Bill Morgan is in his first season as interim head
coach of the Connecticut women’s track and field
program, after serving as an assistant coach for the
past 22 years. Morgan is extensively involved in all
aspects of the track program’s administration. He
also specializes with coaching in the field events and
multi-events, for which he has gained a national reputation for excellence after guiding
numerous UConn athletes to national collegiate and Olympic Trials success.
During his tenure at Connecticut, Morgan has coached nine All-America performers to 16 All-American titles-most recently Deirdre Mullen in the Indoor High Jump.
Mullen’s selection highlighted a successful 2002-03 season in which she and Amy
Parkosewich were among those who captured ECAC, BIG EAST and New
England Championship titles under Morgan’s guidance. A year earlier, Morgan
coached two All-Americans in Mullen and Wadudah Nurul-Islam who achieved the
honor for the Indoor Weight Throw.
Morgan also coached Nicole Toney in the triple jump in 2001 and NCAA RunnerUp Tamika Toppin in the high jump. Prior to that, he coached Toppin in the high jump
in 1998 and 1999, Bethany Hart (1999 and 2000) and Wendy Berutto (1997) in the
hammer throw, long jumpers Carol Galloway (1985) and Cheryl Brantle (1992), threetime All-America heptathlete Terry Roy in 1992, 1993 and 1995, and high jumper
Ronna Deffer, an NCAA National Outdoor Championship finalist in 1992. In July of
2000, he accompanied Hart and Toppin to the U.S. Olympic Trials in Sacramento. The
duo were his fourth and fifth student-athletes to qualify for the trials. He also coached
Roy, Brantle and Berutto to the U.S. Olympic Trials in Atlanta in June, 1996, and Roy
to the 1992 trials in New Orleans.
Morgan has coached UConn jumpers, throwers, pentathletes and heptathletes to
an incredible 122 titles (20 ECAC championships, 59 New England titles and 43 BIG
EAST championships). Under Morgan’s direction, UConn jumpers have claimed 11
ECAC Championships, 29 New England Championships and 21 BIG EAST Championships; his pentathletes and heptathletes have captured four ECAC titles, 11 New
England Championships and three BIG EAST crowns; and the throwers have
accounted for five ECAC titles, 17 New England crowns and 18 BIG EAST championships.
Morgan was invited to the USA Track and Field Women’s Junior Elite Throws
Camp in San Diego this past summer with freshman Allison Booth, a nationallyranked discus thrower. Previously, Morgan participated in the USA Track and Field
Women’s Elite Heptathlon Summit in Tucson, Arizona, with All-American Roy.
Morgan presently resides in Storrs. He recently retired after 30 years of public
school teaching; 29 of those in the Columbia School District as a physical education
instructor. Horace W. Porter School was recognized as the only school in the state to
have received the Outstanding Achievement award on the Connecticut State Physical Fitness Assessment Mastery Test for an unprecedented six straight years. Morgan was an undefeated coach at Porter School for five years, going 51-0 in dual meet
competition. Among the many age-group athletes he has coached, Morgan developed
three national champions in the shot put, discus and pentathlon. Morgan received his
Bachelor of Science degree in health and physical education from Southern Connecticut State University in 1972 and received his master’s degree from SCSU in the
same field of study in 1973. In 1986, he received an advanced degree in sport
biomechanics from UConn.

core of veterans along with a talented
group of newcomers in order to bring
the program to a new level. Anchoring
the squad are seniors Deirdre Mullen
(Princeton, NJ) and Amy Parkosewich
(Bethlehem, CT). Mullen is a two-time
All-American in the high jump, while
Parkosewich is an ECAC Champion and
school record-holder in the discus who
will be looking to garner her first All-American honor this season. Also key to this
year’s squad will be a talented freshman
class who enters UConn ready to make

Sprints/Hurdles
With the loss of three key seniors
to graduation, the team will rely on junior
April Garner (Temple Hills, MD) for leadership in sprints and hurdles. Garner,
an ECAC finalist last season, will help fill
the void left by Sharmaine Abrams and
Antonia Cadore who provided the backbone in sprints and hurdles for the past

few seasons.
Garner consistently placed in the top four in the 55-meter hurdles
last year during the indoor season, running a career-best 8.06 seconds at the New England Championships to earn second place. Outdoors she qualified for NCAA Regional competition in the 100-meter
hurdles, and finished in fifth at the ECAC Championships with a careerbest time.
Senior Donalda Boiteux (West Haven, CT) returns as a member of the sprint team. Boiteux ran the 100 and 200-meter distances
last season, and will add depth to the squad in her final season with
UConn.
Senior Nicola Hines (Bridgeport, CT) returns as one of UConn’s
top athletes in the longer sprint and middle distance events. Hines
recorded five top-10 finishes last season, including a fourth-place finish
at the New England Championships. Sophomore Lucey, also aiding
the cross country squad, will be looked to contribute after a commendable freshman year.
Freshmen Danielle Lattimore (Easton, PA) and Jennifer
Rogers (Parksville, B.C.) are expected to make an immediate contribution in the sprint group. Lattimore will contribute in both the sprint and
long jump areas, while Rogers, an accomplished high school athlete in
the 400-meter, will add depth to the team in the horizontal jumps and
sprints.
Sophomore Erin Sales (Windsor Locks, CT) will contribute to
the group, along with freshmen Breyonne Golding (Hartford, CT),
Juliene Anderson (Bloomfield, CT) and Traver Garrity (Berlin, CT).
In the 400-meter hurdles, freshman Marlene Priest (South Dennis,
MA) is expected to vie for top honors.
Jumps
Deirdre Mullen has earned back-to-back All-America honors in
the high jump for the past two seasons, and will be looked to for leadership in a group that will include primarily newcomers this season. Mullen
is a 2004 Olympic Trials qualifier, and looks to have a strong season
leading up to that event. She won every meet she participated in last
season, with the exception of the NCAA Championships where she
earned All-America status, and the USA Track and Field Championships. Mullen claimed her second ECAC title and first BIG EAST title
with a career-best jump. She was also named the Northeast Region
Women’s Athlete of the Year at the NCAA Convention.
Also returning to the jumping group is junior Caitlyn Brady
(Englewood, CO), who placed in the top 10 in the triple jump seven
times last season during indoor competition, including a career-best
mark at the New England Championships to earn fourth place. Sophomore Francesca Kersenbrock (Lake Mary, FL) and freshmen
Lattimore, Rogers and Jennifer Croce (Bristol, CT) will score for the
squad.
Throws
Senior Amy Parkosewich (Bethlehem, CT) will lead what is
likely to be one of the strongest areas for UConn women’s track and
field this year. Parkosewich, a school record-holder in the discus,
earned first-place in the event at the ECAC Championships in the
2003-04 UCONN WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD/CROSS COUNTRY
2002-03 season, as well as numerous other accolades throughout the year. She
placed well in both the hammer throw and the discus at the BIG EAST Championships, coming in third and fourth, respectively.
Top recruit Daisy VanRavenswaay (Ontario, Canada) is expected to make
an immediate impact. VanRavenswaay is a Canadian junior champion in the
javelin, and earned numerous other honors in shot put and discus as well during
her high school career. Freshmen Allison Booth (Shelby, OH) and Cassie

Buckwalter (New Wilmington, PA) also join the squad ready to make an
impact. Booth is a four-time All-State honoree from Shelby High School who
is expected to shine in the discus and has outstanding potential in shot put
and hammer. Buckwalter is a three-time All-State and All-Conference honoree from Wilmington Area High School who is expected to develop into an
outstanding thrower during her career at Connecticut. The trio bring high
expectations as they begin their ascent on the collegiate level.
Pole Vault
Senior Michelle Beamon (Peabody, MA) will lead an improving group
of pole vaulters this season. Beamon finished in the top 10 in the event in six
meets last season indoors, including a seventh-place finish at the New
England Championship meet with a career-best vault of 3.40 meters (111.75). Outdoors, Beamon earned first and fifth-place finishes at UConn’s
home meets, and a 14th-place finish at the BIG EAST Championships.
Freshman Lisa Kachmarsky (Monroe, NY), a seven-time league allstar in high school, will push for the school record in the event. Also expected to contribute is sophomore Leah Williams (Brookfield, CT), senior
Karen Hasson (Mansfield Center, CT) and newcomer Heffernan.
Middle Distance/Distance
Senior McCabe looks to lead a strong contingent of runners in the
middle distance events. Last season, McCabe ran a career-best time of
2:53.58 in the 1000-meter in the preliminary round of the ECAC Championship meet, and also competed in the mile, recording a career-best time of
5:01.63 at the Armory Invitational. Outdoors, McCabe competed in the
1500-meter on three occasions, placing in the top seven each time.
Freshman MacQueen is expected to shine in the group, as her range
allows her to be effective from the 800-meter and up. In the longer distance
events, Meyer will continue to be dominant. Add classmate LaFrano, along
with cross country members Cunningham, Sullivan and Lepine, and the
pieces seem to be in place for a fine campaign in the middle distance and
distance events.
Multi-Events
Freshman Rachel Smith (Reading, MA) could develop into the team’s
heptathlete this season. After placing second among high school athletes in
Massachusetts in the event, Smith is expected to develop into a solid performer for the Huskies.

jump qualified Mullen for the USATF Nationals at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, MA. Other top finishes included Parkosewich’s second-place finish in
the weight throw and Gourdine’s fifth-place finish in the triple jump.
The Huskies performed better the following weekend at the New England Championships, as they claimed second place of 27 teams at Smith
College. Cadore took first in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.01 seconds and ran to a second-place finish in the 200-meter. The 4x200 meter relay team

Englands, as she was participating in the USATF Indoor Championships. She tied for sixth place at the competition with a height of 1.80 meters (5-10.75).
Cadore broke a 23-year old UConn record in the 60-meter dash at the ECAC Championship meet on March 9. Cadore earned a fourth-place
finish with a time of 7.59 seconds as she claimed the new record in the event, breaking Sheila McCabe’s record of 7.60 seconds from 1980. The Huskies

After being named the Northeast Region Women’s Track and Field Athlete of the Year, Mullen competed at the NCAA Championships at the
University of Arkansas. Mullen, Connecticut’s talented high-jumper, cleared a height of 1.72 meters (5-7.75) and finished 11th overall in the meet to be named

in the 100 meter (12.39 seconds) and 200 meter (24.72 seconds) dashes. Both the 4x100 (46.54 seconds) and 4x400 (3:53.38) relays teams finished
in front and Parkosewich had first place throws in both the discus (44.87m, 147-2.00) and the hammer (49.98m, 164-0.00).
UConn athletes took part in the Penn Relays the following weekend, and then returned home to Storrs for a second home meet. At the
University of Pennsylvania, Andrea Gourdine was the top individual competitor for the Huskies. She placed eighth in the triple jump with a distance of
12.01 meters (39-5.00). Parkosewich finished 11th and 13th in the hammer and discus throws, respectively, then returned to UConn campus to earn
a first place finish in both the hammer throw and shot put. Back in Storrs, Breanne Lucey and Kiley Margolis finished in first and second place in the
800-meter run with season-best times of 2:22.93 and 2:26.90, respectively. Caitlyn Brady and Gizelle Richards recorded season-best long jumps of
5.44 meters (17-10.25) and 5.38 meters (34-3.50) as they finished in first and second place.
The Huskies then competed at the BIG EAST Championship meet, hosted by UConn at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.
Connecticut finished in 11th place with 35 points. Cadore and Parkosewich earned third place finishes to lead the Huskies. In the 100 meter dash,
Cadore finished in 11.91 seconds. Parkosewich took third in the hammer throw with a distance of 53.94 meters (177-0.00) and tallied 11 of UConn’s
team points, as she also placed fourth in the discus throw.
Four athletes qualified to compete in the ECAC Championships held in Princeton, NJ. The Huskies finished in 17th place with 16 points.
Parkosewich led once again, grabbing the title in the discus throw and placing seventh in the hammer for 12 team points. Garner ran a season-best
13.92 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles for fifth place. Distance runner Meyer finished 10 th in the 5000-meter run with a time of 17:08.38 and Brady
had a personal-best triple jump of 11.93 meters (39-1.75) to place 11th.
Connecticut finished up the season at the NCAA East Regional meet in Fairfax, VA. The 4x100 meter relay team had the best finish of the
competition for the Huskies, placing 18th with a time of 47.54 seconds. Cadore competed in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Abrams, Garner and
Davis also took part in the regional competition.

SUPPORT STAFF
ACADEMIC SUPPORT
John Miceli
The University of Connecticut’s Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes (CPIA) was established in 1986 to provide comprehensive
academic support to all UConn student-athletes. CPIA’s staff includes a director, seven full time counselors, four graduate assistants, and a large
complement of tutors. The program boasts its own computerized writing lab with access to the internet as well as the reference tools of the Homer
Babbidge Library. The program also provides laptop computers for team use during travel to away games. Individual tutors in all subjects are readily
available to student-athletes upon their request.
A CPIA counselor is assigned to each intercollegiate team. He or she monitors student-athlete academic performance, counsels individuals
regarding major/career options, facilitates registration in courses that accommodate practice times while optimizing progress toward a degree,
coordinates tutor requests and assignments, and assists in development of study and time management skills. CPIA counselors also provide
individual referrals to other University support programs including Career Services, Counseling Services, and the University Program for the Learning
Disabled (UPLD). Finally, CPIA counselors work in connection with the student-athletes’ major advisors to ensure that each student-athlete makes
optimal progress toward his or her degree.
SPORTS MEDICINE
ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT
The Department of Sports Medicine in the University of Connecticut Division of Athletics works as an integrated
multidisciplinary team whose purpose is to provide the optimal, safe environment for the soccer student-athletes to train and
participate in their sport. The staff takes great pride in the individual attention paid to each student-athlete. They are devoted
to preventing injury, rapidly diagnosing and treating injury, and maximizing athletic performance. The disciplines of athletic
training, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, orthopaedic sports medicine, optometry, nutrition, exercise physiology,
and psychology work in concert to provide comprehensive care for the student-athlete.
Physician coverage is provided by Jeffrey Anderson, MD, the Director of Sports Medicine and Team Physician Thomas
Trojian, MD. The Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Specialists for the team include Edward Collins, MD, and Michael Joyce,
MD, of the Connecticut Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Willimantic, Barry Messinger, MD, of Sports Medicine
and Orthopaedic Surgery in Manchester, and Robert Arciero, MD, and Kevin Shea, MD, of the University of Connecticut
Health Center Department of Orthopaedics in Farmington.
The Department of Sports Medicine works intimately with the Departments of Kinesiology and Nutritional Sciences on
the University of Connecticut campus. This affords the student-athletes with the input of several nationally recognized
exercise scientists. This cooperation also keeps the sports medicine staff at the cutting edge of developments in the fields
of human performance and sports nutrition.

A HUSKY TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE
In the UConn Division of Athletics, there
is a saying: “If we’re not going to do it the
right way, we’re not going to do it at all.”
That’s the attitude when it comes to
anything that happens in the Division from
its administrators, coaches and studentathletes. There’s a tradition of excellence
at UConn that is fostered on a continual
basis.
The Huskies have won six national titles
since 1990 — four in women’s basketball
and one each in men’s basketball and
men’s soccer. UConn has made NCAA
semifinal appearances nine other times
during that period – including three in
women’s basketball, three in women’s
soccer, two in field hockey and one in men’s
soccer. In total, UConn teams have
advanced to NCAA Championship play 57
times since 1990-91 while Husky studentathletes have garnered All-America honors
138 times.
UConn teams have also won 35 BIG
EAST Conference regular season
championships during that time and 31 BIG
EAST Tournament titles.
None of this success is possible
without great leaders and UConn has had
four different head coaches recognized as
national coaches of the year in the past 11
seasons – Geno Auriemma of women’s
basketball, Jim Calhoun of men’s
basketball, Ray Reid of men’s soccer, Len
Tsantiris of women’s soccer and Bruce
Marshall of men’s ice hockey. Former
UConn Director of Athletics Lew Perkins
was named the National Athletic Director
of the Year by Street & Smith’s
SportsBusiness Journal in 2000.
The UConn Division of Athletics – which
now boasts of over 150 full-time employees
– strives to help the University of
Connecticut grow, develop and improve
each and every day.
