever I could, but after USA and Mexico got sent home, I didn’t really care to watch games anymore, although I did watch the final between Germany and Argentina. LE B A S U N U Our host family, along with the members of the congregation, has been so generous and is treating us to several different kinds of foods. We have tried the local Mexican restaurant and Chick-Fil-A, as well as more worldwide cuisine, such as Thai, Mediterranean or Cajun. We even tried alligator, which was a new experience for us! The weather is very hot compared to the Midwest weather that we are both used to. However, we are finding it to be a good new experience and are finding ways to stay cool. LE B A S U N U UN E L B A S U As you prepare your photos and articles to submit to Kingdom Workers, please consider the first phrase of our Mission Statement. Kingdom Workers will proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ, using volunteers in mission fields, in partnership with ministries of our fellowship.
