The YALT program at Buffalo State College stands for Young Adult Life Transitions that is based out of BSC. It is a program for young adults, ages 18‐23, with developmental disabilities. These students are visitors on campus, taking classes, joining clubs and activities, and performing internships; ultimately playing an exclusive role in college life. Side Note… The YALT program works with Buffalo Public Schools to make up the College Based Transition Program. On campus, the YALT program is known as the “Transition Program” but remains its own entity as a People Incorporated program. The staff from the Buffalo Public School side also acts as supports for the students. Teacher, Marylou Vaughn, has been with the program since it’s beginning. Tina Giordano is the teacher aide, assisting Marylou, along with the People Incorporated staff, in supporting the students. Buffalo State has agreed to waive the auditing fee so there is absolutely NO cost to the students! The program purchases all needed textbook and supplies for the classes and loans them to the student each semester. Each student receives a schedule at the beginning of each semester (one in August, one in January). Their class will be listed in their schedule, along with any internships, clubs, study partners, and study time. Students pick out a list of classes they are interested in taking before the semester begins, and staff tries their best to accommodate to their first choices (please note, students are not guaranteed participation in all classes, professors participate by choice only). The students are required to earn 72 CEUs (Continuing Education Units) in order to graduate the program. Units are earned by: taking classes, participating in internships, etc. STUDENT INFORMATION All students will receive a Buffalo State ID Card, a username/password for computers, and a Buffalo State e‐mail address. Students also receive full service to the pool, gym, ice skating rink, campus buildings, activities, clubs, and athletic events. Students have the choice to bring a lunch or purchase from restaurants on campus, which include Subway, Salsaritas, SpoT Coffee, Starbucks, Tim Hortons, among many others. Lunch prices usually range from $5‐$12. Students have the option to put money on their ID card to act as a debit card to purchase meals, but do not have the option to buy a meal plan at this time.
