Next Steps in Family History
Family History Computer Programs
Computer vs. Paper
 Paper systems can contain just as much data as any computer based system
and indeed contain a wider range of data so must be seriously considered
 Which is best for you is for you to decide
 I will look at some of the advantages and disadvantages of both systems
before looking at a Family History program
Paper vs. Computer - Advantages
 Paper
 Easily understandable
 Possible to group together different materials to provide a story.
President Steve Williams
Web-Site: www.lfhhs.org.uk
Reg. Charity No. 513437
 In a well ordered filing system is quick to access and makes it easy to
find records.
 Small errors are easy to alter and modify.
 Computer
 Good at keeping records in an ordered way.
 Good at recording sources.
 Excellent at producing a wide range of reports and charts.
 Good at incorporating photographs into the family story.
 Can generate books and websites.
Paper vs. Computer - Disadvantages
 Paper
 No backup – all could be lost
 Much thought needs to be put into how the filing system is arranged
 Difficult to keep records tidy and it is an ongoing job to maintain filing
system
 In certain circumstances it can be time consuming to correct errors
 Drawing charts is best done in pencil as you will be forever changing
them
 Computer
 Can do backups but a lot depends upon the user
 Although good at keeping records tidy, it is possible to mess things up.
It can then be complex to sort out
 A knowledge of how the records are linked is important to avoid making
errors
 Merging files and records can easily mix up your tree
Why not do both!
What should you record.

GEDCOM
 This is not a family history program but a way of arranging the information
collected by a family history program so that it can be exchanged with
another family history program.
 Almost all Family History programs can import and export Gedcom files
 It is in pure text and so with a little knowledge it is easily readable but long.

What are the Computer options?
 Use a program on your computer to store your data on either
Your computer’s internal hard drive
President Steve Williams
Web-Site: www.lfhhs.org.uk
Reg. Charity No. 513437
On an external device
External hard drive
Memory stick
On the ‘Cloud’
 Use the program on an internet site like ‘Ancestry’ to store your data within
their master database.
 Or do both.
Advantages and disadvantages
Data on your computer
 Advantages
You always have access to your data
Your data is kept private unless you deliberately share it
You can store more and varied types of data
It is possible to produce a greater variety of reports
It is possible to produce a greater variety of and more attractive charts
Can produce Web sites and CD’s
Can produce your own books
Easier to search and query the data
Easier to enter data from other sources. E.g. Lancashire BMD,
Lancashire OPC
 Disadvantages
If not working with web based database transferring the data and
images is more difficult
Data on internet
 Advantages
Integrating the data you discover on the site into the database is much
easier
Easy to move from computer to computer
Share your information with others or everyone. This can help with your
researches.
Often provided hints on possible lines of research, but beware.
With Family Tree Maker and Roots Magic (late 2016) you can you can
synchronise family trees with ‘Ancestry’.
Family Historian can do something similar ‘My Heritage’ a smaller web
database. (See below)
Producing stories is easy.
Does not use valuable storage space on your computer.
 Disadvantages
President Steve Williams
Web-Site: www.lfhhs.org.uk
Reg. Charity No. 513437
You have to have a good internet connection.
With the pay sites the data is only editable whilst you are still paying
the annual fee
You cannot enter data to the same detail as you can with a family
history program.
Not as much control in producing charts, reports and books
Producing charts and books is usually at a cost
Very easy to make mistakes and quite difficult to correct them
Limited in the kinds of information can be stored
Enter information from other sources is not easy.

An alternative
 An alternative is to store your Family History on line.
 This is a good way of doing it with the following advantages.
 Does not use valuable storage space on your computer.
 You can store your data, photographs, images of documents, notes,
stories and with some sites produce books.
 Some sites work very well with the web and are well integrated.
 Some work in the ‘cloud’. This enables them to work from any computer
or some phones.
President Steve Williams
Web-Site: www.lfhhs.org.uk
Reg. Charity No. 513437
 With some companies other people can add to your work.
 But it has disadvantages also
 Disadvantages
 You have to have a good internet connection.
 With the pay sites the data is only accessible whilst you are still paying
the annual fee
 You cannot enter data to the same detail as you can with a family
history program.
 They are not as good in providing paper chart or reports.
 The host company will (with your permission) share your work with
others, hence loosing some privacy.
 Although hidden to other users, private information of living individuals
will be available to the service provider.
Online Storage providers
